Good evening from Japan
Well, it seems I found a better, more elegant solution.
Only a few days I discovered "by accident" the tiny three horizontal
bars in the upper right corner of the 'side panel'.
If you click on those, a number of options appear, the first of which is
"properties".

HERE the funny attributes of the style (ONE incident!) that went haywire
were displayed and could be changed!

That was all.
Isn't it funny, nobody ever mentioned this little trick?

Maybe this helps if somebody else has similar problems.

Cheers
(actually, I have still more questions, but it is too late in the night
already)

Deleting either the heading alone or some text around it does not help

I would typically use a Heading 1 style for the chapter heading and
would modify it to include things like font size and style, page break
before, set up a larger space before the heading and set the outline
level at 1. And then I would have a special page style for that page

I don't ever recall having had the variable font output that you mention.

It would be good to see an example of your problem.

Yes, I used a Heading 2 style (already my custom style) to create a
style for CHAPTER TITLES with said font and font size settings.

Would a link to a file on Google drive etc. help?

[libreoffice-users] last cursor position

2023-07-23 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good afternoon
I am sure, this question has been asked a million times.
When I open a document, the cursor is NOT in the position of the last edit.
In fact, it appears at random locations, different each time I open the
document.

I have modified the user data section under tools, but that does not
change anything.
Deliberately editing the document at different locations, closing and
reopening it (same computer),

the cursor still pops up at totally unpredictable locations.
This happens apparently also with other (not created by me) documents.

Is there a smart trick, anything short of resetting the user profile?

[libreoffice-users] "Match case" greyed out

2022-10-27 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
I just came across something I do not understand (and so far could not
find being mentioned in the manuals etc.).

Using Windows 10, LibreOffice 7.1.8.1
I noticed in Calc that when I try to find something, in the find dialog
* Match case = greyed out = not working
* Formatted display = OK
* Entire cells = greyed out = not working
* All sheets = OK

Now, why would these functions be disabled? I tried to find something
under tools, but so far without luck.

And I am quite sure I was able to search the data with Match case checked.
I tried to reboot the computer. That did not change anything either.

1)    Is there a reason for this behavior?
2)    Is there a way to fix it?

Thank you

Good evening
and I thank everybody for their help.
Summary:
* Yes, my KB does have a backslash. But pressing it (no matter what KB
layout it use) ALWAYS produces a \. They are supposed to be identical.
* I thought about inserting a backslash via symbols, but that alsow
produces a \; in the Find dialog it does not work.

* Neither does copying the "tab portion" from any piece of text.
* I do not use Linux, so those commands do not help me.
* This operation apparently does not work in a text editor either.
* I thought about replacing "space[" with something like "spacekk" (with
or without the space). THAT does not work either.

* I just tried to find simply "[" (without the quotes).
* Unchecking "Regular expressions" DOES find the brackets, but then
inserts "\t[" (where the \ is a backslash). But that is not what I want
.. and not helpful.

Does this really have to be so difficult?
In the hope, there IS a way to accomplish this.
Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] "reverse solidus" not working in the find dialog box

2022-08-15 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good afternoon from Japan
Actually, I have asked about this in 2018 and a number of things were
suggested.

Unfortunately none did solve the problem.
Problem:
I have a long file with about 3,500 lines (each line = item) looking like:
HKES    良知良能 [りょうちりょうのう] /(n) xx/

where I would like to replace the "space[" and "]space" with tabs
so that I can import the file into Calc.

However, working with Japanese Windows 10, Japanese keyboard etc.
NOTHING I tried so far
allowed me to enter a \t (=> THIS is supposed to be a backslash) as a
regular expression, telling

the computer to replace the space[ with a tab.

Question:
Is there a trick telling the computer to replace any key sequence with a
tab?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Saving file produces unknow file format

2022-03-02 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good afternoon (again)
One other question. Maybe related to the one I just posted.

I noticed the other day, that when I use files in a server based file
synchronization environment (ownCloud),
.odt files may be transformed immediately or after having been edited a
few times into an unknown file format.

Usually, I expect to see something like "file.odt" in file explorer, but
for some files - I have no idea why this happens only to SOME files -

I suddenly get just "file".
When I click that file to open it, the computer shows me a list of
possibly usuful application to choose from to open that file.

Even creating a new/blank file, copying the text of the original file
into a text editor and then from there into the new document

produces the same result.

Does anybody know WHY this happens - and if possible could tell me how
to fix it?

Is THIS problem and the other one I described in my previous post
possibly another Ver. 7.xxx bug?

-> I have never seen anything like this before.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Writer slow display

2022-02-14 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
I believe I have asked this before.
Currently running Windows 10 machine and LibreOffice 7.2.5.2 - just
updated from 7.1.8 ..

Typing in Writer the display of characters on the screen very annoyingly
lacks behing my typing.

It is definitely slower than in 7.1.8.
As Mr. Großkopf suggested:
did you try to disable Skia? (Options → LO → View → Graphics Output)

Yes, I did disable that.
With 7.1.8 the "display velocity" (if there is such a term) was
acceptable, but with 7.2.5.2 it is VERY uncomfortable to work with Writer.

Is there another trick that might speed up the display.
By the way, in Calc I do not notice any annoying slowness.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] clicking anywhere in a file make the cursor jump to other open files

2022-02-10 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
Running LibreOffice 7.1.8.1 on a Windows 10 machine.
I am really sorry to bother everyone with these (rather numerous)
strange problems I am facing.

