In Spain we also had a mess with AZ, age groups and 2nd dose.
They ended up giving it to a narrow group of population (60 to 65 y/o) and
those younger already jabbed could chose their second one. Most people chose AZ
over Pfizer, that was NOT the government preference.
I got 2n Pfizer 3 weeks ago. Cases are growing very quickly for the last 2
weeks but this time they affect mainly to <30's thanks to vaccination, so
hospitals are not as impacted this time.

Very interesting thanks.
Being locked in at home for two weeks now I have already read most of the
themes covered in the video, but it is a very well done summary.

As a curiosity the video also explains that the Spanish flue is called this way
not because of its origin but because, not being involved in World War I, Spain
was the first Western country that reported cases of the disease.

Re: MX-1

Hola Juan,

I reviewed this camera back in 2013, when I was collaborating with in my

Anyway, here is the review. In Spanish I am afraid (for the rest, not for you !

I wanted to start a thread on this little gem of a camera. From what I see
in the list over the years (Gmail keeps everything!), the styling and
perceived limitations were made fun of a little, then some people posted
some images made with it, and that's all I found.

What I don't see is any acknowledgment of the fact that this is a
delightful camera to use. I do think the design and materials contribute to
this, there's a tactile quality to it, plus the tiltable screen, which is
plenty big and sharp even in 2019, and the usual great Pentax feature set
and menus, make it just that: a pleasure to shoot with.

The weird choice of painted brass and the whole "will acquire patina"
thing, I take almost as a sarcastic commentary on planned obsolescence.
Probably unintentional, but interesting commentary in any case. Plus is yet
another instance of a camera company that could only be described as
"quirky". Think about it: They brought us the K-01, the Q series, the MX-1.
They were making non-pro DSLRs with weather sealing and IS back in 2006.
They make a lens series that is all metal, like it's 1965 or something.
Their acquisition by Ricoh is a perfect marriage: the company that makes
the GR series, made the GXR and other weird cameras like those is a great
match. Hey if you want great AF and new cameras every three weeks go get a
Sony or Canon, those are not going away anyway. I am glad there's someone
seemingly experimenting and making cool stuff.

Back to the MX-1: I love this camera. Yes it would be great to have a hot
shoe, I've been thinking I might tastefully epoxy one to mine. If Pentax
were to make an MX-2, with a similar body and features and a 20MP 1"
sensor, I would be all over it.

While I wait for my patina to develop, I leave you with this really nice
2019 review of the MX-1. Check out that guy's channel too, he likes his
Pentaxes.

I have a friend who has a smart phone review website and he shows me the phone

Pentax zoom boxes give away

Hello,

I was doing some cleaning and I discovered a couple of lens boxes whose lenses

(the 'kits' 18-55 and 50-200)

I was going to throw them to the paper container for recycling but then I
though that maybe someone collects this sort of things.

So if someone is interested let me know, the only cost will be the postage from

>I am a supporter of the EU, but I do not want my country to become a
state in the USE. I can't see how it would be possible. There are too
many diverse societies with too many different backgrounds, cultures,
languages and ambitions to make it work. It would be doomed to failure
IMO. But a European Union as it stands at the moment is a working entity
that has good benefit for member countries.

>At the recent referendum I voted to remain in. If we do in fact Brexit,
and any future UK govt wanted to apply to rejoin, I think that if the
conditions were fully open borders and full financial union, then I
would vote to remain out.

>Like you, I love my country and I don't want to see it watered down by a

with their own agendas that bear no parallel with the UK's interests.

>I also love Europe and lots of countries within it - Spain and France to

name but two - and I don't want to see them watered down either.

Well, that is the never ending story with nationalism. One doesn't want his/her
nation to be diluted in a bigger entity that does not respect their
'peculiarities' and makes decisions against their interests.

The UK know this very well with Scotland, for instance, but somehow they
managed to convince them that they are 'Better Together'.
But, funny enough, the bettertogethers now vote for Brexit and proclaime their
'independence day' and the 'vote yes for independence's now say that they are
'better together'...with the rest of the EU.

In Spain we have the same thing with Catalonia, that doesn't feel well
respected in Spain but fully embraces the European project.

Maybe is that one hates its first line manager but no the second one...?

>Maybe I'm just getting a bit more cynical in my old age ;-)

>Peace, friends.

Sure !!
Actually, I think that this was all about. Too many countries, different
backgrounds, too little space...lets build something in common so we don not
keep fighting all the time.

