OT: Interesting collectors item

PESO: Balloon

A NASA research balloon was released in Wānaka today and it floated NE towards
our city. This photo was taken when it was over Ashburton (80km south of here).
I don't know its altitude - the flight tracker didn't say.

Pentax K5ii with FA*400mm f/5.6 and 2x TC. Quite heavily cropped. A telescope
would have been more appropriate.

PESO: Crane Fly

2023-02-12 Thread David Mann
A crane fly emerging from its pupa in an old tree stump in our back yard.

My wife saw some of these a few evenings ago and seems to have managed to
identify them. Today she spotted one emerging while there was still enough
light to get a photo. I had to turn up the ISO to 6400 and also set -1
exposure compensation as the camera was blowing out the highlights a bit. That
got me all the way to 1/180 at f/8.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1198/#peso

Pentax K5ii, FA 100mm f/2.8 macro

I'd have got much better results with a tripod but I wasn't about to hang
around setting one up with mosquitoes biting. I snapped a whole lot of frames
handheld while hoping to get at least one in reasonable focus, while contorting
myself to try and get the plane of focus along the insect's body (as much as
the foreground would allow).

Re: PESO x2 (insects)

Thanks, Henk. Cicadas are usually quite hard to spot but that one started
chirping at about my head height while I was taking photos of the stick insect
(which are also quite adept at hiding).

I'm further south than the cyclone so we'll be unaffected. Up north they've
had an extremely wet summer and this certainly won't help after the damage
they've already suffered.

There are lots of nice tracks up on those hills. The Harry Ell Track is one of

That tree's quite misshapen and leaning badly due to being grown over by larger

It was about -4°C this morning.

PESO: Frost

I saw some nice patterns in the frost on a car windscreen this morning. I'd

Re: Anybody home?

2022-06-23 Thread David Mann
Much the same here. I got my camera out last weekend hoping that the SOFIA
plane would come past, but the wind was blowing from the south so they didn't
need to circle over the city. Sadly they didn't do a loop over the city anyway
as the US Antarctic Program often do with a C17 when they arrive for summer.

We could definitely use some of the hotter weather that the US and Europe have
had lately. We've had a few frosty mornings lately and are barely scraping into
double-digits C.

Today is the first time Matariki (Maori new year) is being celebrated as a
public holiday. It's quite a big thing for our country.

Re: PESO Home Enterprise

2022-06-15 Thread David Mann
That seems to be doing well. We had a whole lot last season growing from seeds
that had self-sowed. We don't use it much though.

The thought has crossed my mind before about digging up the lawn and growing
either flowers or vegetables instead. But I think I'd hate the weeding more
than the mowing.

Re: PESO: Mushroom From Below

2022-06-11 Thread David Mann
It's growing through leaf litter. The top had a fair bit of dirt on it so
wasn't particularly photogenic.

I don't even like edible mushrooms so I just treat all mushrooms as poisonous.
A while ago I read about a species that's edible but becomes poisonous if you
eat it with alcohol.

Speaking of fairies, on her birthday my daughter was given a nice little
stuffed fabric mushroom (fly agaric, of course) with a pouch to hold teeth for
the tooth fairy. She got to use it for the first time last week.

Dan, the nice thing about the phone camera is that it's easy to take a low
photo without crawling in the dirt myself!

The stripped plants are a familiar sight here. We usually put them under

As ours are in the garden we don't need to worry about the excrement :)

Re: PESO: Lake Manapouri

2022-03-04 Thread David Mann
The lockdowns have been lifted now since our vaccination rate reached its
target. We're now on a red/orange/green system to manage the load on the
hospitals. We're currently in "orange" so there are some restrictions on the
size of gatherings and some places require a vaccine pass to enter. Our region
is currently 98.8% double-vaccinated, 74.7% boosted (over-12). The rollout for
5-12s is ongoing.

The virus has been affecting families at our daughter's school so we'll
probably get it before long. There have been a few general sniffles lately as
well which is not exactly helping.

