Stark and spooky, though. Nice tones!

 Thanks Charles.

I hear you on the elevation and angle. This photo was made with the
tripod as high as I could set it. It was actually well over my head,
I could NOT see through the viewfinder at all. I'd have liked to get
a teeny bit closer with just a little bit more down-angle, but I
couldn't get any closer to tip the camera down for separation as the
tripod legs would show up in the frame.

To adjust framing, I used the digital preview function to make snaps
and had to evaluate what was on the LCD looking at it rather
obliquely. Awkward but it worked ... took about four-five preview
captures to get the framing and focus where I wanted.

A Live View with an articulated LCD would have been a big asset for
much of the day's shooting. I used this technique with digital
preview on the K10D a lot of the time in very dim circumstances. I
have Live View on the L1 (albeit without the articulated mount on the
LCD) and find it to be a very very useful feature for a lot of tripod
based work; it also cuts down on your time to do tests for exposure
adjustment as you can see the histogram, live, on the display.

 Wedding photography is hard!

I attended a wedding yesterday. It was a fairly low-key affair, and
there was no official photographer. The bride and groom just asked
for the guests to send their digital photos via email after the
wedding. I was also asked to bring my gear and take photos.

I've done a portraiture course, but don't have a lot of experience
working with my AF360 flash in dark situations. I struggled all
night. Out of the 113 photos that I snapped, about a dozen were
useable. I'm glad that there was someone else who seemed to have
more of an official role than I, and he was using a D70s. I kept
over or underexposing, and couldn't get it right.

Wedding photography is hard. I'm going to stick to landscapes!! :)

Yes, flash can be frustrating. When I had to purchase my first
several months ago, I consulted with Paul S. and Bruce D. and ended up
with a used Metz 45 CL-1. My first outing with it was rather
frustrating (and emabarrasing to be running around with battery
stapped to my belt and a HUGE flash I didn't know how to use :). A
helpful technique I read here (maybe Mark Roberts posted it?) is as
follows (or at least similar):

camera in manual, set A as desired and T as slow as you feel
comfortable handheld
set flash to Auto and set A
fire away

This way you get as much ambient light as possible so that you don't
have a pool of light around your subject. (if you already knew that,
sorry for wasting your time :)

As for the wedding, one very important lesson I learned; there was no
wedding planner, so no one was in charge. The wedding was in a
backyard, as was the reception. After the 'recessional' the bride and
groom just stood at the back and were subsequently mobbed by the
guests. Since I didn't take charge a lot of the formal shots did not
happen unitl AFTER the sun was down, and then there is not a darn
thing you can do about that! Oh well... the lessons you learn, like
yes, weddings are hard! :)

FS - Super-Takumar 50/1.4

2007-06-16 Thread Russell Kerstetter
last time, and then off to ebay...

Super-Takumar 50/1.4 screwmount - $75 plus shipping

Very good condition, on the KEH scale, it would be EX to EX+. The
only thing that would keep me from the '+' is there is a very small
amount of dust inside the glass. The glass is mark-free, the metal
has very few marks, the blades are clean and snappy. Also includes
front and rear caps.

I hate to sell it because it is a very nice lens in very good
condition. However, I never use it and I am not a collector, so it
needs to go. I saw one of these on KEH a while ago in the same
condition, they were asking $85, so $75 seems fair to me.

Payment may be Paypal or money order. Contact me off-list if you're interested.

Thanks for looking (again).

That was shot with the 12-24 at 12mm. I have a feeling that I didn't have
the lens hood fully rotated on. The top right corner had a big vignettte,
which I retouched. I meant to crop the others since they are so little, and

That is just a very short hop down the road from Grosvener Arch, near

prominent.

