Hi Vaughn. Blindness organisations such as CNIB, rnib, etc had Window-Eyes
on their computers but they promoted JAWS above Window-Eyes because JAWS
brought them more profit.

I do not think Brian would have had anything to do with the demise of
Window-eyes.

There is no single reason for Window-eyes coming out of the active screen
reader market.

Contributing factors were: poor sales; Freedom Scientific market dominance;
growth in demand for NVDA - probably lots of other reasons as well.

I won't be buying Brian's tutorial, but he is very knowledgebable and will
have produced this to broadcast standard.

Vaughan.

Re: Raul, Carol is happily using the Caps-Lock key

2017-05-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos via Talk
Hello Brenda. I personally like using the laptop layout because I feel
like I get the best of both worlds this way. I can still use the
standard number pad hot keys to drive Jaws while having access to both
the caps lock key as my Jaws key and a whole set of hot keys which don't
require me to remove my fingers from the home row if I don't want to.
For example, while using the laptop layout, I can hold down the caps
lock key and press U, I, or O for prior, current, and next line, J, K,
and L for prior, current, and next word. I can do a whole lot more but
this is just one small example. Even though I use the laptop keyboard
layout, I still have access to the Insert key from the number pda, I.E.
the 0 key. I can do all the same functions from there as well. So, yes,
like I said, best of both worlds.

I hope this helps.

In order to use caps lock as the Jaws key do you have to turn laptop

Once laptop mode is on, can you still use the insert as the Jaws key and
the numpad for navigation?

If true, it seems like laptop mode is more versitile than desktop mode.

If not, what do I have to do to have the caps lock and insert key both
funcgtion as the Jaws key?

nothing when I press it and my letters do not speak with a higher

This is really strange! I went out of my email and when I
alt-tabbed, or at least that was what I meant to do, I hit the
alt-Caps-Lock combo accidently instead. Guess what! Alt-Caps-Lock
sets and says the state of the Caps-Lock. Go figure! So, is it
supposed to be alt-Caps-Lock, or is it supposed to be the Caps-Lock?
Pressing the Caps-Lock key now works just like the insert key used
to. I believe someone indicated there were times I should press it
twice, but I don't remember why. I just hope the setting stays

Some know of Jaws, but not much more than the name Jaws.

Hi there Don!

Was wondering if you might be able to provide me with step by step
instructions on how to set up filters using Thunderbird? I have tried

up as well as in several other folders. I guess I am asking is it
possible to filter my messages into just a single mailbox? You can
respond to me privately if you wish at wohlg...@gmail.com. Thanks Much! de

2017-05-30 Thread Chris G via Talk
If you are using imap you'll need to create the filters on the server
and not in Becky.
Becky doesn't run filters automatically on new imap messages, only pop.
You would need to run the filters manually.
The advantages of having the filters on the server is you create them
once and they work for every computer/phone/tablet you configure.

Re: is it possible?

2017-05-30 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
The main thing here is to make sure that both screen readers are not
opened at the same time, or at least, not while running on Win7. Every
time I started my PC with both programs installed to run from the
beginning, (not by personal default,) my ystem received a blue scree
failure. For me, the trick was to find out which one I could close
before the other started talking. Once I made the startup change, all
has been fine.

Yes, they both have their own peculiarities, so it becomes necessary for
me to close one and open the other for a specific task, so I am glad
they can both be on the system.

Hello Rod, this is normal behavior. One thing which I would suggest is
perhaps you copy the Jaws icon so you have your own. Then make the
shortcut to that one. This way if it's updated, you will still have your
original one with the Windows shortcut hot key. Of course, you could
simply go in and define the Windows shortcut once again, but at least
there are choices.

Thanks.

I really don't understand people's annoyance at having to purchase a
tutorial. There is free material already available, which they can use, but
why shouldn't someone be recompensed for their time and effort in
creating a
tutorial. When I purchased my Iphone, I didn't think twice about purchasing
Anna Dresner's tutorial and it was money really worth spending.

In the past I have used some of Brian Hartgen's tutorials and they were

There is free learning materials available for those who don't want to

Re: Announcement: Brian Hartgen Training Course, Over Easy:The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being Held Online6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern, 7pm UK Time

2017-05-30 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
I do not think Brian would have had anything to do with the demise of
Window-eyes.

