Hi,

My brother needs to convert his ring tones from mp3 to m4b. Is there an
easy and screen reader friendly way to do this? Thanks.

RE: Win 10 And WE 9.5.4

Since we are on this general subject, which web browsers work with Window-Eyes
9.5.4? It is my understanding that Firefox doesn't work with it. Does it work
with the new Chromium Edge, Google Chrome, Brave, etc.?

Hi Tom,

At one time, there were a few apps which needed to be either disabled or
uninstalled in order for Window-Eyes to work in Windows 10.
On my current system, which runs the latest version of Windows 10, this is no
longer true.
Without exception, every default Window-Eyes app is running here.
A few months back, someone had written to this list with the news that they had
even gotten an app update from the Window-Eyes server.
No doubt, this was because they had an outdated app, but I recall being very
surprised to hear that app updates where available from the old Window-Eyes
server.
I know for certain that there was a time when the Window-Eyes app update server
was not active.
My guess is that there is some guardian angel or angels keeping Window-Eyes
working for the many people throughout the world who need it.
I am one of those who need it.
I have yet to find any other screen reader which allows me to manage the
connection and disconnection of attached devices between the host and virtual
machines on the current version of VMWare Workstation.
Indeed, this is very surprising to me, that is, that I cannot get Jaws or NVDA
or Narrator to focus those device icons, but the truth is before me, and so I
am saved by Window-Eyes.
Also, I have yet to find a screen reader which is as perky reading email in
Outlook which is part of Microsoft 365.
Microsoft 365 is the new name of Office 365, the subscription-based Office
product.
The Office Enhance and Outlook Enhance Window-Eyes apps work perfectly to allow
me to read and write in Outlook.
So, Tom, I simply want to suggest that you don't give up on Window-Eyes.

Take good care,

Rod

did you try useing the emergency removal tool. this is an option from the w

say anything until the removal is complete. about 30 seconds.

some of this may just be cetting changes you need to make. my mouse still
speaks when moved over the text. so does the arrow keys. this is a desktop

win10 and 7.
the mouse usually will not speak things like dialog boxes or pop up messages
in firefox.
it was doing this with win7 but win10 is worse.
***
look in the mouse settings turn off interuptability in voice set it to
instent this may be set to echo nothing.
and when mouse passes over a word this can be set to speak word or line
etc.
i haven't found the option to make the arrow keys speak text on the screen

I just got brave and did it. JAWS came right up. I exited JAWS and tried

backup outlook .pst file is on my data drive. Oh yes, my printer still
works, too. Fortunately, I didn't need to worry about anything. Thanks

Hi Tom,

Could you please clarify which installation files are on the data drive?
Will Windows 10 be installed on the SSD?
If so, your data drive will be quite safe.

When I did that a year or so ago and left window-eyes installed, the machine
locked up. I was on line with microsoft and their oly solution was to
completelly blow it away and start over so I lost all of my files and
settings. If you do hleave window-eyes on the machine, set it not to run at

When I did that a year or so ago and left window-eyes installed, the machine
locked up. I was on line with microsoft and their oly solution was to
completelly blow it away and start over so I lost all of my files and
settings. If you do hleave window-eyes on the machine, set it not to run at
boot up.

Hi Bernie,

Having checked my system, I have an Apps menu choice named Diagnostics which is
also the name of the associated Window-Eyes app.
The version I have is 1.2.7.
My installation package of WE 9.5.4 retail included this app.
Perhaps someone on this list has the separate app and can make it available for
you on DropBox or simply email it to you.
The filename of the Diagnostics app is wediag.wepm.
I do have a separate copy of this app, but it is only version 1.2.5, and I
think you would be better with the most recent version.
However, if you would like it, I can put it in my DropBox.

All the best,

Rod

RE: Safe Mode

2019-05-18 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I have done this on a Windows 7 computer but not in Windows 10. I turn on my
computer and press F8 repeatedly. I hear a soft click when the hard drive
stops cranking. I know that I'm where I want to be. I press down arrow once
and press Enter. The menu contains several options including Repair and for
Safe Mode. After pressing the Enter key, I am in Safe Mode. I then press
Control+Alt+W and Window-Eyes comes on. HTH

Listers,

I could use some feedback here, please.

