Since installing the ne3w Window-Eyes 9.5.1, the voice cannot keep up with my typing. I have it set for words. Sometimes I don’t hear the word typed because I am on to another word before WE says the word I just typed. There is a slight lag. Re: Need some advice
Curtis, If you didn't see my earlier reply to Linette, the anniversary release is both an update for existing Windows 10 users and the new build for someone just upgrading from an earlier version of Windows. For someone with Windows 10 it's akin to a service pack. It's pretty much a new install of Windows 10. It creates a Windows.Old folder with over a hundred-thousand files in it. RE: New voice work from MicroSoft and WE for Office
Hi: Well, I spoke too soon as to voices. There is another male voice in Narrator. It's called Mark. This is probably best for the AI Squared Window-Eyes team: I can't get WE to use it, because it says it's Mark Mobile. Also, they have David and Zira both Mobile and Desktop. Unless things have changed I wouldn't recommend using Device Manager to get updates. I gave up on it years ago after it installed older drivers or incorrect drivers. You're best bet is to go to the manufacturer's site of the adapter or whatever else you want a new driver for or your computer manufacturer's site because they sometimes use their own modified drivers. Linette, It's both. If you've already got Windows 10 it's a large update akin to a service pack. If you don't it's the latest build of Windows 10. Installing it created a Windows.Old folder that contained 105,699 files and 22,661 folders. And this is on a new Windows 10 machine. Re: os for laptop
all you have to do is open the privacy setting and turn everything off. and do not use a microsoft account to log in. even cortana can be turned off now. it can still be used for operations on the local computer. like loading apps or changeing windows settings the problem is everything is going to the cloud. office 365 ,one drive, outlook etc. with these you have to use a microsoft account to log onto these programs to retrieve your data stored on line. -Original Message- From: Pamela Dominguez via Talk Sent: Thursday, August 04, 2016 3:58 PM To: Micallef Michael at FITA ; Window-Eyes Discussion List Subject: Re: os for laptop Okay, I have a question. RE: buttons and we 9.51
Hi Don, You are, I believe, in a setting dialog within Windows 10. Buttons are activated by pressing Enter or spacebar. Wether or not pressing one has an effect depends on the kind of control which is being accessed. You can tab away from it and Shift-tab back to see if anything changes since some of these are toggles. Also, sometimes, such buttons will open up a series of options, which are displayed when you then tab forward through the dialog. Then, pressing Enter on one of these will select that option. Shift-tabbing back to the initial button and then pressing Enter or spacebar again will collapse options which were offered for those types of controls. This is the unique behavior of Windows 10. When adjusting these controls, there is no Ok button with which to close the dialog and confirm the option you selected. In this circumstance, simply use Alt-F4 to close the specific setting dialog. I use Becky, but I remember trying setting after setting in an attempt to get Becky to work. At first, Becky would not Receive or Send email. then I stumbled upon getting it to Receive, but still could not Send. Lots more Fussing with Settings, and Finally, Becky would Send and Receive Emails. My Favorite email Program is Eudora, and while some here have gotten it to work, I just figured it was past time to move on to something New. Becky is OK, but so far, nothing I have tried is as easy to use as Eudora. Guess it is what you learn first and get ultra familiar with that sticks with you for Years. I have used Thunderbird, Windows Live, Becky, and one other that I cannot remember its name, and for one reason or another, they all seem awkward to me. Go Figure! Well, I just finished logging into and deleting around 250 messages from my gMail account and it went off flawlessly! Not only was I able to log into my gMail account, but I was also able to rather easily delete around 250 messages from my account. Now I realize this is a long way from having total accessibility, but I can honestly say this is an improvement over what i was able to do when I first got Windows 10. I am running the latest version of Window-Eyes and I have had Windows 10 for about a month plus or minus. Now I know this is a long way from total accessibility, but I do believe it is something. P.S. I do go and check the Edge browser occasionally, to see if it is functioning any better. Not certain that it is,but it appears to be improving 'berry slowly' Hang in there and I think we can all have something new to play with. BTW, I do also have FireFox and Google Chrome as well as Internet Explorer so am not to concerned at this time about the accesibility of E dge - although I really would like to be able to give it a good workout! RE: Need some advice