The common project went too far for the British? well, too bad...but don't
worry, like in the Prodigal Son Parable, we will sacrifice a fattened calf to
celebrate your return...eventually.

It has been a pleasure, thanks for the conversation !

>Your assumption that immigration is a bad thing puzzles me. Why is it
bad? I actually think immigration is a good thing. That said, complete
freedom of movement, unrestricted, to a relatively small island with a
population already in excess of 65 million is untenable. We have an
overstretched national health service, housing shortages (pushing prices
up) amongst many other problems. Our government has already agreed to
immigration quotas that have been negotiated within the EU frame.

>Beyond this, one has to ask the question: why the UK ? Why do so many
people want to come here? Many people travel from the middle east, all
the way through Europe and strive to reach these shores. Why? This is
not the land of plenty that somehow has seemingly burned itself into the
immigrant consciousness.

Well, maybe I should have said 'but not the (apparently) bad things'. It is not
me who says that is bad thing but the Brexit advocates who used it as one of
the main reasons for it.

And it is not only the UK the destiny for immigrants and refugees. I remember
hearing the Hungarian Prime Minister (I think it was him) saying that this was
a 'only' German problem, because all refugees wanted to go to Germany and not
stay on their country.

I live in Spain and we have also experience with people coming from Africa and
dying in the Mediterranean trying to do so. And, from the 90's the situation
has changed a lot and we have more and more immigrants in our cities. Even my
hometown (14K people) is full of foreign people, specially during the summer,
were there is demand for the fruit picking campaign.
And this is not always been well accepted by the locals, that forget too
quickly that we were a country of emigrants in our civil post-war, not that far
ago. And actually, we are having a comeback with the crisis, specially for the
young people that is unable to find a decent job in Spain after having spend
lots of yers in the University.

>>- They are (were) in, but with their own rules (currency, somehow
>>restricted borders,...)

>Believe it or not we are still 'in' and will likely be so until 2019. We
do have some opt-outs from the EU, currency being the main one. This was
negotiated and agreed upon by the EU. It is not a unilateral decision.
Your government, Juame, agreed to this opt-out along with all the other
EU governments. So how is this all our fault?

No, of course. But being part of a club, with specific rules for you and with
the permanent menace of leaving out doesn't seem the best way to progress. They
(the Governments that you mention) probably though that this was the lesser
evil, but then the crisis came in and the 'special ones' decided to leave.

>The somehow restricted borders are also negotiated. Britain is not the
only EU member with restricted borders. Please see this wiki page on the
Schengen Area:

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area>

Well, in the map everybody seems to be in or planning to be in (even if not EU
member) except for...the Islands (UK and Ireland) in green color.

>>- They always try to deactivate (from within) all the attempts for a
>>closer political union.

>I don't understand this statement at all. To my knowledge this is not true.

>Where's Bob Walkden when you need him ;-) (he's cycling in France!)

>My idea of 'a closer political union' probably mirrors most Brits' by
being part of a central union of countries standing together with trade
and social links. It does *not* include any notion that overall control
of our country will be decided by a European Parliament, a European
defence force (army). I am in two minds about a single currency, but

This sounded very weird to me since nobody in Spain is saying that we should

Interesting conversation.

As a citizen of 'the rest of Europe' my view of the UK as a member of the EU is:

- They just want the good things of the Union (free trade) but not the bad
things (immigration,...). Brexit leaders promised to achieve this perfect
equation.

- They are (were) in, but with their own rules (currency, somehow restricted
borders,...)
- They always try to deactivate (from within) all the attempts for a closer
political union.

So, yes, probably the Brexit is a bad thing in the short term, but maybe is a
good opportunity for both parties, specially for the Europeans that are willing
to build a closer and more supportive Union.

Yes and no.

We don't have proportional representation - we elect MPs to look after
our interests in parliament. With the way our system works, I would have
been in favour of our elected MPs (after due diligence in listening to
their constituents) voting in parliament on our behalf.

Sadly the PM promised a public referendum and the result is now a matter
of fact.

I say this because in my opinion a lot of people were not educated
enough to understand what they were voting for/against. There appeared
to be a public backlash based on misinformation and lack of ability to
seemingly gather facts independently.

This article might be of interest:

But surely a potential government promising a superseding of the

referendum result and leave the EU, so in a general election that might
be their promise, though I think they would lose.

Hi,

I don't think that it is ridiculous at all.
On of the main selling point of mirrorless is to get the same image quality
with less size/weight. That's why their users are (in general) more sensitive
to these factors.