There is no single reason for Window-eyes coming out of the active
screen reader market.

Contributing factors were: poor sales; Freedom Scientific market
dominance; growth in demand for NVDA - probably lots of other reasons as
well.

I won't be buying Brian's tutorial, but he is very knowledgebable and
will have produced this to broadcast standard.

I really don't understand people's annoyance at having to purchase a
tutorial. There is free material already available, which they can
use, but
why shouldn't someone be recompensed for their time and effort in
creating a
tutorial. When I purchased my Iphone, I didn't think twice about
purchasing

Anna Dresner's tutorial and it was money really worth spending.

In the past I have used some of Brian Hartgen's tutorials and they were
always of a high standard.

There is free learning materials available for those who don't want to
splash out extra money but they really can't expect people to
undertake such

a big piece of work and receive no reward.

2017-05-30 Thread Kevin Huber via Talk
Hi Jim:

That makes a lot of sense, but since not everything is contained in
one menu system like Window-eyes, one has to know which menu to find
things like changing whether you want the name of a key that you do
not want spoken, or controling the speed or volume of your
synthesizer. Of course, that wouldn't be too hard to learn. Having
said that, although am a window-eyes user, I still am quite familiar
with JAWS. I have to be, for my job as a trainer.

I really don't understand people's annoyance at having to purchase a
tutorial. There is free material already available, which they can use, but
why shouldn't someone be recompensed for their time and effort in creating a
tutorial. When I purchased my Iphone, I didn't think twice about purchasing
Anna Dresner's tutorial and it was money really worth spending.

In the past I have used some of Brian Hartgen's tutorials and they were
always of a high standard.

There is free learning materials available for those who don't want to
splash out extra money but they really can't expect people to undertake such
a big piece of work and receive no reward.

Re: Jaws hot key undefined after update

2017-05-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos via Talk

Thanks.

This happened to mine after the recent update.
It makes sense, of course, since I guess the icon got updated as well.
I'm just wondering if this happened to anyone else.

2017-05-30 Thread John Farley via Talk
Steve,

You are a business man running a company which happens to handle products
associated with blind access technology. That is how you make your living.

If a person wishes to make use of your services then it is incumbent on them
to pay whatever level of fee you and they agree is appropriate for that
service.

All other services are paid for, why not this one.
I always expected to get paid when I was working in IT, why shouldn't I.

What is special about it being a service for blind people; we are not that
different to the rest of the world, we just have less ability to see than
others.
Let a sighted person get driving lessons from a professional and see if they
can get that for nothing.

For both kinds of things you can also get a well-meaning friend to help you
out but that will not always be of the same level of competence.

Best of luck Steve.

Hi Tom,

Seems we're not allowed to make money. I offer the service for people who
want to get up and running quickly with their screen reader, without asking
endless questions.

Yes, of course it's all out there for free, but why not even unsubscribe
from this list and just use the inbuilt JAWS help? I think the more
services there are, the better, whether free or not.

All the best

Yes, ctrl, C will just copy, ctrl X will copy to clipboard and delete the

CTRL-X will delete that content. If you want to 'COPY' it without deleting
it, you should highlight it and then use CTRL-C for 'COPY' and then CTRL-V
to copy/paste the content, file, etc.

the file or files I want to move using the cursor keys. I then press
CONTROL+C to copy the material to the clipboard. I then move to the
directory in which I wish to place the file or files. I then paste them
there with CONTROL+V. Next, I go back to the directory where the original

is a way to actually move a file, but at least this way, I am assured that
my file is not lost or destroyed somewhere in the process. If worse comes to

Re: Announcement: Brian Hartgen Training Course, Over Easy:The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being HeldOnline6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern, 7pm UK Time

2017-05-30 Thread Tony C via Talk
Hi, Then thing I see is that while there are some differences in WE and
Jaws, the windows stuff is the same. There are some different keystrokes for
some things, but quite a few are the same. There's really not too much to
learn other than just remembering some new key combinations. Some of you are
acting like your having to learn some completely new out of this world
program. If some of you spent as much time learning the new key strokes as
you do complaining about people selling their help products, you would
already be and expert. Could we please quit cluttering up the list just to
bitch about stuff? I'm sure you can find list out there that are devoted to
whinners.