Hi, Rick. I tried sending the text of a message I sent to another list to which I am subscribed using the f-8 text selection method but for some reason it didn't copy and paste the text into the message. So, contact the Microsoft Accessibility Answer Desk at 1-800-9365900. Explain to the agent what happened, and see if the agent will help you download the media creation tool. That is how I got the update rather than wait for the update to be rolled out to my pc. I'm not saying this suggestion will work for you. Mike M P.S. Remember that because the download and installation will take a while to download and install the agent will disconnect the call. My download and installation took about five hours perhaps because of my connection speed, and perhaps as an Ai Squared staff member put it, and I am paraphrasing, "everybody and his brother are trying to download the update." . -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+massey52=q@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Rick Jarvis via Talk Sent: Thursday, August 4, 2016 6:00 PM To: talk@lists.window-eyes.com Subject: Need some advice I tried to upgrade to the new windows 10 today and when I got to a certain point I got the following message. Windows 10 update - the right way and the broken way was Re: Need some advice
There are two ways to get the Windows 10 anniversary update. The first method is to wait for the update to be downloaded and installed by the Windows update utility. This is the recommended method because the other method is known to cause issues for screen reader users. Microsoft is now aware of the problem. My best advice is to just wait and the update will eventually be installed. Re: os for laptop
I was surprised I could find a windows seven computer, but I had to go to V Photo and Video to get one. The people at Best Buy sent me there. Back in the end of 2012, when I wanted to get a windows seven laptop for somebody for Christmas, all the stores I went to said they didn’t have them anymore. They told me, specifically the guy I remember at Wal-mart, said he had to send all the windows seven computers they had left back "last month", as he put it. Smiley. Agreed, as time moves by, we might see the Win7 machines still in stock, getting sold out. And yet, Some claimed a couple of years ago, that since Win8.1 had taken over for Win8, and was such a great system, we would no longer see Win7 systems for sale. Still, late as this very week, we do see Win7 brand new systems for sale. Hard to predict what will happen, so let's be realistic, instead of jumping to conclusions. A person who wants a Win7 machine, will have a chance of either run through the alternatives for local stores or certain netshops. Or, you may want to buy a one year old second-hander, and get a machine with much the same good specs as many of the brand new ones. Good news is, that the second-hand machines may likely save you enough money, that you right away can upgrade their hardware - RAM and SSD instead of the traditional harddisk. For many a user, an upgraded second-hand machine, with Win7 on it - might be a FAR MORE stabil and value-for-the-dollar product, than what a brand new Win10 with limited resources would be. The only major issue I was met with was WE for Office opening up in demo mode, making it necessary to revalidate my license, which now leaves me with only one more chance. As of this moment, nobody from AI Squared has responded in order to tell me if this behavior is normal. I had this happen back in April when I finally bit the bullet and took advantage of the free upgrade. Other than that, and my sound card's enhancements being turned back on, everything went off without a hitch. Everything is still working as it should. However, so many people, including me, are having this issue when atempting to install the anniversary update, and it shouldn't be that way. Microsoft is well aware that third party screenreader companies exist, but I think they were so excited about their updates to narator, that they completely forgot about the problems people may experience with other screenreaders like JAWS and Window-eyes. NVDA isn't included in this because it doesn't use any kind of a display driver, yet it gets the work done very well. New voice in Windows 10 Anniversary
Hi list: Well, I can't say a lot about the "new voices" in the Windows 10 anniversary update. Oddly enough, with Narrator and NVDA, the David voice seems more responsive when typing, whereas, with Window-Eyes and JAWS, the voice seems about the same, as far as typing echo goes. It might have something to do with the way individual characters are sent to the synthesizer for echoing. Anyone else do any trials with these "new" voices? RJ, Are you using the MCT? If so, you will need to remove the wineyes display driver and wineyes itself run the upgrade then reinstall your software and all will be well. Re: still no luck updating to Win 10 anniversary edition
I tried, even with the video drivers' from both jfw and window-eyes "neutralized" in device manager, using narrator and / or NVDA, but they had to be un-installed before I had any joy yesterday. MicroSoft is sloppy too since someone should have known about this, in fact staff at both VFO / AI-Squared should have known that windows' 7 updater as such from last year were using a version of the video drivers that, though they work fine with the earlier version of windows ten from last November, will not allow the install of the anniversary update. - Curtis Delzer, HS. Re: still no luck updating to Win 10 anniversary edition