Also something relatively new (did not happen with earlier versions) -
and it seems to happen only with one particular file.

I do have this Writer file open. When I have at the same time any other
Writer or Calc file open too,
clicking ***ANYWHERE*** in the said Writer file causes the cursor to
jump to the next open LibreOffice file.
I can move around in the file using arrow keys, but using the mouse
makes work impossible.

AND .. this happens "when the computer feels like acting up".

Does anybody have any idea what this may be about?

Having to wait for the screen to display what the fingers typed 5

I had a similar problem with an earlier version, do not remember which
(7.2.4.x. ?), but switching to 7.2.5.2. solved it. Running on Windows 10.

[libreoffice-users] "save as" behave very strange

2022-02-08 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening from Japan
I have been using LibreOffice for years by now.
Currently I use 7.18 on a Windows 10 machine.

Let's say, I have a file "xyz" that is saved in one directory/folder.
Now I want to save it in a different location (different disk) where
there are directories and folders of the same name.
The target folder also contains the file, but I want to overwrite it
with a newer version.

E:\AA\filexyz.odt
Here I want to replace/overwrite the "filexyz.odt".
HOWEVER, the directory E:\AA\ ... has 2-3 more folders with related files.
Like: E:\AA\bb\xx\

When I try the "save as" command and indicate the directory-folder-file
name ->
LibreOffice jumps to the next folder one level BELOW the one I want to
save the file in.

And it keeps doing that so long, until there is no other folder any more.

LibreOffice did not do this in the past. Is there a particular reason
for this behavior?
Is there a way to tell LibreOffice to save the file where I want it to
be saved?

Any help would reduce unnecessary stress immensely.
Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Calc file "invalid parameter"

2021-06-21 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening

Again some strange question.

Recently LibreOffice, maybe the computer?, has started to act strange on
some occasions. Checking the net, I found only ONE related item.

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11=96478

This is not really a "problem", but I would still like to know, what is
going on.

I have a sort of "cloud storage" called pCloud, which creates a 5-GB
virtual drive with its own drive letter on my HDD. There I store among
other stuff files I use regularly and update several times a day. For
some time now, a number of Calc files open alright, but when I edit them
and hit "save", I get the following error message:

"Error saving the document "file name".

The operation [path / file name] was started with an invalid parameter."

When I rename the file, I can save it, but the same problem tends to
recur when I open it the next time.

When I rename it and store it in a different location, the problem seems
to disappear.

Probably all I have to do, is choose a different folder to save those files.

Yet, I would really like to know, what that "invalid parameter" refers to.

If anyone has any idea, I would love to hear it.

Thank you.

After futile efforts to make all those symbols work somehow, I recalled
you mentioning "naming a range".
Since I did not know, there is such a concept, I did some reading and
after a few experiments - I hope! - I may actually have solved my problem.
Defining the data range in the sheet "Zip codes", naming it "zipcodes"
(this setting apparently does not accept spaces),

the formula seems to be working .. AND .. looks a lot friendlier!
=VLOOKUP(N79,zipcodes,2,0)

Your idea was VERY helpful! Thank you.
Even I can understand that formula.
(You used semicolons in your formula, mine has commas. Is there a
difference?

[libreoffice-users] specify an absolute sheet address

2021-06-12 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
I am probably, again!, too stupid to figure this out by myself,
so I would be grateful for a hint.

I have a file with something like 25 sheets listing the patients who
visited my clinic before

grouped by year. In one sheet I have all names (about 2,000).

To make my work easier I set up a VLOOKUP function to help me enter zip
codes.

In sheet 2021 that formula looks like
=VLOOKUP(N77,'Zip codes'.$A$2:$B$150,2,0)
and refers to a sheet with the zip codes 3 sheets to the right. This
works fine.

However, when I copy the data (whenever there is something new) to the
"ALL" sheet to the right of 2021,
I get a "N/A", because the formula AGAIN refers to the THIRD sheet to
the right, that does not have any zip codes.

I tried to figure out, how to specify the sheet "Zip codes" as the
absolute address,

like:     =VLOOKUP(N76,$zip codes.$a$2$:$zip #REF!.$B$220,2,0)
but so far all attempts (for quite a while now!) at placing those $
marks have resulted in errors.

I am sure, this is something very simple, but being a simpleton I just
cannot figure it out.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] search for Asian font in English text

2021-04-14 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning.
I have this not very long English text with occasional Japanese
characters in it.
I would like to search for ONLY the Japanese characters, naturally the
font is different from the English but attribut "regular" and size are
the same,

and if possible change their attributes (color, highlighting etc.).

Searching the net, I found:
https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/140748/how-do-i-search-for-a-specific-font-in-writer/
"The Find and Replace dialog (Control+H) should be able to search for
text by font. Leave the "Find" box blank. Then go Other options > Format
and fill in the "Family" box."

However, that does NOT work.
I tried to search for all sorts of things: format, attribute, language
etc., but so far nothing helped finding Japanese characters.

If anybody knows how to do that, I would be grateful for a hint.
Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Collabora experience?

2021-03-12 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening from Japan
The following is probably really stupid. Please bear with me for a moment.

About 3 weeks ago I got a smartphone - first time ever. I did use an
older mobile phone before, but deliberately refused to learn how to
operate that thing.

