[Ql-Users] QL Today - Final issue, final orders and a surprise
Hi folks, just wanted to report that the next issue of QL Today is under preparation. It will have 48 pages and will come again with a bonus DVD. Urs König is preparing the DVD and he reported it to be full. All issues of QL Today (including the next one itself) will be on the DVD in digital form and - a surprise: QPC2 Version 4 will be on the DVD - thanks to Marcel Kilgus in full version. Plus loads of other material - Urs was quite busy. I have reduced the subscription rate on http://smsq.j-m-s.com - if you don't want to miss issue 4, then you can still subscribe to the current volume and get all 4 issues in one go as soon as it is ready. Please note that the latest date to place your order is the 30st of August - I need to know the total print run by then. I will not be able to produce any re-prints as I used to do this in the past at the time of the next issue print, but as we will not have a next issue, it will not be feasible (costs are too high). I am very glad that we finished this volume properly with a positive big bang issue and not finish half-way or disappear like several other projects in the past did. It has been a great time and I want to thank everybody who helped in the past 17 years - editors, authors and readers! So don't miss the very final issue! Who knows, it may well be a collector's item in some years - and one thing is for sure: there won't be many! Jochen ps: the end of QL Today does not mean that I give up the QL! And if you like to use QPC, you may find that QPCPrint is something you need as well :-) Available from J-M-S, of course! -- Jochen Merz Software - Kaiser-Wilhelm-Str. 302 - D-47169 Duisburg Tel. +49-(0)203-502011 Fax +49-(0)203-502012 Email: s...@j-m-s.com Homepage: http://SMSQ.J-M-S.COM ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
[Ql-Users] Fwd: QL Today v16.2
... mail from George Gwilt: Hi Jochen My copy arrived in Edinburgh before 11th December. I could not put this information to the QL users group because none of my emails sent to them are now getting through. Bruce Nicholls is currently trying to correct his but with no success so far. [Ql-Users] The next issue of QL Today will soon be on its way :-)
We (the QL Today team) are glad to announce that the current issue will be ready earlier than scheduled. Issue 2 of Volume 16 just went to the printer and will be shipped in two or three days ... and hopefully will reach all of the readers well before Xmas! Jam-packed 46 pages of interesting articles covering many different topics! You can still subscribe, of course, and get issue 2 as well as issue 1 including the DVD. Hi Peter, seems to be - you all issues except the ones to Germany were mailed at the same time, same post office (of course). March and June issues seemed to have arrived quickly at all destinations. I still don't think the Austrian post office stores the issues for different times before they get delivered to the various countries - the earlier they get them over the border, the earlier they have space again (at least that sounds logical to me). Anyway, I am sure it will arrive in the UK sooner (and hopefully not too much later). Cheers Jochen Peter Baily wrote: Hi Jochen! No new issue has yet arrived here. Re: [Ql-Users] Epson EPL-6200 compatibility with QL
Hi Davide, as far as I am aware, the EPL-7100 and EPL-8100 were the last models which supported full ESC/P compatibility. Later models (all ending in x200 or higher) had a more limited set, or no compatibility at all. I remember that one of my German customers (was it Ralf Reköndt?? - Ralf reads here so he will know) had one of the more recent models and we wrote about it several times ... I do not remember if he was happy at all with the printer. I looked at laser printers some years ago and discovered that some Brother Lasers supported EPSON ESC/P and were REALLY cheap too! Maybe that would be an option for your friend to look at? Cheers Jochen Davide Santachiara wrote: I was asked by a friend whether the Epson EPL-6200 laser printer (which shall support fx codes) is compatible with QL systems and software. Re: [Ql-Users] The QL Future
Hi Norman, My Articles in QL Toady are a mystery to me. Not that I don't know what I'm writing (well, most of the time I do!) but the lack of feedback from almost everyone in the entire world - I sometimes feel that I'm writing for three people - Me, George and a chap called Hugh Rooms who called me to task some time back and made a contribution to the Assembly series. It is at least for FOUR people - I read it when I lay it out and enjoy reading it, by the way :-) Every time I ask for feedback, the silence is deafening. It is generally very hard to get feedback, and it was already hard 10 years ago. One last point, no-one makes money from the QL any more do they? It's a hobby now, that's all. I would think so too. I enjoy doing the magazine and hope to add my share to keep the QL scene alive... as you will be able to see when the new issue will arrive (all posted, so you should have it sooner or later ... except from the visitors of the Vienna show who got it personally delivered), I have not raised the price, and added extra pages as well. Fewer subscribers mean, the costs per issue increase - the amount of time I have to spend remains the same. And yes, it's a hobby for me too. I still think QL Today is a kind of glue which keeps us QLers together. I am sorry I cannot pay for the articles, and I am sorry I don't earn money from the QL anymore (when I did many, many years ago, it was a rather more enjoyable time than it is now in some cases, but money has to come in somehow...) ... and the advertisers merely pay and paid in the past years for the copying costs of their advertising page (nothing to earn there too). And, as Marcel wrote to Rich's mail - I also feel when I put things about my own products into Wikis, it could be regarded as self-advertising. Hopefully this will interest more people in real QL-hardware. You know that I started a little initiative for a new production-run of Q60s. Although it isn´t 100% sure, that there will a last production run (some parts of the Q60 are hard to find in the meantime and Derek would have to solder and test all boards alone, which is a huge task) there is still hope for new Q60s. Re: [Ql-Users] Happy New Year