Oh, OK, you found the point I missed, didn't you. :) I of course did mean the LIGHT version should be that light, that it did not hang on the same stuff as the full version. It should simply just be a way for the screen reader to creep out of a tight spot. In this particular case, the way I get it, the Display driver or something along that line, is the bottleneck. Maybe that is why NVDA does work, since it may not have such a display driver thing. Well, then, why not a light version of the heavy-pounder screen readers, which would kick into action, when the main core did not get through. Or, at least, the user would have a chance to start the light version. OK, I hear you all. Why invent the wheel all over. See that is not my point, to have such reinvention. But it does not help a less trained user, if he has to operate another screen reader, with all its differences in key-commands for controlling the operation. He wants to be able to operate the system he has learned through hard hours, and use the commands and controls he is used to. OK, none of the advanced features or loads of apps will be running. But if you start NVDA, and you simply want to read the Window title, don't be surprised that the Cttrl-Shift-T command will produce no result to you. You now will have to press something like Insert-T, which you are used to hit for having read the current time (in Window-Eyes). See how quickly a user would get lost? If he had a light version of WE, which would run the very basic screen reader functionality, without any super-advanced driver or bottom-software, he could continue to use the familiar keystrokes, till he had everything back in order, and could again be running full-sized. No, it is no big deal - for all of us who are doing this kind of multi-screen reader operation all the time; due to our expensive product not always working. And it is likely no big deal, for all those of us who has been behind assistive computers for several decades, and been using so many different pieces of software up through the years, that we simply just have come to a point of some mental multi-tasking, memorizing all kind of command keystrokes - past and present. Yet, I dare say, even among the list members, there likely would be quite a number of users, who will find it no less than confusing to have to operate several screen readers to get a job done. And what if you are trying to install, and speech disappear? How will you even be able to check the list archives for suggestions, that would tell you to download and install the NVDA screen reader, then to have to familirize yourself with the commands in that software. Remember, speech has disappeared, so how would a user do that? OK, tell all users to install NVDA, and at least get it set up for their likings, just in case they might need it some time down the road. That is what we - the more advanced ones do, ain't it. But then, why not have AISquared simply tell the user - as part of their initial installation process: "Our product may crash on you, through this installation, so would you please cancel and go get a freeware screen reader, which may help you out where we don't..." Sure; it is ironic; such an idea. But in reality, that is where the user end up anyway, the way things are today. Yes, WE and Jaws along with other big screen readers, they all are like jetplanes - compared to the slow-train of NVDA. But if they want to be jetplanes, then make sure the plane will be possible to fly, even should one or two engines fail. Don't expect every user on this globe, to automatically know, that if his paid-for product fails, then he can just jump the wagon of the free alternative. David On 8/4/2016 12:29 PM, Dave wrote: Yes David, I too find it quite ironic that I, at times, need to use NVDA in order to fix the High End Commershal one. But, getting to my real point, I think you have a great idea there. To have a Little Brother edition of Window Eyes, one to use when doing fixes, or Installs would be great. Of course, the reason why Big Brother does not work, may also keep the Little Brother from working, since they both are probably going to be using the same method to read the screen. NVDA seems to use some other method than JAWS or WE. I would probably use NVDA all the time, but I have found a couple of programs it won't read, and Win eyes will, so I stay with Win Eyes. Important: Anniversary Update advisory on display compatibility flag: Microsoft is aware of this issue #WinTen1607
I saw the following on another list: From: Joseph Lee Sent: Wednesday, August 3, 2016 9:37 PM To: blindt...@groups.io Subject: [BlindTech] Important: Anniversary Update advisory on display compatibility flag: Microsoft is aware of this issue #WinTen1607 Hi everyone, According to Kelly Ford (senior program manager at Microsoft), Microsoft is aware of the following issue: When you run Media Creation Tool (MCT) in order to upgrade to Anniversary Update, due to presence of some screen reader components (specifically, a display driver), MCT will raise display compatibility flag. This was observed on JAWS for Windows, Window-Eyes and Zoom Text. The workaround is to remove these display drivers and running MCT (end result not fully verified), or wait for Version 1607 to show up on Windows Update. Freedom Scientific was notified of this issue. Information in this advisory may change once updated information becomes available. Thank you. Just open the Window-Eyes control panel, Devices, Synthesizers. Tab once. If you're not on SAPI press S until you are. Tab again and select Microsoft David. Anniversary Update advisory: if using JAWS, wait until Version 1607 shows up on Windows Update #MSFTEnable #WinTen1607