Of course YMMV, and you probably value factors other than size/weigh, but I am
with PJ in that mirrorless are supposed to be smaller/lighter, and Sony has
marked a high standard with their A7 family.

If someone is interested I am ready to send it at a very good price. I prefer

I have also a 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses (the first edition) that I can add to

I have the box and all the original accessories, guide, and an extra battery.

If someone is interested let me know and I'll send more detailed description,

Regarding price, make me an offer. Anyway I'll sell it for less than KEH EX

I had the chance to spend some days with the Ricoh GR and I wrote a review in
my friend's technology blog. In Spanish but with several example images in case
that you are interested in this special fixed-lens-APSC-size-sensor compact
camera:
http://www.teknofilo.com/ricoh-gr-analisis/

A fine camera with very sharp results...but not for everybody.

Jaume

Re: the 16-45 to 17-70 range

2013-07-23 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

I also have the old Sigma 17-70 (actually I think that I have some
responsibility in Boris owning one...) and I second Boris comments. The only
complaint is that is is a bit heavy and the zoom eventually becomes loose.
I have physically seen the latest version and I have to admit that it looks and
feels extremely compact.

However, my favorite compromise range / IQ would be the 18-135. Sigma has one
but its reputation is worst than the 17-70s and the Pentax one seems a bit
expensive.

Jaume

Dave, I've (the oldest version of) Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5. Such lenses
can be had for order of USD 250-300. I cannot praise mine enough. It
successfully replaced DA* 16-50/2.8. Later versions are 17-70/2.8-4.0
(notice faster long end of the zoom range) and further introduced HSM
(Sigma's ultrasonic AF) and OS (Optical image Stabilization). I opted
out of these as I wanted something as simple as possible so that it
 won't break down just because.

Optically I've no complaints at all. It just what suits me best right
now if and when I have to shoot with DSLR.

Now I do reviews (Pentax MX-1 among them)

2013-05-16 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

A friend of mine started a blog around technology some time ago. He told me
that some manufacturers/distributors lend him devices to test (specially
smartphones) and I told him 'if they lend you a camera, you know where I am...'.
It was kind of a joke, but a couple of weeks later he was offering me a Samsung
EX2F to test and write a review.

So, 2 months later, I have written 3 reviews and a short photo-show report. The
last one and just published is the Pentax MX-1 review and I am currently
testing a Sony RX100 (it seems that I have specialized in the 'premium compact'
camera segment).

The review is in Spanish but there are plenty of pictures on it. Here you have
the links in case you want to take a look:

http://www.teknofilo.com/samsung-ex2f-analisis-y-prueba/

http://www.teknofilo.com/sonimag-foto-2013/
http://www.teknofilo.com/pentax-mx-1/

Regarding the MX-1, its retro design is not as well done as the Fuji's, the
screen does not fit well for instance, but it is a pleasure to use (it is
tiltable, a must for me). The results are quite good taking into account the
sensor size but the price here (499 EUR) is a bit too high considering its
feature set.
My conclusion is that despite its flaws, I had a great time using it. I cannot
say the same about other competitors in the premium compact segment (specially
the smallest ones)

Jaume

I have read some early comparisons and it seems very competitive with an also

 Hi!

After quite a wait (which was totally worth it), another Ricoh GXR-M mount
module arrived here yesterday. This time it was accompanied by Novoflex
 K-mount
adapter. This is most wondrous thing as it works seamlessly regardless of
whether the lens has an aperture ring or not.

Focusing it with A 50/1.2 fully open is not any more difficult than any other
lens. In fact it is quite easy. So now, I have a Ricoh camera and all my
 Pentax
lenses (notably 50/1.2, 43 and 77) that can be used on it.

 Is it then appropriate to:
 1. Post photographs taken with this gear to PUG?
 2. Submit such photographs to PDML annual?

 What would elders say?

Re: What are the shortcomings of your gear?

2013-04-15 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Talking about the K20D, and in order of relevance:

- Size, weight...it makes me lazy to take it with me
- High ISO, i would like to be able to shoot 6400 without hesitation, as K-5
owners say they do.
- AF in low light, moving subjects,... I have missed many pictures because of
this
- Articulated/tilting LCD is good
- Be able to record videos with continuous AF, if I have to focus manually and
such things, not for me.

