I've been thinking about the Xacti cameras lately (or others of similar design), and have been trying to read up on them online. So, I was wondering if some folks with various models of xacti (or similar form factor) cameras could reply here with which model you use, and a link to an example video. I'm basically trying to see the actual end result video from the various models. Indoor lighting vs outdoor, color quality, etc etc etc But if you want to include other information such as battery life / gripes /etc that would be most welcome as well. :-) I've read on this list that some people are disappointed with the sound these cameras capture ... I'm wondering how it compares to using internal mics on other cameras though ... worse than normal or just the standard internal mics suck? Happy Birthday! It's like the iSight was built for you, Schlomo. Very few people could make films as entertaining as that with their MBPs. I bet no one else's MBP iSight videos will get shown at Pixelodeon next year. And it feels different somehow that it's on Facebook... sorry - the Facebook. Nicer forum for it than just a mass video sharing site or a blog. (that reminds me - I saw on Viddler they're giving away iPhones to people who make 30 second MeToday videos this month.) What you say makes total sense to me - the immediacy and satisfaction of it. It's been low maintenance creative fun for me to snap stuff, cut it occasionally in the phone and just send it off. You only have to worry about what's in front of the camera - you haven't got half your brain in the future, thinking about downloading, compressing, uploading, posting, etc and whether what you're shooting is worth the effort down the line. So it just frees you to just Do Stuff. The little creative muscles need flexing as well as the big ones. Not that mine would be as fun as yours, but I'd love to be able to do it. God DAMN, i wish i could afford a Macbook Pro (the phone i use was a free upgrade btw, and the phone plan is pretty average - all data goes via regular wifi). I am in webcam hell with this Powerbook. RE: [videoblogging] Lies, Damned Lies And Statistics
Stat tracking for media is a bitch. Content can be linked in and pulled around by so many aggregators, rss-forwarders, etc. that one single piece of media can appear in 10 different places quite easily. I have no solid suggestions yet :) but this is a conversation dear to my heartand all my pulled out hair. -- -Devlon http://devlonduthie.com | http://mefeedia.com | http://node-64.com/blog MSN: du.th.ied AIM: devlond -Original Message- From: videoblogging@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rupert Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2007 7:06 AM To: videoblogging@yahoogroups.com Subject: [videoblogging] Lies, Damned Lies And Statistics I'm on a roll, today. I'd like to suggest that more of us should try to be open about how many views we get. I mean, not *all* of us, obviously. There are those of us who won't want to say for commercial or other reasons. But I keep hearing people worrying about how few views they're getting. And I'm sure that part of their worry is that other people are getting far more. And I'm not sure that that's true. I'd bet any money that 99% of the people on this list get two figure views for all their videos combined per day. And I'd bet the majority get single figure views per day. This is important in the discussion of monetizing videoblogging, too, perhaps. I think Youtube has distorted expectations - by its nature, it attracts clusters of people to feast on certain featured popular videos in a way that's quite different to what a lot of us are doing. And as Mark Day said last week, even on Youtube the really big view numbers are rare. Personally, I don't think that getting just a few people per day or per week is bad at all. Your films are still being seen by more people than they would if you were taking them to a local film night, or showing them in a local gallery, which was the only forum for them before the web. And you're actually connecting with the people who are watching them, in a way that wouldn't happen otherwise. And probably in a more profound way than you would if you had 1000 people all wanting to talk to you. You don't have to join in this game - it's not Truth or Dare! - but to get the ball rolling, here are my own stats. They're a bit weird compared to most, probably, because I only started Twittervlog 3 months ago, I've made 89 videos in that time and I pimp it all the time on Twitter - that must be where I get most of my views. I feel it's been successful on a personal level - I've met all sorts of great people and it's been a lot of fun. But featured status on Youtube - or even on Blip - it ain't. I have posted 89 films. With 14,000 views in total. That's an average of 150 per film. I figure - what? - half of those have actually watched the video to the end? 25 videos ( a third of them) have less than 100 views in total another 57 videos (almost two thirds) have