Hello Adrian, I am sorry to say that what YOU write about Royal mail is true for Deutsche Post too. They save on everything you can imagine: they took thousands of postboxes away, so that millions of customers have to go/drive longer routes to put their letters into boxes (and then they tell us something about green post). Last summer, they did not deliver post on Mondays (as an attempt to save, and see how the people reacted). Large letters and parcels without even a single delivery attempt happened here too several times. There was too much to carry, was the apology after my complaint. Well, if they reduce the number of postman every other month, there IS probably too much at some stage. I call this FRAUD, as I pay for the delivery. And - I have to drive through half the city to pick up the goods as they removed this facility from the local post office. When I catched a postman putting the card in (which said I was not at home) and NOT having the item with him, I reported this to the local TV and press and got the item delivered manually... and that has not happened to me anymore. And you think the UK postal services are bad... I guess that is fact more or less everywhere where the customer does not count anymore... Cheers Jochen Adrian D. Ives wrote: Jochen, Still no sign of QL Today here in Manchester, but I have to say that, for me, the Royal Mail no longer serves any useful purpose. After all, if you have a postal service that doesn't deliver the post, that leaves red cards without even trying to deliver the parcels that they never took out on the van in the first place, then they should simply cease to exist. I'm afraid that the Royal Mail is now the very epitome of what the United Kingdom has become over these last fifteen years: a bureaucratic nanny state where the only thing that matters is making up new rules and finding new ways of not providing a service to the customer. Hi Sjef, Any chance for another Eindhoven meeting this year? I hope for a meeting end April and the beginning of October. I will try my best but it isn't sure yet. That sounds good. But please not the first weekend in October - this is usually combined with a bank holiday in Germany. I guess the post services in Europe have cut down their services over the years and are not able to handle christmas post properly anymore. Hello Gerhard, As you know (or not), I like robots beside of computers - I just learned that the Eurobot-event (look at eurobot.org - www.swisseurobot.ch) takes place end of mai 2010 in Rapperswil (Switzerland), so it is ok for me to have the QL-meeting in june... Oh, Rapperswil - just at the opposite side of Pfäffikon, where the nice Alpamare is located :-) Looking at the votings, we are ready to have our QL-meeting in june: Do you have some preferencies ? (friday+WE or WE+monday or no WE at all ?) I have no calendar with Feiertag church festival/bank holiday ? Thank you for telling me, if you have a particular liking 3rd of June: Fronleichnam (AT+D) That's the only bank holiday I'm aware of. Could possibly help some visitor creating a long weekend for travelling. As I have voted for June only, it's only fair that I'm not difficult about any dates in this month. We have no plans for June at all, so I go along with whatever the others prefer. We know from the past 20 years or so, that more people can make it over the weekend. Hotels often give better deals if you include a weekend etc. Don't know about airfares ... maybe people should let you know how they plan to attend? Plane, car, train...? I assume it could be better to put it on a weekend, as more people may find it easier to free one or two days around a weekend for travelling than 3 or 4 days within a week. Re: [Ql-Users] The Tebby Files
P.S. The 'new look' magazine is fine; even if a bit thinner it has not lost any of its quality. Thank you. I did some tests and it really feels thinner because of the 80g cover paper instead of the 160g. However, using 160g would mean: losing more pages. Actually, the way it is, it was heavier than 100g anyway... but as I sent it from Austria, it was affordable. (the subscription price only works out by sending it from Austria... or send a package to the UK and have most items sent from there). The font is still pretty large compared with some magazines. I wonder if other European post offices have started charging by size as well as weight like Royal Mail. If so, a thicker A5 format might work out cheaper to post than A4 for the same weight. Well, it took Royal Mail a long time to catch up with Deutsche Post. They started to charge by size many years ago (everything greater C-long triples the price, no matter if it is 5g or 500g ... no matter if it is A4 or A5 ... and then by thickness ... if thicker than 1cm, you go for 4 times the price). This, however, does not apply to the Austrian post, luckily. I will send the issues before Xmas from Austria, and mid of March as well, so it is not a serious problem for the next two issues. Also, adding 2 or 4 pages will not be a major problem either. So send in your contributions as well, please :-)) I think we have done a fairly good decision as well, being able to drop the price slightly (instead of having to raise it considerably, as we skipped last year)... and considering that 13 years ago, when QL Today started, 12 or 14 of the 56 pages or so were ads ... which they aren't nowadays ... Again, please send in your contributions, as Tony's next part of the article won't fill a whole issue ... and we still want to have a good mix, even with fewer pages. [ql-users] Eindhoven and Byfleet