Got a program that needs to run in Safe Mode. Being an uninstaller, it
cannot be run in standard mode under Windows. When I try, it just tells me
to click Yes, and it will restart Windows in Safe Mode.

Sure, I clicked Yes, and the computer seemed to restart. At least I heard
the Windows closing sound, and the fan dropped in speed.

After a couple of minutes, nothing for a sound was heard.

Am I mistaken, or should it be possible to set up Window-Eyes to run
when Windows is in Safe Mode? Has anyone any experience on the matter?
And, could please someone give me some step-instructions how to do the job?

I sure tried to press the Alt-Ctrl-W combination, but nothing happened.
Apparently my WE is not properly set up for safe Mode, or something else
failed.

For your info, am running Win7Pro 64Bit, and latest version of WE.

If not WE can be used in Safe Mode, does anyone know if NVDA, or Jaws 18
could be an alternative?

Any feedback is warmly welcome. Thanks,

David

You don't have to be in the equalizer to use those panning keys. I just
checked. You can use them in the main window as well.

Donald,

I think you misremembered the command. The command, or key combo is
alt+shift+k.

In order to pan from left to right, at least as far as I know, is to go
to the equalizer using alt+g, then using your left and right arrow keys.
That always works for me

Re: Has anyone ever considered using the Apple Mac?

2018-05-25 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I echo many of the points made in other E-mails. I have a Windows Computer
and N IPhone. I find I can do things on my PC that i can't do on the phone
vice versa. Of course, I had to learn a new set of commands and jestures. I
echo the thought that just because Apple has VoiceOver that not all web
environments are accessible. For example, I love my church, but its web site
is not the greatest. I would give it a C grade. It is no better with
VoiceOver. Developers do not need to adhere to the Apple standard. I have
heard from others that Android is not a cakewalk either.Again, one would
need to learn a whole new set of commands and jestures. Again, the Android
user is at the mercy of the app developers and the accessibility folks. As
one lister indicated, it depends upon your needs and desires. Do some good
research and give it good thought.

Guess you are not lonely on the isle of wishing for more stability, like
in the older days, when comes to electronics. As a matter of fact, many
sighted people feel the same way. All the continious updates to Windows
and software, do affect EVERYONE - not only visually impaired.

As for Apple products, I have never even tried them, so cannot advice
anything on that field. Still, you will want to go through your actual
needs. For my part, one reason why I have never bothered the Apple
products, is that certain of the software I am relying on, only runs
under Windows. Getting a Mac would mean for me to stop using such
software, and the disadvantage thereof seems higher than the gains of a
bit more stability on the computer. Sure, I do know there exists ways of
running a Mac with Windows, but you then still will have to face the
many updates, I guess.

Further, be aware that not all Windows periphals might have drivers for
Mac. Such as your printer. Though Apple might have 24/7 assistance -
over the phone or whatever - you will have to rely on it. A Windows
machine is similar to what your friends and colleagues run, and getting
help with things directly on-site, might prove easier. All depend on
your situation, and your location. If for instance you lived in a place
with no Apple store, and you had to pay for transportation every time
you had to take your device to the store, so as to benefit from the
special service you described, it could soon enough prove to be a
troublesome solution; even if the assistance itself would claim to be
free-of-charge. Compare it with having someone over for a cup of coffee
and let them fix your issue. Again, it depend on what situation you are
in. What need you have for assistance, what software you plan on using,
and what other equipment you already have that might or moight not be
compatible.