(I hate these mobile phones)

Well, I also use something like Dropbox, but supposedly more secure =
pCloud (based in Switzerland)
(if someone should sign up there and tell those guys, I referred you (no
idea how that works), maybe I get a GB extra space ... but I am not
trying to do any sort of business here)
Most of the files in there are created with LibreOffice, plus some text
files and PDFs.

This pCloud is available for Android, so I installed it. So far, so good.
LibreOffice, however, is NOT directly available for Android. Therefore I
was referred to "Collabora". Installed that too.

Problem:
When I try to open ANY file (except PDF), I get messages telling me, the
file (ALL files) are "read-only" and saving is diabled.

If I want to access any file, I have to
* make the file available offline
* choose to edit it
* choose a software to do so (here Collabora), EVERY time
-> if successful, I am again asked, whether I want to open a read-only
file, or edit a copy.
* if I edit a copy, that will then be stored somewhere in the phone and
NOT in one of the folders on pCloud.
That renders the whole idea of having files "in the cloud" useless,
doen't it?

The pCloud support send me (partially) the following:
"You can open the pCloud files with all kinds of 3rd party apps but
unfortunately, you can not save the changes in pCloud.
You'll probably need a paid version of LibreOffice in order to save the
changes to pCloud so you have to download the edited files locally and
upload to pCloud.

If you wish to edit files directly from pCloud, you can use Google Sheets."
And Google Sheets etc. is something I do NOT want to use.

BTW, the same thing happens when I use AIRSEND. (have not tried anything
else)

Has anybody any experience with using LibreOffice = Collabora with an
Android smartphone?

Is there maybe a trick?
If not, that is just fine. I consider working with this miniture machine
a form of "digital torture" anyway.

Sorry for the trouble
Thomas

Thank you, but I am afraid, that is not the answer.

[libreoffice-users] Language setting in Calc

2021-02-19 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
In my line of work (translator) I often forced to use MS Office files.
Right now I am working with an Excel worksheet.
I am not allowed to change file name, format or anything else am only
supposed to enter

the German translation of a Japanese text into the designated columns.

Fine so far.
The original file is so formatted that there are font settings for
English and Japanese.
When I work at home (right now) I select the relevant columns and change
the language setting to German.
But when I go to my little work place and open the same file there, the
language in those columns is back to English.
I changed it in my office to German again, but once I am home and start
working here, it is back to English again.

Is there a way to tell Excel files to use a specific language AND STAY
THAT WAY?

It would reduce unnecessary stress significantly.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] LO upgrade under Linux - delete old files

2019-06-03 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
Probably I am just not smart enough (again).
I upgraded LibreOffice from 6.0.7 to 6.1.6 on a machine running Linux
Mint 19.
The Readme file instructed me to run a dpkg command to unpack the .deb
files after extracting them from the downloaded compressed file.

I did that.
It seemed to run fine and completed successfully.
When I clicked on the Writer icon I used before, it is still LibreOffice
6.0.7 that opens.

Looking around, I found that there are OTHER LibreOffice icons, which
start the 6.1.6 version.

Are those old files supposed to remain there under Linux?
An update on Windows deletes those (as far as I know).
Looking in software manager I am told, that Libreoffice is installed,
but there is no distinction between 6.0.7 and 6.1.6.

If I update Libreoffice in the future again, will all the old files be
retained?
Should I **uninstall** Libreoffice first and then make a fresh
installation of the new version, or is there a way of cleaning out old
files?
(I presume, after a fresh installation I have to set up my preferences
etc. all over; that is something I would like to avoid.

Thank you.

2019-05-14 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good afternoon
I have to enter into a technical text a capital "M" with a short bar on
top of it.

Some sort of mathematical expression indicating a vector.

I know there is something like "composing characters", but I cannot get
it right.

All I ever get is a diacritical mark either left or right from the M.
I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

While googling about this, I also found some talk a "autocorrect
options" using : :

Yet, I cannot make this work either.
I suppose, there is a trick for this one too.

Thank you
Thomas

I am very sorry for the commotion.
This afternoon I found out, that disabling the option "Display remainder

I am afraid, I have caused some unwanted excitement.

[libreoffice-users] autotext? question.

2019-04-15 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
I probably made a really stupid mistake somewhere.
Yesterday I noticed (in one of my computers only) that when I enter
"Formula" and hit enter,
I get a table = 1 row/2 columns with the formula E=mc2 on the left and
running number on the right.

Unfortunately I cannot remember where and what I did to make this happen.
I checked: autotext, macros, autocorrect options, customize-> keyboard
(where I deleted "formula"-> F2)

Neither can I find this setting, nor did the keyboard customization have
any effect.

Does anyone have an idea where I should be looking.
This is apparently NOT a LibreOffice problem, but I would still be
grateful for hints.

2019-03-16 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

On 2019/03/16 9:28, Dave Howorth wrote:

>> The problem: there *** IS NO *** (c) in the replacement

Someone suggested the following and I would like to pass that idea on:

"Libre Office installs to an area on your system that isn't user
specific, but is available to all users.  What you describe seems like
the default autocorrect file is in that area, and has restricted access
to your user account, so  you can read it, but not change or save it."

So, I copied the "autocorr" folder from the user profile to a folder
where I keep all my LibreOffice staff.
"Added" the new location under Options->Paths and then selected the
newly added folder as the location.