Hi everybody, just wanted to say that I'll be at the Eindhoven QL meeting tomorrow, Saturday - same venue as always (St. Joris College, Eindhoven, NL). Will bring the usual range, but if you want anything special please let me know today. QL Today will hopefully be ready for Byfleet. I had a bad cold last week, and headache/migrane often 4 or 5 days in a week (including today), therefore I am behind the planned schedule. Will try to do my best, as always. Now the bad news: I was planning to come to Byfleet together with Bernd Reinhardt. Bernd told me yesterday that he can't make it... he's got the workers in his house (new pipes, new bathrooms for him and the flats he rents out) and the schedule here is way behind schedule, he said. Missing parts are supposed to arrive any time in the next two, three weeks - so he has to be present and definitely can't be away for that long weekend. I may have mentioned it before, with my current health situation, travelling long distances on my own is impossible. I am very, very sorry having to say that ... and we both hope to be able to make it to Hove and/or Byfleet next year. Sorry Ken, sorry John (can't bring the items as discussed ... if you think it makes sense to ship them, I'll find out about postage), sorry to everybody coming to the show and expecting me to be there. Fortunately, you can get all of the JMS products from Roy. To be PRECISE, DP holds (or held, or whatever the situation might be) the right to sell the ENGLISH version of QMON. The agreement version with TT was that I can continue selling QMON/JMON with German manuals, and do upgrades from QMON to JMON for both languages. I myself only use it to debug the core and screen drivers (and even there I've managed to do that for 8 years without it! I've created this only fairly recently). Everything else I do with jmon. Re: [ql-users] Printing with QPCprint via XChange
Maybe you should try fiddling with the Extended properties of the printer, e.g. disable the spooler and send contents directly to the printer. I had to do this to connect an EPSON POS printer, program it via QPC and get immediate reaction on every byte sent to the printer. Re: [ql-users] Printing with QPCprint via XChange
Hi Bill, no, confusion. Ralf asked about programming, not the Windows settings. I referred to the Windows settings. Try right-clicking the printer, properties, Advanced or Extended or whatever (I can't tell, I've got a German Windows) and there you can disable the spooling. Nothing to do with programming. I also had problems sleeping on Friday night due to the noise from the heating system (I had left my window open all evening so the temperature itself was okay). Saturday night wasn't so bad, which probably had something to do with getting to bed late after consuming plenty of Guinness and red wine before/during/after the evening meal! Indeed - there was a heating problem. Other than that, I had a great time. Yes. Two comments: 1) We could have done with more space in the main room on Saturday. Yes. It would have helped if the air in the room had been a bit better too, but that was probably also down to the heating/failing climate control. Although it was said that on Saturday, 42 visitors were present, it looked a bit empty due to the talks. Maybe it was also that I missed some of the usual visitors from abroad ... I spoke to Friedemann, who has organised the QL meetings in Berchtesgaden in the past 4 years or so about 4 or 5 weeks ago. it looks like is fact now :-( There was no feedback whatsoever to Friedemann or us at QL Today, so why bother? Sad, as I would also be there this year (we always planned our stay in that area around this date after Friedemann had started the shows, and did so in case it would happen again this year), but without any interest at all... H! I now wonder what I bought from Jochen when he sent me QPTR. I thought that was the Pointer Environment by itself. What I got was the QPTR Manual (now much used), a set of Qmac macros for programming assembler pointer programs using Qmac, QPTR extensions for programming Pointer Environment in SuperBASIC and some demo SuperBASIC programs. Well, QPTR *WAS* the manual, the demo and macros on the disk plus the extensions to program the Pointer Environment from BASIC. :-) PTR_GEN, WMAN and HOT_REXT, the so-called Extended Environment, always came with every JMS program which required it (QD, Fifi, QSpread ...) (visually free to the customer, although I paid Tony Tebby royalties for the EE for every new sale, until recently, when he decided he did not want it anymore) What would one do with a separately bought PTR_GEN and WMAN and no program which uses it, I wonder Not much - except from having non-destructable windows, probably nothing. Re: [ql-users] Just an idea for a new Product.....
