Looks great! Really want one of those for my Xtracycle!

Only thing I think you need to finish it off is a bit of bar-tape, twine
and shellac! ;)

[RBW] Re: barsack & lights?

2017-11-23 Thread Ty Smith
I'll second Benz's point. You'd be surprised how visible a fork mounted
light is to cars. I know it doesn't seem like it would be. I had the same
thought myself with my Brompton. I have my Edelux on the fork right above
the fender and I usually have a Carradice bag right on top. Though it
lights up the road fine, I was worried cars weren't seeing it coming from
the opposite direction. I tested it by riding toward a large office
building with mirrored windows. I could definitely see the light right up
until I got right to it. And my riding position puts my eye level pretty
close to where a car driver would. The only time someone oncoming wouldn't
see it would be a very large semi-truck or bus, and even they would see it
until they got very close.

However, I also agree with Bill. Don't count on your headlight. Ankle
reflectors are good. I have reflective stickers all over my helmet and I
wear a ProViz vest.

 Side
note: Highly recommend this. At night, it can be seen for a LOOONG way when
a headlight hits it. I also have a light on my helmet. Partially to look at
signs or down at a map, but mainly to look directly at a car that's about
to cut me off.

[RBW] Re: Random OT impressions sought: BF Haul-a-Day

2017-12-17 Thread Ty Smith
Oddly enough, I've been thinking about a Haul-A-Day to replace my
Xtracycle, only because of worsening back issues and nerve pain. The high
step-over and weight of my stokemonkey equipped Xtracycle at is not as easy
to deal with as it used to be.

Sorry to extend this non-Rivendell thread! ;) As mitigation, I do have a
giant Wald basket and small safety triangle (purchased from Rivendell)
which I will transfer to the Haul-A-Day (if I get one, that is.)

(yorkie not included.)

[RBW] Re: Grocery Run - No Trailer Test

2017-12-12 Thread Ty Smith
Good job! Your load rivals what I can carry on my Xtracycle on a normal
grocery run, Very Impressive!

For an extreme approach, below shows my Xtracycle four years ago when I
tried to really push it weight-wise: Two 28 lb boxes of kitty litter, 8
gallons of distilled water, two big bags of chips and four quarts of coffee
creamer.

Very wobbly-wobbly! Never hauled quite this much again.

Fast forward below to last week for my preferred load ;) .

*Rivendell reference:* Note the "HUGE" Wald basket and small safety
triangle, both purchased just last month. Should have gotten the basket *years
*ago.

[RBW] Re: Next big ride and a 1xRoadbike

2017-11-04 Thread Ty Smith
Beautiful bike! Particularly love your harlequin bar-tape job!

My wife/I just did traditional bar-tape with twine and shellac on my Salsa
Casseroll the Rivendell way. We did try to match the leather trim on my
Gilles Berthoud handlebar bag. However, we really admire your bar-tape
with the alternating diamond colors at the bottom. My wife wants to do
mine again and also use an alternating scheme to do either the same thing
you did or similar. It's way beyond my skill, but she's an excellent
gift-wrapper and makes homemade ribbon bows so I think that translates well
to wrapping bar tape.

If not too much trouble, could you post some more pictures of your
handlebars from some different angles?

Below is what she did for my bars. Not bad for a first attempt!

[RBW] Re: Bicycle Belle Ding Ding

2017-11-07 Thread Ty Smith
New to the forum and just have to say I love this post, particularly the
section about your dog. I read it out loud to my wife and we both cried.

I have two dogs, one of which is an 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named
Guinness. He had surgery for luxating patella on both knees when he was
very young. He is still very spry, but my wife and I can tell he is
starting to get achy.He will just come to a stop in the middle of a walk.
When that happens, we just pick him up and carry him home. At 12 lbs, that
is doable.

I am dreading the day when he is in too much pain to walk. I love your
solution particularly since it obviously gave him some relief. We have a
mini doggyride trailer that converts to a stroller. We got it years ago when
he was having his knee surgeries. At least we are ready to go when it
becomes too much for him to walk at all.

Thanks again for the story and the pictures. I hope your dog continues to
feel better.

Best,

Ty Smith
San Mateo,CA

Here are Guinness and Penny in the trailer doing a test-run on my Xtracycle:

Dumb question: I know you checked with Waterford, but did you check with
Rivendell themselves to see who the serial number matches up too? Or maybe
Rivendell themselves sold it initially to a dealer? I just can't imagine

Oh, and your kindness warmed my heart. I told my wife about this, she's not

[RBW] Re: Adam's Chev on the BLUG

2018-01-12 Thread Ty Smith
+1 on the "huge" not being that huge. It's big enough for most things for
me, but when I happened upon the "Giant" size on the Wald site I was
somewhat disappointed that I was not aware there was one larger.

Full disclosure: I have mine on my Xtracycle which is a cargo bike. For
most folks, the Riv "Huge" would be big enough.

I'd just like to be able to fit BOTH my Yorkies when we go for a ride... ;)

[RBW] Re: FS: Brooks Cambium C-17 slate, as new

2018-01-27 Thread Ty Smith
Just an endorsement of the C17. This is a great deal!

I have two of them, but the carved with the cutout. I have been a
tradition B17 guy for years but started having some middle-aged male issues
so tried one out. I found it unbelievably comfortable right out of the box.
I know Neil is selling the traditional model, but the way the rubber acts
as a shock absorber should transfer across to the non-carved model as well.

Aesthetically, I do still prefer the leather B17, but for comfort the C17
is it for me. Another nice bonus is that you do not need to cover them in
the rain. One is on my rando bike and the other is on my Brompton.

[RBW] Re: Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-09 Thread Ty Smith
I consider the layer of dust on my car to be a badge of honor. I probably
to 2K or less per year. It's only on the weekends if I have a long errand
to run with time constraints that I use it. Otherwise, its the bike.

I take Caltrain to work from San Mateo to the city. I ride my Brompton to
and from the train station. On the way home I always smirk as I happily
breeze by all the cars backed up trying to get on 92 to get to the San
Mateo Bridge...

Life is good.