Keep in mind, that even Apple products receive updates. Probably not
that often, and perhaps not all that overturning in new layouts and so
forth. But Apple land likely have its own challenges. Sure, they have a
number of voices included in their products. But do these voices fit
you? What about special terms, linked to your profession - will they be
able to pronounce them correctly? Or, will they have optimal
pronunciation dictionary capabilities, enough for you to taylor them to
a bearable level? Otherwise a day in office might prove to be a true
nightmare, sitting there listening to extremely badly pronounced special
terms. I do have one locale voice on my computer here, manufactured by
Vocalizer. It sounds very nice, clear and OK natural. Yet no matter how
hard I try - with whichever screen reader or dictionary - it simply
cannot be made to pronounce certain words correctly. And believe me, it
becomes a real stressful experience over time. It even sometimes
pronounce things such badly, that it causes misunderstandings. Since I
have never used an Apple product, I could not tell what is the case on
their screen reader voices. But you might want to do some research, as
to what voices might be available, even for later purchase and installing.

Many have chosen to use software that no longer is installed all on your
local computer, but rather based on Online services. In some cases that
might solve part of your learning curve, since they might be similarly
working, whether you use Linux, Windows, Apple, or even Android based
equipment. That is what we name cross-platform services. Yet, other
software, even if they run off the net, might be quite different, from
one platform to the other.

One thing to keep in mind, is that the cross-platform services, will be
updated just as often for all platforms. Let's take a thing like Firefox
(and I just picked it out of the air, purely for samplification). If
they decide to update, they will update the cross-platform software.
This means, whether you run Mac, Android or Windows, you still will have
to

Hi Anthony,
I don't use Outlook. But I just looked at the keyboard shortcuts page for
Outlook because I thought perhaps Control+Shift+B was in the Window-Eyes
scripts.
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/keyboard-shortcuts-for-outlook-3cde
b221-7ae5-4c1d-8c1d-9e63216c1efd
But Control+Shift+B is the native Outlook shortcut for the address book.
I then loaded NVDA because I still use Window-Eyes. I pressed NVDA+1 for key
describer mode. And Control+Shift+B is not a NVDA key combination.
So you should be able to just press it without pressing the bypass
combination first.

Tom

Finally, every time I press a right or left arrow, it does what it

1. On the Options menu, choose Control Properties.
2. Choose the Visual tab using Control-tab, or by tabbing to the tab

3. In each combo box which contains an option named "blank", set it to

4. Choose the Ok button and you're finished.

download and install of creator was taking place when I got a message saying
WE 9.1 and 9.2 had to be removed from the computer before creator could
install.

This makes no sense at all because in the add remove programs WE 9.5.4 is
the only WE program on this computer. WE was installed from a disc so I am
at my wits end on how to get creator downloaded and installed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I am tired of getting messages
constantly saying windows creator can not be installed and to click this
link to fix the issue. Yes, this has been done several times but constantly
get the message about older versions of WE.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Hi Tom,

I don't know if this will help, but try the following:

Open Windows Explorer
Go to tools, folder options
shift tab to general and right arrow to view
tab until you get to advanced
Press the letter u to check or unckeck
selected items. You want this off.
tab to the ok button and press enter.

This should take away your checkboxes for selected items.

Hi Tom,

You might try pressing the shift key with the context key to bring up
more options. They, see if you can find something like explore files or
possibly press enter on the open link. If the cd you are trying to open
is an audio cd, you will only see .cda files, and they will not tell you
much at all.

The easiest way I have found is to press F12. After it is pressed, you will
be placed in a dialog with a suggested file name. You can edit this to your
liking. Press Shift+Tab, and you should be in a list of folders. Arrow to
the one you desire and press
Enter. Tab till you reach the file name and press Enter. Your file
should be saved in the desired folder. Note that you should be le to
navigate between folders and/or other locations on your computer in Windows

Alison, the read to end command, or say all, is insert-down arrow. This can
be either the down arrow of the T-arrow keys or the 2 on your numpad.
The read current line is the insert key and the up arrow, again, either the
up arrow of the T arrow keys or the 8 on your numpad.
Here's the link to the premium voices
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/Synthesizers
You should have been able to set verbosity level in the startup wizard, if I
remember correctly But you can get it in several other ways.
Press insert-v to bring up the quick settings menu. Arrow down to User
verbosity Or type Verbosity in the search edit box. The default is
beginner. Press the spacebar to cycle through the choices.
If you press tab, JAWS will say:
This option controls the Verbosity, or amount of information, spoken by
JAWS.
The level settings are Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
To customize what JAWS speaks for each level, see the Verbosity Options
dialog in Settings Center. The default setting is Beginner.
Tab to ok and press enter.
There are other things in that list, such as punctuation you can change too.
Check out the training materials in the JAWS help menu.

