Re: [freenet-support] Problem installing Freeness on Mac . Thank you for your help

2015-06-17 Thread Dennis New
I'm not a Mac user myself, but people have mentioned issues with
the java detection on Macs before.

On March 29th, Eric said FWIW I think it would be useful on the wiki to
merely suggest OS X users just install the jdk and the jar (Note he
said jdk, and not jre.)

And Dsoslglece said I followed your advice and downloaded jdk,
but again I used the jar installer (not the
new_installer_offline_1467), and it worked fine. And now everyting is
OK and I'm not asked for java update anymore

They also referred to this bug, which might be relevant:

The installation is performer with success.
 The Firefox say:
 Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:.

Are you sure Freenet is actually running? To start it, open a terminal,
manoever to the freenet directory and type ./run.sh start (without quotes).

There should be a wrapper.log file in your freenet directory that tells

AFAIK Freenet still runs on Java 1.5, though there has been a lot of talk of
upgrading to 1.6 it hasn't happened yet. Even if it has been upgraded,
previous conversations on this mailing list hinted that you can install Java
 1.6 on OS X 10.4.

Unfortunately that is not true any more. I accidentally released the new
freenet-ext.jar built with 1.6.

1.6 is available for 10.5 ... but not for 10.4... :(

Either way though, I strongly suggest you upgrade your OS to 10.5. By
upgrading you have more up-to-date software and less security
vulnerabilities, and I know from personal experience that (any computer I've
tested) that was capable of running 10.4 is also able to run 10.5.

Please could you provide a bit more detail:
- What operating system are you using?
- How much memory does your computer have?
- Does the browser show up? Has Freenet ever worked?
- What anti-virus or firewall software are you using? Some have been known to
have problems with Freenet...
- Did you install Freenet under a different user than the one you are trying to
run it under?
- Can you please find your wrapper.log (in the directory freenet is installed

Is the node actually running?

You might want to send us your wrapper.log, that can often be very
informative. It can have IP addresses and occasionally freesite addresses in
so have a look at it yourself first to make sure it doesn't have any
compromising info in.

You might want to send us your wrapper.log, that can often be very
informative. It can have IP addresses and occasionally freesite addresses in

compromising info in.

Is freenet running when you get this message? (I'm guessing it's not.)

(Also, what do you mean "it was overloaded"?)

Hi there,
I'm not sure I'm correct in sending this message to you guys, but
I've got problem I suspect is embarrassingly simple to fix.
Whenever I restart my machine and attempt to connect to my Freenet
node, I am told that I can't establish a connection. This is the
embarrassing part: what do I have to do to "start" my node up again?
-Thanks a lot,

I see nothing unusual in your log. The first lines indicate that you
actually run Suns Java 1.5.

You need to be patient. The messages will arrive.

You need to install the Sun version of java. There should be a package. Most
likely you have GCJ/GIJ installed by default.

Yesss !

You need to be patient. The messages will arrive.

Frost on my Freenet server don't display anything, I'm still waiting !

But now from my machine I succeed to find the right configuration on the
server to connect to with Frost, now I wait for messages and files...

Thanks.

[freenet-support] Problem with Freemail plugin

2008-01-10 Thread Ermanno Baschiera
Hi all,
I loaded the Freemail plugin into Freenet (just to learn something
about it), but I'm having some issues...
I got Freemail listed in the plugin list, but if I "visit" it, it
tells "Plugin not found!".
Then I tried to Unload it, but the operation never gets completed (the
browser still loads the page, but it goes timeout).
Additionally, in my logs there's plenty of this:
"Jan 10, 2008 22:10:06:808 (freemail.fcp.HighLevelFCPClient, Scheduled
job: freenet.pluginmanager.PluginHandler$PluginStarter at 16e4ff1,
ERROR): Warning - no connection to node. Waiting..."
It seems that every 5 seconds, that error happens.

I tried also to rm Freemail.jar.url from /plugins, but it gets redownloaded.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks a lot.

It seems that every 5 seconds, that error happens.

I tried also to rm Freemail.jar.url from /plugins, but it gets redownloaded.

Either install on a PC which actually has internet access (e.g. via Tor
+ privoxy) or wait for nextgens to produce a bundle installer. Sorry, we
will fix this.

Have you chosen as you node's port?!
Don't do this as it's need for FProxy.
Take a random number between 1024 and 65535 and try again

[freenet-support] 'problem loading page' - 'unable to connect'

2007-02-12 Thread Suomen Kuningas
I have just installed freenet 0.7 and frost and I am new to this type of
networking. There didn't seem to be any problems with the install.
I am following First Timers Handbook in the Wiki and I am having problems
here...

Go to http://localhost: If you see Freenet FProxy Homepage of .,
then your Node is up and operational. If not, then either your node is not
running, it is still loading, or something else is happening. See the Help
section below.

