TB! supports TLS. SSL is for use with HTTP, i.e. secure Web pages. TLS
grew out of SSL.

You are using Gmail with TB!. Therefore, you have already established
a TLS connection. Look in Account Properties | Transport | Connection.

BTW, you have inadvertently broken a couple of mailing list rules: no
signature delimiter and starting a new thread by replying to another

How do I do this? My address book has a Certum CA Directory,
Netcenter Member Directory, and Verisign, although I don't know
what any of them mean and there's no info in the help file on them
(I thought they had to do with LDAP for some reason, but don't know
 why I thought that now).

You should also see two red icons for Intermediate CA and Trusted
CA in your address book...

Right-clicking gives me a menu where I can add new contacts or
groups, but neither of those seem appropriate as I just want to add
a certificate that says, when you get this domainx certificate,
it's ok if you're connecting to domainy.

However, whilst trying to replicate your issue (since my certificate
now matches the server name) I have experienced problems and cannot
get it to work permanently. Importing the certificate into the trusted
CA doesn't prevent the server hostname/certificate mismatch. Yet I do
recall having this working in the past.

Roelof says in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] that this isn't
possible. If so, I must have had a work-around. Yet the only thing I
can come up with is that I used the server IP and this matched the
dummy certificate first used by my server. However, I'm sure it used
something like localhost.localdomain and not the IP address, which
rules out that idea...

Anyway, what I suggest is you try this: you import the certificate
into you trusted CA and then change your mail settings to the server
listed in the certificate not pop.fancy.org (your MX record points to
mx.futurequest.net.) It may not be your domain name but that shouldn't
be important since your hosting company supports multiple domains on
its server(s.) It's your login that matters. Whilst I tested this
approach with one of my domains successfully it may not work for you.

Anyone else care to chip in?

If you open the Address Book, select Personal address book, and
Properties (Alt+Enter) what is the file location? Is it something
similar to C:\Documents and Settings\your-account\Application
Data\The Bat!\TheBat.ABD or the location of the file listed above? If
it's the temporary folder you mention then the original file could
intact in its original location. Otherwise, you may be unfortunate and
it's been overwritten with the new one... although that seems
unlikely.

Does anyone know if this new upgrade even allows for a restore to a

addresses that I now seem to have lost.

Since you have no backup try System Restore as Mary suggests... TB!

 'draenor.its-toasted.org'.

You are assuming I am using TB or a plug in to do spam filtering.
Personally I do not even wish to download spams or viruses in the
first place which is why I have server side filtering via Spamcop
(which also includes Spam Assassin but I can not control their copy of
 course).

I use the following procmail rule to filter TBUDL, TBBETA etc.

# ---
# Mailman and other intelligent software lists
# (e.g. List-Post: mailto:tbbeta@thebat.dutaint.com)
#
:0
* ^List-Post: \mailto:\/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
| ${FORMAIL} -a X-Folder: $MATCH mail/Lists/$MATCH

To date, I have never had spam end up in my TB! folders. However, I
have had SpamAssassin incorrectly classify a couple of genuine
messages but these get to the correct folder using the above rule... I
tend to test for lists before generic spam (other than fake messages,
mailing lists etc.)

The use of subject tags is therefore redundant even though many lists
to which I subscribe use them.

Yes, very similar. Memory usage was around 150M after twenty hours
or so. After a restart it's back to 30M. I'm using a single IMAP
 account and the Avast plug-in.

I've been monitoring this over the past couple of days and reckon it's
linked to browsing messages. I'm certainly confident it's not caused
by receiving messages; an increase in memory usage only occurs if I'm
actively using TB!, i.e. viewing messages. Memory usage didn't
increase over an eight hour period while I was away from my desk. TB!
was checking for mail every minute: a tad under 1,000 messages
received.

Try this. Restart TB! and note memory usage. Now browse your messages
with PTV or RTV and you'll see memory usage increase (just keep
clicking on messages.) Every time I choose another message or folder
the memory footprint grows. The RTV has the added problem that
messages larger than about 1M consume heaps of memory.

I see you are creating folders in INBOX... and recall some Linux

specifying the root folder in account preferences?

Another thought. Have you used Manage IMAP Folders, reset the folder

folder name? TBOT, INBOX;TBOT or INBOX/TBOT etc? It may be worth
starting a shell session to see what TB! is doing server side.