Yes. I got a couple stands. One is a little tripod with a spring loaded
slide clamp to hold the phone. The other is a laminated cardboard box
that was originally designed for folks needing to scan documents while
traveling on business. It folds up flat and when you expand it magnets
hold it together. So you sit the phone on top with the camera looking
through a peep whole and put what you want to scan in the box. There's
two models. One with a little set of LED lights inside and the other
without. It can use a battery or AC power. And it wasn't expensive. 29
or 39 bucks. something like that.
I can't remember the name of it. But I'll look around to see if I kept
any notes on it.
I don't use either much because I don't have the need to scan books or
long documents. But they work good.

Tom

Actually I seldom use the field of view report. It was fine when I first

for critical reading where I need the absolute best. In that situation I

Ok here is how you use knfb reader this is just an example.
Imagine you are a student in college. You have some paper handouts that

So how do you read it? First you unlock your android phone or your
iPhone. Then you go into the knnfb reader app. And then you hold the
phone a foot above the page. And then you press the field of view report
button first making sure you are pointing the camera on the bottom of the
phone down towards the page. Then you hit field of view report button you
double tap it on the phone’s touch screen. You hear your phone say
outloud with its screen reader:

All four corners of the page are visible.

Then holding the phone as steady as you can, you double tap the take
picture button. The phone snaps a photo of the page, does OCR on the
text, and reads the text out loud to you. And you can scan whole entire
books very very fast with just the 8mp camera on your smartphone.

file for details. Email: tom.kings...@charter.net Windows has an
internal setting that tells it if a screen reader is running. Our
screen readers turn this on when we load them and off when we close
them. Windows uses it to make some changes that help our screen
readers work better. It is also available for other programs to check
when they launch and make themselves more accessible as well. The
problem comes into play when something goes wrong with our screen
reader, such as it stops talking but it’s not actually hung or
crashed, which is the case for me when Internet Explorer throws an
error. In my case I’m running Window-Eyes. So I load NVDA to see
what’s going on. Sometimes this alone reopens the flow of speech
from Window-Eyes. If not closing the error message with NVDA always
brings Window-Eyes back to life. My understanding is that the same
thing happens with JAWS. Next I unload NVDA and continue on my merry
way. But closing NVDA turns off the screen reader setting in Windows
even though I’m still running a screen reader. This is not the fault
of NVDA or exclusive to it. Any screen reader will do the same. This
is where this program comes into play. In order to turn the screen
reader setting back on we would have to unload our screen reader and
reload it. And in order to do that and insure the best result we would
have to close all open programs, close our screen reader, reload it,
and then reopen those programs and do whatever is necessary, e.g. load
files, to get back to work. This is because our screen readers need to
see some programs load in order to configure themselves to work
correctly with those programs. The Screen Reader Check program allows
you to reset the screen reader setting without having to close and
reopen your programs and screen reader. You can run this program and
it will first check to see if the screen reader setting is on or off.
If it’s on the program will simply notify you of this and close when
you press the Ok button. If not it will attempt to turn the screen
reader setting back on and then broadcast a system message to tell all
open windows that a screen reader is running. It will then notify you
that this was done and close when you press the Ok button. The
ScreenReaderCheck.zip file will extract a ScreenReaderCheck folder.
That folder includes License.txt, ReadMe.txt (this file), and SRC.exe.
Simply unzip it into a folder of your choice. You may then wish to
place SRC.exe in a more convenient place for quicker access. I gave
the program a short name to make it easy to run from the run dialog.
Just press Windows+R and enter drive:\path\src.exe. for example, if
you place it in the root of your C-drive you would just enter
C:\SRC.exe. You may also wish to open the context menu (Application
key or Shift+F10) on SRC.exe in the folder you extracted it to and use
“Send to” to send a shortcut to your desktop. Within the
properties of that shortcut file, accessed through the context menu or
Alt-Enter, you can assign a shortcut hot key to it. If you have any
comments or inquiries please email me at tom.kings...@charter.net
Below is a link to the ScreenReaderCheck.zip file. After downloading
the file select it, open the context menu, P Properties, tab to the
Unblock check box and check it. This will prevent you from having to
go through the Windows security dialog in order to run SRC.exe.

