You don't create accounts on Pidgin; you create them on a server, then
configure Pidgin to access them. There are many types of server that
Pidgin can use, and for some of those types, there are many possible
instance of servers.

Without knowing which type of server you are trying to connect to and
which particular instance, it is difficult to provide much help. In any
case, none of the servers will be under control of the people who
maintain Pidgin.

Pidgin is a client that can access many different services, and this is

This will be the certificate on the server, not anything that is under
pidgin's control. Pidgin is an, open source, messaging client that can
work with many types of server, including some public services, so there
is no simple answer to your question.

Also certificates have to be signed by a trusted third party (e.g.
Verisign, or LetsEncrypt, or even your own corporate one). Details of
the procedure will also depend on which is being used. (If you are
FurnaceFilterKing, the trusted third party for your public web site is
DigiCert Inc. However, your internal server might be using the old
branding and might have a different certifier.)

We need to add another account for an employee, how do we do that? Please
Reply all when replying back to this email.

Again, this is something that needs to be done on the server, not on
pidgin. Once you have created the account, you can then configure the
new employee's pidgin to access it.

Also note that there is no formal support organisation for Pidgin. This

I've used it in a high volume context, where I make several posts a day,
and it seems to me that many of the features only make sense as a web

tagged messages, and replies to my postings.

The problem I'd have with pidgin as anything but pure email format would
be that it is very low volume. I don't like web sites being able to
intrude, with notifications.

Typically, what I find with support forums, is that the people making
one time appearances, to ask a question, prefer forums, because they are
fashionable, but those who stick around and answer tend to prefer
mailing lists. However both mailing list and forum camps can have a
serious amount of religious fervour.

The risk with forums in high volume cases, is that they fragment,
because lots of people want to own their own forum. Historically, at
least, the reason for actually providing forum infrastructure was
targetting, although the Discourse ones I'm on are only used to
advertise the company owning the official version of the OS software.

Even if mailing lists fragment, you can use mail filters to put them
back together, albeit you still run the risk of the same question
getting asked on all of them, and the complete answer being spread
across them.

Insufficiently specified.

What IM services are are available to you?

Which of those do you trust not to abuse a man in the middle position?

Do you plan to operate your own server?

Do you need end to end encryption?

Do you need multipoint end to end encryption?

How much work are you prepared to put into sending a message?

What is the nature of the threat?

Are you concerned about traffic flow security?

I believe XMPP provides encryption to and from the server, but not
within the server. That is probably true for the supported services
provided by commercial organisations, like Google.

I don't think any of the official plugins implements end to end
encryption, but some third party ones might.

You can always encrypt off line, convert to uuencode or base64, and
paste that into a message, or series of messages, for any text based
service, but, on its own, will not give traffic flow security.

I was hoping someone more familiar with this aspect of Pidgin was going
to answer, but really you need help from someone you trust, as this
relates to the mechanisms that are used to ensure you are really talking
to the server, not to an impostor who is then forwarding things to the
server.

It appears that only IRC and XMPP use this. I'm guessing that you are
trying to access an IRC server run by voxi.ru, but if it is actually an
XMPP one, please let us know.

The could mean:

1) someone is pretending to be the server and hoping you won't check
properly or will override security warnings;

2) Pidgin never had the CA certificate needed to verify the server - was
it working before;

3) The server has updated its server certificate which is now signed by
a new CA certificate (you may want to check you have the latest Pidgin
and have current security updates for your OS - this might be the case
if they were using a Lets Encrypt certificate, as there was a recent,
relatively chaotic, retirement of one of their CA certificates;

4) The server has a certificate that is signed by an intermediate
certificate, which they haven't sent to you, and which you didn't
already have.

There will be differences in how to add a missing CA certificate on your
side, depending on the OS, so you should tell us what that is, and as
you shouldn't take information from lightly used mailing lists at face
value, you really need someone you can trust to make sure that you don't
compromise your machine by adding a certificate that you shouldn't trust
to the extent necessary for your personal security needs.

For background on the concepts referred to above,

may be useful.

multiple people can see and check the answers. Also people don't want
to keep answering the same question, so it works best when people with
the same problem can find the answers by searching.

