What is lame about this is you have to buy a new version of Quicktime Pro to do
this, if I read

1. I will notmake a complete change in location and feed address to be listed inthe itunes directory

2. There is nothing wrong with the content of the vlog itself. The

my feed because I use feedburner. There are MANY people who are ni the

Re: [videoblogging] Re: podcast directory

2005-10-13 Thread Josh Leo

here is the supposed explanation of what is happening...if you know any
to solve this problem (perhaps by dealing with feedburner), you will be
helping many people out!

It appears the feed has already been submitted

I was experiencing this problem and it was annoying and aggravating the
hell out of me. Even after attempting to rename my XML file, twice, iTunes was continually rejecting my feed.

Then I put my thinking cap on. If iTunes
is rejecting my XML file, despite the fact that the file has a
different name, then perhaps the cause of the rejection lies INSIDE the
file rather than on its OUTSIDE name.

So what's the cause of the problem? The problem is that the iTunes subscription service is not only validating any submitted podcasts, but the
iTunes subscription services is actually CATALOGING those iTunes tags into a database.

iTunes tags, inside the XML (RSS feed) file look like this:

itunes:authorsome name/itunes:author

The subscription service is relying upon a database comparison algorithm to determine what iTunes tags are duplicates of ones that are currently attempting to be admitted. What the hell am I saying?

I'm saying that if you've already submitted a podcast, iTunes knows it because it has scanned your file, broken that file down and is holding onto it. If you attempt to
resubmit that same file, iTunes doesn't really care what the file is named, but it does care about what content lies in between the
iTunes tags. If you leave your XML file (your RSS feed) the way it is without altering the content of the iTunes
tags (let's say you leave your name the same), then iTunes will reject your podcast submission if you've already submitted it.

Well, that begs the question - is iTunes
scanning for specific tags and comparing only certain tags for
subscription confirmation? I don't know. Personally, I altered these
tags:

itunes:authorxxx/itunes:author

itunes:namexxx/itunes:name

itunes:summaryxxxitunes:summary

itunes:keywordsxxxitunes:keywords

...and that did the trick.

I also renamed my XML file, but I think that I could have left the
file with the original name and it would have been accepted anyway.

I realize that I'm delving into the XML file and that most people
want to stay away from that. Having the ability to alter the original
XML file, however, is a great advantage and I recommend that everyone
look into accessing it. I've done some snooping around FeedBurner and I
have yet to find any way to alter the XML file from there. If anyone
has a suggestion, let me know and I can do whatever posting I can.

I recommend validating your XML file, first, before submitting it to iTunes. Visit http://feedvalidator.org and submit your feed for validation. Just a hint - the
iTunes Summary field cannot contain HTML and the iTunes Keyword field must contain words separated by spaces, NOT commas.

Please feel free to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you have any questions. I will also post a broadcast on my audio
journal describing this problem. Please feel free to subscribe to my
audio journal using XML, using FeedBurner or by visiting my webpage, at