Hi Russ and all,

As memory serves, you do have to enter the correct name when you install
Window-Eyes.
Regardless whether I'm right about that point, as much as this thread seems
to entertain the idea of sharing retail copies of Window-Eyes, I think
you'll run into copyright infringement if you do this.

Only sort of. The serial number is assigned to a specific person, so
the name and any other information that is asked for during installation
would need to be the same for both people. So, if you gave me your copy
and did not tell me your information, your copy, on my PC would still be

these usually can be reapplied easily since Windows or your security program
will likely prompt you to reinstall them after the System Restore is

First, when I use the say-all command on the weatherunderground web page, it
reads for a while then stops, and I have to restart Jaws.

The second thing is that Jaws isn't keeping my changes to my voice profile
for the DECtalk USB.

Has anybody encountered these problems and if so, what did you do to solve
them.

Thanks,

Pastor Gil

Try hitting Alt-V and then the letter O. You should be able to make
additional changes there. I do this for Windows 7.

Thanks for your reply. I had already tried to do what you suggested but I
found that I couldn't check or uncheck any of the menu items. By the way,
the "None" item was already checked as well as the "Date Created" and the

Hi, Peter.

It sounds like your user folders are grouped by date. While in that folder
view, press Alt-V for view and down arrow to the group by menu option. Press
enter and a sub menu should open, giving you options like name, date, size,
and maybe some other options. I'll bet the date option is checked. All you
have to do is keep down arrowing to the none option and press Enter.

That should straighten things out.

Hello List,

I tried to send this message to the list but it didn't appear to have
reached it so I am sending it again.

I would like some help from anyone who is still using Windows 8.1 and
Window-Eyes.
I was fooling around in one of my folders in my User folder and somehow I

changed the way the subfolders are readout by my Window-Eyes 9.5.4. I have

managed to get the supfolders back into list view as I like it but now

Window-Eyes reads extraneous info such as "earlier this year" or "Last

week". How do I stop W-E from reading that info?

I am using Windows 8.1 with the free version of W-E.

 Help would be much appreciated.

Okay, they didn't put a gun to our heads. They just spat in our faces and
said that Window-Eyes wouldn't be developed or sold any more. What is that
supposed to mean? It means that eventually, we will need to look for another
screen reader. Thankfully, we have some time to figure things out. I will
keep Window-Eyes until it works no more. I will also continue to learn about
JAWS. I will certainly have questions, and I appreciate everyone's help.
Yes, I have NVDA on my computer, too, and it will stay there.

However, I have found 3 that will probably give you the information you

2017-05-30 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I agree. I think people areacting because they are mad about the fate of
Window-Eyes, not just the cost of the tutorial. Furthermore, we don't have
any proof that Mr. Hartgen had anything to do with the demise of
Window-Eyes. While I am not familiar with his tutorials, I have purchased
others in the past. I admit, some I have found very helpful and others not
so much. While I don't intend to purchase one at this time, I think the
tutorial should be evaluated on its own merits.

I really don't understand people's annoyance at having to purchase a
tutorial. There is free material already available, which they can use, but
why shouldn't someone be recompensed for their time and effort in creating a
tutorial. When I purchased my Iphone, I didn't think twice about purchasing
Anna Dresner's tutorial and it was money really worth spending.

In the past I have used some of Brian Hartgen's tutorials and they were
always of a high standard.

There is free learning materials available for those who don't want to
splash out extra money but they really can't expect people to undertake such
a big piece of work and receive no reward.