Hi Jeremy, Tis true! I use thunderbird. It allows you to inspect thesource; and it is plain text. However under normal display it converts text strings that start with http: into a URL. Similarly, it converts all the and at the start of the line into pretty formatted coloured sidebars. There really is no reason why anyone should need to send email in html. However, the main point is, that unless the body of the text in an email tells me why I'm supposed to click on a link, then I'm unlikely to. I receive too many to follow random links without knowing why. Something as simple as Follow this link for Jochen Mertz' special offers would probably have done the trick. It has a header trader's ads ... not go to trader's website (Maybe you should put this in capitals only, double-underline it, Tony) isn't this explaining enough what the links are? And Roy's link even says showflyer. Honestly, if you need the explanation follow this link on a highlit hyperlink, you may as well ask for information to be added how to click on a hyperlink or general explanation what a link is... So what I am saying here is: whatever we do, we can't please everybody. It is always too much for some, too few information for others. But somehow I had the feeling that it was just about right for the majority. Obviously not, as you do not seem to be the only one who missed it. In my opinion it is not a good idea to look for maybe a few potential new customers which may be out there somewhere and forget about the impact to anybody else. [ql-users] QPCPrint othe releases
QPCPrint has been released at Hove :-) ... price is EUR 39,90 plus postage. ... and so was QL Today issue 6 and EasyPTR 4 ... I will update the website soon, but we just returned last night from the UK and it seems I catched Roy's cold. If I feel better tomorrow, I'll send the QL Todays out tomorrow, otherwise Thursday or Friday at the worst. Jochen François Van Emelen wrote: Dilwyn Jones schreef: SNIP 7. Re: [ql-users] A QL in Spain
TRUE! I don't have a problem with the Eindhoven date, but it could be a lot of travelling for Roy, Tony Marcel. Well, in this case it would be best to limit it to the first week in June, i.e. 1st to 8th. Flights seem to be cheapest on Wednesdays anyway :-) Jochen gwicks wrote: - Original Message - From: Roy wood To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, January 24, 2005 9:26 PM Subject: [ql-users] A QL in Spain Jochen, Marcel and myself are planning to be in Spain at some point between 1st and 16th of June. Nope - the Level 2 drivers weree seaparate unfortunately Can't remember who did them - Jochen do you recall? I think the Level 2 drivers came with the ATARI Emulator and GoldCard and QXL... too long ago for details. Done by QJUMP, of course... Re: [ql-users] How many repeats this time?
No problem with Mozilla 1.8 ... and 32k emails in a single folder (my mail folders count a total of over 700MB, so I doubt it's a size problem either). I thought they were both based on the same code, working on plain ASCII email text files. Just put the large ASCII files into the local inbox and they are all there. One of the advantages of Thunderbird is that there are dozens of extensions available. You can customise it to have the features you want, instead of being lumbered with them whether you want them or not. other features I like are the built in spam filtering. Also, even when outlook appears to be configured for other alphabets, the use of those characters in the titles and sent fields, results in hieroglyphics in the inbox view. Not so Thunderbird which seems to handle it all fine. Thunderbird cannot handle however a lot of emails... for example on my Opera M2 I have more than 32000 emails... When I tried to import them in Thunderbird... well let me say that it didn't go well with it :-) Phoebus ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Hello, Roy wood wrote: Just to put another issue into the mix here, John Mason called me last week and asked if I would organise the 2005 Hove show so it could be the AGM. I have looked into dates for this that would fit Quanta's schedule and I am preparing to book the hall for 17th April. This may have some bearing on the likely date for QL 2005 so I thought I should let you all know now. I would also welcome input from any traders would have a problem with that date. Sounds fine. If Quanta cannot organise the QL2005 why don't we do it ourselves and charge a small admission fee? Indeed, better have *A* solution than no show at all. [ql-users] QL Meeting in Spain
Why not in Spain the next year? We will celebrate the 20 aniversary of the QL Spanish Version. We have already place. It will be in Madrid, on March 5. would you like this? Well, we would like to come! Roy Wood, Marcel Kilgus and I have already discussed a possible meeting in Spain some months ago (Madrid, Barcelona) in combination with a short holiday, but we did not know whom to contact. So we asked Graham Wall, who partially lives in Spain, some weeks ago, and he forwarded our request. However, March is not really ideal for a combined short holiday (and a visit to the roller coasters at Movie World Madrid) :-) We would really like to come, and Madrid sounds perfect, but would prefer a nicer time of the year, like end of May, or June. It seems to be a very good coincidence, and we'd like very much to come and meet Spanish QLers ... Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.quanta.org.uk/mailing.htm