I agree. I think people areacting because they are mad about the fate of
Window-Eyes, not just the cost of the tutorial. Furthermore, we don't have
any proof that Mr. Hartgen had anything to do with the demise of
Window-Eyes. While I am not familiar with his tutorials, I have purchased
others in the past. I admit, some I have found very helpful and others not
so much. While I don't intend to purchase one at this time, I think the
tutorial should be evaluated on its own merits.

Hi,

I'm confused by this message. You can use the shifted arrows for selection
in JAWS, but not Window-Eyes. I don't like the Window-Eyes F8 method
personally. Not only that the Window-Eyes F8 method is inconsistent. It
works in IE, but not in Acrobat for example.

I tell you, the Window-Eyes method for copying text is less cumbersome.
Only three keystrokes to worry about: F8 to start, F8 to end, Alt-C to copy
to Clipboard.

For Jaws, Ctrl-Windows-K, then Insert-Space, then M, last, Ctrl-C to finally
copy to clipboard. I wonder why Jaws can't keep almost anything simple?

want to get up and running quickly with their screen reader, without asking
endless questions.

Yes, of course it's all out there for free, but why not even unsubscribe

Sorry, I disagree. Probably hours went into making sure it works as a
Window-Eyes user would want it to. Constructing the course, etc.

I don't see why people are not allowed to make a living.

I offer a similar service, but on a one to one basis, so if anyone is
interested, please contact me. Same price.

I do it differently though, I log into their computer, and take them round
the configuration and teach them how to change settings. With their
permission of course. But the freebie hunters won't be interested of
course.

All the best

Hi,

By the same token, because it is open source, it is the least secure in the
workplace. You will find many enterprises that won't trust NVDA
unfortunately.

It is a good screen reader though, not as configurable as JAWS, but not bad
at all.

Hi Ivan,
NVDA is the screen reader of the future, because everyone has access to its
code. It is called open source, because everyone can contribute to its code.
NVDA will not be bought, because we, the community own it LOL!.
To subscribe to the NVDA list, many experts on there:
nvda+subscr...@nvda.groups.io
You can download NVDA 2017.1, the latest version for free at:
www.nvaccess.org
You can also get tutorials off of there, and find out about many other
sources of tutorials that many people have done on using NVDA.
You would find that it is more like Window Eyes than JAWS is, and there are
a lot of great young users contributing to its code all of the time. It is
not owned by any company. NVAccess imploys just four people, and they are
just the cherity organization that keeps it altogether. Most of what happens
with NVDA is done by the blind all over the world.

Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being Held Online 6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern,
7pm UK Time

I'm not trying to KILL business for another blind entrepreneur; however, I
will say without mincing words that no one, especially those of us in the
United States and Canada, should ever pay a RED cent for this course!

For a start, my buddy and brother, Mr. Raul Gallegos, did record some
Jaws-related titbits for all to download and has never charged a cent for
it. Second, questions can be asked here or on some other mailing lists
frequented by the blind, and the good folks who are better gurus than I at
just about everything will STEP UP TO THE PLATE and lend a helping hand with
smiles.

Now, if the training has to do with WRITING JAWS SCRIPTS, I can understand
paying for that! In that instance, the recording should already be done, a
download link provided so I can pay for and grab it and work slowly on it
till I have learned enough to get stuff done.

No! No Window-Eyes user should be milked a penny more for transitioning to
Jaws! It's wrong in my books. I'll stay on this list for as long as is
possible; I'll do all I can to help folks with using Jaws; if I don't have
answers to particular questions, I'll go find them and come back here with
workable solutions and tips at NO cost! Even when I transition completely
to Android by September, I'll still be here to help folks who need help with
Jaws. Again, no Window-Eyes user MUST BE MILKED OUT of a cent for
transitioning!

Sincerely,
Olusegun

Hi Ivan,
NVDA is the screen reader of the future, because everyone has access to its

NVDA will not be bought, because we, the community own it LOL!.
To subscribe to the NVDA list, many experts on there:

You would find that it is more like Window Eyes than JAWS is, and there are

CTRL-X will delete that content. If you want to 'COPY' it without deleting
it, you should highlight it and then use CTRL-C for 'COPY' and then CTRL-V

the file or files I want to move using the cursor keys. I then press
CONTROL+C to copy the material to the clipboard. I then move to the
directory in which I wish to place the file or files. I then paste them
there with CONTROL+V. Next, I go back to the directory where the original
file is and delete it. This puts the file in the Recycle Bin. I know there
is a way to actually move a file, but at least this way, I am assured that
my file is not lost or destroyed somewhere in the process. If worse comes to
worse, I can restore the file from the recycle bin. Of course, when I am
totally satisfied, I empty the Recycle Bin. Note that these are all Windows

RE: is it possible?