Regarding my Sony NEX-3

- Pictures look softer: I don't know if the 18-55 kit zoom (not good
reputation) is the one to blame, or the shooting position, more unstable than
in a DSLR,...
- No viewfinder !!! For me it is harder to compose pictures in a LCD. Not sure
about electronic viewfinders, never tried it long enough.
- Better ISO

What photos are you losing because your gear isn't performing well enough,
or because it doesn't have a feature that you need? And in what situations

 to

Poor autofocus?  Can't use the flash in the rain?  Don't have enough
resolution to make wall sized prints?

For example, my camera sucks because it isn't full frame is not
what I'm looking for.  Here's a hypothetical case:
The exposure metering sucks. If I leave the camera on auto exposure, then
 when I
am taking photos of Dave Brooks working the corner of Heart Attack and Vine
downtown, the camera keeps metering for the stop light, and both David, and
 his

when I shoot without the light in the background it overexposes and his white

Hello everyone. Just wanted to post the latest on the 2013 PDML Photo
 Annual.

The submission period ended some time back and now we're in the
traditional trying to coax/cajole/plead with the editors to get their
votes in on the photos that we'll be using. Nothing different there :)

What is new is that a couple of weeks ago I received a mailing from
Dana-Farber about a promotion/incentive that seemed interesting: An
anonymous millionaire (most likely) supporter of theirs has agreed to
match (that is, effectively double) every donation they receive before
March 15. I emailed the Powers That Be to ask if we could take
advantage of this while still directing our donation to the Global
Health Initiative - since the PDML is an international group I feel
quite strongly that our donation should go to a program with
international scope. Friday I received the reply that we could
definitely direct our donation to the Global Health Initiative but not
the matching funds that come from the anonymous donor. I suppose it's
not ideal but it's certainly nothing to sneeze at: We raise $500.00
(about what our annual donation comes to), it still goes to the
international program we support, and an extra five hundred bucks
magically goes to their cancer research in general. What's not to
 like?

Well, the deadline, of course. We haven't even finished putting the
book together at this point, much less sold any copies, and the
deadline's four days away. So here's my plan: I'll write them a
 check
for $500.00 when I meet with them on Friday so we get the matching
donation. I'll apply the book sales toward my $500 as they come in. If
sales fall short of $500 the difference will be on me (this is pretty
much how it works out every year, actually: we make $400-$450 and I
round up to $500 with my own donation). If we go over $500 I'll spent
the extra on cookies and beer (just kidding - I'll donate that as
 well).

So that's the plan unless there are any strong, well-reasoned
objections from burly guys who live close enough to come over here and
 beat me up.

Re: A modest proposal for Ricoh

2012-11-29 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
- Mensaje original -

 De: P. J. Alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com

So I've had way too much time on my hands, and I've been thinking about
the implications of the K-01 being a one off product.

It seems that Ricoh could redeem itself by releasing a K mount module for the
GRX.  Yes I know it's been proposed in the past, but now with Pentax and
Ricoh having combined photographic imaging operations it actually makes
 sense.
It would also overcome the biggest beef that Pentax users had with the K-01,
 a
 lack of viewfinder.

Heck the current price for a GRX base and a K module would be about the same
 as
the original price for a K-01 assuming that the K module didn't cost any
more than the Leica M module.

It would make a mirrorless body with an additional EVF a viable backup for
 K-5
 users

Finally Pentax could offer the GRX and the different modules in various
 colors,
why the possibilities of bad taste in color combinations alone are endless!

Yes, I agree, this would be great.

However, in one of the recent (around Photokina) varous interviews with various
Pentax-Rocoh engineers/managers, one of them said that they thought about it
but that it did'nt quite fit with the portability of the GX-R concept due to
the k-mount register distance needs.
My interpretation is that the module resulted too thick to go well with the
'body'.

I agree that Boris must have a more informed opinion about this...

Jaume

 1) There's no such thing as a terrible 28mm lens.

In light of this, I never wrote the review, and here are some of those

Oh, so my joke was not too far from reality !!

It's a pity since i once bought a MF Vivitar f2.8 new in box (for only 24 EUR,

As you can see in the 3rd photo, the filter holder is broken. This
hasn't been an issue for me; the filter and holder still insert into
the lens without problems and stay there. This is the second time I
take the filter out since I purchased the lens because, really, who
needs to use a yellow or red filter nowadays? Even an ND filter is
superfluous if your camera can handle shutter speeds higher than
 1/1000s.

I couldn't find the hood at time of photographing, but I'm sure it's
around here somewhere. Will knock the price down if I don't find the
 hood.

Interesting blog entry from former PDMLer but still loyal Pentax
fashion shooter, Benjamin Kanarek. Based on the premise that he wants
FF but Pentax hasn't delivered, he steps through a decision process of
comparing the two new inexpensive FF's.