Pidgin supports a number of service types, and in some cases,
particularly XMPP, a number of organisations provide those services, so,
in those cases, it also provides the ability to configure the network
address for the provider.

If Pidgin was provided for work or education use, the service provider
is likely to be your employer or college. More generally, if Pidgin was
provided pre-configured, you should consult whoever configured the
machine. You couldn't configure it yourself without knowing the service
provider.

Many of the mass market services have now been closed down, but in the
past service providers for those included Microsoft, Yahoo and Google.
I've lost track of which companies still provide public services with
open protocols.

You need to contact the provider of the service you are using.  Pidgin

decide whether or not they are correct.

On 03/08/2021 05:10, M Mn wrote:

Is there truly any way to text free over the internet? With one simple app
without having to download a bunch of extra stuff that needs configuring too?

I assume by free, you mean except for what you are already paying to
access the internet, and the references to extra stuff and configuration
refer to stuff not included by your OS supplier and configuration you
wouldn't have to do to use the internet in the first place, which are
somewhat variable items. What services you get as part of the standard
bundle, with the OS, depends on what the OS developer things the market
wants, as moderated, by any commercial interests they may have in
operating infrastructure.

The biggest obstacle to point to point operation is actually that most
people don't have a first class connection to the internet, but rather
go through network address translation with an unstable public address.

In the early days of the internet, email would have provided this, and
some early mass market ISPs (e.g. Demon in the UK) worked in a way where
their customers had a first class connection to the internet, including
for email. However, with the mass market, came a move to storing
mailboxes centrally and consumer mail programs only having second class
access, using a single relay for all outbound traffic, and sucking
incoming traffic from centralised mailboxes, rather than sending
outgoing mail directly to the recipient's system, and accepting pushes
of incoming mail direct from the sender. The advent of spam supported
this trend, as people started not to trust point to point routed email.

SIP, as used for VoIP, and also capable of text messaging, is similar.
The protocol is quite capable of working point to point, but nearly
everyone uses it via an internet telephony service provider, and uses
phone numbers for addressing, not full user@domain addresses. SIP
implementations do tend to have some support for address translation,
but can have trouble if the public address isn't stable.

The application isn't encrypted. There is no point as it is open
source, so anyone can see how it works.

It supports encryption using the same sort of encryption library as used
by most open source software, OpenSSL.

Headquartered is not a meaningful term for a lot of open source
software, and I think that is the case for Pidgin; it is a distributed
development by an informal group of people.

I think OpenSSL itself is managed from outside the USA, so, whilst
Pidgin packages from the USA may be subject to US export restrictions, I
imagine ones have been built outside the USA.

Of course the services themselves tend to be based in the USA, so will
probably refuse connections from people assumed to be associated with
embargoed countries, and might run unencrypted for others.

Some countries probably still ban the import of encryption software for
use by their general public.

Pidgin doesn't provide a contact address for the server administrator,
because only you, or the person who told you how to configure it, will
know it. Pidgin is just doing what it is told to do, and for that it
doesn't need to know which human looks after the server.

As such you are going to have find that information by other means.

No-one involved with pidgin can help you with the server you are using,
especially when you haven't told us what it is, so even if someone on
the list uses the same server they will not realise that. In general,
no-one on this list has any authority to look at the many servers that
are use with Pidgin.

means that there have been excessive numbers of attempts to do

Error 403 comes from your instant messaging service, not from Pidgin.
You will need to ask them, but generally it means you are not

There is not enough information here for anyone from the service to

No.  The Apple App Store policies are considered incompatible with open
source software and Pidgin uses the GTK+ GUI library which I don't
believe exists for IOS, in part for similar reasons.

I think it is also the case that Pidgin assumes the use of a mouse.

What service are you trying to access, or what protocol are you trying
to use?  There may be IOS applications that are compatible with these.

You need authorisation for Oracle's internal server, not the app. Only
Oracle can provide that authorisation. No-one on this public, peer

Standard response to Oracle employees follows:

Pidgin itself only works on platforms that support the GTK+ GUI library,

You haven't told us which service you are attempting to use, and if that

There is no iPhone build of Pidgin. It needs the GTK+ graphics library,
which is really a desktop library. There is also some reluctance, in
the open source community, to develop software for iPhone, given the
iPhone app store policies.