[videoblogging] iPOD vs Treo 650, Video Blogging: Needs Solutions

I've been playing with handheld/mobile devices, for LiveWebCasting.  Uploading pics/videos to the Textamerica.com blogging servers:http://corracing.textamerica.comI didn't realize until last month, that you can access the LiveWebCast over cellphones.  http://www.jumplive.com/cellphone.jpgThe videos will play using Kinoma's player in a Treo 650.  (play it anywhere with cellphone access, whereas the iPod has to download from a computer)http://corracing.textamerica.com/?r=3393118_ctgry=18216http://imageserver4.textamerica.com/user.images.x/81/IMG_465681/Video/_1002/T520051002170055893.3g2The above Textamerica Moblog (LiveWebCast) has RSS, I submitted it as a podcast in iTunes yesterday afternoon.  It hasn't appeared yet. Will the above 320x240 .3g2 play on an iPod?--What is it about the video iPod that is a breakthrough?- The fact that it is a mass produced device, which has an extensive *distribution* network for content?- The fact there is a potential revenue stream? (pay per download)ABCNews did a piece on the Evening News.  It noted that when iTunes 1st came out, there were only a handful of songs available.  They also showed the Dish Network's video-device PocketDISH:http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/cabletv/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001264117I can't believe I heard "why would anyone watch a music-video than listen to music".  My feeling is the opposite: music is 1-dimensional, I need moving images to complement the music.  I'm a fan of the History Channel, I'm looking for a portable device where I can show small video-clips of interviews, etc.  I was thinking of a small laptop w/DVD player.Over the weekend, there was the DARPA Grand Challenge in Primm, Nevada.  It was mindblowing, how such a techie event had really poor coverage on the Web:I think the general feeling here is, given that this is a technological event, geared towards the science and technology minded, in this day in age, why shouldn't we more or less be able to ATTEND the NQE by electronic means?I mean, heck, I'm DYING to know how more teams did on their Round 2. I know the first tries are over now. Why should it take more than a second to upload a tracking database update?The_StigPosted - 3 October 2005 0:18I agree, considering most every sporting event has a live "broadcast" on the web one way or another it seems like it wouldn't be too hard to do the same with the 43 'bots. (Which incidentally are moving at much slower pace than say a football game.)---I was looking for support, to do a LiveWebCast (using Textamerica.com moblog) but was turned down by the Event (they had an existing contractor) attendees (THEY were doing video-taping, viewed me as competition).  The forum (bulletin board) for the event (http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge) ended up being a "pseduo blog" for people around the world sharing info.  There was even a post, which mentioned that the forum-posters were better informed than the participants! (discovered, through a cellphone conversation to Primm).  The Webcast by DARPA (pictures videos) was not timely at all, like a delay of a few hours.  My Powerbook with Verizon EVDO wireless card had 4 bars of strength.  (see below)  I could have easily taken video, used iMovie to capture/export, then FTP to a video blog site.I was in Primm a month earlier, LiveWebCasting an OffRoad Race:http://primm300.textamerica.comhttp://www.jumplive.com/primm05/index.html  [ kinda a video blog ]The TV coverage only aired today (a full month after), it's the same story: too little, too late.  Only the top-teams were covered (time constraints of expensive limited TV time), whereas I was able to cover a lot more. There was another OffRoad Race (Vegas to Reno) the same weekend: Same Thing.  People were using cellphones to gather info, post on an offroad BBS.  Primitive.  Someone posted:"This has got to be the worst race coverage I have seen. V to R should have been a race where you could access results."Is there a parallel between the above, Mainstream Media VS Vblogging (over iTunes/iPod)?  That "Standard Model"=TV/Print-Media flat-out sucks, is about to get "schooled" by a Distributed Architecture of *individual* Vblogging Video Casters? ("Alternative Model"=Web/Internet)."Agile, Mobile, Hostile" VS "They stunk up the place"[ borrowed from Football ]What struck me about Hurricane Katrina, is that the mainstream media (outsiders) didn't come close to conveying the destruction covering the stories.  (I found it silly to have news anchors in NY travel to NO, to stand knee-deep in water do a story).  If there were a bunch of LiveWebCasters Video Bloggers on site..There was the spreadsheet which was the "Killer App" that gave hobby-computers the push into small-business, which was a breakthrough.  What is the killer-app, that will take Video Blogging..  Is it LiveWebCasting, where niche-sports (or  ANY event for that matter) get the exposure they're hungry for?  A

I got mine in there early. I think it was there when Apple originally
launched iTunes 4.9. But I don't think I ever submitted it. I think
their original database was compiled from somewhere else and my feed
was listed there. But I have tried to help others get their feeds in
there, and I tell ya, it's just a huge mystery. The process seems to
be submit and wait and pray. If the great Apple directory gods decide
that they like you they add you. If not you'll never know other than
you will never be added. They have no feedback mechanism, no resubmit
option and no submission feedback at all as far as I can tell. It
really sucks, and I hope they are working on fixing that, because it's

Or... now what we'd need is a webservice that lets user manage
subscriptions on a website and transcodes all content to H24 for the
new video iPod.  I guess I was right about the whole server side
subscription thing. And I bet people would possibly even pay for it as
Peter suggests. Let the monetization begin. ;)

The future of portable media - we need server side subscription
 management
 http://mmeiser.com/blog/2005/09/future-of-portable-media-we-need.html

 Also,

This is not about gloating this is about loving all of you all and the
awesome creative media you create. This is about the people taking back
the media and about media literacy. :)

Now, can we please turn the web into a giant Tivo? :)

I will write a detailed specification, mockups, wire-frames, and maybe
even do some CSS, jscript and what ever it takes for anyone who will
help me prototype the first server side subscription mechanism capable
of queuing any video on the web with a single click. Let's get this
 party started.