But TB! can do pretty much everything NEO does and some _and_ with
IMAP support. It's just a case of sitting down and working out the
best way to do things. For example, I have quite a lot of virtual
folders with tabs for Date, Files, Labels, and People under the folder
tree. These include hot contacts, today's mail, yesterday's messages,
this week, last week, attached documents, images, important messages,
flagged (to do), valuable (parked messages) etc. And colour groups
aren't that different to Outlook categories. In fact, I'd rather use
TB! at work.

Hopefully, future releases of TB! will come with some wizards to
optionally set-up 'standard' virtual folders during installation.
Also, a few predefined colour groups would be nice, especially for

I've tried to get rid of this TB! created problem by
writing a QT to be executed inside the redirected mail.

I don't portray myself as an expert in this area but this isn't a
problem with TB! The use of the RESENT-FROM header is defined in RFC
822. It is the FROM of a forwarded (redirected) message:

,- [ 4.4.1. FROM / RESENT-FROM ]
| This field contains the identity of the person(s) who wished this
| message to be sent. The message-creation process should default this
| field to be a single, authenticated machine address, indicating the
| AGENT (person, system or process) entering the message. If this is not
| done, the Sender field MUST be present. If the From field IS
| defaulted this way, the Sender field is optional and is redundant
| with the From field. In all cases, addresses in the From field
| must be machine-usable (addr-specs) and may not contain named lists
| (groups).
`-

Nonetheless, I'm a little confused... the SENT header will be the
sender of the original message not you. So why is there a problem
filtering? I don't think you should attempt to change the headers but
rather modify your filters if they aren't working correctly. If you
wish to bring the redirected messages to your wife's attention the
RESENT-FROM header will indeed help you.

You can't attach images on TBUDL. What did it say?

RTT Anyone who has done that successfully?

Yes. But it all depends on your IMAP server... and whether you have
permissions to create folders.

On my server I can create new 'folders' using TB! However, many IMAP
servers do not create a folder on the file system but rather a file or
mailbox to store the messages. Consequently, some 'folders' cannot
store messages (since they don't exist or are simply a folder.) TB!
normally identifies these correctly and the folder name is grey not
black. Probably best to use an example:

A simple folder structure...

|
+INBOX
+Drafts
+Sent mail
+Trash

The corresponding files/folders on the server are:

Maildir
Maildir/INBOX
Maildir/Drafts
etc.

If I want to create another folder, say 'Junk mail' just right-click
on the account name and select New-Folder. Alternatively, use Manage
IMAP folder. BTW, use Ctrl-F2 beforehand to make sure you're connected
to the server. This will result in a new file on the server:

Maildir/Junk mail

However, if you try to create a folder in the INBOX it may not work...
on my server I can create a new folder, which in turn creates a file
called Maildir/INBOX;New folder on the server. IIRC I could not do
this with UW-IMAP.

Another example... I keep all my mailing lists in a folder called
Mailing lists. :-) This folder doesn't really exist though. The folder
tree looks like this:

+Mailing lists
 +TBBETA
 +TBUDL
 +TBOT
 etc.

...but on the server I have the following files:

Maildir/Mailing lists;TBBETA
Maildir/Mailing lists;TBUDL
etc.

As you can see there's no corresponding mailbox for Mailing lists
(which has grey text.) To create this folder structure in TB! use
Manage IMAP folders and specify the folder name as 'Mailing
lists;TBBETA' etc.

Finally, make sure you set up your folder subscriptions... again with
Manage IMAP folders.

RTT If you are trying to create a sub-folder of an existing folder, some

RTT storage folder together with a sub-folder from the IMAP folder
RTT manager using the following notation: Parwnt Folder/Sub-Folder, where
RTT the / is the hierachy seperator use by the server.

Your INBOX is a mailbox file not a folder. You can only create a new
mailbox (storage folder) in a folder/directory or using the hierarchy
separator / ; etc. (see my previous post on the subject.) My server
uses mailboxes with the ; separator, e.g. Mailing lists;TBBETA.
UW-IMAP uses folders and mailboxes, e.g. Mailing lists/TBBETA. In this
example it's not possible to store messages in Mailing lists. With
Dovecot it is possible if I create a mailbox called Mailing lists.
Other IMAP servers may differ... what are you using?