Re: how do you move a file with w/e

2017-05-29 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I have never actualy tried to move a file. What I do is this. I highlight
the file or files I want to move using the cursor keys. I then press
CONTROL+C to copy the material to the clipboard. I then move to the
directory in which I wish to place the file or files. I then paste them
there with CONTROL+V. Next, I go back to the directory where the original
file is and delete it. This puts the file in the Recycle Bin. I know there
is a way to actually move a file, but at least this way, I am assured that
my file is not lost or destroyed somewhere in the process. If worse comes to
worse, I can restore the file from the recycle bin. Of course, when I am
totally satisfied, I empty the Recycle Bin. Note that these are all Windows
keystroke that should work with any screen reader.

Selecting E-mail Recipients

2017-05-27 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I won’t write about this any more because I’m as tired of writing about it as
you are of hearing about it. I have the latest version of Window Eyes, the
latest version of NVDA, and the latest version of JAWS on my Windows 7 64-bit
Pro computer. Selecting E-mail recipients by typing in the To field works
perfectly for me in Window-Eyes.In JAWS, nothing is spoken, and no suggestions
appear. The Read Current Line and arrow keys only read my typed text. When I
tab out and back into the field, only my typed text appears. In NVDA, likewise,
when I start typing in the To field, I can only read my typed text. If I arrow
down or up, I still only hear my typed text. However, if I tab out and then
back into the field, I hear the first suggestion spoken. If I were to type some
letters and arrow down twice and then tab out and back, I would hear the third
suggestion in the To field. These results would be expected. Thus, the
suggestion information is populating properly, but NVDA won’t read it. Strange
indeed.

Re: JAWS Software Synthesizer Volume

2017-05-23 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
It is good that one can do this, but it's sad that JAWS, the program said to
be the anointed screen reader for all time, does not provide a way to adjust
the synthesizer volume. On another note, it seems that help with nmouse
movement and adjusting how many pixels the mouse moves with each key press
is difficult to find. Yet, since I really don't worry too muich about either
of these, I enjoy those things about Window-Eyes. Nontheless, I am learning
my way around JAWS and getting along well. As has been stated in previous
posts, there are merits and pitfalls with all screen readers.

Hi,

But you can, in Windows 10, adjust the volume of JAWS as a whole.

Go to System Tray, find your sound card and right click or press
applications key, then Open Volume Mixer. Now you will see a volume
specifically for JAWS. If you turn that down, it will turn Eloquence down.

All the best

This is only true with Eloquence.

If you are using Vocalizer or SAPI speech, you can adjust volume of the
speech.

To do this, press Insert-j for the JAWS window. In the options menu, select
Voices. Under that, select Voice Adjustment. You’ll be asked to select a
default voice profile. Once you select Sapi or Vocalizer profile, you will
find that there is now a control you can tab to in order to set the speech
volume.

Hope this helps.

I think that the Word Nav app was inspired by a feature that was already in

Note that you may have to install a previous version such as 9.0.0 before

Subject: 9.5.4 very unstable on my HP desktop

I am writing to inquire whether other list members have observed
significant instability with Window-Eyes 9.5.4 especially on web pages.
I have an HP desktop running Windows 10 Creator edition. This
instability was also present with previous windows versions,
specifically 8.1 and Windows 10 anniversary and also 1507. So it may
well be something unique to this machine.

It is almost the norm rather than the exception that Window-eyes will
crash whenever I launch a web page or search for something on a page,
such that I will then have to restart using alt control w. I often have
to launch Jaws 16 to get the job done. Today, for example I went to
wal-mart.com to search for an RCA Galileo Pro. The main Wal-mart page
loaded without incident, and I got to the search box without
difficulty. But as soon as I hit control shift f and typed RCA Galileo
Pro and hit enter, Window-eyes crashed.

Are any of you listers experiencing anything comparable?

Thanks.