Two very interesting related comments in the follow-ups: Benjamin is
mostly pissed-off at the poor AF of the K5.

I need a camera where when go to a shoot, I don't feel paranoid
that half of my stuff is not in focus... :-(

I wonder if the new K-5II AF will improve the performance in the way Benjamin
is demanding (it actually seems more a low light sensitivity improvement from
what I read in the announcements).

Christine,

I am glad that you had a good time in Spain / Catalonia / Barcelona area (where
I live BTW).

And yes, Castells are something unique to watch but unfortunately, as you may
imagine, there has been some accidents in its more than centenary history.
That's why they lately adopted the helmet protection for the kids that climb to
the top.
However, if there is a crowded base, it is much safer than it seems.

I have had not the chance to go through the pictures, I am on vacations
connected via 3G mobile (one of the reasons for this late reply), so I'll
archive your post and revise it when I am back to the broadband at home.

G'day all

Like others, I found that the discount codes mentioned by others wouldn't work
for me in Australia but, after a bit of online searching I think I've found a
work around.  It seems to have worked for me in Australia - it may work in
other countries as well.

The trick is to do the transaction in US dollars.

On the order page for the annual, if you scroll down to the bottom right
you'll see a drop down box where you can select to carry out the transaction
in US dollars rather than your local currency (choose Blurb United States).
Once you've done that you'll find that the discount code UNIVERSITY25 will
work.

A disconcerting feature of Australian orders is that Blurb is now charging
Goods and Services Tax.  This is something new and adds 10% to the quoted cost
of the annual for Australian buyers.  Strangely, the tax is added even if you
make the purchase in US dollars and the amount charged is more than 10%.  I'm
not sure what's going on with this but even with PayPal's skewed exchange rate
for USD/AUD, I've still come out ahead by using US dollars for the transaction
(I think.)

With cautious optimism diluted with a small portion of educatedness I
submit to the court that I am starting to get a feeling of deja vu
from mid 2000's when we had plethora of cameras all sporting the very
same 6 MP sensor... Anyone else care to join me in my deja vu?

I woud say that, after the 6mpix era, Pentax is using the same sensor in 2-3
bodies:

10 Mpix in K10D, K200D and K-m
12 Mpix in K-x and k-r
14 Mpix in K20D and K-7
16 Mpix in K-5 and K-30 (and k-01 but this is a different category for me).
So it should be enough for this sensor...

Ok, maybe my expectations were too high. Probably I have read some reviews of
recent Oly's or Panny's with AF 'almost as good if not better than DSLRs' and I
expected something similar instead of something average.

Anyway, I can live with it in a mirrorless, but not with the mentioned LCD/EVF

From my reading of the review, it doesn't say that the K-01's contrast
detection AF is much worse than anyone else's, just that it's worse
than phase detection AF.  This is still true in general for mirrorless
system cameras.  I'm not saying it's great  but merely that they
didn't compare the contrast detection AF with anything else.

K-01 vs NEX thoughts

2012-02-02 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
- Mensaje original -

 De: Brian Walters apathy...@lyons-ryan.org

At $750 body only, I'll be taking a close look when it becomes available in
March but I'll really need to be convinced that the LCD screen is usable as
 a viewfinder in bright sunlight.

I have had the chance to acquire a Sony NEX-3 with 18-55 at a very discounted
price (exhibition unit) and thus to experience the mirrorless-LCD-only concept.
My thoughts:

- Very fun as a video camera (I had a 5 y/o MiniDV that hardly used, not
convenient). The mobile LCD helps. Great result when showed on a 37-40 inch TV,
and this is only 720p...Little artifacts, I don't feel the need for full HD.
The 18-55 is short compared with my videocamera zoom.
The K-01 has better video but a fixed LCD though...

- Very good as a 'social' camera, you can shoot good pictures and good video
with the same camera, no need to carry my K20D. I would prefer a 18-70 standard
zoom for a better coverage.
The Pentax would be similar here, buy bulkier.

- As an 'artistic' camera. OK, the sensor is a 14mpix APS-C, so it is similar
or better than my K20D's...but I can't get used to shoot and compose only with
LCD, and also the lack of some direct controls is hard to get used too. The
long lenses on the NEX are highly anti-ergonomic too. So when i want to take
the 'good' pictures, the NEX cannot substitute my K20D at all.
I had hopes in this Pentax, it seems better ergonomically, but no EVF :-(

- Use of old lenses: I have tried to use my Pentax lenses in the NEX with a
(cheap) adapter. Well, it works specially on those lenses with aperture ring.
But the focusing process is long and you don't have stabilization...so maybe
useful for stills or particular uses, but not for much more (IMHO).
The K-01 should be much better using old Pentaxes...but only Pentaxes. It has
in-body SR vs NEX in-lens.

