Hi Max,

It’s not entirely clear what you’re asking, are you having trouble downloading
things with Freenet?

Hi,

You should be able to download the tray app again and run it, it will ask you
if you want to install again if it can't find your installation.

I saw your name on the Freenet site. Would it be okay if I have you share
some basic info?
I just moved to a new computer with Win 10 (from Win 7), and now I cannot
get diddly squat to work.

At one time I had Freenet... AND Frost working on my PC, then I suffered a
head injury (true), and I goofed
up the Frost part. That was bad enough... but I am pissed at how screwed up
Win 10 is; shoulda never left 7.

Freenet is one of MANY things that no longer work for me.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for ignoring it for a long time, thought the
others would deal with it.
I've forwarded this to Steve Dougherty (aka operhiem1) who has recently got a
Mac specifically to test whether Freenet works on it, and fix eventually
existing problems. He'll probably contact you soon. If he doesn't, please post
on the mailing list again.

You really probably want to leave it with that default localhost-only
binding, and ssh tunnel (ie. encrypted connection) into it from remote
places. Otherwise your communication with your node will be visible to
anyone on your lan, and possibly beyond. (And others will possibly be
able to control your node if they figure out what IP address is allowed
to access it.)

any idea what to set the web config "ip address to bind to" field to? It
is currently at 127.0.0.1 but on my lan it will be on the machine at

okay, I've done that a couple times now and my settings don't take, and I
still can't see fproxy from the other machines in my lan. I tried setting
both the machines that can access and that have full access to my lan,
192.168.1.1/24 and it apparently didn't like the / because it gave me an
error. Something about java number format (sorry I don't have the exact
error anymore). So I set it directly to the host I wanted access from:
x.x.x.101, and I apply the changes and there is no error, but still no
access. I look in the /var/freenet/freenet.ini file and those changes are
not there. I change that file by hand and restart freenet and the
changes disappear as soon as freenet starts. There is a wrapper file that
starts it with a config file in /etc/ however I don't see any variables
there that look similar to anything I'm changing.

Also, the localhost addr in those fields ends with ,0:http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/g/grouchomar137218.html>

okay, that was it. I was trying to access fproxy via w3m and it needed

Just to be clear, the node isn't running on your local machine ... you
just scanned (nmap-ped) for it from your local machine, right?

(By the way, you want to ssh-tunnel into the remote machine that's
running it, which will make it accessible to your local machine from
"localhost"... (man ssh)... ssh -L:localhost: me@remotemachine)

I think by default, freenet/fproxy only allows access from the
localhost (ie. 127.0.0.1) interface, so you have to go into the
advanced options and explicitly allow your machine/subnet access.

Also, some browsers are dumb and assume anything not on port 80 is not
http, unless you explicitly type the full url as "http://localhost:";

[freenet-support] help!

2012-02-12 Thread Kevin Banjo
I'm on the latest version of sabayon linux.

I've installed and started freenet on one machine on my lan.

I nmap it on the local machine and I see a service at .

i try and connect to it locally and get "unknown URI: localhost:"

I see nothing under /var/freenet/logs.

i check the status of the daemon and its still running.

I see nothing under /var/log/messages.

Any clues how to debug this?

Yes, something broke in your logger settings, just delete them in freenet.ini.
The next version of Freenet will deal with this better.

Looks like you have an invalid logger argument "WARN_NG". Were you
playing around with logging? My guess: remove instances of that from
your freenet.ini file, and try starting freenet again.

Yes. Freenet basically is a free (as in free beer) web hosting service,
that can even handle massively popular sites; for free. The data is
stored redundantly across many *other* nodes -- not your own. (Freenet
also incidentally provides anonymity and is immune to censorship.)

2010-10-29 Thread Guillaume LEROY

Thank you, thank you!
I did what you recommended (re-install with version .07) and now it works fine.
I was finally able to download/send messages.
Additional question though: during the Frost installation it said that because
there were apparently more than one node in force, the persistence would not be
available.. What does this mean and how can I possibly check the number of
nodes registered. In effect, as fas as I know,, I only have one Freenet
running...
Thx again for your help!