between 100 and 250 and only 7 have more than 250 - all of these have been featured somewhere, like The End of Pixelodeon, or the Vlog Deathmatch video. The Vlog Deathmatch video is the most popular, and has topped out at 765 views. Which is a fraction of what Irina and The Burg's total votes were, I'm sure! At the end of the Deathmatch, I think it'd had 350 or so views. The only Youtube context I can give to this is the Flashmob video, which has had 13,000 views on Youtube, and 746 on my site. Oh, and I now have around 50 or so subscribers (Feedburner number). I don't know - maybe I'm wrong and you're all getting thousands and thousands of views for every film you make... but my heart tells me that's not so... and if it isn't, do we average non-commercial videobloggers need to readjust our expectations? Is getting 100 views on a video after it's been out there for a few months really so bad? Imagine those 100 people in your local bar or in your house! That's quite a lot of people. And then add all your videos together. You've made 50? And they average 100 views in the end? That's 5000 in total! And 5000 was a big number for Jesus... :) I remember a time when we complained about people's Feedcounters, and the pressure of popularity that comes with people talking about statistics. I hate that. But on the other hand, it's terrible if everybody thinks that they can't say how many viewers they have because they'd be perceived as unpopular and unsuccessful. I'd be really interested on your thoughts about this. Rupert http://twittervlog.tv/ http://feeds.feedburner.com/twittervlog/ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Groups Links

Re: [videoblogging] Re: NewTeeVee Request for reactions to State of Vlogosphere
Don't forget, Mefeedia is driven by user-added feeds. People add feeds to Mefeedia because they want to pull media in from different sources to get their fill. So the numbers would never be indicative of 'whats out there' (have fun with that task), but more importantly...what are people indexing? And from what distribution channels. I don't think the focus of those numbers were meant to be on where the video is hostedit's about distribution, not housing. I look forward to making the numbers more granular so we can answer questions like, who tags what where, why, whenin association with what else...Once geolocation picks up more (we index this now as well) in feed meta we can start seeing global hot spots (besides the obvious) that is a different view on things than an excellent site like vlogmap.org (which is another old-timer in this area) One interesting thing that comes out of these numbers is maybe youtube does a good enough job of aggregating that type of content on it's own site...so viewers don't need to set them up in an aggregator ...a theory... Thanks Jan, that's a better way of what I was trying to say. Use all the main tagging services you can handle, not just one. I think we've fixed up the blogger-mf formatting, please let me/us know if you see something that looks goofy. The new changes related to tagging involve parsing the description, content and content:encoded of the rss item/post for rel=tag (this should be in everyone's workflow imho) as well as adding keywords from media:keywords, media:category and itunes:keywords. I was pretty surprised how many people don't tag their clips. Re: [videoblogging] Re: FireAnt.tv video thumbnails
This is a good point Steve, Ro and his flash-thumb things were freaking greathaven't seen anything beyond this. imho, it is were me, and it used to be :) as a content-creator, I found snapping a thumb of my clip and using it in my post, ad therefore in my feed took far less time than the value I found in making sure that the feed looked good in the aggregators. I'd love to wait and see what crazy new thumb/flash thing that someone builds, but for the time being it seems so simple and easy to have a thumb for a clip in a feed. Spending as much time as I do around aggregators, etc. the ones with thumbs for each clip look more enticing.it's all part of packaging really. People spend a ton of time building out their blogs, video-content, etc.but (in most cases) spend very little time on the presentation of thier rss feed. Since rss (so far) is a huge part of the ditribution method of this new media I would think it would be very important to have a robust rss feed with as much metadata as can be jammed into it. I didnt populate it. YOU did. and I am proud of that because i think it is an interesting gauge of this vlog community. I also think that it works mostly as a passive filter. Meaning, people actually take a few moments to submit their videoblog and vodcast (rss feed). That means that they think they have something good to share with others. so they choose to take some measures to do that sharing. vlogdir is always a top 10-20 result in google... so it helps somewhat. I also believe that vlogmap.org has worked this way for almost as long. though i totally love mefeedia they are