If you can find the technical details of the service that your employer
uses, which you will need to do from your employer, as the don't tell
the Pidgin users outside of Oracle, who respond to this list, you should
look for iPhone applications that are compatible.

We assume that Oracle uses XMPP, and Google came up with this

when I searched for one.

As far as I know, Pidgin doesn't work with any phone, as phones don't
support the GTK+ user interface library. I suspect you are, as seems
common in Oracle, confusing Pidgin with Oracle's internal IM service,
and you were actually using an application other than Pidgin to access
that service.

You probably need to look for an XMPP client for iOS 11.

Re: Pidgin - Remove Buddy

2017-12-28 Thread David Woolley
From the many people from Oracle wrongly going here to ask similar
questions, that is how your employer's instant messaging server works.
If you want them to change it, you will need to contact them.

There is an internal Oracle URL that supposedly provides more
information, but it is late, and I don't have time to search the list
archives for the last time it was quoted.

I have been removing my buddy multiple times but still it appeared after
I re-logged in laptop/pidgin even though laptop was rebooted.

Also, I have put some selected buddies in the new group name “B” for

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

because its graphical widgets library does, not because it is the main

You can't sign up to Pidgin as it is something that you use to access
the service, not the service itself. You need to contact the people
that run the service you are trying to access, at a guess, your IT
department.

Pidgin simply passes the account details you provide to the service that
you specify. It has nothing to do with determining whether those
details allow you access to that service.

(If you are an Oracle employee, trying to use their service, we know of
a URL which allows Oracle insiders to get more information.)

You need to contact the people running the service, use the official

You need to contact the people who run the service to which you are
trying to connect. They provide the certificate and they check your
user ID and password (authenticate you). Pidgin just acts on the
certificate and passes your user ID and password to them.

By ignoring the certificate, I mean ignoring the certificate error.
When you accept an invalid certificate, you are basically ignoring the
contents of that certificate. The purpose of the certificate is to
confirm that you are talking directly to the service, not to someone else.

The problem isn't from "us"; it is from the people that run your Jabber
server.

Incidentally, if you ignore the certificate on the first error, there
wasn't much point in having one, anyway. (Another possible reason for
the error was that someone was intercepting your logins and collecting
passwords. The certificate stops that working.)

Instant messaging systems aren't interconnected in the way that phone
companies are. A better analogy is that, if all voice phones cease to
operate, you can still send paper mail to your postal address in Texas.
Some IM services use addresses that only they can use, like the phone
number, others allow you to use the equivalent of looking you up in the
phone directory every time.

You cannot log in to the Pidgin IM program, but you can use the Pidgin
program to log in to an IM server. It is the server that is rejecting
your login and you need to contact the people running the server. They
are completely independent of the people who maintain Pidgin, and most,
or all, of the people who use it.

People here cannot tell which server you are using so have no idea
whether they know about your server. I'd start with your IT department.

Re: Other domains

2017-10-06 Thread David Woolley
Users need to have accounts on at least one of the services used by each
of the other people.

Pidgin doesn't care about domain names, but the services may do. I
think at least some services will accept user names in the form of email
addresses with any domain name, even if there are some domain names
typically associated with that service. I think the Microsoft ones did
that.

Generally, you need to understand that Pidgin is a multi-service client,
but the sort of restrictions you are talking about are set by the
server, not the client.

There is no account needed to have a licence for Pidgin, as anyone

Furthermore, is it possible to have a main account and a secondary

Re: Cannot Seem to Make the System Work

Are you looking in the debug window?

I'd expect a lot more output. I'm not completely sure, but I think the
errors you are quoting appear in the main window, not the debug window.

The first error you report is very general, and basically says something
went wrong talking to the server. The second is probably a consequence
of the first.

Without more debugging information, it is anyone's guess what went wrong.

This is a longer description of the first error:

"There was an error sending or receiving on the network socket, or there
was some protocol error (such as the server sending malformed data)."

As you can see, it is very general.

Information on how to obtain a debug log can be found at
.

I"m not familiar with the fine details of the XMPP support, but an error
that says bad file descriptor sounds like a secondary error (a previous
error has invalidated the file descriptor and the code has tried to
continue processing). Are you taking the message from the debug log?
If so, what precedes the final error, as that is more likely to be
helpful.