So, for me the K-01 is not yet the camera that can do everything withouth the
bulk of an SLR...and nor is the NEX.

Regards,

Jaume

Asunto: RE: Help reseting image sequence

I believe the solution is to format the card in camera and shoot one frame.
Place that card in a card reader attached to your computer and change the
 file
name on the card USING THE COMPUTER to what it's got the sequence number
 it's supposed to have.

If the frame you shot after formatting the card is numbered 20D28502.PEF when
it's supposed to be 20D21501.PEF, you would rename it to 20D21501.PEF.

When you put the card back into the camera and shoot another frame, the
 camera
should pick up with the correct sequence number again just like it picked up
 the
 old sequence number.

The camera seems to keep the last file name in memory, but if it finds a
different file name on the card, it will continue with the next frame number
from that one. This is one reason I always format my cards in the camera as
 soon
as I've made sure my download to the computer is good.

That way if I change cards I don't have to worry about the camera picking up
an old sequence number from a previous image. Also works for being able to
 use
the same cards between my K20D and the K10D I use for backup.

Thanks John,

However, according to Dario's response and my own experience, what you say only
works if the 'new' sequence is higher than the older. This is, if the camera
finds a higher number in the card, it changes to this sequence, if the number
found is lower, it doesn't.
And note that, for the camera, the number are only the last four characters of
the file name. This is why, in my case, the camera found an old 20D18501 and
instead of following 20D21500 it switched to 20D28502.
So, Dario's solution is based on reseting the count and make it start again
from 0001, and then apply what you said. This way the number you want will be
always higher and the camera will switch.

Thanks again and regards,
Jaume

Help reseting image sequence

2011-11-03 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

I set my K20D so I don't have 2
pictures with the same name (20D0.jpg for the first 10,000 frames,
20D1.jpg for the second 10K and so on). But recently when I was
shooting the (let's say) 20D21500 frame, I changed the SD card and I
didn't remember that in this second card I had a couple of old images
(let's say 20D18500 and 20D18501).

As a result, the following frames were named as 20D28502 instead of 20D21501
(this is, the
last 4 digits followed the old image sequence).
I have tried to reproduce the situation, but the camera didn't go back to the
previous number sequence.
So my question is, is there any way to force the camera to put the last 4
digits that I want it to, so I can keep with the original sequence?

Thanks in advance,Jaume

Many thanks Dario.
So if the camera finds a picture with a higher number than the current
sequence, it jumps to follow the other sequence, (but not the other way).

 Hi Jaume,

1 - Format the SD card to delete all pics
2 - Go to Rec. Mode menu, scroll down to Memory item, go to the right to
enter this screen and go down to the last item: File No.
 3 - Uncheck its checkbox.
4 - Shot a picture and confirm it is 20D1
5 - Copy the file 20D21501 into the picture folder (DCIM/xxxPENTX or the one
 with the date)
 6 - Redo step 2 above.
 7 - Check the checkbox
 Done.

 Ciao,

 Subject: Help reseting image sequence

As a result, the following frames were named as 20D28502 instead of
 20D21501 (this is, the
last 4 digits followed the old image sequence).
I have tried to reproduce the situation, but the camera didn't go back
 to the previous number sequence.
So my question is, is there any way to force the camera to put the last 4
digits that I want it to, so I can keep with the original sequence?

  Thanks in advance,Jaume

the results will be pretty much the same, but since they came some
time apart, maybe they present some other diffs. Maybe faster AF, or
shorter shutter lag - I understand they have diff shutters.

So, any hands-on experience on both cameras? Second to that, is
there any source of info on shutter lag for the MZ-3 and MZ-5? Any
comments on the MZ-3? Boz's site shows it to be slightly diff from
the MZ-5 in form of grip, so maybe it's significantly better than
the MZ-5 - I did have one MZ-5 for a time so I'm using it as
 reference.

IIRC, the MZ-3 was the final incarnation of the MZ-5/MZ-5n series,
with incremental improvements in every model. It was initially only
available in Japan (fueling a thriving trade in grey-market imports).
[I know the MZ-S was a later, higher-specced camera, but that was in a
very different body; the MZ-3 is very similar in appearance to a MZ-5]

I'd be very surprised if the MZ-3 wasn't at least as good as a MZ-5n
on every scale of measurement, and significantly better in some areas.