Thanks for the comments, you probably missed the first version as I overwrote

I just dug out the film... it was Fuji Provia 100F. I'd love to use my 6x7

Re: PESO: Lake Hayes

I had an idea about why I may have been having trouble with the colours in the

I've reassigned the profile and also applied the highlights & shadows tool
which has allowed me to keep a lot more detail in the sky. I brought out the
shadows a little but there's very little detail to be had there. Isn't slide
film wonderful.

I just overwrote the image and discarded the original. The updated version is

PESO: The Deans' House

2022-02-24 Thread David Mann
Hi all,

Recently I've been going through some old medium format film scans and
processing the files to get them into my database.

Here's one from 2001, I think it's from the first roll I put through the Pentax
6x7. It's a local landmark which I used to ride past on my way to/from
university.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1136/#peso

Pentax 6x7 with 45mm f/4

The process is a bit painful; dust-spotting a 350+Mb file is not a lot of fun
and I suspect the colours of the slides may have shifted a little over the past
20 years. I'm not great with colour-correction, and it doesn't help that I
haven't calibrated my screen.

It's just as well storage is plentiful... the image I used for the previous PUG
was 1.45Gb as a PSD :)

Re: PESO: My Winter Hobby

2022-02-21 Thread David Mann
They look really nice. Wish I had a heated workshop. We don't get winters
like yours but it still gets far too cold to work in the garage.

I designed and built a mud kitchen for my daughter during the holiday. The
sink came from our old kitchen. I'd had it propped up on some bricks for her
for a couple of years before I finally decided to make something a bit better.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1132/

I am considering adding some cupboard doors at the bottom, or perhaps a junked
toaster oven or microwave like they had at her preschool. I definitely intend
to rearrange those bits of concrete underneath in the near future as they're a
bit hazardous.

Cheers,
Dave

I noticed a while ago that photos presented on the web for hidpi monitors
looked much sharper than normal-sized images that are automatically rescaled
(look up the "srcset" attribute if you're interested). I eventually ran some
tests then modified my own site to support them. The file sizes are much
larger but it's well worth it... speaking as someone on an unlimited-data fibre
plan.

Text also looks so much better. YMMV of course, depending on your eyes. I'm
overdue for another test.

I doubt I'd see much difference with a 4K TV (which we have, but haven't fed it
any 4K content as yet), because I sit a lot further away from it.

Wow, that's impressive. My daughter liked it too.

The fungus on our tree is quite large and it's right down at the base. We had a
smaller tree down by the river which split and fell in a storm a few months
ago. That one was rotten inside with fungus on its trunk that we hadn't
noticed. We've been thinking about getting some arborists in at some stage

I'm not sure whether the tree was still alive. Seeing mushrooms like that on a
trunk was a surprise to me as well. There were several clusters at different
heights. The one I photographed was at about my head height.

I've seen very small mushrooms growing from crevices of tree trunks before but
nothing this big. We have some impressive bracket fungi on our property, one
on an old stump and another on a living tree, which is probably going to have
to be cut down as a result as it'll be weakening the wood.

Once each week I do a long run up the hill, which takes me past the site of a
car crash which claimed the life of two teenage sisters two years ago. One
died instantly at the scene and the other passed away in hospital a couple of
weeks later, on her 16th birthday. Today (December 13th) would have been her
18th birthday. I never knew them but I always think of them when I pass.

In the background you can see some tracks; those are mountain-bike tracks in

Re: Dumb Photoshop Question

2021-09-10 Thread David Mann
That seems a bit strange. I've been processing some photos today and the only
times it's added anything to the filename is if I've reopened a raw file
through Bridge that I've already processed and saved previously. For the
record, my workflow is to use Bridge to organise / select my raw files then
edit in Adobe Camera Raw, finally opening in Photoshop to convert the profile
and save. I found Photoshop produced better jpg files than ACR for some reason.