It would also be nice if Blip.tv and other hosters and middle players
could focus in on transcending services and figure out ways to offer
cheap transcoding service because for the time being portable devices
are going to be rife with video codec incompatibilities. Some of these
solutions could tie in nicely with Archive.org and Ourmedia using them
 for hosting.

In fact I could see someone like Prodigem or maybe even Feedburner
offering a service that will take your standard RSS video feed and
transcode all the videos in it to H23, put them on a host or
archive.org and create a H23 iPod compatible RSS feed or better yet a
RSS bittorent feed full of H23 videos, which solves the hosting cost
problem.  ANT could then act as the aggregator of the bittorent feed,
download the H23 iPod compatible videos and hand them off to iTunes to
be synced with the video iPod. (Or ant could just sync directly as it
does with the PSP on windows.)  This bittorent approach would bring the
cost of transparently transcoding and hosting the new videos down
significantly.  But let's not forget... there's also plenty of need for
core video blogging services like Eric Rices Audioblogs.com to offer
all this in one package. Smiley. Smiley.

 Well... I'm just saying. :)

So, I think the monetization will start to happen in the middle players
like Mefeedia who can create marketplaces for finding and purchasing
content and offering services like transcoding for specific devices.
But there's no reason why it can't also happen with hosting providers
and vlog platforms like Audioblogs, blip.tv and others. People will
likely pay for services to get video to specific devices like the
Akimbo, TIvo, PSP or pay for overall access to specific
subscriptions. The key will be aggregating enough great content into a
single marketplace to gain market-share and build a brand, this is why
I think content independant middle players have the best chance.

In order for these middle players like mefeedia to become marketplaces
they will need to manage subscriptions, some may offer transcoding
service, and of course take payments. Think of these middle players as
the grocery stores of media. They may not make all the content, but
they'll be able to broker arrangements with vloggers and content
creators collect pay for subscriptions and services such as transcoding
and pay back to the content creators. (Let's not forget advertising,
which will gain new value on portable devices.) The reason we need
these marketplaces is because I HIGHLY doubt people will buy direct
or sign up for subscriptions on individual blogs. NYtimes for example
has enough of a time getting subscribers and there's one of the most
trafficed sites on the web. So what we'll need is marketplaces. Only a
few select players like Rocketboom and Mobuzz may ever be able get
people subscribing directly, but of course this shouldn't stop everyone
  from trying.

I'll try to make some models and post them soon here and to my blog to
help people visualize what this marketplace will look like.

Also, I forgot to mention Webjay and others who are in a prime position
to offer such services for creators and subscribers.

 I'm a little stoked. :)

[videoblogging] Re: iTunes FAQ

2005-10-13 Thread Bill Streeter
Okay, and this goes for the problems with categorization in the itunes
directory. As far as anyone knows the itunes directory checks the RSS
feeds of everything in the directory about once every 48 hours or so
to see if any of the meta data in your XML file has changed, not the
enclosures (that happens right away) but it refreshes how you've
categorized yourself, any ID images, description, podcast search
keywords, all that stuff. And you can change this very easily by
editing your RSS feed or even easier by using feed burner and it's
SmartCast option. This is where you can add all the meta data that
iTunes requires for proper categorization etc. Once you do it itunes
should update your listing within a couple of days.

The easiest way to do this is by using feedburner and the SmartCast

There's probably worse ways to not get listed on iTunes. Oh, here's

We don't have an Australian iTunes Store, but we are allowed to
browse the U.S. one. However iTunes 6 now figures that I live in
Japan, because when I click on iTunes Store, everything is in Kanji.

Makes it a little difficult to work out where to put my feed. :-)

Yeah--I know this sounds nuts, but wait a week and see if it works.

I updated my feed's description; and sometime within a week I noticed
that it was updated in the podcast directory.

For those with an iTunes account that want to add their feed, go to
this link:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/

Then on the bottom left, click on the learn more about getting your
podcast on iTunes link. It should open up your iTunes, with a place
to type in your feed address.

[videoblogging] Re: Apple's instructions for creating video for the iPod

2005-10-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Yes. If you export 4:3 footage, it comes out at 320x240 H.264 up to
768kbits/sec with AAC-LC audio. The framerate is the same as the
original file

The file is saved with the extension .m4v

However Im sure this is the same as normal .mp4, they just used the
alternative file extension because that is defaulted to open in iTunes
6 when you double-click on them.

