To address a few questions, I have a set of Ergon grips on the one bike. It had to be trimmed and I bought it used that way. The grip feels nice. On the other I removed the original grips from the start and put on Oury grips. Like them too. I replaced the saddles and put on Brooks B-17s.

The black portion is a regular straight 1" quill stem and the top of it is sized to fit a modern 1 1/8" threadless stem, which is what the silver portion is. Dimension makes this one.

Ed, for what it's worth my Sam has a CX-70, 8 speed chain and XD-2 crank with 43/34 rings. I can ride the top 4 rear cogs in the 43 without any chain rub but it can require a slight bit of trimming from time to time. The 34 ring runs quietly through all 8 cogs. No doubt the Claris will work