I am getting 'problem loading page' - 'unable to connect' with firefox2.
I have a firewall and I have turned it off and quickly tried again, but with
no luck.
I connect directly to the internet.

I went to the help section below but it didn't seem to relate to my problem.

Here is the wrapper.log
STATUS | wrapper | 2007/02/12 16:54:21 | Freenet 0.7 darknet- removed.
ERROR | wrapper | 2007/02/12 16:54:21 | CreateService failed - Access is
denied. (0x5)

So whats going on here?
Thanks for your time.

If I had to guess, it looks like you may be running as a limited user.
The install script is installing a service (which requires admin
privileges). Maybe someone else has an idea?

0a. Don't panic!
0b. Keep node running as long as possible.
1a. Don't panic!
1b. It helps to have frost ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/jtcfrost ) running

2a. Don't panic!
2b. Set your datastore to at least a few Gibibytes.
3a. Don't panic!

4a. Don't panic!
4b. Realise that freenet isn't actually that slow, but rather high latency

This is copied[see below];i can't get into freesites most of the time.
I see the links after surfing freenet but can't reach what i want to
see=very frustrating;what to do?

error: Route Not Found

Attempts were made to contact 0 nodes.

* 0 were totally unreachable.
* 0 restarted.
* 0 cleanly rejected.
* 0 backed off.

The request couldn't even make it off of your node. Try again, perhaps with
the GPL to help your node learn about others. The publicly available seed
nodes have been very busy lately. If possible try to get a friend to give
you a reference to their node instead.

Route Not Found messages mean that your node, or the rest of the network,
didn't find the data or enough nodes to send the request to. You should
retry, with the same Hops-To-Live; if it persists, there may be a problem
(check that your internet connection is working). Try reseeding your node,
and if that doesn't work, contact support at freenetproject.org.

[freenet-support] Problem with the install

Hi, fellas!

I have a strange error during install process: after getting all
necessary files from hdd/inet, FreeNet install program shows:

Unable to write a file to disk. Check that the disk is not full, or
write-protected, and that you have rights to install files. The
installer will now exit.

And, surely, it aborts setup process and exits :(

I have almost 2GB free on my disk, it's not write-protected (even
more, I can see all non-zero necessary files in the temporary
folder!), and have all necessary rights (admin under WinXP). What's
wrong?!

[freenet-support] Problem running freenet after having just installed the software (v. 5.2.8)

2005-10-17 Thread Matthew Hoffman
Hello. I read through this list and the helpful guides on the
beginners site but I am not able to find the information I need.

I just installed freenet on a WinXp (sp 2) box. The installation
process so far as I can tell went fine. However when I tried to run
the software, the system tray incon flashes a ! and the log file
reads:

...
Oct 16, 2005 1:36:16 PM (freenet.node.Main, main, NORMAL): not seeding
routing table
Oct 16, 2005 1:36:17 PM (freenet.node.Main, main, NORMAL): starting node
Could not initialize network I/O system! Exiting

java.io.IOException: Unable to establish loopback connection
at sun.nio.ch.PipeImpl$Initializer.run(Unknown Source)
at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method)
at sun.nio.ch.PipeImpl.init(Unknown Source)
at sun.nio.ch.SelectorProviderImpl.openPipe(Unknown Source)
at java.nio.channels.Pipe.open(Unknown Source)

---
I am assuming that I must have neglected some step so I erased all the
freenet files (there was no applet on the add/remove programs in the
control panel) and re-installed that way.

I thought this first may be a firewall issue so I tried several
options before just turning my firewall off altogether. Then I played
with my router's settings (it has a firewall NAT filter) and
eventually I turned that all off as well.

[freenet-support] problem downloading the readme file

2005-09-26 Thread Matthew Toseland
That is normal, the README isn't used much so has fallen out of Freenet.
If you have questions, ask them here; you can get the README from
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/freenet/freenet/README?rev=1.19.2.11.2.15

[freenet-support] problem to make nodes communicate

2005-04-13 Thread Yanyan Wang
Hello, all,

I am now working on experiments with Freenet on Planetlab. I have had the
problem to make Freenet nodes communicate on PlanetLab for a long time. I have
checked everywhere and it seems that the reason is the listen port of every
freenet node cannot accept connection requests from other freenet nodes. I have
the node start up command like:

ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] /bin/sh
/home/colorado_weevil/weevil/freenet_4_4_4/FreenetNode/N0/freenet_4_4_4_N0_s\
tart.sh

in which freenet_4_4_4_N0_start.sh is a script on planetlab-1.cs.princeton.edu
to call freenet's Java API.

I found that there's only one java process running on the remote machine after
the command is executed.