I like your theme too (I haven't been paying close attention lately,
so I don't know how long you have been doing this theme). I live and
work on the west side Denver, so every time I look out the window
there is a beatiful scene of the foothills... interrupted by
powerlines, barbed wire fences and trash. It is frustrating because
nothing ruins your beatiful scenic like a truck and powerline in the
back ground, so I often times try to embrace it instead and try to
represent it as it really is, like Frank said. It's just hard to make
it look pretty where there is a barbed wire fence and a dorito bag in
your way :)

FS - Super-Takumar 50/1.4

2007-05-05 Thread Russell Kerstetter
once again (and one day late)

Super-Takumar 50/1.4 screwmount - $75 plus shipping

Very good condition, on the KEH scale, it would be EX to EX+. The
only thing that would keep me from the '+' is there is a very small amount
of dust inside the glass. Otherwise, the glass is mark-free, the
metal has very few marks from use, the blades are clean and snappy.
Also include front and rear caps.

I hate to sell it because it is a very nice lens in very good
condition. However, I never use it and I am not a collector, so it
needs to go. I saw one of these on KEH a few weeks ago in the same
condition, they were asking $85, so $75 seems fair to me.

Payment may be Paypal or money order. Contact me off-list if you're interested.

Thanks for looking.

for Shel) on the South coast of Eastern Australia at Minnamurra Point
and shows the Minnamurra village, inlet, Minnamurra Beach and Stack
Island as a panorama spanning approximately 126° horizontally.

The image was formed by merging seven hand held horizontal format
shots at 45mm FL (DA16-45). The image is a testament to the virtues of
the K10D SR system given that strapped to the front of me I had my
nine month old child who was at the time wildly engaged in an air
football match with Mr Nobody. I must admit that this particular
rendering is only low resolution as I lazily used the in camera
generated jpg files to assemble panorama and by default I have it set
to generate 2MP files, it would be much more resolute if I had used
 the associated RAW files.

OK gang, this may be one of the strangest questions asked on the PDML in

sandwich in 1957, I've never had a roast beef sandwich. I've eaten a wide
variety of food in many different countries, but never a roast beef
sandwich. Yesterday I was gifted with a half pound of very nice looking
roast beef, nicely sliced, and ready to go between two slices of bread.
However, I haven't a clue about a dressing. I recall that roast beef goes
well with horseradish, maybe mustard, but beyond that I haven't a clue.
What dressings and accompaniments might you suggest for a nice, tasty roast
 beef sandwich.

Thanks for any and all ideas,

However, this means no support for ASP, which is the scripting

The current www.oksne.net site is paid for another seven to eight
months, so there is time to move the system if anyone wish to take
over, or even build something new. My source code can of course be
handed over to whoever is interested.

The PUGform was developed in 2001, iirc, and Adelheid signed on as
PUGmaster only a year after. We have discussed this, and we think this
is the right time for both of us to step down.

It's been an honour to co-manage the PUG, but all good things have an end.

High-end PS (again) Oly SP-550 UZ

2007-04-21 Thread Russell Kerstetter
To revisited an often-visited topic...

A few weeks ago this topic came up again, which is also about the time
I started looking around for a high-end PS for my dad. I discussed
several of the cameras that were mentioned in the last thread, and I
pointed him to this article:

http://tinyurl.com/b3lun

The article mentions the Olympus C-8080, the current version of that
camera is the Olympus SP-550 UZ.

So we narrowed it down to the Olympus and the Panasonic DMC-LX2.

As far as his concerns are, they are the same, except the LX2 is
smaller and $100 less, while the 550 is larger and has a higher max
ISO of 5000. And this is where my question comes in... does anyone
here have any experience, good or bad, with this camera, and
specifically with this high ISO setting. That feature is a major draw
for him, I just don't want him to buy it and *then* find out it's
crap. He wants something small, but is willing to trade a little size
for not having to use flash. Thanks.

We need to be able to set it up and take it down quickly. We also need
to be able to store it as compactly as possible. Our initial thoughts
were to start simple - a 53 roll of white seamless, stands for the
roll, and a couple lights with either umbrellas or soft boxes. A single
light and a reflector may suit our needs, too. I'd rather not deal with
the heat from tungsten lights, so it's either fluorescent continuous
lighting or monoblocks. Current plans are to photograph the kids a lot,
guests when they'll allow it, and a few models for some projects I'm
considering. One or two people in the frame should be typical.