Now I can change the contents and after newly adding the "(c)" (which I
still cannot find anywhere in the preexisting lists),

the thing WORKS!

Thank you!
I think, that was a brilliant idea.

Since I am struggling with the autocorrect options again ...
I remember that entering (c) once worked .. but not any more.
(c) IS listed under exceptions, but nevertheless it is ALWAYS converted

What I CAN do is: type "(c " followed by some other text and LATER add

But that is a rather inconvenient procedure.

Any way out of this?

[libreoffice-users] word completion

2019-03-14 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
Writer is so friendly as to offer "word completion" while typing.
I am grateful for that.
However, sometimes that list, found under Tools -> Auto Correct -> Word
completion

contains "wrong" or outdated items.

I tried to delete a few, but the next time I type, they are always back
as if nothing has happened.

Example:
informant / information
I have used both, but the former one is no longer required/desired.
So I opened said list and deleted "informant", but that apparently has
no effect.

Is there a trick to convince the list, that I do not want this term any
longer?

Thank you.

I am interested in seeing the macro that you are using.

Well, I am not actually "writing" the macro - I have no idea how to do
that.
I use "Tools -> Macros -> Record macro" and open the "insert special
characters dialog box".

THIS is where the problem is.
As far as I can tell, there is no way NOT to select a font in that dialog.
On top you have the "Search / Font / Subset" fields.
"Font" gives you a list of fonts, but not the choice of "none /
automatic" etc. - or allows you to delete the currently selected font.

I had been hoping to find that kind of choice.

Mr. Pitonyak. Please don't worry. I am not in a hurry. I have been
pondering this for years already ...

[libreoffice-users] (urgent) shift+down always selects TWO cells in a table

2019-02-02 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
Using LibreOffice 6.0.5.2 (64-bit) on Windows 10

I just made a mistake somewhere: I hit some key combination that rotated
the screen by 90 degrees.
Although I was able to fix that somehow, since then LibreOffice insists
on selecting always TWO cells simultaneously

in a 2-column table to be translated. Using for example "Shift+Down".
Even in a newly created document.
I tried rebooting, but that does not change anything.
This is very disruptive to my work. Searching the help documentation I
could not yet find any hints.
Since I am somewhat pressed for time with this work, I would very much
appreciate any hints as to how to fix this.

LibreOffice did not behave like this before the screen rotation. I
presume, something must have happened there.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] disable 2-digit options

2018-12-29 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
I am using Calc to maintain a list of patients including entries like
name, age, date of birth etc.

I tried to set a consistent style to about 20 different sheets.
Sheet styles do not allow to adjust font etc.

I choose character style to set the desired font for all sheets.
Problem:
I DID set a certain "date format"
and
a certain "number format".

However, this gives me either an incomprehensible 5-digit number for the
dates (of birth),
or alternatively a similarily incomprehensible 5-digit number for the
age = 2 digits.

I found under:
Tools - Options - General -> a "Two digit options":

   Year (two digits)

Defines a date range, within which the system recognizes a two-digit year.

In LibreOffice, years are indicated by four digits, so that the
difference between 1/1/99 and 1/1/01 is two years. This *Year (two
digits)* setting allows the user to define the years in which two-digit
dates are added to 2000. To illustrate, if you specify a date of 1/1/30
or later, the entry "1/1/20" is recognized as 1/1/2020 instead of 1/1/1920.

That may be wonderful in certain situations, but leaves me having to
choose between the "age" (MOST of my patients have a 2-digit age!!!) or
"date of birth" of my patients.
And, naturally, having to format those columns by hand, for all sheets
(and maybe all eternity)

AND ... my patients turn out to have a VERY strange "date of birth":
70 ("age" translates into ) 1900/3/10
25                                   1900/1/24
33                               1900/2/1    (I am sure, there is
some logical rule, but I cannot see it)
The above cited help section does NOT indicate any way of how to
*DISABLE *that function.

Is there a way to do so?
I tried to just delete the number in the year field. THAT did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Thomas

The first part - that Edit | Undo or Ctrl+Z undoes the automatic

of adding something to the list of exceptions.

Adding Exceptions to the AutoCorrect List

You can prevent AutoCorrect from correcting specific abbreviations or
words that have mixed capital letters and lowercase letters.

1.

Choose *Tools - AutoCorrect - AutoCorrect Options*, and then click
   the *Exceptions* tab.

2.

   Do one of the following:

Type the abbreviation followed by a period in the *Abbreviations (no
subsequent capital) *box and click *New*.

Type the word in the *Words with TWo INitial CApitals *box and click
   *New*.

Tip Icon

To quickly undo an AutoCorrect replacement, press Ctrl+Z. *This also
adds the word or abbreviation that you typed to the AutoCorrect
exceptions list.*

Here is the copy from the Help section. It says there, the Ctrl+Z action
adds something to the excecption list.

o Go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options... | Replace.
o Scroll down to and select the line showing the unwanted correction.
o Click Delete.
Voilà!

The problem: there *** IS NO *** (c) in the replacement list.
(only (R))
I have looked at least twice. In all three languages I use.
About the two initial caps: in the exception section I have only two
choices: abbreviations (with a period) or two initial caps.

Where else would I have put my request?

When you want to reinstate it:
o Select the copyright symbol in your text.
o Go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options... | Replace;  notice that the
symbol is already in the With box.

o Type (C) in the Replace box.
o Click New.
I just entered (c) under "Replace" AND "With". For now, that seems to be
working.