I think this is a recently-added feature as today is the first time I've
noticed this behaviour. I only discovered it when it didn't ask me to replace
the existing file when I saved the newer version - instead it saved a filename
with "-2" appended.

I've just tried opening a couple of jpg and psd files and this behaviour didn't
occur. FWIW I'm using an iMac.

Sorry for not being helpful :)

Dave

Re: PESO: With the Bee Balm...

That's fantastic. I might show it to my daughter tomorrow as I don't think she

I saw a bellbird in a tree in our back yard yesterday. The light was pretty
good so I decided to get the camera out. As soon as I raised the camera to my
eye the little so-and-so flew off.

I just had a look at the optical diagrams on the K-Mount Page. The F / FA
optical diagram shows the filter as part of the optics but the A* 600/5.6
doesn't. I certainly wouldn't take that as gospel as I don't know where those
diagrams come from. I'd tend to assume that any lens with a filter drawer
would need the filter. Clear as mud :D

Re: PESO: Opportunists

2021-06-18 Thread David Mann
That's a cool photo.

I'm going to have to show this one to my daughter tomorrow. She's really
interested in mushrooms, they're growing all over the place here. She really
enjoys helping the adults do a "health and mushroom check" at her preschool.

Due to the weather we walked home yesterday and in addition to a few good
patches of mushrooms we saw a few instances of hairy fungus growing out of
dung, most likely cat but possibly dog. We certainly don't have any elephants
around here.

We've had a ton of rain here in the past few days. 26mm on Saturday, 68mm

Re: PESO: Supermoon Lunar Eclipse

2021-05-27 Thread David Mann
Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

We didn't quite get totality here. I think the photo I posted was about the
maximum.

I realised partway through the eclipse that having the stars in there was a bit
more interesting. I didn't quite go this far though...
https://xkcd.com/2463/

Exposure was done through trial and error. The histogram was of no use. I
found that exposures of several seconds caused a bit of blur so I settled on
1/2s at ISO800.

Getting it reasonably in focus was largely luck. Infinity focus is pretty hard
to get manually with that lens. At first I used AF, then when the moon became
too dark I switched to manual and used Live View zoomed in, which wasn't
amazing in such dark conditions but it did the job well enough. Once it was
set I left it there. I was taking my chances a bit as I had the lens wide open
to shorten the exposure.

I was also quite lucky with the weather. For most of the evening we had a lot
of patchy fast-moving cloud at low altitude. It mostly cleared away about 15
mins before the eclipse started. Before the eclipse I could see the moon
through the cloud but it would have made things difficult as the moon darkened.

Cheers,
Dave

PESO: Bee

2021-05-10 Thread David Mann
We had some nice warm weather yesterday and we had a couple of monarch
butterflies emerge.

I was keeping an eye on the two remaining chrysalises (that I'm aware of) and
noticed a nearby plant was attracting lots of bees.

I spent quite a while chasing the bees around the flowers with my macro lens.
My hit rate was quite low (I took just over 100 photos), trying to follow the
things with a handheld macro lens, manually focussed.

I do have a few more that came out reasonably well but that's the one I decided

Re: PESO: Bellbird

Something I didn't mention was that those red flowers were the reason the bird
was there, which is why I wanted to keep them. I'll have another look at the
other photos later and may post one of it feeding on them.

That is one of two trees it visits in our garden; the other is a banksia which
is in much better light. I think this tree is a bottlebrush.

That bird has been taunting me for ages but they move about so quickly and
often announce their presence just before leaving.

Re: PESO: More fantails

2021-04-14 Thread David Mann
A fantail came inside at my daughter's preschool today and fluttered around the
building for a few minutes before finding its way back out.

According to Maori legend, if a fantail comes indoors it's a harbinger of
death. But she found two four-leaf clovers in the lawn beforehand so maybe
it'll cancel out.

We've had at least one bellbird in the area visiting our garden but they're

Re: PESO x2: Fantail

2021-04-04 Thread David Mann
OK I decided to have another look at the rendering and I've been learning a lot
more about Adobe Camera Raw in the process.