If you export 16:9 footage, for me it ended up at 320x180, rest of the
spec is the same as for 4:3

As an experiemnt I renamed my gardenpod.m4v file that was created with
ipod quicktime 7.0.3 export, to gardempod.mp4

It works in a browser, and thankfully also seems to fast start
(progressive download):

http://www.unquack.com/gardenpod.mp4

AS its h264 you need QT7, bt if this stuff makes lots of people
upgrade to QT7, it might help everyone to move to H264 anyway.
Therefore if the fast start thing is OK and people are happy with the
bitrate/res, theres no reason why youd have to have 2 versions of your
videoblog, you could just make everything the ipod version.

[videoblogging] Re: iTunes - Argh!

2005-10-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Cheers for the info.

The reason I asked is that I was trying to determine what settings etc
made the quicktime encoding experience more of a hassle for you than
sorenson. I had incorrectly assumed that when you said you didnt have
time to fiddle with quicktime settings, you didnt do so in Sorenson
either.

I guess what I am trying to get at, is whether anything could be done
to make quicktime more appealing, or whether its a case that youve
gone through a learning curve getting to know Sorenson and its
settings, and dont want to have to go through that process all over
again with quicktime?

You can do either. In the latest version (4.1), The default profiles are
small, medium, and large, but you can tweak any of them (as I
usually do, to
suit each particular video), or roll your own. One thing that was
better in
Sorenson 3.x is that it used to give an on-the-fly estimate of the
resulting
file size every time you changed a setting. This doesn't work in the
current
version, someday I have to make the effort to see if that's a bug that
 they've fixed...

[videoblogging] How to get your feed to show up in the iTunes podcast directory

2005-10-13 Thread Susan
Okay guys, I am by no means a genius, but I am all about teach a man
to fish. If anything I say in this post is wrong, PLEASE reply to
this thread and correct me!

With the coming of the new iPod Video, everyone is curious about how
to get their xml/rss feed into iTunes's podcast directory. Here's
what I know...

1. Set up your RSS
In your xml code, you should have this:
channel
titlekitykity's vlog/title
linkhttp://vlog.kitykity.com/link
authorSusan Kirkpatrick/author
descriptionkitykity's video blog. I'm a loving wife and mother
of two kidlets under the age of eight. Join us on our daily
adventures and absorb our life, mostly taken in thousands of little
five-second increments./description
image
  titlekitykity's vlog/title
  urlhttp://www.kitykity.com/journal/styles/supergirl.gif/url
  linkhttp://vlog.kitykity.com/link
/image
[all the other stuff goes here]
If you add these fields, they will add that info to your listing in
the podcast directory.

2. Submit your feed
My feed is picked up by feedburner. So I go to this page:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/
...and on the bottom left part of the page, I click on learn more
about how to add your podcast to iTunes. Clicking on that will open
up your iTunes (you have it installed, right?) and take your iTunes
to a browser page where you will type in your feed URL. Mine is:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/kitykity

3. Wait!
I read Josh (was it Josh?) saying yesterday that it takes about 48
hours for the podcast directory to be updated. That sounds about
right to me. I updated my feed's description, and within a few days
it was updated in the podcast directory.

That's it! I hope this helps.

[videoblogging] Re: iTunes - Argh!

2005-10-13 Thread Steve Watkins
Its most likely that theres plenty of other ways to create ipod
compatibl video, without using quicktime 7. AS I said previously, we
have to wait till someones got a real device to test on, but in
theory, according to the tech specs that Apple released, other
mpeg4/h264 encoders should work.

If people have an alternative encoder that can create h264 or mpeg4,
you should be ok as long as you adhere to the resolution, bitrate and
audio format stuff that apple has specified. The complication that I
refered to yesterday, is to do with profiles.

With mpeg4 and h264, there are a range of different profiles which
define what features the decoder is capable of supporting. Some
advanced decoding features will only be available with certain
computer software decoders/encoders, and some hardware devices will
only support simpler stuff.

What this means, is that if you encode using certain options, you may
create a mpeg4 or h264 video that cannot be played back on the ipod.

When encoding to H264, you need to make sure your encoder is just
using stuff supported in the profile called 'baseline', not main or
advanced profiles.

When encoding to mpeg4, you need to make sure you encode to stuff that
meets the 'simple profile' mpeg 4 spec.

Specific example:

If you encode using 3ivx, and you select the advanced option 'MPEG
Quantizer (ASP)' then your footage wont conform to the simple profile.
It will be ASP, which is advanced simple profile, and isnt shown as
being supported on the ipod.

Im hoping that most encoders stick to Simple Profile for mpeg4 and
Baseline for h264, and then nobody needs to worry about this stuff I
am waffling about.