Although this seems to be a very strange behavior to me.

Thank you!

[libreoffice-users] edit autocorrection options

2018-12-23 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good afternoon
I am frequently working on patent specifications, in which there
references to all those numbers and symbols

in the accompanying figures.
This also often includes something like "(c)".

LibreOffice insists on converting this into the copyright symbol.
I tried Tools -> Autocorrect Options -> Exceptions (words with two
capitals) and added this (c).

However Writer apparently does not recognize / remember this setting.

The help section says, typing Crtl+z immediately after the (c) input
reverts the autocorrection

and adds it to the list of exception.
Yet, Writer does NOT remember this.

Is there a way to make this exception "permanent" (until a time when I
choose to change the setting)?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] insert special characters

2018-08-21 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
At home I am using LibreOffice 6.0.5.2 (Windows 10)
In my office I use a little older version (not sure about that version
number).

In the office I do: Alt+P -> open special character dialog -> select a
character -> Enter
When I repeat this operation a little later and want to use the SAME
character,

it used to be selected already and all I had to do was press Enter.

At home this does not work any more.
I have to repeat to entire procedure: Alt+P -> open special character
dialog -> select a character -> Enter.

Is this an "improvement" (of obscure meaning) I have to live with,
or is there a trick that would give me the functionality I am enjoying
in my office?

Thank you.

For coding in LO, click on Help  About and you will see it.

It says there:
"UI render: default

Does that mean, I need to change the locale setting of the computer?
Living in Japan and working with a computer running the

Japanese Version of Windows that might not be such a good idea.
I do use an (USA) English UI and changing the locale within

apparently has no effect.

Anything else I might try?

This is another problem that has NOT been solved.
BUT ... I noticed that in MS Word (I DO NOT like MS products and thus
try to avoid them whenever possible), I can select a backslash
in the text, copy it to the search field -> where it is displayed as the
YEN sign -> AND perform search and replace.

That works.
The very same thing also works in "Textmaker" (Softmaker product).
It DOES NOT work in a text editor.

Since other softwares are actually able to do this little trick, it
would be wonderful if someone could work this bit of computer magic.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Cut/Copy problems in LO

2018-07-04 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

On 2018/07/05 5:23, Virgil Arrington wrote:

Okay, I've had the cut/copy/paste issue pop up again in LO. It just
happened today. By way of reminder, my configuration is as follows:

Sony Vaio laptop
Linux Mint 18
LO 6.0.3.2

Today, I was working on an LO Impress presentation. I was also running
LyX, Geany (text editor), Xiphos (Bible software) and Nemo (file
explorer). I wanted to move some text on one of my LO Impress slides.
All I was trying to do was move the text to another location on the
slide itself. I selected the text and pressed Ctrl-X to cut it. It
didn't cut. I then clicked on the Edit menu and both "Cut" and "Copy"
were greyed out as if I hadn't even selected any text. I tried some
other functions, such as applying boldface to the selected text, and it
worked, so LO recognized that I had, indeed selected text. It just
wouldn't let me cut or copy it to the clipboard. Both Ctrl-C and Ctrl-X
did nothing and the mouse options on the menu weren't available.

I then went into both LyX and Geany to see if, perhaps my issue was OS
related. Both LyX and Geany allowed me to cut, copy and paste. I could
cut and copy within LyX and Geany and across the two programs. I could
also paste text into LO from LyX or Geany without problem.

So, the problem seems to be that, for whatever reason, from time to
time, LO stops allowing a user to cut or copy text to the clipboard (or
whatever Linux calls it). When this happened today, as in the past, I
was able to solve the problem by closing out the Impress presentation
(without closing down LO completely) and reopening the file. Once
reopened, I was able to cut and paste within LO again.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Virgil

I (the original poster) have been quiet about this, but actually, the
problem is getter worse with time and by now

makes working (translation) uncomfortable process!
The problem occurs ONLY with Libreoffice, but not with any other
software as far as I can tell, using at least three
different versions: older version 4..somenthing, intermediate verions
5.2.. and the newest 6.0.5.2.
Once the problem pops up, I have to try all sort of things like
deliberately saving all open files, repeating the copy+paste procedure
several times among different softwares, or, as Mr. Virgil said, close
down LibreOffice. Usually Write alone WILL NOT be sufficient.
AND .. it does not make any difference whether I use keyboard commands
or the mouse.

So, whatever this is ... it has developed into a real pay in the neck.

[libreoffice-users] install built-in help

2018-06-24 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
(Windows 10, LibreOffice 6.0.4.2, Japanese OS, selected interface
language: US English)

When I press F1, I get the error message:
"LibreOffice built-in help is not installed on your computer."

I downloaded both the English AND the Japanese versions of the built-in
help file and stalled both.

Regardless of the interface language I choose, I still get the above error.

Is there a trick to achieve this.
Googling showed answers like selecting the appropriate IF language, but
that apparently does NOT work.

Thank you

described by Thomas. I am using LO 6.0.3.2 with Linux Mint 18.

Today, I was working in Impress. I've been copying and pasting text
from one slide to another within a single Impress presentation file.
Every now and then, the copy function does not copy the new
text, so that when I press , instead of getting the text I
just copied, I get a previous copy. It also happened when I tried
copying text from another program (LyX) into my LO Impress.