Anyway, you could try and create the sub-folder Test by specifying the
folder name as INBOX/Test. You will have to use Manage IMAP folders to
do this. But this may not be possible with your server.

As you can see there's no corresponding mailbox for Mailing lists
(which has grey text.) To create this folder structure in TB! use
Manage IMAP folders and specify the folder name as 'Mailing
 lists;TBBETA' etc.

RTT Why do you use ; here?

The semicolon is the hierarchy separator on my server.

CtrlShiftLeft arrow is how I'd write that. This closes a thread

when you view messages by thread _and_ the message starts the thread or
a branch (the [+] icon.)

The same combination will move a folder left if the account tree is
selected.

CtrlShiftL toggles the log viewer (or whatever it's called) at the
bottom of the main TB! window.

S Shift+Ctrl+R - I interpret this to mean hold down Shift+Ctrl keys
S and use R(ight arrow)

As above, but will expand thread or indent a folder. I'm not aware that
CtrlShiftR does anything.

If there is an unread message in a thread all messages in that branch

I think you would have the same problem with a Samba share. What you

I'd be surprised if you can use hyper links to access network shares.

MW I think you'll find it's the same for URI; you shouldn't include

PO True for internet domain names. From the top of my head, not true for

That's not what I was saying. \\SME\mp3 isn't a directory name it's a

PO Reviewing your original remark, we're getting off track here.

Yep. I'll copy this to TBOT should you wish to continue the thread.

PO Your comment was related to TB and windows shares like
PO \\server\share. This is not internet related, which (very simply
PO stated) uses protocol://server/dir/file.

Look carefully; they're the same... using backslashes is a Windows

PO Just another remark: TB can't work with something like (windows)
PO \\server\share to store mail bases. You'll need to use a mapped
PO network drive for that.

That's correct.

S eventually, transfer all of the downloaded e-mail to the pre-exising Bat

S after 10 months, I am just getting around to setting up The Bat on the

S the_bat_o.exe file to the laptop. When I run the setup file, I get the
S following error message when I attempt to install The Bat to the
S c:\program directory: cannot access directory \\DESKTOP\THE BAT!\MAI

This sounds like a networking problem. I presume you posted your
original message from your desktop PC on your home network; i.e. Windows
XP? Please explain briefly how the network is set up as this will help.
Also, where is thebat.exe located; i.e the installer?

S In place of the word desktop is the name that I assigned to the desktop
S computer on our in-home network.

S Why would it try to access the desktop? And, even though a Bat
S subdirectory was created within the program directory, when I attempt to
S click on the bat.exe file, I get the same error message. Why? Is this a
S network problem or is it a problem with the way in which I configured The
S Bat?

You will have to setup a workgroup for your network; e.g. MSHOME. And in
the workgroup you have at least two computers: DESKTOP and LAPTOP.

If you share a folder called 'THE_BAT!' (in My Documents) it will be
known as \\DESKTOP\THE_BAT! on your network. You need to copy the
installer (thebat.exe) to this folder. Note: shares cannot have spaces
in their name.

Now, from your laptop you need to open 'My Network Places'. If you've
set up the network correctly you will see a folder called 'THE_BAT! on
DESKTOP' (or similar). Open the folder and copy thebat.exe to a folder
on your laptop. Now you should be able to run the installer without
problem.

If you can't copy the file across... there's a network problem that
needs sorting first.

Please explain briefly how the network is set up as this will help.

S Cable from outside feeds into modem, which, in turn, feeds into Linksys 4

S Laptop can be connected to router either via CAT5 cable or Dell Truemobile

Also, where is thebat.exe located; i.e the installer?

S Thebat.exe is located in The Bat subdirectoy of the program directory. (I
S think!) I will try your suggestions, but, unfortunately, it will have to
S wait as the desktop is fully dismantled due to a flood in our basement
S office and it (the desktop) does not have wireless capability. I expect
S the desktop to be back up and running in about two weeks. In the meantime,
S I can access TBUDL through other channels.

The file in the program directory isn't the installer. You will probably
have to download that again...
http://www.ritlabs.com/download/the_bat/the_bat_o.exe (unless you want

Since your laptop has direct access to the Internet via your router you
may as well download it to your laptop's desktop and install from there.

