Did you install znapzend without enabling pkgin in the global zone?
If so could you send me your notes not the procedure? Or if anyone else has
successfully achieved this…I’m trying to get it running without pkgin.

Firstly I'd like to thank Jonathan Perkin for his hard work doing pkgsrc.
But could someone please enlighten me by giving me a pointer on how I upgrade a
VM on SmartOS to a new pkgsrc release. Is the reason that I can't seem to find
any documentation on how to do this because I shouldn't be
ataset and it works great.

I'm presuming that you mean to create a user in the GZ. I would create a
dataset zones/home then create a SMF job to (re)create the user after boot.