Instead, if I first ssh onto planetlab-1.cs.princeton.edu, then execute the
command on it locally,

/bin/sh
/home/colorado_weevil/weevil/freenet_4_4_4/FreenetNode/N0/freenet_4_4_4_N0_s\
tart.sh

there will be a list of java processes running.

So I am thinking if the freenet node has not been fully started up on the remote
machine if I execute the start-up script remotely?

Now I am doing experiments with four machines. I created seednodes.ref file for
each node in which the content of myref.txt files of other nodes are included.
I also updated the port numbers in each node's configuration files. The client
commands are like:

java -cp freenet.jar freenet.client.cli.Main --FCPServerAddress $ClientPort put
[EMAIL PROTECTED] file1 --htl 1 --logLevel normal

Do any of you have any similar experiences? I am really anxious to get the
answer. Thanks a lot in advance!

Yours,
Yanyan :)

Re: [freenet-support] Problem using freenet

2004-11-06 Thread evolution
Quoting sutonimh [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Dumb newbie here. Just started using Freenet about 4 hours ago,
installed frost too. Soo far I can't seem to view anything past the web
interface splash page. Various errors, most common is the Route not
found error. Renewed the seednodes. And have tried resetting freenet
 several times. Advice?

Most probably it just hasn't had time to integrate into the network. Let it run
for as long as you can. Check every once in a while to see if you can load
something. It'll need at least five hours of uninterrupted operation before it
starts to retrieve stuff, and then another good chunk of time before it'll start
reliably retrieving stuff. What I've noticed is that Freenet benefits greatly
from as much operation time as you can give it. Meaning, it's not a simple
ramp up to expected operation. The ramp keeps going and going.

A slim possibility, based on your report, is that you have a real problem in the
set up. Try the above time-giving first.

While you're waiting, you can visit:
https://freenet.thing.net/gateways/

It's a list of public Freenet gateways. It's non-anonymous, since your info
travels over the non-Freenet portion of the Internet, so beware. But it's
proof that there is a Freenet, and you can whet your appetite. *g*

Mail this list if you're still having the problem after a day or two.

Interesting, because I was getting Sig11's immediately (w/ 1.4.2) when the
project moved to bigint support and I didn't have the .so files for my cpu.
After I got the new freenet-ext.jar the problem disappeared. And this is on

Although I did update my JVM from 1.4.2_03 to 1.4.2_05 somewhere along the
line, so maybe this in fact is the fix.. I'm not really sure.

How many times have you tried? How long did you give it? What is the message
you get? There are two basic types of message: Data Not Found and Route Not
Found. Route Not Found is bad if true, but sometimes they're not really true.
Data Not Found is no problem. If you're getting Data Not Found just keep
trying.

Open the gateway page, the main page, and then open all the links and let it sit
and try to load. Your new Freenet node will take a while to integrate into the
rest of the network. It sucks, but you just have to give it time. If you left
it running continuously, I would give it a couple days to integrate fairly
well. If you don't run it continuously, run it as much as possible. Either
way, keep requesting pages. The HTML given to you when you get a Data Not
Found message has a meta-refresh tag, so if you leave it sit there it'll
reload itself. Let it do this.

The more stuff you request and re-request, the more integrated your node will
become. The more integrated your node becomes, the quicker and more reliable
surfing Freenet will be.

If it's just the sites, give it some time, they'll probably show up eventually.
It takes some time for the node to learn about the network.

As of the last week it is always replaced when trying to use the I.E.
explorer.

I believe it is a problem that I.E. cannot resolve alphabetic addresses. A
similar event happened on another machine in May 2001 using Windows and I
was never able to resolve the problem (that is, that machine
even with several replacements of different versions of Window will not
access the Internet).

I can use Mozilla as a browser, but having it active does not permit
download of freenet package.

Any suggestions of something to try? Although I've used Linux, I'm not
prepared to really learn to use Linux as a compiler. And I've never used
it for Internet service.

The Capture3 is a sample of the error message given on attempt at download.

RE: [freenet-support] Problem for over a week

2003-12-08 Thread Pete
Hi Gene, welcome to freenet, the error you are currently seeing 'should'
be a rare one, but with issues on the network it's a tad more common,
but looking at the information you posted it's not actually a network
related issue so lets look at the most important part of the post as I
see it
snip
Attempts were made to contact 0 nodes.

* 0 were totally unreachable.
* 0 restarted.
* 0 cleanly rejected.
/snip

Your node didn't even try to connect to the network, it could be one of
these reasons
1)your behind a firewall and not allowing freenet to communicate with
the network
2)You haven't got any seedrefs

Try downloading http://www.freenetproject.org/snapshots/seednodes.ref
into your freenet directory and restarting your node.

Get back to us if that doesn't work and we'll see what else we can
suggest.