2017-05-30 Thread Amanda Lee via Talk
Very true and have operated this way for years as I have used them for
testing for various purposes or at times, I've found one Screen Reader
provides a better interpretation of the content, the controls within an
application for navigational purposes and other aspects. I only recently
had issues with JAWS crashing after I unloaded Window-Eyes and JAWS blue
screened. There were updates for Framework which seemed to have resolved
this aftertheir installation. Still, this isn't related to both Screen
Readers being installed on the same computer at all.

OOne thing I learned just now is that I can use MicroSoft’s mobile voices with
NVDa. For example, none of the other screen-readers can use the new Mark voice
from MicroSoft because it’s a mobile voice. Someone wrote an NVDA add-on that
allows use the the Mobile SAPI voices. It’s a little sluggish intyping, but,
I’ve always wanted a way to use the Mark voice with something besides Narrator.

I'll have to agree here. Using JFW with Thunderbird is quite disappointing to
me. JFW can't give message counts or indexes in message folders. NVDA does
this very well. WE in my opinion works better with TB than JFW does except for
the fact that TB often crashes when using WE. For me the commercial screen
readers have problems with TB that NVDA overcomes. I'm glad I now have all
three screen readers to use since each of them has deficiencies for some
programs.

I am a long time user of JAWS. A lot could be done to improve its
usability.
Sadly, in recent times, the opposite is true. In many instances I find the
JAWS curser as a means of reading a screen just about useless. Instead, I
now invoke the touch curser which I find will get me to information not
available to either the PC curser or the JAWS curser. To enable the touch
curser, hold down the shift key and press the numpad plus key. You can then
move up and down through the information using the left and right arrow
keys, or if you prefer, by using the numpad keys four and six. To leave the
touch curser mode, simply press the numpad plus key twice quickly.
Hope this helps all you new JAWS users.
Martin

Hi,

A more robust way to run JAWS, if you know what version is on the machine is
to go to the Run menu, by pressing Windows+R, then type "jaws18" without the
quotes and press enter.

Change the number 18, to whatever major version it is.

I haven't used the Alt-Control-J shortcut for ages.

Re: Might be useful for new JAWS users

2017-05-30 Thread Kevin Huber via Talk
Hi Steve:

I didn't know about the touch cursor until a few days ago when I
listened to Jonathan Mozen's podcast where somebody described it. Up
until then, I would have avoided it, since I had assumed that it was
only for computers with touch screens.
I think that that might have been what they intended it to be in the
beginning, but it morphed into something more useful for all JAWS
users

Re: Announcement: Brian Hartgen Training Course, Over Easy:The Switch from window-Eyes to JAWS! Being Held Online6/1/17 at 2pm Eastern, 7pm UK Time

2017-05-30 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk

To fellow BECKY! users

2017-05-30 Thread Martha via Talk
Hi.

1. Has anyone tried using BECKY! with JFW yet? If so, how did it go?

2. Besides using nicknames in BECKY!, what are the steps and keystrokes
to select multiple recipients of a new composed message? I'm used to
Outlook Express where I could be in the address book, arrow to a name
and press alt and "the letter t" to add a name to the "To" line, alt and
"the letter c" to
add the selected name to the "CC:" line, or alt and the letter "b" to
add the selected name to the "BCC" line. Is there a BECKY! way to do
this?

Since this is not specific to Window-Eyes, please respond to me off-list

Thanks.