I wonder if this would apply to those of you who are having problems upgrading? From: Joseph Lee Sent: Wednesday, August 3, 2016 12:20 PM To: blindt...@groups.io Subject: [BlindTech] Anniversary Update advisory: if using JAWS, wait until Version 1607 shows up on Windows Update #MSFTEnable #WinTen1607 Hi JAWS users, Comes from Twitter (from a reliable source) and was subsequently confirmed based on experience: If you are using JAWS for Windows and if you attempt to use Media Creation Tool (MCT) to upgrade to Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Version 1607/build 14393), you’ll be greeted with a message that says your display is incompatible. After some investigation, it was traced to FS mirror display driver, especially on systems that have upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. For members of the win10 group and its subgroups (termed group cluster): the following advisory is in effect: 1. Use JAWS 17.0.2619 or later. 2. Do NOT use Media Creation Tool at this time; wait for Version 1607 to show up on Windows Update (I was able to confirm this, as I have managed to upgrade to build 14393 with J17 installed and did it via Windows Update). If you have questions about this and other issues when upgrading to Anniversary Update, please contact Microsoft Accessibility Help Desk, mention @MSFTEnable or @FreedomSci on Twitter or contact Freedom Scientific (now part of Vision Freedom Optelec (VFO)). Re: Had to reactivate SNO after anniversary update
Rick, Let me reassure you by saying that your chances of having the driver issues are probably pretty small, especially if you just installed the latest upgrade. Mine just updated completely without assistance over night while I slept. I even put the 'puter to sleep, and it updated anyway, and besides my demo issue, and my sound card being reset to use enhancements, I had no other hitches. At least because of the state of my sound card, and the demo warning, I knew that something had happened . And yes, I do have a payed version of Elequence here as well. Re: still no luck updating to Win 10 anniversary edition
Michael, My sounds did indeed change. It became quite distorted. This also happened when I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10. My card is an on board Realtek sound card so all I had to do was go into the properties and tab to the enhancements and disable them, and now all is right with speech and WE. WE display and W10drivers
Hi, My system had a clean install of W10 64 bit in Maywith WE 9.3 being installed immediately after.WE 9.4 followed shortly after and now it has version 9.5. Apart from the current version of NVDA, there is no other speech or access programmes installed. My question is, is it the WE display driver installed prior to version 9.3 which is stopping the installation of the W10 update? In other words, having no WE version prior to WE 9.3, there should not be a problem updating my system when the time comes. Is this correct? Re: still no luck updating to Win 10 anniversary edition
well we have got one, it’s called NVDA, and it’s free, and after this sherade with the new windows update, i won’t be spending any more money on any of the screen readers, that you have to take a second mortgage for, that’s my 2 pence worth. Go pay a thousand dollars for a screen reader, and then you have to use a freeware one to get things installed. No, guys, this time I am not here to complain, simply just think it to be a smiler. One thing the makers of the paid-for screen readers now aday may want to consider, is if it would not have been an idea to have a somehow light version of the screen reader, that would kick in when installing things. Let us have all the jingles and bells, when we need it, but let us have a screen reader that helps us out when all we need is speech. To tell the user to go and get another screen reader, so as to have their paid-for product up running; well, to a less trained new user, may seem not just strange, but directly get them worried. Just thought to throw the idea on the board, even if we have had it there before. But relying on the amount of messages seen on the list the last few days, in this regard, tells me something might be wanted to be a bit more smooth running in the future. BTW, has NVDA been translated into all the languages supported by Jaws and Window-Eyes? Or, would we end up with a user in a foreign language, having to pay for his screen reader in his language, but use a non-translated version of NVDA for his installation tweaking? That at least, from many years of training non-English users, I could say would throw a multitude off the wagon.