Heres another example:

ffmpeg based encoders include options about whether to use B-frames.
Apparently (im still learnign about this stuff), baseline h264 does
not support b-frames. So if you use an encoder like that to make ipod
h264 files, you need to avoid certain options to ensure compliance.

Cheers

Blip.tv and other hosters and middle players could focus in on transcending services and figure out ways to offer cheap transcoding service because for the time being portable devices are going to be rife with video codec incompatibilities. Some of these
solutions could tie in nicely with Archive.org and Ourmedia using them for hosting. In fact I could see someone like Prodigem or maybe even Feedburner offering a service that will take your standard RSS video feed and
transcode all the videos in it to H23, put them on a host or archive.org and create a H23 iPod compatible RSS feed or better yet a RSS bittorent feed full of H23 videos, which solves the hosting cost
problem.ANT could then act as the aggregator of the bittorent feed, download the H23 iPod compatible videos and hand them off to iTunes to be synced with the video iPod. (Or ant could just sync directly as it
does with the PSP on windows.)This bittorent approach would bring the cost of transparently transcoding and hosting the new videos down significantly. But let's not forget... there's also plenty of need for
core video blogging services like Eric Rices Audioblogs.com to offer all this in one package. Smiley. Smiley. Well... I'm just saying. :) So, I think the monetization will start to happen in the middle players
like Mefeedia who can create marketplaces for finding and purchasing content and offering services like transcoding for specific devices. But there's no reason why it can't also happen with hosting providers
and vlog platforms like Audioblogs, blip.tvand others. People will likely pay for services to get video to specific devices like the Akimbo, TIvo, PSP or pay for overall access to specific
subscriptions. The key will be aggregating enough great content into a single marketplace to gain market-share and build a brand, this is why I think content independant middle players have the best chance.
In order for these middle players like mefeedia to become marketplacesthey will need to manage subscriptions, some may offer transcoding service, and of course take payments. Think of these middle players as
the grocery stores of media. They may not make all the content, but they'll be able to broker arrangements with vloggers and content creators collect pay for subscriptions and services such as transcoding
and pay back to the content creators. (Let's not forget advertising, which will gain new value on portable devices.) The reason we needthese marketplaces is because I HIGHLY doubt people will buy direct
or sign up for subscriptions on individual blogs. NYtimes for example has enough of a time getting subscribers and there's one of the most trafficed sites on the web. So what we'll need is marketplaces. Only a
few select players like Rocketboom and Mobuzz may ever be able get people subscribing directly, but of course this shouldn't stop everyonefrom trying. I'll try to make some

[videoblogging] Re: Crazy talk about the future of vloggy media

2005-10-13 Thread Steve Watkins
My main reservation about this idea (apart from licencing issues) is
to do with video quality.

If I am going to pay to get ipod compatible content, I want it to be
the best quality possible on that device.

If a conversion service is taking for example an existing videoblog
video that 320x240 mpeg4 video at a low bitrate, and converts it to
320x240 h264 ipod compatible, then the quality will not be as good as
if the conversion had been done straight from DV-h264.

This probably wont bother people all that much if we are talking about
a free service, but if money is involved then it may become more of an
issue.

The other 90% of the responders seem to be close-minded and have no

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Apple's instructions for creating video for the iPod

2005-10-13 Thread bertrand

Hello,

I have made a small converter that creates videos playable by the
latest ipod. It also creates a thumbnail you can use for your videoblog.

It's only for Macintosh OSX 10.3 +

http://www.mixnbrew.com/patchouli/patchouli_pod.zip (3 Mo download)

Usage:

PLEASE NOTE: You will need Quicktime 7.0.3+ to use it. Encoding is
really really slow on old computers (It can go below 6 FPM, yes 6 Frame
Per Minute on a G3 500 ibook)

Drag and Drop your video file... and wait until the screen is black.

Converted files will be recorded at the root of the Patchouli Pod Folder.

name of the video converted : patchoulipod_movie.mp4
name of the jpg file : patchoulipod_image.jpg

[videoblogging] Getting the iPhoto Ken Burns effect into FCP

2005-10-13 Thread Steve Garfield
This is a fun tip on getting the iPhoto Ken Burns effect into FCP

Begin forwarded message:

 ***7. TIP/TRICK O’ THE WEEK
This weeks tip/trick is from Eric Cosh and John Kaplan who were having
 fun
over on the forum at ken stone dot net
 ***
Yesterday I posted a question about using the “Ken Burns” (pan and
 scan)
effect in FCP like it plays on IPhoto. The reason was that I had
 hundreds of
photos that I shot on a corporate project in Palm Springs, and I
 wanted a
very quick way to paste them into a montage with movement and music
 without
having to use either motion or the motion effects in FCP.