not only opt-in and they actually went through a period when they sucked in a boat-load of feeds from other services like blip, vimeo, vsocial, youtube etc. i call most of those feeds orphans. but mefeedia is like the best overall vlog/feed aggregator i think and they do a tremendous amount of right stuff so, this is in no way to traject anything negative on mefeedia. they rock and when i can, i help them out with feedback. fireant.tv is opt-in too but last i checked, they also add in their own selections as well. the weird part is the fact that any feed you enter in the app, gets added to a database as part of a review queue and if it looks tasty, it will end up on the web directory. i think you can opt-out of that happening on mac version. but many feeds on fireant.tv are added by fireant themselves as well as the community (whether intended or not). the only time i truly think its nasty to add feeds without opt-in is when some site appears out of nowhere and sucks in feeds and wraps ads around everything. they are obviously just trying to rank high in search results and make a few bucks. no value back to the community and no value to the publishers. its cheap and its dirty. and it creates a bad reputation too. RSS... yes if you put out a feed, as a general rule you are syndicating your content to anyone on the web. Preferably, you want that content grabbed by an audience, not by random aggregator sites. But you also realize that some of the reputable aggregator sites actually do help you gain exposure and get traffic and distribute your media. More people can subscribe to you. It can be a very good thing if you actually want to spread your media. But you should respect the aggregator and if you dont, you should be able to tell them to remove your content. and they should respond asap. network2 seems like they are trying to add value to the community. i think they might succeed. we'll see. vlogdir.com... well the project was one of the originals to come out of this community and its in auto-pilot. it still serves and represents the vlogosphere but i have not personally focused on evolving the project. after all, it is what it is. what else can it be? i promote vlogs that i like a lot... on the site and elsewhere. and every once in a while i need to delete some vietnam tourism site etc but for the most part, the directory has been problem free. thats a success story. to me at least. maybe in 2007, i will carve a little time out to improve the site. in mean time, make sure any agg-newcomers work like mefeedia, vlogdir, fireant, vlogmap, blip. the originals who give full attribution and add value to the community. oh, i suppose network2 as well ;) sull On 12/14/06, Markus Sandy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i think i see a difference aren't fireant and mefeedia opt-in ? also, i don't think they *feature* sites from people who wish otherwise On Dec 14, 2006, at 1:32 PM, Heath wrote: I don't see what you are doing as any different than Fireant, or MeFeedia, etc. You are providing a way to view video on the web, vlogs, etc.at least you are providing link backs and other things

I come from a lot of different worlds of storytelling--politics, technology, law and most recently film--and am so excited to be at the forefront of the next kind of storytelling and expression! I have also just started to work as the Director of Content Development at Veoh.com, which will soon launch out of beta. Its my job to bring creators to our website and to make Veoh as responsive and supportive as we can be to creators and producers. Through reaching out to some of you individually (been watching an awful lot of video lately) and through others reaching out to me, I have discovered that, prior to my tenure at Veoh, our outreach to the Vlogging community left quite a lot to be desired. While I was not even a twinkle in the Veoh eye at that point, I will do my best to make sure it will not happen again--and would love your feedback, thoughts and suggestions! I am not a marketing person--or a spy (maybe one day if this whole storytelling thing doesnt pan out...). I am just another producer trying to figure out and be a part of the future of storytelling. Re: [videoblogging] Re: National Lawyers Guild Condemns Attack on Free Press
