I was delighted to find that the old password manager still
lives somewhere in SM's belly:

Do you have the Remember Passwords extension installed?

Known Issues

The Remember Passwords add-on breaks password handling. Please disable
or uninstall this add-on using the Add-ons Manager.

I don't have that add on installed, & just discovered today [since I
posted that earlier message] that Password Manager in SM 2.26.1 is wonky
too. I didn't know it had changed in this version that's why I hadn't
checked it. At first it wouldn't give me anything but cookies, but I
just kept flipping around the choices ... and finally I must have backed
my way into the password list. ;)

Seriously, it isn't working right, but as long as I can eventually get
to the password list, and it will work on web sites, I'll live with
it. I just wanted to post this, because I felt that I left the
impression that everything was working "right" in 2.26.1, when it's not,
at least for me. :)
bj

Does this mean saved passwords may have been working in 2.38 as well,
but you hadn't found them in the data manager?

The "data manager" shows all sorts of data associated with web sites in
one place - cookies, passwords, etc. If you select "Passwords only"
instead of "All data" from the dropdown in the top left, you'll have a
list of just the sites for which you've saved passwords. When you click
a domain in the list on the left, you may then need to select the
"Passwords" tab at the top to see the passwords.

If saved passwords are still not working, try running the new version
with add-ons disabled. Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled, or launch
SeaMonkey using "SeaMonkey (Safe Mode)" from the start menu. Although
you don't have the Remember Passwords extension, it's possible that
another add-on causes problems. I think I've seen mention of at least on
other than Remember Passwords which causes problems, but can't remember
the name right now.

I ran across a few quirks when updating from 2.26.1 to 2.33. As far as I
can tell from a related bug report
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1092810#c16), it looks
like any update from <=2.30 to >=2.31 is probably affected.

Since it sounds like your passwords are still working having reverted to
2.25, try the following:
- Create a backup of your profile (just in case!)
- In 2.25, remove the master password; ise Edit > Preferences > Privacy
& Security > Master Passwords > Change Password, enter the current
password and leave the new password blank (DO NOT use "Reset Password"
as that clears all your stored passwords).
- Upgrade to the latest version.
- Check that the passwords are still there.
- Set the master password again.

Details of my experiences posted to this list are archived here:

Don't just copy the steps in my first post there though - removing the
master password before updating is a much easier workaround which I
didn't come across until later!

I hope that helps.

I'm embarrassed to admit that i don't use a master password, so I would
guess this is not my problem.

I would try a fresh new profile, and in safe mode.

If you still see the problem, I would reinstall.

I don't know what you mean by an "attachment pane." I have chosen to
display details like Recipient, Subject, Attachment paperclip, From,
Date, Size. There are headers for all these in my listing of messages
in each mail folder. This info is in the pane above the one in which
the message itself is displayed. Until today, when I played around with
updating, if the message had an attachment there would be a listing of
attachments at the top of the message (maybe that's what you mean by the
attachment pane), and I could access the attachment by clicking on the
relevant attachment. Left-click to open the attachment, right click to
get a drop down menu to do what you mention.

Please, does anyone have a suggestion for me?

Maybe Messaging's "View / _D_isplay Attachments Inline" menu item isn't
checked.

No, that's checked.

Did you try right clicking on a folder, then Properties,
then Repair Folder?

I tried that and there was no change. The problem is affecting all
folders, in any case. Also, there's an odd behavior when I go from one
folder to another: I cannot go directly. If I want to go from folder 1
to folder 2, for example, I have to click in this order: 3,2, where
folder 3 is any other one. When I click on 3, nothing apparently
happens -- i.e., I still see the message list for 1 -- but when I then
click on 2, I get the list for 2. I hope this is clear.

The attachment pane is normally hidden unless you click the little
triangle to the left of the "Subject:" line. (That triangle also reveals
details like From:, To:, etc. Once you reveal it, you can then
right-click filenames to save attachments, open them, etc. This is true
in all the versions you mention.

As for viewing the messages themselves, what happens if you double-click
instead of single-clicking? Don't you get a new window with the message
displayed?

Ahhh, now I begin to see what you're saying -- my messages no longer
have any headers displayed: no Subject:, To:, From:, CC:, Date:. How
do I get this back?

As for viewing the messages themselves, if I double click I get a new
window just as you say, but it's the same -- i.e., no indication of
attachments.

I wonder if you are now pointing to a different profile. If you have
SeaMonkey open, go to Tools - Switch Profile and see if more than
one is listed. If there are, try switching to the other profile(s) and
see if your messages are there.

Best Regards,

Mark,

Thank you for the input. There is only one profile there. Maybe I need
to consider adding a profile?

Thank you - Samuel

Well, the profile is where all the application settings, e-mail, etc.
are stored, and there is always one there.

If you add a new profile, you can see if a bad setting in your existing
profile is causing problems, but I wouldn't expect your e-mail to show up
there, as the e-mail will (should?) be in the original profile.

I think the next step is to look in your profile directory and see if the
e-mail files are there.

By the way, do you use POP e-mail? Do you leave your messages on the server?
The way most people use e-mail, they use POP and download the messages to
their local machine. In this case, each mail folder will be a separate
file under your profile directory.

Are the mail folder files there?

Mark,

I do use POP e-mail for most of the accounts, in fact it is the only
format with the account which I Am having challenges, permits.

Also, do you think if a total re installation of SM 1.1.14 would be the
ticket to correct this?

Thank you all again.

SamuelS

No. If you've looked in your profile directory and the mail folder files
are not there, re-installing SeaMonkey won't make them appear.

If the files really aren't there, then I have to wonder if you're looking
in the correct location. Someone else here usually provides some information
that helps locate the profile directory - perhaps they will chime-in now and
help?

Otherwise, I'm not sure what the problem is. Do you have a back-up of your
profile?

How about your disk?

Mark,

I think I was confused by your input. I need to be clear that you
understand that the e-mails do show up in my in-box, yet there are a few
which do not show any content or html content, which is not readable.

I have performed each step which P3H recommended and still receive a few
messages a day which cannot be read. Some include e-bay and other
professional messages I receive, which previously posed no problems at all.

Oh... so you can see your e-mail folders which contain e-mail messages, but
when you open these messages, there appears to be no content?

What happens when you open the message, then use view - message source (or
Ctrl+U)? Does that show anything?

I've had cases where really old e-mail message content was no longer visible,
but if I look at the source, it is there. I never figured out what was
happening, as I was able to get the needed content from the source of the
message and move on.

I wonder if SeaMonkey knows that the message is there (through the use of
the index file?) but the actual message is not there? If true, I wonder
if the file containing the actual message content has become corrupted?

I'm afraid I don't know enough about how SeaMonkey maintains messages to
hazard much more than a guess. I would say restore from back-up.

Here is what I suggest.
1) Create a new mail folder (workxx), can be in your current profile.
2) Move any/all unreadable messages to workxx
3) Load up one of the unreadable messages.
4) Dislplay the message source . Should be ^U
4.1) Extract the message header + the first several lines of
the message, and post them as a message here to the newsgroup.
5) Play with the View options: show message body as, show attachments,
 character encoding.

How does the message body look when you look at its source?
Is it present and readable?

Mark,

Thank you for the input. There is only one profile there. Maybe I need
to consider adding a profile?

Thank you - Samuel

Hello all.. I have encountered this before and fixed it, yet cannot
remember how to now.

There are a few messages which I receive that are totally in code, then
others are blank and unreadable.

These messages are from people or organizations which I have received
before and can read on other computers.

I Am using SM 1.1.14 and Vista business.

Thank you again.