The solution turns out to be very simple as many of you may have
 figured
out. I made a separate folder in IPhoto called best of the best and
 out of
hundreds of photos that I've shot here over the past two days, I
 selected
only the very best shots (now less than 100), selected slideshow,
 chose Ken
Burns effect, one second and faster dissolve, and then exported it as
 a
.mov then imported that file into FCP, rendered it (which took a little
time) and Presto !! a really cool montage with Ken Burns effects.

 John Kaplan added:
Indeed you have stumbled upon a quick and easy solution.
Here is a tip to help you out even more...

You may have noticed that the motion is randomly applied, both
 direction and
 location on picture.
Although you cannot control the type of motion applied you can drag the
picture to set where the motioning will end. Ultimately setting the key
 focal point.

A handy tip when iPhoto decides to pan down to a crotch rather than up
 to a
 face.

One word to describe this nifty little program - SCHWEET. :)

I may not be able to run a cam stream 24/7 (my system crashes and reboots

in the video conferences now that my cam is mounted properly atop my

And this little program will (or at least *should*) enable me to add a

Cheers for now :)

Rocketboom has an even higher subscriber base. I think that it's
more likely that, like Rocketboom, it's more highly produced, more

[videoblogging] How do I rip songs from garageband.com

2005-10-13 Thread aroundtheperimeter
On garageband.com it says download the mp3 when I hit the button it
just plays in anther window. I want to be able to download and use it
on my vids. I tried recording while the song is playing, but it won't
let me record it. So how do you record or download a song. Also does
garageband use the creative commons thing? If there is a better site
to get music from please pass it on to me. Thanks.

[videoblogging] OT: DVD burning in Windows

2005-10-13 Thread Stephanie Bryant

This is off-topic for the list, so please reply privately by email.

I'm a Mac user. My sister's students want to know how to make DVDs like the one I made in iDVD, but they are on Windows machines. I pointed out to my sister that I use a Mac with iDVD, but if there is a similar program for Windows that works like iDVD or does the same thing, I would dearly appreciate the names and URLs, so I can pass the info along.

Thanks,Stephanie

Try right-clicking (ctrl+click) and Save Target As. Garageband.com does
permit music to be used in podcasts (which probably included video) - not
sure what the individual licensing terms of songs may be. If you are
searching specifically for Creative Commons music, creativecommons.org is
the place to look. They have a search engine specifically for that purpose.

Sell now and buy the new one for $100 less. The new one's are only
$1699 you know. If I were you I would sell it immediately. I'm
surprised you didn't expect an iMac refresh about now. It was way
due. Refreshes are typically every 6 months - 9 months worst case.
That's why we're now expecting PowerBook and PowerMac refreshes by
the end of October.

Re: [videoblogging] blogspot Feeds (atom?) rejected by iTunes

2005-10-13 Thread Kunga
Hi B,
All you have to do is submit your atom feed to http://feedburneer.com
and it will automatically create an RSS 2.0 iTunes compatible feed
you can submit for Apple's manual approval. You may have to wait a
week or two for that to happen. Mine took a week. Others here have
been waiting months including the legendary Eric Rice. So circulation
size seems to be an irrelevant variable.

name your feed http://feeds.feedburner.com/jumplive so folks can
easily remember it until Apple lets you in their gate. ; ^ ) Good luck.

How do people generate a Feed .xml from their website blog.html?

What you create with Garageband is yours to use. Mine has a record
funciton which generates an aiff file which I then can rip to mp3 or
just use as is for my bed. It's that RED button to the left of the
play controls. I just created a 4 bar rif that I loop in iTunes with
the one track repeat mode and Crossfade Playback set on zero. Works

[videoblogging] Re: VIDEO IPOD!!!!!

2005-10-13 Thread Steve Watkins
As I said previously, yes it supports many other mpeg4 and h264 files,
you do have much more choice than just the default ipod export option
in quicktime 7.0.3.

However it does not play absolutely all other flavours of h264 and
mpeg4, theres several ways to make a file that wont work. Theres
plenty of ways to make files that do work.

