A triumphant return to this thread... so after noodling through (with all
your assistance) my 1xN thoughts I doubled down by shortening my chain on
the existing Sugino triple and continuing to ride throughout the month of
June and July. I never missed my big or small ring and was getting

For my bike coffee kit so far I've stuck with my old tall 1 qt aluminum kettle
that came in my scout camp cook set. It's light, fits the alcohol stove inside

I upgraded the shifters and brakes on my '96 Santana from Ultegra 600 STI
shifters with Erickson Gizmo and XT V-brakes with travel agent to Retro
Shift Audax and Paul's Mini Moto. It was a huge improvement in both
shifting (friction) and braking. I installed Shimano M-324 SPD pedals so

Patrick that silky saw looks awesome (if a bit spendy!). 18-20 diameters
are pretty impressive work! The bow saw definitely could have handled the
tree faster, I did use it for the felling cut but I chopped out the hinge.

that the Saluki, the Shop sack and many of the Riv-popularized components
all worked
My Atlantis was not the only Rivendell in the Almonzo 100, but I am pretty
sure that there was not another Riv in the Dirty Kanza 200 or Half Pint.
The bike performed flawlessly except for my sloppy friction shifting.
About a year ago, I drove up to Spring Valley, MN and rode with Jim Thill
My 61cm Toyo Atlantis will ghost shift, but I always assumed that it was my
sloppy shifting or the rough terrain that I was riding over. I did tighten
up the Shimano bar-end shifters just in case that was the problem, but it
will still ghost shift now and then. I just correct it and keep on

watching the seasons in that area is wonderful as well. I have no idea when it
could happen but it seems like q great place to do a Riv Rally or just a
camping meet up...

Seems to me that many of the underlying design philosophies that contribute to
the modern Riv's are a highlight reel of older steel bike traits that worked
well...