I think I saw similar behavior with Phoenix, a browser-only Mozilla

normally. The problem is that for some strange reason Mozilla thinks the download is
complete after 15 minutes
(plus or minus 1-2 seconds). This could easily be a bug in Mozilla, but what I can't
figure out is how to get the
little box back up after FEC has downloaded and decoded the file. Should there be a
link or button that will
re-initiate that part if it broke while FEC was doing its thing?

BTW, what do the forceSave and skipDS checkboxes do? I looked on the freenet website
but couldn't find any
 documentation for that.

I think I saw similar behavior with Phoenix, a browser-only Mozilla
derivative, but only once, and a while ago, so I can't really provide
any decent bug report on that. But I imagine skipDS stands for Skip
data store, so one can verify that a FEC file is available beyond the
local machine.

This is probably a bug GJ fixed recently on the unstable branch. I'll
merge it across soon.

[freenet-support] problem running cvs version

2002-11-19 Thread nicolas fischer
Hi,

I CVSed the sources (nov18, 16:00gmt) and built them no problem (in about 10
 secs with jikes)

now when trying to run it get this queer exception I have never seen before.

[nick@null freenet]$ java -cp lib/freenet.jar freenet.node.Main
Exception in thread main java.lang.VerifyError: (class:
 freenet/fs/dir/NativeFSDirectory$NWalk, method: init signature:
 (Lfreenet/fs/dir/NativeFSDirectory;Lfreenet/fs/dir/FileNumber;Ljava/io/File;Z)V)
Expecting to find object/array
 on stack
at freenet.fs.dir.NativeFSDirectory.init(NativeFSDirectory.java:398)
at freenet.node.Main.main(Main.java:469)
[nick@null freenet]$

line 398 of NativeFSDirectory reads:
NWalk w = new NWalk(root,true,true,paranoidListCheck);
and the NWalk inner class definition looks perfectly normal to me.

Now what am I doing wrong. It seems to be some problem with inner classes.. ?
I tried different compilers, jikes 1.15, sun.javac 1.4.0-b92 and runtimes, sun
1.4.1, sun 1.4.0b92, ibm 1.3.1. The prebuilt 617 jar I got runs fine in all of
the jres. I think os-data is irrelevant. I must be doing something wrong at
compile-time (I'm using the make jar way)

any help appreciated,
nick

[freenet-support] Problem with Freenet behind a firewall on a Linux computer

2002-11-02 Thread Peter Hallberg
Hi
I have problem to run freenet behind a firewall on a Linux (RedHat 7.2)
computer. I have open the FNP port that freenet use in my firewall. I have
also change the ipAddress in “freenet.conf” file to the external ip-number
of my firewall. I’m able to run freenet behind the firewall on my win98
computer and I’m also able to run freenet on my Linux computer when it
connected to internet without a firewall. But when I try to run freenet on
my Linux computer when it is behind my firewall freenet seams to refuse to
start. It seams like it complain about “InetAddress” (ip-address??) see
error message below. What’s wrong and what can I do about it?

(I’m using freenet 0.5 built 529)

Re: [freenet-support] Problem starting freenet

2002-07-03 Thread Greg Wooledge

Jim ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote:

Anyway, I downloaded the latest build and run the start-freenet script.
Freenet went crazy and spawned many java processes and maxed out the cpu
usage. Is this a common problem or should I investigate further.

That's pretty normal. When you first start a new Freenet node, it
has to initialize the data store, which is a CPU- and I/O-intensive
operation. (It creates a one or more huge files on the disk, their
size being dependent on the values you filled in during configuration.)

After that, the many threads will remain (Freenet is inherently a
multithreaded Java beast), but CPU usage should drop for a little
while, if you have a sufficiently modern computer.

After *that*, if you're running a non-transient node that's pretty
well connected, your CPU usage and disk I/O may shoot back up when
other nodes start making lots of requests aimed at/through your
node. If this interferes with other processes running on your
machine, you can throttle it down a bit by adjusting the maximumThreads
parameter:

  # Should we use thread management? If this number is defined and non-zero,
  # this specifies the max number of threads in the pool. If this is overrun
  # connections will be rejected and events won't execute on time.
  maximumThreads=120

Depending on your computer, you might want to lower that to 90, 60, or
whatever seems comfortable.

If you aren't already doing so, I'd suggest running Freenet as its
own user (I cleverly named mine freenet). This lets you stop the
node simply by executing killall java as that user. Also, if
you're using per-user process limits, then the huge number of
threads/processes that Freenet creates won't affect your normal
user's limits. Finally, it also insulates Freenet from the rest
of your system a little bit, just in case someone finds an exploitable
bug in it. (I've not heard of any such bugs yet, but paranoia is
healthy.)