For what I remember and read in Bojidar's site, the MZ-3 is a MZ-5n with 1/4000
top speed instead of 1/2000 (the MZ-5n, which I own does have DoF preview)

I found this quote quite revealing,
'Mirrorless cameras are a threat,' said David Rubenstein, a
Tokyo-based analyst at MF Global FXA Securities Ltd

I guess they would be a threat to companies that choose to oppose the
trend rather than embrace it.

Some observations:

Non adoption of autofocus cut the SLR market from perhaps twenty or
more brands in the sixties and early seventies to less than ten.
(Topcon, anyone?  Or Miranda?  Yashica?  Petri?)   Contax and Olympus
both flubbed their AF implimentations, but Olympus redeemed itself
with a confident early digital program.

Non or late adoption of digital imaging cut that figure down to about
seven (not counting brands that only sell small sensor cameras.
Pentax scraped through by the skin of its teeth after dodging the
Phillips bullet.  Contax fell to the Phillips bullet after botching
its AF program. (Panasonic and Leica briefly dallied in the sector,
the last Panny DSLR was launched in 2007, while Leica has gone upscale
to medium format DSLRs).  Oh, then there's Sigma, but their
unconformity puts them so far out in left field that they're a
boutique product in a very small niche, kept alive by their third
party lens sales.

So now we have Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic and
Leica.  Have I forgotten anyone?  We'll add Ricoh later, but they have
no DSLR legacy so we won't count them just yet?  Samsung?  Same as
Ricoh, except that while they briefly sold some DSLRs those were
seconded from the Pentax line-up, and surely nobody ever saw them as
anything but Pentaxes.

Leica's gone back to its rangefinder roots, no DSLR in this segment any more.

Sony has launched a strong product into the MILC (Mirrorless
Interchangeable Lens Camera) segment, while retaining their DSLR
range.  Even there, the reflex mirror is being challenged by the fixed
beamsplitter.

Olympus has almost completely moved to MILCs with their m43 range.
Their last 4/3 DSLR, the E5 was launched a year ago and is, I suspect,
the only one still being made.  Their next most recent DSLR was
launched more than 2 years ago, but here in Australia only the E5 is
still catalogued as a current model, all the others are drying up
fast.

Panasonic has fully committed to m43 MILCs, their last 4/3 DSLR was
the DMC-L10 from 2007 which is discontinued.

So now we have only four and a half brands selling DSLRs with sensor
formats between 4/3 and 135 full-frame.  Half a brand?  Well, I reckon
Olympus will pull the plug on 4/3 when their lens inventory depletes
to where they either need to recommit to the format by making more
lenses, or kill the format entirely.  It's a loss-maker, m43 is a
milking-cow.  What would you do?

That leaves Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax as the only DSLR makers in
the segment.  Sony is safe with their MILCS.  Pentax has the
capability proven by the Q.  Will they merge the concept with an APS-C
sensor?  Can they afford not to?  Nikon is rumoured to have a MILC
coming soon:

http://nikonrumors.com/2011/08/16/nikons-mirrorless-interchangeable-lens-camera-will-be-announced-on-august-24th.aspx/
and
http://nikonrumors.com/2011/08/16/first-drawings-of-nikons-mirrorless-interchangeable-lens-camera.aspx/

It's reported to be a 2.6x crop factor format, which makes it about a
one inch, or a little smaller than 4/3.  Is the market ready to accept
a smaller sensor?  Japan will, so I guess the rest of the world will
just have to suck it up.

Canon has nothing, only the report of a patent application.  Are they
mad, or just very good at keeping a secret?

Ricoh was out in the cold for years, but kept a good reputation for
quality and innovation in the smaller formats.  They're back now with
the GXR with A12 module for M-mount getting good notices.

Samsung seems to have fallen on its feet even though it blundered by
making its MILCs incompatible with M-mount.  They've got ambition
going for them, but they don't always make the best decisions.

Which means, funnily enough, that while all the previous adoptions of
new technology have reduced the number of brands competing in this
segment, this latest shift might actually increase the number of
brands.

My prediction is that within five years the only DSLRs will be a few
premium and professional models, perhaps one from each surviving

If you are using a Pentax,  which camera are you using?

K20D

Main problems (in order of relevance for me)

1- Weight (and also size but this is OK in the K7-K5)
2- Autofocus
3- High ISO performance

Number 1 and a bit of 2 is the reason why I am not considering the K5 (its
price doesn't help either) and, instead, looking closer to the news around the
APS-C mirrorless world.