I have to say that the simplest explanation of this for both of you -
and consequently the one recommended by Occam - is still that your
copy operation - using Ctrl+C - failed to happen. Keyboards do fail or
become unreliable, so this would hardly be surprising. Pardon my
asking this, but when did you last remove dust, cat hair, biscuit
crumbs, paper clips, and so on from your keyboard? Gravity is
effective at adding these items. Do you use the "C" key often? Are you
perhaps a member of the Caius College Cambridge Cricket Club?

Here's a suggestion. When you use Ctrl+C you see no feedback of the
process. In other words, the behaviour is exactly the same whether the
operation has succeeded or failed, so you cannot tell. This is
different from using Edit | Copy, where the Edit menu disappears when
the click is successful, but not otherwise. Similarly, using
right-click | Copy, the context menu disappears only when your click
is successful. Just test by using either of these techniques instead.
If you can reproduce the problem with the *Copy* operation performed
in either of these ways, there may be some underlying software
problem; if not, your Ctrl+C is simply not working.

I must say this is an entirely new behavior for me and my copy of LO.
It not only happened when copying and pasting from another program to
LO, but also from one slide to another within LO itself. I'll keep an
eye on it and try to see any consistency in the behavior. So far, it
has been intermittent.

Again, this is all consistent with a hardware problem.

I trust this helps.

Brian Barker

Good evening
I do not want to be awkward, but this behavior seems to affect ONLY
Libreoffice.

(it did not bother me for 1-2 weeks now)

Trying to copy one word selected in a text editor works just fine in ALL
softwares I tried EXCEPT Writer - which insists on inserting some
earlier selection (when it is in the mood to).

How can this be a hardware problem?

[libreoffice-users] Set JRE in LibreOffice

2018-05-22 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
I recently upgraded to 6.0.4.

In recent versions a java runtime environment was set up automatically
or I did that manually.

For example on a Windows 7 notebook
-> tools - options - libreoffice - advanced -> Java options
location: C:\Program Files\Java\jre xxx

However in 6.0.4 the Java options box is empty and when I try to add the
jre:

location (Windows 10): C:\Program Files(x86)\Java\jre xxx

I get the error message:
"The folder you selected does not contain a Java runtime environment.
Please select a different folder."

Actually there are TWO jre versions, both cause the same error message.
The Java version on the computer is the newest one available.

Is there a trick to it, or does 6.0.4 does not use JRE any more?
Thank you.

For coding in LO, click on Help About and you will see it.

It says there:

Locale: ja_JP (ja_JP); Calc: group"

Does that mean, I need to change the locale setting of the computer?
Living in Japan and working with a computer running the

Japanese Version of Windows that might not be such a good idea.
I do use an (USA) English UI and changing the locale within Libreoffice

Anything else I might try?

Yes, I tried that too, but it does not work.
Googling the topic I found an article "Entering a backslash when using

Sorry, most likely my explanation was not good enough.
So, I will try it again. My home computer is now on 6.0.4 - which did
NOT improve things.
(if anything, the apparent lack of scaling capability for the interface
font makes work only harder)

Use any piece of text: let's use A = help / B = rescue
* Suppose now I have a text editor open and select "A" on the editor
screen and press Ctrl+C (or use the mouse to achieve the same thing)

* switch to Writer
* press Ctrl+V (or use the mouse to achieve the same thing)
* I get "A"
So far so good.
* Next I select a different word, like B and perform the same procedure.
* Having done this a trillion times on "countless" computers using
equally "countless" different applications ->

* I DO expect to get "B" in Writer.
* However, Writer insists on copying "A". It does not matter how many
times I repeat the procedure.
* This morning it even continued to insist in copying "A" instead of "B"
AFTER I shut Writer down and reopened it.
* When I use the "Ctrl+C" + "Ctrl+V" routine to copy either "A" or "B"
into software OTHER than Libreoffice, it works as expected.

I am definitely NOT a computer expert, but I believe I can perform a
"copy and paste" action.

In particular when I do this deliberately and with great care.
One might argue, that "A" is still on the (Windows) clipboard.
But if that were true, copying it to other applications should also give
me an "A", but I actually get the requested "B".

For that reason I cannot help but assume, that there is something
strange going on in Writer.
While working in Writer I use Calc in parallel to create a list of term
and their translations.
Copying either A or B from other applications into Cals DOES NOT give me
this grief. (at least not yet)
This is a recent event and I don't thing I have had this problem with
the computer in my little clinic.
Even though this may not be any sort of "fatal error", it is nonetheless
very annoying during work.

Is this explanation a little better?

However, EVERY time I am trying to start those extensions on the Windows
machines (NOT the linux machine: Linux Mint 17.3 / LibreOffice 4.4.3.2),
I get the following error:

Basic runtime error.
An exception occurred
Type:

Message: .
OK

When I go into "Extensions" and disable the respective extension once
and then (immediately after) enable it again,

they work.
But the next time I start LibreOffice it is again the same thing.

Is there a way to fix this?
Googling did not bring up any solutions so far.

Thank you

[libreoffice-users] How to write vertical text in Draw (text boxes)

2017-12-28 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
I need to write vertical text (Japanese) in text boxes but cannot find
out to manage that.

(I have been working on that almost a whole day already).

Inserting a text box and writing something give a horizontal text.
Rotation then turns the whole thing for example 90 degrees, but that
does not

give any "vertical writing" as it is supposed to look in Japanese.