I can't speak for Thaw or FMS but the problem with Frost is that you
made the "Freenet 0.5" choice when installing Frost. Regardless of
whether you're using Opennet or not you are still running Freenet 0.7
and should select 0.7 during Frost's setup.

The 0.5 network *IS* still active but you are running 0.7 and will
never be able to connect to it unless you install 0.5

It is possible that the board you were sending on frost is under a DoS attack,
this may prevent the message from being inserted.

As for FMS, it's some weird WoT thing, you many need to rate some people's trust
lists up or something in order to see your own messages.

I posted a possible solution to this a few weeks ago if you can't find
any other, here it is again:

To all those who are getting this problem:

I found a solution to at least get Freenet running. The problem seems to
be with the wrapper (i.e. wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe command in the
Freenet\bin installation directory). The wrapper controls the
installing, removing and start and stopping the Freenet service. It
seems this, on some systems, does not install the service properly. My
solution involves running the service as a console application using the
-c switch.

Method: Open a command box. CD to your Freenet\bin installation
directory, and type the following command:

wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe -c "..\wrapper.conf"

The command box will then show you a whole shed load of info messages as
the Freenet service runs (this can actually be quite useful to see what
is going on). Note that the tray icon now doesn't do anything as that
was controlling a proper service, we're now running it as a console
application and the command box remains open while it is running.

To stop the service, select the command box and type CTRL-C, this should
cleanly shut the service down.

I don't know the implications of permissions but this certainly works
when logged in with admin privileges.

If you want to create a batch file to do this put the
following 3 lines in your batch file. You can then either place this
batch file in your startup directory or start it manually:

REM start freenet service as console application
cd "C:\Program Files\Freenet\bin"
wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe -c "..\wrapper.conf"

Mark.

Just click on the button provided. We always provide a means to fetch the data
anyway - usually a link, sometimes a button.

And no, in general you can't. For example for most users PDF files will
immediately open in an embedded Acrobat, which will then immediately download
inline images etc.

It might just say frost. By default explorer doesn't show file extensions.

I guess you're winz victim.

You do have Freenet running and connected to strangers, of course.
You did not unpack frost.jar.

Doesn't it come with readme files and frost.bat?
If not, make one in the app folder.
Mine reads
start javaw -Xmx192M -jar frost.jar %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7

I gave Frost a bit more memory. What the %1 etcetera does, I dunno.

Plz reply below the rest, and also: react to *all* I wrote. Now it looks
like you didn't really read it.

Though the makers may be trying, Freenet does not come in one-button
shape, nor does Frost. That ain't likely to change today, so it's either
an effort on your part or no FN4u.

Please try again: Recent changes to the installer might fix this problem.
Please let us know whether it works - if it does work, great, if it doesn't,
maybe you can help by testing possible fixes. Thanks for trying Freenet, sorry

You might want to try #freenet-es on irc.freenode.net, people there speak
spanish and know about freenet. But there aren't many people there at the
moment.

Freenet 0.7 doesn't install a rabbit icon. But it should make some icons on
the desktop and the start menu. What operating system are you using? (Linux?
Windows?).

The node warns you about dangerous MIME types when it doesn't know how to make
that kind of data safe. It might cause your browser to do bad things and give
away your identity (for example with a PDF). You can either take that risk,
find a way to make it safe, or you can not download the file.

Shall I put this folder in the Freenet folder?

The name I put on Freenet folder . maybe its too long.

At the time for install I had so much other problem . maybe I can rename
the folder?

As I alredy had a folder named Freenet I gave it the name Freenet-prog.

In DOS, with the keyboard I have now, I cant access that folder as I dont know
the ASCII code for that little worm I need to shorten the name to DOS 8.3

So, maybe it can cause problem.

Where to extract the archive to is completely up to the program used to
unpack the archive. I believe both WinRAR and 7zip make that option
directly available.

You could, but you might consider putting it in a separate folder, maybe
"pyFreenet" in the same parent folder as the Freenet folder, though you
could put it just about anywhere.

You can rename the folder you extracted pyFreenet to as pyFreenet
doesn't generally care where it's installed.

By "In DOS", do you mean at the Windows XP Command Prompt? That
supports long filenames.