For some reason I always thought that English speakers would pronounce better
Jaume than Jaime, since the J sounds as in James and for Jaime it sounds like
in Javier Bardem.
But it seems that the 'au' combination fools a lot and they never know how to

Very nice Miserere.

I agree that the best future for the system is to progress in the
module-with-mount concept, specially if it is an M mount evolution as you

Also, the body may also be susceptible to be replaced, don't it? (more buffer,
better LCD, precessing power...). In this case it should be done in a way that
it retains compatibility with the different modules, assuming that the original

Sure Carlos,

The problem is that sensor IQ

As you know I am considering to upgrade, although recently I am not sure

Photozone and the Pentax 18-135

2011-04-18 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

Since I was interested in the new 18-135 zoom, and more after having seen in
person how (relatively) compact is, I was impatiently awaiting the Photozone
test. Some preliminary comments were not very promising and the final test has
confirmed the worst predictions:
http://www.photozone.de/pentax/597-pentax_18135_3556?start=2

As a summary, I just copy a couple of notes placed at the end of the test:

Just to mention again - we couldn't believe the rather poor performance so we
asked the local Pentax service in Hamburg/Germany for an assessment of the
situation. Result: the lens is within factory specifications.

After the friction this has caused in the community I will request a
statement
from Pentax once again why they think that this is a valid sample.

2011-04-13 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Darren,

I tend to agree with you in number 1 and specially 2 and 3. I always preferred
the classical black background, that focuses more on the pictures although in
this kind of books it presents some problems with dark pictures, where it is
difficult to distinghish the edges from the background.

But this is a matter of taste so I can easily imagine others preferring the
current style.

About number 4, I understant that the spirit of the book is to show PDMLers'
work, not the best work among all PDMLers.

OT: Old printer in new computer

2011-03-30 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi,

My uncle has bought a new desktop replacing a +10 yers old one. The old
computer
came bundled with a printer (HP 720c) and a scanner.
The scanner has USB connection but the printer has still only parallel port.

My question: is it possible to connect the printer to the new desktop with only
USB ports? It seems that there are drivers for Windows 7 but I am not sure
about
parallel to USB converters...does this exist and work with not too much hassle?
Any experiences?

Printers are cheap these days but I hate having to buy new things when the old
ones are still capable to do the job...

Thanks,
Jaume

 Hi!

Picked the little bugger up yesterday. Given that I have K7, I did not have
 to
wait for batteries to charge. Set it up - man, they keep adding options.
Fired
off some shots. Presently I have two major impressions:

 1. The shutter action is even softer than that of K7. The stealthiness of K5
is remarkable.

 2. The AF under plain 60 Watt lamp is more thoughtful than that of K7. I am
not certain as to precision thereof, but it surely takes its time. Noticed
also
that under LV it magnifies the area where it is focusing. May be I don't need
split focusing screen for this camera...

Today I am going to dial in my lenses as Paul says and do some shooting
 with
the family.

Last but absolutely not least, K7 has officially been passed to Galia. I
changed the owner name in the settings and she smiled broadly when I showed
her
that K7 was now hers.

 Boris

P.S. Pricewise, in shekels I paid for K5 less than I paid for either K10D or
K7.

It's a lot better built than DA18-55. In fact, it feels quite solid. It has
some barrel distortion at the short end, but not much in it's class. Not much

compared to DA*16-50, either. Sharpness is good. I have made A3+ printouts

The problem is that is several times more expensive than the DA18-55...

For those who care: I asked PPG about their current voting procedure. I,
 also,
mentioned the extended delay noted by many and the recent seeming ease of
inclusion into the gallery.

Answer was to some extent convoluted and, in my case, subject to
misinterpretation, but it was clear that they wanted to make it more
difficult
for an image to be accepted. They explained that there were so many novas
voters who were overly impressed with even sub common images that too many
were being approved by voters. Apparently the Pentax Team is still in tact
and
it could be that it was being inundated with rejectable images.(?)

In the past, if an image received 20 no votes out of 60 it was declined.
 I'm
now told that if an image receives 12 no votes out of 60 it is declined.
I've
no information as to how long this revised procedure has been in effect.

I so don't get this, but I'm told that due to time constraints, voting may
 go
on beyond the 60 to as many as 200. Couldn't get a clear answer as to why.
Why
should the largly dead horse voting be allowed to continue, thus detracting

 Won't be asking again.