And yeah all the bitrates mentioned are the devices maximum, nothing
to stop you using much lower bitrates.

I am indeed hoping that most of my technical waffle about ipod video
over the last 24 hours or so, will not be needed. I want it to be
simple. Most peoples mpeg4 stuff should be compatible, but unless we
find someone whose got their hands on an actual new ipod and can test,
I couldnt bet my life on it.

Under The export option there is now a new item 'Movie to iPod

If you select that option, it gives you no other configurable
  options
that I can see, so no bitrate to set, no framerate, no res, etc.

It appears to create 320x240 files in h264 at 768kbps, using the
  same
framerate as the source movie. Under the surfac its likely using the
same h264 compression as quicktime 7's always had, so its just as
  slow.

What you seek is a HACK. BUT it may very well be that the video

i would sell the iPod Photo or color iPod for $199 or $299 to a non-

Here’s how:Go to the del.icio.us page of Quicktime .mov files, which is http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:mov.Add tags at the end of that URL which indicate the kind of movies you want. For .mov files tagged “funny,” you’d go to http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:mov+funny.At the bottom of that page, copy and paste the RSS feed of those videos using the orange RSS button. In iTunes, go to Podcasts. In the Advanced menu, choose “Subscribe to Podcast.” Paste the URL you just copied. All goes well, iTunes will start downloading video items from the “funny” feed. Once it’s done downloading, make sure the album art panel on the lower left side of iTunes is showing. Then, click on the video item. Play it in the small panel, or expand to full-screen using the button on the bottom of iTunes’ chrome.>From here on in, each time you open iTunes, any new .mov’s tagged “funny” in del.icio.us will be automatically downloaded.By the way, this isn’t a new feature in iTunes 6. It’s been supported since podcasts were introduced, and first outlined here on Lifehacker in our How to find and add media to your iTunes library with del.icio.us post. The same technique works with music and PDF’s, but it was worth pointing it out again as watching video in iTunes becomes more common. --http://www.skynoise.net

NYU looks like a strong possibility.

Re: [videoblogging] Rocketboom sorta featured on Steve Jobs announcement...

Tiki Bar TV has SEVEN Episodes - missing #3. Rocketboom has about
250. Who said life was fair? Thanks Josh. My Snapz Pro X recording of
the presentation crapped out at that exact moment. But I've got a
still photo if anyone wants it of the menu with Rocketboom listed
and Steve pointing his remote at it. I want my Front Row and I want
it NOW - ala carte.

By the way, I am almost ready to puke over how the mass media
interprets what happened yesterday. NBC Today correspondent saying
this is a 'test' to see if people will buy videos they have to watch
on a two and a half inch screen. And Steve saying there is no market
for video on the go today. So we're going to have to create it. I
mean this is completely INSANE language they are using.

Let's be clear THIS IS NOT A TEST. You do NOT have to watch videos on
the 2.5 screen. There IS A GIGANTIC MARKET for video on the go
today. And Apple is NOT going to have to create it. All Apple is
doing is providing the solution to a long standing problem. The
market has been getting PREGNANT with anticipation for years.
Affordable technology and our new distribution system has just now
fallen into place. so it's really synergy of pent up demand meeting
technological advances - not Apple creating a market or doing a test.

http://futuremediatv.blip.tv/ is where I'm putting the TV segments
for now if you guys want to check them out. You'll have to bring your
own barf bag though.

But I really need your subscriptions please. ; ^ )
I'm just a little concerned about my HTML on the feed site. I don't
want any more accidents over there that don't show up in iTunes. NBC
Today is the most hilarious of the bunch. Should have it up in the
next hour or so.

Hi...

I thought this might be a good distribution exercise..

What are your 3 favourite videofeeds and why?

Make sure you include the feed of each.
As additional incentive add your own feed and tell us why it exists.

RE: [videoblogging] Rocketboom sorta featured on Steve Jobs announcement...

2005-10-13 Thread Jim Vinson

In reference to the test part. I think it
is a test with regards to old media production. I agree that it might (and
hopefully will) be irrelevant. This is important because this may be where the
difference in new narrative entertainment comes as well. Their excesses will
open the doors for more challenging, personal an poignant shows.

Production of one show I know of costs
roughly 1.7 million. That is a pretty good middle number considering that was
one episode salary for each actor on friends. This particular show airs on UPN.
UPN pays 1.2 million for the rights to air the show first (the day after they
air the rights go back to the production company). So they are at a $500,000
deficit for each episode. Traditionally the thought has been to make it to 5
seasons so you can syndicate and ride that gravy train. Recently you have
started to see DVDs making a big impact with TV shows. It started with
premium cable shows, but now the DVDs come out before the next season for
many of the popular broadcast shows.