OK. The real truth is that we have been shafted by the company who made
JAWS, pluss the blind organizations. The true reason why organizations
favored JAWS above Window-Eyes was because it brought them more profit. The
venders who sold Window-Eyes, supernova etc. always put JAWS at the top of
their lists. Plus the venders deliberately lied about Window-Eyes too. As an
example, their was a girlfriend of a list member, named Carol who was on the
list, and one of her relatives was blind, and he used Window-Eyes so he
recommended it over JAWS. She got Window-Eyes no problems. Then, she went
and got a new computer and a new copy of Window-Eyes, and the assessor that
she met told her that Window-Eyes was going bust and that there was no point
in going with it. This guy worked at the blind school in Brantford, Ontario.
Carol told him that she was under no circumstances taking JAWS and that she
had a Window-Eyes expert as a boyfriend and she eventually got Window-Eyes
with two SMA's. Also, venders for the blind would also lie about the free
version of Window-Eyes for office. They would say things like the free
version doesn't work with office, it only works as a demo, it only lasts 6
months, it only lasts for 90 days, etc. These were regular lies told by the
venders. It was the profit factor, not the product. The venders favored JAWS
because it brought them more profit. That is the true story of why
Window-Eyes never made it up to the top.

Let's hear it, why is that?
And I just had a funny thing happen with JAWS, I did the hole control+y to
go to a folder in outlook, and I selected my inbox. It told me -2 of 1014

Sincerely,
Olusegun

the file or files I want to move using the cursor keys.

I'm not trying to KILL business for another blind entrepreneur; however, I
will say without mincing words that no one, especially those of us in the
United States and Canada, should ever pay a RED cent for this course!

For a start, my buddy and brother, Mr. Raul Gallegos, did record some
Jaws-related titbits for all to download and has never charged a cent for
it. Second, questions can be asked here or on some other mailing lists
frequented by the blind, and the good folks who are better gurus than I at
just about everything will STEP UP TO THE PLATE and lend a helping hand
with smiles.

Now, if the training has to do with WRITING JAWS SCRIPTS, I can understand
paying for that! In that instance, the recording should already be done,
a download link provided so I can pay for and grab it and work slowly on
it till I have learned enough to get stuff done.

No! No Window-Eyes user should be milked a penny more for transitioning
to Jaws! It's wrong in my books. I'll stay on this list for as long as
is possible; I'll do all I can to help folks with using Jaws; if I don't
have answers to particular questions, I'll go find them and come back here
with workable solutions and tips at NO cost! Even when I transition
completely to Android by September, I'll still be here to help folks who
need help with Jaws. Again, no Window-Eyes user MUST BE MILKED OUT of a
cent for transitioning!

Sincerely,
Olusegun

RE: Jaws and copy text question

Hello List,

I turn Window-eyes on manually. Yesterday after my computer almost died due
to multiple and random power surges, I got the Window-eyes End of Life
Notification. Really depressing. I wish they had just said window-eyes
Discontinuation Notice - it would have been less ominous.

Fortunately, my husband revived my Window7 machine and Window-eyes still
works. I need to use Jaws more often so I can learn it, but I just can't
bring myself to do so when Window-Eyes works with programs like Vipre and
Jaws doesn't. Also, Window-Eyes has a setting which makes it work in safe
mode and Jaws doesn't.

Hi ,
I wondered if anyone can answer a question for me.

I have my jaws authorisation code, but do not really, as yet, want to
install jaws.
Will this authorisation code work whenever I use it? in other words, after
the 31 july when the offer of free transfer expires?

I guess what I want to know is, if I install Jaws on say the 1st of
september this year, will the authorisation ccode still work
regardless. I would imagine so, but just wanted to msound out about
it, to put my mind at rest.
thanks and sorry if this is a silly question.

I am a long time user of JAWS. A lot could be done to improve its usability.
Martin

I really don't understand people's annoyance at having to purchase a
tutorial. There is free material already available, which they can use, but
why shouldn't someone be recompensed for their time and effort in creating a
tutorial. When I purchased my Iphone, I didn't think twice about purchasing
Anna Dresner's tutorial and it was money really worth spending.

In the past I have used some of Brian Hartgen's tutorials and they were
always of a high standard.

There is free learning materials available for those who don't want to
splash out extra money but they really can't expect people to undertake such
a big piece of work and receive no reward.

My paths haven't crossed with Brian Hartgen for many years but when I was
relatively new to computers, his tutorials were really helpful, especially
as at that time, he was a Window-eyes user himself. He is very
knowledgeable, talks in a non-technical way and makes learning easy. Will I
buy his tutorial? Well, I'll see how I get on with what's already available
first. I do have several friends who are Jaws users so might keep my money
in my pocket for the time being - smile!