Graphic Labeling and the Mouse

find a stop button. I didn’t remember Window-Eyes not reading it before. When
moving around the screen by clip, I found a couple of buttons that just said
“graphic.” When I clicked on them, the labels were identified as “pause” and
“stop.”Of course, they only appear while the recording process is active. I
don’t recall this behavior occuring previously. Must I label these graphics?
Incidentally, the Autolabel Graphic feature didn’t change anything. Iam using

I have seen this cause focus issues...perhaps Whatever antivirus your

Bob,

I haven't looked at WLM in a few years, so I'm going from memory. From the
inbox, press Alt-F, T to open the WLM options. Next, go to the Mail tab, and
look for an option that says something to the effect of, "show an envelope
icon when new mail arrives." Uncheck it, hit Enter to accept the change, and
you should be all set.

If that doesn't work or you can't locate the option, I recommend pingging
the Microsoft Disability Answer Desk for help. They can be reached at (800)

Hope this helps.

Hope no one minds if I chime in here. If you have 4 gb of RAM, my
opinion is that Win7is the way to go. Win10 in my experience is a bit
more memory intensive and therefore a bit slower than 7 with 4 gb of
RAM. I've put my money where my mouth is on this one as I just ordered a
RAM upgrade for my Win10 computer from 4 GB to its max of 8. I have that
much confidence that it will make the difference that I spent the money
on a new RAM chip and will even have to pay someone to put it in as it's
an Asus laptop, which are notorious for being difficult to service as an
end user due to difficult designs for replacing hardware. That being
said, I do like the new features of Win10 a lot. It's a stable OS too,
at least as stable as 7.

Subject: The Phasing Out of Window-Eyes

Hello John,

I have been drafting a letter to VFO because, as you know, there is
speculation that Window-Eyes is going to be phased out. If it is, I am
not switching to Jaws, because I won't be able to afford it, amongst
other reasons. However, in my letter, I have pointed out that if
Window-Eyes goes, it provides a significant problem for blind people
wanting to get into work, as not everyone has an access to work fund.
Moreover, one of the few ways we can work, especially for younger
people, is volunteering, and there, we may be in a crisis, as IT
technicians are paranoid about NVDA, since it is open source, and they
think it could contain a virus or compromise security in another way.
We would be in limbo, as they won't want NVDA, and they won't pay for
Jaws, as Access to Work won't pay for equipment for unpaid work, so you
would have to buy a license for every computer you use out of your own
pocket. What do you think? Also, I have heard that they are developing
both Magic and ZoomText. How come they are doing that, but phasing out
Window-Eyes? To me, this is a case of double standards.

Samuel Wilkins

It appears that the only way I may be able to attempt to read a Kindle book I
purchased is to download it ontomy PC and try working with a program such as
Codex. Thus, I really need the PC app to work for me. One lister gave me
instructions on how to register my PC with the Kindle site. It appears to have
been done. However, I’m back to figuring out how to actually select and
download a book. Has anyone done this recently—not several years ago, not 1 or
2 years ago, but with the latest Window-Eyes, IE 11, and Windows 7 64-bit Pro.
Detailed instructions, please? Yes, I have done some crost-posting about this,
hoping for an answer. Sorry for the rant.

Re: here's how to disable plug ins in firefox

2016-10-03 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
Thanks for all the help. I was able to disable the plugin in Firefox and IE.
I have discovered that a site I use in IE requires it, so I will disable and
reenable as needed.

AVG

2016-09-27 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I was not really satisfied with Eset Smart Security, so when my subscription
ran out, I tried AVG. In that whole process, I found out how difficult it was
to remove Eset from my computer. Nonetheless, I was able to do so. I used
Ninite to install the free version of AVG. The protection interface seems
fairly easy to use. The Ninite installer did not have the imfamous worthless
Zen screen. However, from time to time, I get a message informing me that AVG
wants to do a web tune-up. It wants to change my IE security settings, my home
page to Chrome, my search engine to Bing, and my default browser to Chrome.
Sometimes, this dialog comes up in a worthless custom control. Sometimes, it
comes up in HTML format. I don’t want to change my home page or my search
provider. In the process, I am also asked to click on Extentions, but I have no
way of doing so. The changes made to Internet Explorer 11 cause web pages to
load more slowly or hang. I have reset my IE settings twice. How do you make
this dialog work better for you and keep it from coming up? I am using Windows
7 64-Bit Pro and IE 11.