Re: [ql-users] Canon Printers
Put another way my life is not dominated by the QL. When I have to buy a new printer there will be a lot of things I shall take into account in making my choice and the QL is just one of them. I am not going to waste time or money looking for a QL compatible printer when the QL community has pussyfooted for years on solving the problem. More provocatively, in April 2004 three leading lights of the QL community sat on a Florida beach and decided that solving the printer problem was one of the main tasks for the 12 months ahead. We are now almost halfway through that 12 months. Could they give a progress report please? Well, we did not decide it was one of the main tasks, we all KNOW it is extremely important. However, there does not seem to be an easy solution. We discussed it several times later, but it still looks like a very difficult task. In the end, we need an easy-to-use, transparent solution, which needs to work on more platforms than QPC. This makes it even more difficult. Re: [ql-users] Canon Printers
studies to scrap direct printing from the QL completely.) Why? I use an Epson 740 connected to PC by usb and at one and the same time (can't spell simutainly) connected to a QL by parallel port ( it has a mac port also ), although I can't say if this model or an equivalent is still out there, Jochen would know maybe. We are still using Stylus Color 740 and 900 together with QPC. Both printers are rather old (4...5 years, maybe even older), but print very well. The Color 880 was the last model EPSON made which had the ESC/P2. I also tried Canons, but recent models (SmartBase, or the brandnew IP series) does not recognise a printer language. You can send whatever you like to them - they do not even react at all. And to the obvious question - no I have never attempted printing from both computers at the same time (;-) I have not either, but they are all connected via USB anyway. As far as I remember the manual does not say you can't use both ports at the same time... Jochen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.quanta.org.uk/mailing.htm
[ql-users] Menu_rext
Tarquin Mills wrote: Marcel Kilgus wrote: Michael Berger wrote: Completely agree. Having the configuration information within the executable file itself is a messy and error prone thing. Why's that? What's error prone about this? And once you're used to this, it's actually a piece of cake. Level 2 is especially nice because it can update new versions of an application to the old configuration. Very convenient. Anyway, sorry for the dumb question, but isn't both Menu_rext and MenuConfig provided on the QPC disc? I might be wrong, I don't put the disc contents together and haven't seen an original disc in ages, but I thought this was the case. Menu_rext is not on the Q60 support discs for the same reasons, so I need a copy to. Has there ever been a version of Sernet for non QL computers and is there enough documentation in the public domain for anybody to write one? Well, Menu_rext is not freeware, to start with. Everybody is welcome to bundle it with his product for a small royalty fee. This is how it was in the past, and this will even apply to brandnew products like QDT. Nobody has approached me to have it bundled on the Q40/Q60 support disks, so it is no surprise it is not on there... but everybody is welcome to ask! And yes, it was not originally on the QPC disk as QPC did not have Level 2 right from the start, if I remember correctly. And when it had been implemented by Marcel, I simply forgot to add it. Mind you, all of the QPC customers seem to have other products containing menu, as there was not a single complaint over the years. I remember very well that at this time, QPC1 was also on the disk and it was completely full - we had to remove stuff. Probably about time to deliver QPC2 on CD... [ql-users] Email problems
Hi everybody on the list, I read about missing emails. Well, very strange things are going on. I ran several tests with Wolfgang Lenerz, for example, and only 3 of 4 mails from Bruce arrived at j-m-s.com Mails from some sources do not arrive at j-m-s.com at all, although they are whitelisted (they don't get through if no spam filter is active at all!). SOMETHING in the world wide web is filtering mails (or throwing them away) without notifying the sender. This is reproduceable in some cases, in other cases it is random. My provider has no clue either, but in the reproduceable cases the sending server refuses to connect to the receiving server. Fact is: it is unreliable and it is related to j-m-s.com (my main account). I would guess that due to the massive number of faked virus mails (I get the bounces, so I have an idea what is going on), j-m-s.com may be on some internal black lists (I checked all public lists, not listed in any!). Therefore, please send all mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the time being! If you have sent me mails during the last few weeks and you had no reply (which would be unusual, as I tend to reply very quickly) then please send it again, but to my .DE account!