But that is traditional media. So, this is
the test.. for them. Im a believer, though. Remember it was only 10
years ago when major technology analysts said the internet would be the CB
radio of the decade. When we started DivX, analysts said, I kid you not, one of
our major competitors for video delivery was Enron. That is not a typo, Enron.

So take it with a grain of salt and as a
challenge. (would it be to cheesy to throw in a the revolution will not
be televised? ;) )

Tiki Bar TV has SEVEN
Episodes - missing #3. Rocketboom has about
250. Who said life was fair? Thanks Josh. My Snapz
Pro X recording of
the presentation crapped out at that exact moment.
But I've got a
still photo if anyone wants it of the menu with
Rocketboom listed
and Steve pointing his remote at it. I want my
Front Row and I want
it NOW - ala carte.

By the way, I am almost ready to puke over how the
mass media
interprets what happened yesterday. NBC Today
correspondent saying
this is a 'test' to see if people will buy
videos they have to watch
on a two and a half inch screen. And Steve
saying there is no market
for video on the go today. So we're going to have
to create it. I
mean this is completely INSANE language they are
using.

Let's be clear THIS IS NOT A TEST. You do NOT have
to watch videos on
the 2.5 screen. There IS A GIGANTIC MARKET
for video on the go
today. And Apple is NOT going to have to create
it. All Apple is
doing is providing the solution to a long standing
problem. The
market has been getting PREGNANT with anticipation
for years.
Affordable technology and our new distribution
system has just now
fallen into place. so it's really synergy of pent
up demand meeting
technological advances - not Apple creating a
market or doing a test.

http://futuremediatv.blip.tv/
is where I'm putting the TV segments
for now if you guys want to check them out. You'll
have to bring your
own barf bag though.

But I really need your subscriptions please. ; ^ )
I'm just a little concerned about my HTML on the
feed site. I don't
want any more accidents over there that don't show
up in iTunes. NBC
Today is the most hilarious of the bunch. Should
have it up in the
next hour or so.

[videoblogging] HandBrake Rips iPod Size mp4 from Protected DVDs

2005-10-13 Thread Kunga
Just did a test. I am not talking about illegal copying. I just
confirmed you can use Handbrake to directly rip macrovision protected
DVDs THAT YOU OWN to iPod size mp4 files. Just ripped my DVD which I
OWN of Spiderman 2 to a 253 MB portable copy in 90 minutes 320 x 128
widevision. 2 hours 7 minutes. Blown up on my 1920 x 1200 monitor it
still looks better than VHS. Whoopie! Mac the Ripper not needed. This
was done on a dual 2.5 G5 PowerMac.

So I am thinking of the iPod with video containing a small DVD
library for vacation and business trips. I wonder how long it will
take Apple to convince Disney to offer these kinds of micro films for
$4.99. I guess about as long as it will take to convince Pixar. ; ^ )

Anyone here ordered their video iPod yet?

[videoblogging] Video-enabled iPod: What's the Big Deal?

2005-10-13 Thread Dave Huth
Spent the day pretty excited about the new iPod and (especially) iTunes.
Tonight I was
trying to explain to a friend how groovy it feels to have my vlog listed in
iTunes and even
featured in one of the video podcasts sliders on the store.

He didn't get it and couldn't understand why any of this made any sense beyond
a small
curiosity or geeky fetish. After 30 minutes of instant messaging i realized
that he simply
likes TV. He's fine with it the way it is. He was fine with the public
discourse around the
election last year. He doesn't _want_ to join the conversation. in his words,
I just want to
go to work, make my car payments (yes it is an SUV) and watch my Desperate
Housewives.

I had reached an impenetrable wall. Of course I have no response for this. It
was really
weird to realize that this thing I am very passionate about (cultural change
around the way
we communicate and exchange ideas) was completely off my friend's radar.

I've been trying to write something about why I think this is important in my
new blog
(
http://vlognik.blogspot.com/2005/10/ready-for-mantime-soon-we-will-all-be.html
).
Of course this isn't really about why the iPod specifically is cool. That's
just a shiny new
tool that is an exciting point of departure for a bigger idea.

I'm curious if other folks who might be excited like I am meet many blank
stares from
friends and family who don't get what the big deal is.