As far as environment goes, we have 9 foot ceilings and enough space to
move the camera up to about 20 feet from the sitter. Our house is
almost a shotgun style, so width of the backdrop is an issue. Anything
wider than 6' would be problematic unless I moved a lot of furniture
around. Windows face northeast and northwest

Anyone care to offer an opinion about brands, continuous vs. strobe,

Re: Need help deciding between k100d or k10d

2007-04-19 Thread Russell Kerstetter
FWIW... on the l-ion batteries there are several on the list who
bought extras of a non-OEM brand that I beleive are intended for a
Minolta of some variety, I seem to recall the battery being prices
around $18 on BH, if that helps with the decision.

Otherwise... I also have a DL, and am frustrated with MF in any
lighting condition and my personal plan to solve this problem (at the
moment) is to aquire a DS/2, which also has the prism instead of
mirror.

And finally... can you really get $250-300 for a DL on ebay? I
thought I has seen a DS new-in-box with warranty go for $325. I
figured the most for a used DL would be around $200, I could be very
wrong though. :) Good luck in your upcoming enablement.

On 4/19/07, AlexG [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hi guys,

I have been quite annoyed at all the low-light shots that I had to
delete because of slight camera shake. While I'd love to have the use
 of a tripod, I A- Don't have one and B- wouldn't bring it with me if I
did, so I've decided that shake reduction is a feature worth having.

Also the JPEGs out of the DL are only satisfactory under very specific
conditions. The k100d and k10d are both much better from what I've
 seen.

I currently have an *ist DL, with 18-55 and 50-200 lenses. My M42
50mm/1.4 is currently sitting on ebay, because I suck at focusing when
 the light is low.

Anyway, I am in a bit of a pickle. I am hesitating between k100d and
k10d, the former being about half the cost of the k10d makes it
 extremely attractive right now.

Here are the advantages of each, as I see them.

 K100d:
 CHEAP!!
 Lower noise
 Up to iso3200
Better dynamic range than k10d (as measured in raw by Imaging-Resource)
 AA Batteries

 K10d:
10MP makes for an extra 800x600 of breathing room when cropping
 Pentaprism viewfinder
 SSD/SSM/USM in-lens focus compatibility (==future-proof)
Excellent firmware (customizable white balance presets, mtf priority,
 adjustable autoiso range, hyperprogram, etc)

Plan is to sell the DL, body-only for 250-300 on ebay, as it is almost
new (2100 pics vs the 17000 that seems to be the norm here :) )

I will get the FA50/1.4 at the time of purchase.

I have been concerned about the k10d's image quality, both from a
noise and 'banding' perspective. Proprietary li-ion batteries piss me
off because they cost so much to replace.

But the pentaprism looks gd. As do some of the pictures
I've seen. And SSM seems to be the proper solution to the pentax SLR
slow autofocus syndrome, though this has yet to be verified. The
lenses (DA*) seem to be very nice, and quite fast compared to the
current DA zooms so they'd be nice to upgrade to.

If I get the k100d, i can get SR RIGHT NOW and worry about a
super-high-end camera in a year's time when the k10d's successor comes
 out.

Anyway, I am thoroughly confused and I apologize for being a windbag
in this thread. I realize this has probably been debated ad nausea,
but I need some help to push me off the fence in either direction.

FS - Super-Takumar 50/1.4 and M42 adapter

2007-04-13 Thread Russell Kerstetter
Super-Takumar 50/1.4 screwmount - $75
Very good condition, on the KEH scale, it would be EX to EX+. The
only thing that would keep me from the '+' is there is a small amount
of dust inside the glass. Otherwise, the glass is mark-free, the
metal has very few marks from use, the blades are clean and snappy.

Pentax 30120 M42 to K adapter - $20
Like new condition, it even comes in the original bag with instructions.

Payment may be Paypal or money order. Contact me off-list if you're interested.