I would very much appreciate any hints.

In general, every string of characters between two spaces is a word.

I don't know about better solution but you could save presentation as
html (as one file) and then open that file in Writer.

Could this work for you?

Kruno

Under "save as" I cannot find anything resembling "html", so the file
has to be "exported" as xhtml.

But THAT give you all that computer language, which will NOT! be paid.
So the count for a test file I opened should be somewhere around 30
pages (translation), but the word/character count

in Writer gives a count like 350 pages.
If the companies would pay me that much, that would be wonderfull,
however that is unfortunately not how the world works ...

When I export it as html, I get a count of 52 words. That is obviously
not correct either.

Apparently, this does not work.

[libreoffice-users] keep cell format in Calc

2017-06-05 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
I have to work (translation) on an Excel file with two columns> Japanese
and an empty column where German has to be placed.
"Naturally" (translation agencies just don't get it), everything is
formated for Japanese.

To make my work easier, I format the "German" column to have a different
font + language AND word wrapping.

I do my work and save the file to "SpiderOak" (something like Dropbox).
HOWEVER, when I go home (or the next day back to the office) to use a
different computer, all that formatting is gone.

I do not believe, this has happened to any other file I have used in the
past.

Is there somewhere a setting, that tells the computer NOT to remember my
formatting?

It is not a major problem ... but bothersome.

[libreoffice-users] style per sheet for different types of numbers

2017-04-30 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good morning
I am using LibreOffice 5.2.2.2 on Windows 10 / 7 / Linux Mint
I do have a file with about 20 sheets, containing patient data - using
both English and Japanese.
Naturally there are ordinary numbers like age (50 etc.), but there are
also dates like first visit etc.

I would like to apply the same style to every sheet.
Meaning:
Japanese font = xxx / size = xxx
English font = xxx / size = xxx
I think I managed to set that up in my cell style "clinic".
However, numbers I can set ONLY to "Date", in which case "50" suddenly
turns into some incomprehensible figure,
or to "Numbers", in which case then the date is converted into a number
that does not make any sense to me (although by now I know, there is a
rationale behind that number).

Is there a way to set up a cell style (page styles do not have any
settings for numbers, fonts etc.) that can handle BOTH standard numbers
and dates?

Or do I have to format every single column in every single sheet by hand?

Thank you for your help.

[libreoffice-users] style panel on the right "crashes"

2016-08-04 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
I just discovered something. Since I never did this before, I do not
know, whether the problem is old or new.

1) Open document. existing or empty - it does not matter
2) click F11 to open the style/navigator etc. panel on the right
3) I pointed the cursor on the double line separating the panel from the
text area and tried to drag it a little to the left
4) with the cursor on said double line, the cursor assumes the shape of
a double line with arrows pointing in opposite directions
5) this operation then starts very fast and wild flickering mainly of
the panel, but also the text area
and the cursor remains forever in the shape of a double line with
arrows pointing in opposite directions

The ONLY way of stopping this is Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task manager -> force
quite Libreoffice.

THAT cannot be normal.
Is there a way to avoid this behavior. It is obviously VERY disruptive!

.*(c) looks like a regular expression. I don't know exactly what the

Well, I deleted the .*(c) from ALL German variants too.
Now, there is NOWHERE in the languages I use (English, Japanese,

LibreOffice 5.1.2.2
Windows 10
Options -> Language -> User IF = English
*Default language -> Western = English (USA)
-> Asian = Default Japanese
-> English (default) is NOT in my list

Tools -> Autocorrect options -> "Replace" by language:
All -> no entries
English -> (C) -> deleted -> no change
Default - Japanese -> deleted -> no change
German/Germany -> deleted -> no change
German/Austria -> no fitting entry*
German/Belgium -> no fitting entry
German/Lichtenstein -> no fitting entry
German/Luxembourg -> no fitting entry
German/Switzerland -> no fitting entry

*"no fitting entry" means: there IS the item ".*(c)", but that is
NOT what I am typing.

So, deleting ALL instances of "(c)" I could find in all languages I use
(English, Japanese, German)

still does not change anything.
When I type "(c)" in a document with German as language setting, I
invariably get the copyright mark.

Do I have to delete the "related" items in all the other German variants
- which I NEVER use - too to make this work?
If this setting cannot be changed at all .. no offense, but that would
be really stupid.

Actually, I did not solve this problem yet.
The suggestion: there is "Default - English (USA)" does not seem to
apply to my setting.
In my case there is "Default - Japanese" (although I cannot remember
having deliberately specified)

Otherwise there are only English (UK / USA)
Deleting the item for those languages /
setting an exception for Default - Japanese does not change anything.

Also, I do not really understand what the discussion about unicode
characters has to do with the issue.

ALL I want to do is type "(c)" leave it standing as it is.
No automatic changes.
Now, this cannot be so difficult, can it?

Well, you have Tools > Autocorrect > Autocorrect options
and there you delete that specific replacement. BUT: you have to do it for the
language that your text is in. Apparently your text is not English (USA),
because that has the (C) [Capital C] replaced by ©, not the lowercase (c). So
check the language setting of your document (or that part of the document).

Thank you.
That is something I have not thought of. However, it does not help either.
I am working on a document written in Japanese (-> a language that does
NOT appear in the langauge field under autocorrect options),

that has to be overwritten by German. I am using a German keyboard layout.
The replacement occurs regardless of whether I type within the still
Japanese section or the already translated German section.