WinXP, I am able to open with Winrar but how to do with the folder pyFreenet?
Shall I put this folder in the Freenet folder?

The name I put on Freenet folder . maybe its too long.

At the time for install I had so much other problem . maybe I can rename
the folder?

As I alredy had a folder named Freenet I gave it the name Freenet-prog.

In DOS, with the keyboard I have now, I cant access that folder as I dont know
the ASCII code for that little worm I need to shorten the name to DOS 8.3
format.
So, maybe it can cause problem.

the problem may be that you are running java 1.4.2. try upgrading to
jre1.5.0_11

Did you cd into the installation directory?

You are in ~Users/Bob, so this should work:

cd Backup\ Items/
cd Software
cd Freenet
cd freenet07

or

cd Backup\ Items/Software/Freenet/freenet07

Does the command 'chmod' work on your box?

Test this with: chmod --help

It should provide you some information. It should work:
http://www.hmug.org/man/1/chmod.php

Just try chmod +x run.sh again after changing into the right directory
(cd).

When you've got Freenet running:
 - start your web browser
 - go to http://127.0.0.1:

You've got a working installation when this works.

On version 0.7 you need references (connections with other users).
Please read "Important note for first time users" at
http://freenetproject.org/download.html

That's all to make it work.

There are some tools, like Frost and Thaw. These are easy to use. Frost
is something like a news reader and Thaw is something like kazaa. It is
a good idea to use these two applications.

Please keep in mind that you'll find all kinds of stuff on Freenet.
Think twice before you view something. There are horrible things that
you don't like to see. It's a reason why I don't use Freenet anymore.

You are talking about the store-file (it's some kind of swap space). I
started with 500 M. Last time I configured it using 2 G.

It is possible to use an external drive.

It's probably something simple. Don't panic!

do this:
ls -lh ./bin/1run.sh
you should see whether the file actually exists and its size. If the file
doesn't exist
then it's possible that you are running your commands from a wrong directory.
Make sure
that you change your directory to whereever you've installed your Freenet to.
If the
filesize is somehow 0, then something was wrong with your download/install
process. Try again.

[freenet-support] Help

2006-12-26 Thread oregonrebel

I can't install FN on Mac OS X 10.4.9.
I unzipped the archive into a folder, but when I type "
./bin/1run.sh
./run.sh start
"

in Terminal, I get this message:

-bash:
./bin/1run.sh
./run.sh start
: No such file or directory

The instructions say "Basically, all
you need to do is make a directoy for freenet, unpack the tarball into
that directory, change the permissions so that you can read write and
execute as user (non-root) in thet directory and run the start script
using the following commands : "
./bin/1run.sh
./run.sh start
"

What am I doing wrong? And I'm still unclear about using this-I see a
list of "tools", do I need something else to use FN? I want to keep
this as simple as possible. Also, the FAQs do not say how much storage
space must be dedicated to FN. I assume I can choose an external drive?

Why not just stop freenet, you don't have to uninstall it.

I really can't help you if you cannot find logs. I no longer run 0,5 and am not

files in the
directory you installed Freenet 0,5 to, and send their contents, i will attempt

You are talking about 0,5 right?

Firstly make sure that 0,7 is not running at the same time. I think 0,7 can
handle if 0,5
is already running, but it doesn't work the other way around. Also what
were a bunch of
errors? How much memory does your computer have (freenet needs quite a

0,5 can be a solution if anonymity is not a primary concern. The reason why
it's hard to
find refs with 0,7 is to make it nearly impossible for somebody who wants to
compromise
your identity to find yours, with 0,5 your node shouts your reference to the
whole world
as soon as you start it... with no way to stop that.

You can also check out I2P, it is quite nicely worked, but has slightly more
compromising
features than even 0,5 (such as it's easier to identify the person by analysing
the timing
of the availability of the resource).

Anyhow, chose your options carefully.

Free your mind and seek the truth.

You are talking about 0,5 right?

Firstly make sure that 0,7 is not running at the same time. I think 0,7 can
handle if 0,5
is already running, but it doesn't work the other way around. Also what were a
bunch of
errors? How much memory does your computer have (freenet needs quite a lot...
especially
after your database will start growing).