Think back 6-7 years ago, did this shit happen as often back then? Maybe they were just better at keeping it quiet. I can't believe the direction the American government is headed. I am Canadian and therefore I feel I can do very little, but why, why does the American population put up with this crap. I don't get it. It's getting worse every day, more bizarre things that this dictator (yeah, I said it) is getting away with. I am not a political person, but it scares the hell out of me to see they way this is headed. On 7/14/06, Enric [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Related story on CNN, Police seize newspaper's photos Pictures, along with TV station's video, are later returned: http://tinyurl.com/f6knp --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Josh Wolf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: For Immediate Release July 13, 2006 National Lawyers Guild Condemns Attack on Free Press San Francisco video journalist Josh Wolf is being charged with civil contempt for exercising his first amendment right and refusing to provide a federal grand jury with video footage he shot at a protest last summer. The Guild believes that the grand jury is being improperly used to obtain materials which would normally be protected under California's Reporter Shield Law. *The civil contempt hearing is scheduled for July 20th at 1 p.m. before Judge William Alsup and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) will host a press conference at noon in front of the Federal Building—450 Golden Gate in San Francisco on that day. * The US Attorney's Office, led by Assistant US Attorney Jeffrey Finigan, are attempting to force Wolf to testify before the grand jury and hand over a video tape of a protest that occurred in San Francisco's Mission District last July. My client's political activity and free speech activity in the Bay Area as a journalist and this subpoena, with its associated threat of jail time for noncompliance, has an incredible chilling effect on his and other journalist's freedom to gather and disseminate information of groups who espouse dissident beliefs, said Attorney Jose Luis Fuentes, of the Oakland based Siegel Yee firm, who is representing Wolf on behalf of the National Lawyers Guild. The use of federal grand juries to target journalists and political activists who are critical of the repressive domestic and international policies of the United States government is an attack on democratic free speech activity. The implications of Josh Wolf's case go well beyond a single journalist or protest. Like the Judith Miller case or the BALCO case this is about the government's ability to take an independent and free press and treat it as an investigatory arm of the government, said Carlos Villarreal, Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild San Francisco Bay Area. The people of California have made it clear through our shield law that we prefer a free press that doesn't have the government constantly looking over its shoulder. California's shield law, according to a recent court decision on the matter, is intended to protect the gathering and dissemination of news. In that decision, the California Court of Appeals in San Jose confirmed that the law protected internet bloggers just as it protected corporate news reporters. Federal protections are not as strong. People protesting or on strike for better wages or marching for amnesty should feel free to do so in front of journalist's cameras, just as they should feel free to talk to journalists, said Wolf. A free press benefits all of us, he said. Court documents and past news articles can be found at http://joshwolf.net/grandjury/ -- The Revolution Will Be Televised - http://www.joshwolf.net Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] A Message from Andrew Congdon [Was: *quasi-transcript*}
Andrew''s too worried about what people will think. He needs to just do it. Make the show. Second, as usual, the real truth is in the middle and we're starting to see that middle. Amanda should have just waited and let Rocketboom grow. Unfortunately she was thinking too much about herself and not being a team player. More trajically, this episode is a grand example of what people -- most people -- do to thwart success. I've seen this time and again, and experienced it when I was working to bring the Super Bowl to Oakland. When people who are involved in something that suddenly gains massive success, they want to break it up such that they have more 1) control and 2) money. It's always this dynamic at play. It always comes with people who are not experienced in life or business matters or both. They can't see a bigger picture from the place that caused the growth to begin with; they want to change the role so it's all about them. Success is never all about one person. There's always a team behind it. Amanda, here's my message to you: in the future, be patient and as the saying goes When you're invited to the biggest dance of the year, you go with who 'brung ya. In this case, that person was indeed Andrew and you should have brung him to LA. Be careful to always tell the truth, even if it doesn't make you look good. What you did was alter the story to create a fictional tale of good (you) and evil (Andrew). I think you owe him an appology. Also, try to work within a team, even as your star status grows. You don't want to be marked as hard to work with so let this be a lesson. Jason, here's your cautionary tale writ large. Buyer beware. Andrew, move on and make the show. As of now, it's 10:08 PST and there's still no show at all. That means it's after 1 EST. What's up? Just do it. Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Feed URL in your signature.