German: neither deleting the entry present in the list of replacements
nor adding (c) as new item changes anything.

Entering (c) for ALL languages does not any good either.
Does that leave "Ctrl+Z" the one and only option?

This "(c)" comes from a Japanese style of numbering (lots of) tables and
items in a manner like "3.(4).A.(c)-1".
Don't ask me, whether that is good/right or whatever. It is just the way

[libreoffice-users] file format problem?

2016-04-06 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
Good evening
I am not sure whether this is a LibreOffice (?) problem or just MY problem.
It happened before, but I will describe the latest episode.

I was working with Writer on a Word (.docx) file. As a translation job I
was supposed to overwrite that file.
The file contained images, tables and objects.
After being 2/3 finished, I saved the file, went downstairs and wanted
to continue working while having a coffee.
However, when I opened the file, saved in SpiderOakOne, I noticed, that
the latter 2/3 of the file were gone.
Including 1/2 day of work.
Even archived earlier versions of the same file showed only the first 1/3.
Trying to open that file with MS Word, resulted in the following error:
"File Format error at
SAXParse Exception:
[word/document.xml line 2]:
Attribute w:hAnsi redefined
Stream word/document.xml line 2, column 73305 (row,col)"

The file contained originally about 4300 Japanese characters.
Even though there was nothing on my screen beyond the first 1/3 of that
file, its size did not change.
When I deleted the second 2/3 of the original file, the original size of
470 kb shrank to 130 kb.
After I retyped all the lost work and saved that first as .ODT and then
later as .docx, file size was 23 and 16 kb respectively.

A different translator translating the same file (probably using MS
Word) into a different language had apparently no problems.

What is happening here?
Does this mean Writer has problems handling MS Word files?
Is it the incomprehensible .docs format?
Do I HAVE to use Word for such file? Something I really do not want to do!
Is there anything to PREVENT this kind of event? (retyping my work all
the time will get me into real trouble!)

[libreoffice-users] update

2016-04-02 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz

Good evening
Questions about updating LibreOffice.
In the past I read somewhere that there is an option of "automatic"
(online) updating for Linux, but not for Windows.

In case of Windows I am "used" to download everything from scratch.

However, trying to set up a Linux machine (Mint 17.2) for work, I
noticed, that the description of the

help documentation does NOT correspond to the actual situation:

Choose Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Online Update

On my LO 4.4 installation on the said Mint 17.2 machine there ***IS
NO*** item called "online update".

Is there a trick to do that?

I also just downloaded the latest version 5.1, but that will not install
either.

I am supposed to:
Right-click within the directory and choose "Open in Terminal" ...
type:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
but get the error:
"dpkg: error processing archive *.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory"

Any trick to solve this problem?
Thank you.
Thomas

Good evening
Nativ ODS format, since I use this file ONLY with LibreOffice.

Does that then mean, I cannot work on the same file using both Linux and
Windows?

Open the file in the Windows machine, go to File > Properties, switch to the
Font tab and check the "Embed fonts in the document" box.
In theory the fonts are cross platform and should work on both OSes...
Please be warned that the file will increase substantially in size.
LibreOffice currently has a bug that causes some unneeded fonts to be
embedded

Hope this helps.

Good evening
I am afraid, I still have problems with this trick.
I have a "schedule" file on a Windows 10 machine.
On the left edge are dates. I specified the format for that column
"number -> date -> (Japanese) date format".

However on opening the file today, everything was garbled up.
Resetting the format to date -> closing the file -> reopening it =>
again everything is messed up.
I tried this several time with different formats, removing the
"language" argument from that column etc. ...
so far the ONLY thing that seems to help is setting the date to
alphanumeric style.
That is basically OK, but I am wondering why all of a sudden I am not
permitted to use something that has been working for years ...

[libreoffice-users] date display in Calc Linux/Windows

2016-03-06 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
Good evening
I am using LibreOffice both on Windows and Linux (not that frequently)
machines.
Recent I noticed, that when I open a Calc file using dates (Japanese
format) on a Linux machine,
save that file via cloud services (here TeamDrive) and then open the
file on a Windows machine,
the dates are still there (as dates), but the font is all garbled up.
I tried all sort of settings, like specifying "date", tried several
different fonts etc.,
but so far nothing has helped.
I assume, there is a trick to do that?

Fonts: as far as I can see, there are no fonts with the same name in
Linux/Windows.
Does that then mean, I cannot work on the same file using both Linux and
Windows?

* I have not really started checking, but it seems, Japanese names
(characters) DO NOT get garbled up.

Thank you in advance
Thomas

[libreoffice-users] paste special

2016-02-28 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
Good evening
I just noticed something that I believe did not happen before.
Windows 10 high-spec desktop machine, LO 4.4.3.2
The same funktion works on a Windows 7 Dell Vostro 3500 notebook, some LO.

When I select text portions on any website and then try to copy that
text into a Writer document
as "paste special" (Ctrl+Shift+V) or my personal shortcut* for "past
text only",
NOTHING happens.
(* I used to use Ctrl+Alt+0)
When I hit Ctrl+V I get the text PLUS formatting etc., Something I DO
NOT want.

Copying the text portion into a text editor works just fine = copy
without formatting.

Do I miss something here.
Or did I "mess" something?

Thank you in advance for your help.
Thomas