I forgot to answer your question earlier today. I actually did shoot
a horizontal after I shot the vertical, but I do not like it. It is
shot at 50mm where this one is 200, and there are a *lot* more houses
in the horizontal. When I originally took the shot, I envisioned it
being vertical, so when I followed up with the horizontal I did not
put much thought into it. Why did I see it that way? I am not sure

PESO - A Chilly Afternoon

2007-04-11 Thread Russell Kerstetter
http://www.avocadohead.com/piclinks/IMGP2959.html

There are several types of comments I am looking for:

1) The typical 'good, bad and ugly' comments as well as constructive criticism.

2) Is big enough, or just right?

3) Is it bright enough?

Thanks for looking.

this up.

1- Don't underexpose. Determine where the brightest elements are
that
you want to retain detail in and expose correctly for that ...
Placing exposure properly like that takes a little time to figure
out
and if you're not sure you should bracket exposure around it. The
histogram shows you an approximation based on values in the JPEG
preview that is rendered for every file, but if you're capturing in
RAW you can work with what looks like a little bit of highlight
overexposures on the histogram. It's not rigorously calibrated, you
have to work with it to understand what you're seeing.

2- Yes, this is a problem. Your screen looks overly bright compared
to the ambient light and that's tricking your eye. Better to
calibrate and profile the screen in modest, normal room light and
work that way so that your eyes and the screen are at proper
luminance values. I calibrate my screen for 140 lumens, gamma 1.8
and
5500K white point in normal, indirect room illumination. Move any
light that glares on the screen to a different position so that's
not
a problem. This will make a huge difference in how your photos

I did used Picasa for the most part on my PC (remember the part about
being frustrated with the GIMP :), and it did a pretty good job. I
actually liked it better than iPhoto. I cannot speak to the technical
aspects of conversion and adjustments, etc, but as far as the
useablitly, I think that it is a little more flexible than iPhoto in
what you can and cannot do. Although, I believe it is the newest
version of iPhoto that has the thouch up tool, which is kind of handy.
I also like the non-destructive aspect of LR, Picasa and iPhoto,
makes me less scared I am going to destroy something.

carrying the wife's iBook up stairs when I fell and used the iBook to
break my fall :(. I hit so hard that the whole thing bent, the HD
bent as well (shattering the insides) and I even had one IC that
popped apart. All that to say... laptop HD's are pretty tough...

oh yeah, and good luck, if you alread haven't checked eekbay, you
might, there are lots of people like me that trash a laptop then sell
the parts

Late last week I was doing *something* with my 50mm Takumar macro

the Takumar. At first I had no problems. There is a dent in the
upper case of the Powerbook, between the space bar and the trackpad.
However, as time has progressed, I have noticed the dreaded spinning
beachball popping up more and more, and there's a steady, droning
whine that comes from just to the left of the trackpad. Sounds like a
fan, and I think the hard drive is located there. Not good.

Anyway, I can't deal with these any longer so I will be taking the
 computer in for a servicing. It's 2.5 years old. I hope that it's a
reasonable cost... I saw the price of a new upper case for the
Powerbook ($149) and i don't like it. I can't live with this the way
 it is, though. :(

I tried to inspect it myself, but only made matters worse by stripping
 a screw.

Re: OT: Web site review

2007-03-26 Thread Russell Kerstetter
well, everyone else has already commented on the technical side, so
there is nothing that I could say to help you there. However, I too
hate 'fancy' sites that hijack your computar etc... and no I do not
think your site to be too spartan. Basic yes, but if were to make a
few changes mentioned here (most of which I would not have thought of
on my own) then you will be good to go.

I hate fancy flashy sites. So mine probably appears a bit spartan. But
I would like to know what you all think. Thanks a lot.

lens hood advice

2007-03-22 Thread Russell Kerstetter
I have an A24/2.8 I would like to be hooded. What longer hoods have
you had success with? Also, I will be buying metal, not fold-able
rubber. Thanks.
