I love your flies. I have used the ones you gave me at Sowbug a few years ago.
I’d love the idea of a mini swap.

Hi Chuck

I needed a specific brand, size and colour as I had already used up the first
100yd spool and needed another to finish the rod. Since I started with a
certain red numbered colour by Gudebrod, I had to get some of the same size,
brand and colour. Gudebrod closed down around 8 years or so ago Due to the
scarcity of this puduct, I only found 2 sellers with the colour/size that I
wanted. They were offering old stock and one of them was so old that the spools
in question were wooden. The thicker sizes were available in limited quantity
but not the “A” that I needed. The rod that I was restoring for a friend is a
1938 Hardy Gold Medal - 4 pieces including 2 tips and intermediate wraps every
inch or so. By the time I had finished there were 171 thread wraps including
the splint end ferrules and guides.

Hi Chuck:

Thanks for the offer, but it is the rod wrapping thread in size A that I wanted
and I have now got it albeit at a steep price. I did buy a fairly large amount
of Gudebrod fly tying thread on ebay after they went out of business in
primarily 8/0 and 10/0 with some 6/0 and 3/0 in limited colours. Thanks again
but I am well stocked in fly tying threads.

Re: [VFB] VFB & Gudebrod

2019-11-13 Thread Gary Webb
I used to tie with Gudebrod partly because their thread was very good. And
partly because they had partnered with Gary Borger and numbered their
threads according to his color system. I have
his booklet with all the colors in it. Makes it easy to match an insect's
color with his system. I think some tying materials were numbered too.
So when Gudebrod folded their tent I was a bit disappointed. These days
I'm not so particular about thread color for tying. But wrapping rods
would be a different story.
I'm glad you found what you were looking for.

Re: [VFB] VFB & Gudebrod

2019-11-13 Thread Beer mit
Hi all:

It has been a while and I periodically say hi to members here.
Since moving to Israel a year and a half ago I have fished very little as
fishing here is nothing to be proud of. I had a bit of a fish in france a
couple of months ago but apart from a bit of a fish with my son in the park
lake nothing else has really happened.
My plans include fishing the Sea of Galilee and as luck would have it, I
spotted some rising rainbows in the Jordan river (on the Jordanian border)
during a rafting trip. It turns out that they ended there at some point from
fish farms in the area. Certainly not a local species.
Being so close to Europe it is a quick and cheap.flight to Europe so I intend
to make.my way there. I now travel alot for work (currently in Japan) so I
intend to figure out a way to.take a compact fly rod and 'fish my way around
the world'.

Keep safe, healthy and fishing.

Regards,

Reuven

Unfortunantly, since Byard lost interest in maintianing the site, we seem to
have slipped to the bottom of the list or even right off! It it little wonder
that we get little interest from newcomers. It really is a shame.  Changing the
subject, does anyone know or remember when thread maker Gudebrod went out of
business after losing a conract to supply dental floss which it seems was
keeping the company going. I lose track of time but it must have at least 5 or
more years ago. I recently restored a Hardy split-cane rod and used a new spool
of red Gudebrod thread that I had but I ran out before finishing the rod and
had to pay a small fortune for 2x100 yard spools of scarlet thread to finish
the job and repace what I had used. Neville (Nev) GoslingGreater VancouverBC

so true, the list has slowed down a lot.
However, it is also our responsibility to revive it a bit.

My fishing was slow this year for known reasons. One of my grandkids took me
out for fishing. Well, this 4 year old asked my a couple of time, if we
shouldn't go out and catch some fish. That's more precise. He is now eager to

Tying season is ahead of us, so I'll intend to stock my boxes with my hoppers,

However, I'm wondering if I shouldn't add something new to my arsenal. For

I have several of the long skinny spools of various colored 10/0 gudebrod that
I could send you as I don’t have a bobbin that will hold those spools. (guess I
could take my new propane torch, some brazing rods, and build a special, wide

I have several of the long skinny spools of various colored 10/0 gudebrod that
I could send you as I don’t have a bobbin that will hold those spools. (guess I
could take my new propane torch, some brazing rods, and build a special, wide
bobbin) Just let me know if you can use them. I know I have yellow, and dark
olive, light olive, gray I think, white I think, and maybe a few other colors..

[VFB] Gudebrod G thread

2013-05-09 Thread Anthony Spezio
I still have not found any Gudebrod but I did try some rod wrapping thread from
Mud Hole. It is a bit heavier but it will weave fine. The fly will be a sz 12
instead of a sz 14. They have the right colors too. I got some Yellow and
Chartreuse that wove well for the Green Drake. I also got some Brown and
Fluorescent Orange that will work for the Rusty Dunn though I have not tyed one
with it yet.
I will try to post a photo later.

Tony turned me on to Gudebrod, but it was right at the end of their fly tying
thread days. I went on an exhaustive search for a suitable replacement and I
found that Hook and Hackle's Euro Thread is a very close match. Both threads
are polyester and the 12/0 Euro thread is perfect for the midges that I like to
tie. The diameter is much finer than other midge threads. I will have to try
some of this Veevus thread you guys have been talking about. It is more
expensive, but if it is as good I will use it.

Earlier in this thread people were talking about needing certain thread
colors. One of the things I've been doing is using white thread coloring
it w/ a permanent marker, which is something I learned from Bill Sherer. I
still have black, olive brown, a multitude of colored floss, but
generally if it's something other than black, olive or brown, I use markers.

Re: [VFB] Gudebrod thread

2012-11-14 Thread Scott Bearden
Tony turned me on to Gudebrod, but it was right at the end of their fly
tying thread days. I went on an exhaustive search for a suitable
replacement and I found that Hook and Hackle's Euro Thread is a very close
match. Both threads are polyester and the 12/0 Euro thread is perfect for
the midges that I like to tie. The diameter is much finer than other
midge threads. I will have to try some of this Veevus thread you guys
have been talking about. It is more expensive, but if it is as good I will
use it.

Didn't know that. But the situation was like I said in the beginning. I was
member of their pro staff (together with Tony. They terminated their tying
program (together with the pro staff) and Chris Helm bought a big part of what
was left from their threads. I only got half of my yearly pro staff share,
but I had to turn to Chris to buy the colors I didn't get. Fly-tying stuff
disappeared from their page, but the rest, rod building products
included, remained unchanged. I didn't know something had happened since then.

I beg to differ. They ran into serious financial difficulties and layed off the

They are now back concentrating on what they do best – Fishing threads etc.

Didn't know that. But the situation was like I said in the beginning. I was
member of their pro staff (together with Tony. They terminated their tying
program (together with the pro staff) and Chris Helm bought a big part of
what was left from their threads. I only got half of my yearly pro staff
share, but I had to turn to Chris to buy the colors I didn't get. Fly-tying
stuff disappeared from their page, but the rest, rod building products
included, remained unchanged. I didn't know something had happened since
then.

In some shops the YLI silk rod wrapping thread is already up to 12.00  100

8.00 a spool.
I still have a lot of Gudebrod Nylon Rod Wrapping thread. I only use it on
Graphite rods.