Yes, a little. If you thread by reference the option I suggested is
redundant... it's for threading by Subject/From/To only. I simply thread
by reference and display the message list by received date in descending
order. I'm not sure what you mean by 'sorting' the threads. For
instance, this thread is displayed toward the bottom of my message list
in the following order:

View mode... 8 June 2004, 23:50

Hello Ben,

That's because the messages are threaded by reference and in the case of

BA however sometimes if there are two replies to a particular message
BA then the newest one will appear before the older msg. eg:

BA View mode... 8 June 2004, 23:50
BARe: View mode... 8 June 2004, 23:59
BA new msg--- Re: View Mode... 07:50 (today)
BA Re[2]: View mode... 07:45 (today)

I can't see how this can happen if you sort by time received...

BA What i want to achieve is that message coming in below its older
BA counterpart

Moreover, I can't say I've really noticed that or consider it a problem
since you can still follow the thread. When the discussion forks
further replies will reference to the correct message. For example, see
Mary's post: mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED].

This is what I see (threads sorted by reference/time received):

Author Received Kludges Adjusted (GMT) Order created
Feli16:32 16:55:14 +0200 14:55 1
Martin 16:57 16:52:04 +0100 15:52 3
Urban 17:36 17:20:29 +0200 15:20 2

This is correct when sorting by time received. To display messages in
the order you want use time created.

If you're still experiencing problems and are convinced the ordering is
incorrect send me a screen shot.

That's does seem rather odd. How about tabs such as Part.txt? (take any

MW Also, do you see the following in Options | Preferences | Protection?

...snip

MB Yes.

I'm going to look into this a bit more since changing it made no
difference to my set up.

MW This is from the registry key:

MW
ProtectAllowOpen=*.JPG,*.JPEG,*.PNG,*.GIF,*.BMP,*.ICO,*.WMF,*.EMF,*.VCF,*.EML,*.MSG,*.ARJ,*.ZIP,*.RAR,*.TIF,*.ACE,*.LZH,*.WAV

MB have the file names in Options/Preferences/Protection. I opened
MB everything in the registry I could see under HKey/Current
MB User/Software/Rit/The Bat!. Didn't find that key. Strange.

It's in my setup _but_ I did import my registry setting when I rebuild
XP a few months ago so it could be redundant. I can send you that key if
you like.

MW I decided to remove *.GIF from my list (and subsequently the registry)
MW to see if I could emulate your problem. Guess what? I can still open GIF
MW files without a warning.

MB These are .jpg files, mostly. When I save them to Desktop, they come
MB up with a Gimp icon. (I have the Gimp program, but I don't recall
MB associating Save to Desktop with it. Probably did and then forgot.)

I chose .gif simply because I could see one in my message list.
Nonetheless, I don't think it's a program association problem as this is
about TB! internal protection mechanisms.

MB So what if I emptied the fields for both Enable and Disable under
MB Protection? Would that be safe to do? I could save a copy of them and
MB put it back afterward.

MB What do you think?

I shouldn't be a problem so long as you know that you are opening images
only. I'm going to give this a try too.

Okay, I've chosen external image viewer and removed a file association
in Windows to see what happens. When I double click on an icon, TB! lets
Windows decide how to open the file. However, because there is no
association TB! pops up a windows asking what application I should
open the file (image) with. Clearly, this isn't quite what you
experience but it is similar behaviour. I wonder what would happen if
there is an association but it's broken and fails to launch the
application?

Check what application is associated with .JPG by opening a Windows file
manager window and using Tools | Folder Options... | File Types.

Select JPG (or JPEG) and see what application opens the file (Change
button). There's is likely to be a couple of applications... try
changing it to Window Picture and Fax Viewer if that's not set.

MR Yes. There was a period of time when users of v1.x could get a
MR substantial discount when upgrading to v2.x. The new version has been
MR available for a while now, so I think that discount offer is no longer
MR in effect.

There are some offers on at the moment if you're upgrading 1.x... $17.50
student, $24.50 personal and $31.50 business. The offer should have
ended 1 June but it still shows... maybe if you're quick?

I think there is some confusion about smileys... nothing has changed in
regard to sending messages. TB! will send exactly what you write. It
does not send images. If you prefer not to use 'traditional' text
smileys that's fine. If you prefer not to use the 'alternate' smileys
that's fine. You see, it's up to you. And usually when writing a message
you have a good idea who your intended audience is and if they will
appreciate your smileys.