I've boosted the exposure a bit, tweaked the colour and applied some (well, a
lot of) noise reduction, masking out the areas where I wanted to keep fine
detail. I've also toned down the white background highlights a little. I am
absolutely loving the adjustment brush tool. It would be nice to have
Photoshop-style selection tools but I think I can cope.

PESO x2: Fantail

2021-04-03 Thread David Mann
While chasing the warbler this morning we had a couple of fantails visit.
These are another one that rarely sits still, but they're quite a bit tamer.
They eat insects, mostly caught on-the-wing.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1112/#peso

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo//#peso

These were both shot with the K5ii and FA*400mm f/5.6, handheld. I didn't have
enough light so the photos were underexposed by 1 stop or so. The lens was
wide open and I'm surprised (amazed, actually) at how well the body hit the
focus in such low light. And that it chose the right thing to focus on.

Dave

Re: PESO: Grey Warbler

2021-04-01 Thread David Mann
I did a bit of testing with the AF this morning, with fairly mixed results. In
my frustration I had thought the K10D had been better with that lens so I tried
it with both cameras. The K5ii is better but both cameras seemed to get
confused at times.

I can't quite put my finger on it just yet - strongly backlit subjects seem to
cause some issues. They'd both focus just fine on darker / lower-contrast
areas of the garden but sometimes they just wouldn't lock, often on bushy trees
with small leaves. It may just be the 3D nature of the subject making things
difficult.

I tested both cameras with just the central point.

The K5ii is definitely better at knowing which direction to move the focus. My
K10D nearly found itself at the bottom of a cliff at Norfolk Island because of
that.

I still wish there was a focus limiter on these long lenses so when they do
hunt it wouldn't take so long.

Cheers,
Dave

PESO: Grey Warbler

2021-04-01 Thread David Mann
A grey warbler came to visit our garden this evening. They're a very small
bird, smaller than a sparrow. And they don't really stop moving. You usually
hear them instead of seeing them (they have a wonderful song).

These aren't amazing but they're the best I managed to get from 22 photos.
Both are very heavy crops, shot at 3200ISO so there's also a bit of noise.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1108/#peso

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1109/#peso

Pentax K5ii, FA*400mm f/5.6, both 1/500 at f/9.5 handheld.

This AF with this camera/lens combination is terrible for little birds. The
only way I can get it to lock on anything but the most obvious targets is to
let it auto-select its AF point. In that case it'll focus on any old thing and
it's a lottery as to whether your subject is actually in focus. But at least
it mostly stops hunting.

That cow photo reminded me of Norfolk Island. The cows roam free and if you
hit one with your car you have to pay to have it butchered. And no, you don't
get the meat. This may have changed since we were there as the Australian
mainland now has more control over the island (they were largely independent
before but the finances weren't going so well).

In NZ if stock gets loose the farmer is liable for any damage to vehicles.

I found it interesting that my DSLR largely sat on the shelf since my daughter
was born, because my phone camera is good enough and always at-hand. It's
quite common for people to buy a nice camera to photograph their kids but I

Yes, I was thinking of you when I took the photos. Our swan plants are
absolutely inundated with caterpillars so it wasn't too hard to find a few
well-placed ones.

> A few questions:
> Where exactly did you find these larvae?

We bought some swan plants and put them in a planter box in the garden. We
initially had them under a cage of netting with the side left open to let
butterflies in. The netting is useful to keep butterflies out once you have
enough larvae, to prevent them stripping the plants and starving.

We had to remove the cage as we weren't getting any eggs but now we've ended up
with too many and will have to get some more plants very soon. We'll also be
putting the cage back on. When they pupate we'll open it again so the new
butterflies can get out.

> Are they wild or were they raised by you or someone else?

They're wild. Monarchs are very common here. A lot of families grow them as
it's a good opportunity to educate kids about their life cycle. I'm hoping
that my daughter gets to watch one hatch this year. We just missed one last
year.

> What is the Monarch season in your area?

I don't actually know... I'm hoping this crop of caterpillars have time to
pupate before it gets too cold but I think they should be OK. We won't be
getting frosts for a while yet.

> Do they migrate down there? If so, from where and to where?

I don't think so, but I'm definitely not an expert. They usually spend winter
in parks as far as I know. One such park is close to me but that one doesn't
see great numbers. Some people tag them so they can be tracked through winter.

> Do you have an organization like Monarch watch own under?

Not that I'm aware of, but we've never thought of looking. This is the closest
I could find with a quick search:

I'd add that you need at least one copy which is normally disconnected from the
computer so you can't accidentally delete anything, nor have it encrypted by
ransomware etc.

I'm about to change my backups slightly because my Time Machine backup doubles
as my working drive for photos (the SSD in my computer is too small to hold my
photos). Not only is it a bit slow to transfer files over USB2, it's even
worse if the computer starts a backup while I'm working. So I have a USB3 SSD
on the way which will become my working drive for photos, with the old HDDs
still serving as backups.

Re: PESO: European Goldfinch

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. It's nice to rediscover a bit of
photographic mojo. New equipment does that, I suppose.

At the risk of sounding like Pierre de Fermat, last week I took a wonderful
photo of my daughter and her best friend running towards me, using the K5ii and
FA200mm lens, but I can't show it here. I was pleasantly surprised at how well
the AF tracked them. And the sensor in this camera is made of pixie dust.

I'm also slowly coming to grips with Adobe Camera Raw; I'm getting far better
results now than I was with Photoshop alone.

PESO: Rose

I put a long lens on the K5ii this morning to try out the AF. Of course, no
birds bothered to show up so I had to make do. This is straight from the
camera, no adjustments except for cropping a bit off the top.

Pentax K5ii with FA*400mm f/5.6, 1/500 at f/8 handheld, 400 ISO. I ended up
using manual exposure for this one as I just couldn't hold it still enough to
lock the exposure.

I've uploaded this one at 950px high (as per PUG guidelines) but I'm not sure

Enablement (and PESO)

2021-03-15 Thread David Mann
It's been a long time since I bought anything photographic but I recently found
a used K5ii at a reasonable price, and it arrived today. This is a big upgrade
from my K10D.

I went outside and took a couple of photos just after my daughter went to bed
but the light was getting a bit low. No problem, I can crank up the ISO :)

This was taken with the FA*200mm f/2.8 at 6400ISO, 1/125 at f/5.0 handheld,
very much reliant on shake reduction.

I'll check whether it's on the latest firmware soon. To their credit, Ricoh's

I shot some film today

2021-03-06 Thread David Mann
I decided it's about time I used up the film that's been sitting in my old film
cameras since about 2007 when I bought my K10D.

I had one frame left on my Pentax 6x7. I'll be interested to see what was on
that film but the second-last frame (at least) is going to be toast as I seem
to recall the body has a light leak.

I used that last frame with the 165mm f/2.8 lens to take a photo of my daughter
and she ran over asking to see the photo :D So I loaded my dummy roll of 120
to show her how film works.

After that I got the LX and fitted my 135mm f/2.5 lens... that combination felt
glorious to use. The LX somehow hadn't developed sticky mirror, it just needed
a bit of fiddling with the film-speed dial to get the meter to work properly.
That camera is such a pleasure to use. I don't think I got any good photos but
I'll have to wait and see. I'm not used to manually focusing on a moving
subject.

I still have film in the K2 but I'll get onto that another day.

I'm actually amazed that I remembered how to work those cameras. The battery
on the 6x7 is flat and I don't remember if it had an electronic shutter or just
used the battery for the metered prism (which I have misplaced, along with the
wooden grip).

I still have a few rolls of film in both formats (expired long ago) so maybe
I'll do some more shooting at a later date, while I can still get it processed.

Dave