I am in the vlog-site then feed camp as well. I like visiting a person's vlog. It gives me a better sense of who they are, what they are into, etc. Sometimes it even give a bit more context to their videos. If I like what I see, then I subscribe to the feed. Even when I use mefeedia, or bloglines to see what's new in my subscriptions, most time I will go to the site, load the video from there. Unless it's someone that I've been subscribed to for a very long time, in which case I'll load it right up in mefeedia. On 5/30/06, greg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi. I have just started my vlog last month, and have posted around 7 videos so far. I have a few more Waiting in the wings. (actually, they are starting to stack up) How often do people post vlogs? Is it daily, once a week, a couple of times a week? I have not been in the community long enough to figure this out yet by following the RSS feeds. some people post everyday, some a few times a week, others a few times a month if that. I started hot and heavy with a post almost everyday, but that's tough to keep up (we had so many technical difficulties it wasn't funny, ok mildly funny)I have been checking out my visitors via sitemeter, but I don't seem to have that many. I don't want to post videos faster than they get viewed, but if I have no viewers, should I still post videos?For sure, 'post them and they will come view'at least some will :) Everybody videoblogs for their own reasons. Some for fame, some for speaking their mind, some for connections and conversations, others for experimentation with the video/'net medium...and some for all of the above. In my opinion, you should always be doing it for yourself, then you'll never have to worry about satisfying someone, 'cause at least you will be satisfied. Chances are pretty good that someone else will find what you are posting interesting and will come watch.I find that interacting with other videobloggers is a great way to get your site seen a bit. Interacting with this list a great start. going to other videoblogs and watching, commenting, interacting, maybe even collaborating will help to let others know that you are around and you may see your stats grow. Just my two cents...I don't have that many viewers either and I've been doing it for a year now :) But I have come to think of the viewers that I do have as my friends (interacting with them through comments, conversations, etc.) and wouldn't trade those 20-30 people for a 100 more. Anyway, enjoy and welcome :)Any thoughts? Thanks! Greg. http://gregsvideoblog.blogspot.com SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! [videoblogging] Tracking the conversations, etc.
I don't think I've ever posted a real message to this group, so if I breach any etiquette it's only out of ignorance :) ...but something has been bugging me for a while now and I think if any group people can address it, it would be this group. We saw during videoblogging week 2006 how hard it was to keep track of all the videos being posted with the 'videobloggingweek2006' tag...granted we were relying on technorati which kind of left us hanging. Now with the 'ism' conversations recently I find it hard to keep track of the every one's input to that conversation. Tags are great, but (unless I am dense and don't know how to use blogger) blogger doesn't provide an easy interface to add tags to posts. Videobloggers may not be inclined to copy and paste the required html or even know how to use tags properly. Before I started videoblogging I am sure it was easy to keep track of these threads since there were a few people participating...but since the explosion, there's just too many to keep up with 'manually' I guess in my usual round-about way I am asking this: how can we facilitate conversation tracking? Groups, and social networks aren't good for this since they are confined to the hosting site. Do we need to promote tag usage more? Do we need to poke and prod blog hosting services to provide support for tags (ie, make is easier to tag). I think tags are the way to go, but it seems like something is missing. -- ~Devlon http://loadedpun.com | http://mefeedia.com http://8bitme.blogspot.com | http://devlonduthie.com YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Copyright radical
Ok, maybe I am naive or just too new to all this, but I don't see a problem at all. If someone wants to protect their work, they use a license. We have optionsall rights reserved (not granular enough imho) and CC. I feel the great thing about CC is the granularity. I can choose what rights I'd like to reserve.If someone doesn't agree with NC, or ND, then don't use it on their work...simple, done.I can't think of a better way to phrase this, so please forgive the bluntness of it, but it seems like those who oppose the noderivs portion of CC feel that anything released online should be open to them to play with. For what it's worth, since this thread has totally gone awry anyway...I don't think it's boobs that are the offensive thing here. I am a big fan of boobs myselfand all them other parts.It's the we've got a show that needs a face, or something in front of it...talkingI know, let's get a hottie...as some have mentioned, that's their prerogative, if that's what they want, I guess that's what they want. I (as I am assuming Josh was) was surprised that here we have this new media, this new chance to try to avoid the pitfalls of traditional media and we have those who are going for the easy hook...skin, sex, whatever. Personally, it would be great to watch a vodcast, episodic style videoblog that didn't have the trophy hottie...if for no other reason than to prove to some women that we do actually watch for the content. The effort of creating content that is compelling. Some take the high road, they focus on the content, not the fancy wrapping. Are they in the wrong for using a proven method of marketing? It is a business decision and that is it. Again, most humans find a female more visually appealing than a male. Don't blame traditional media... I am not debating the power of sex to sell, not debating whether women are nice to look at eitherI am not even debating whether boobs are cool or not (they are of course...I am close personal friends with a certain pair actually) My point is that regardless of how powerful sex can be as a sales tool, as a hook...why do we need to perpetuate it? Especially in a time when we as content creators have the greatest power.Why point at stats and figures and say 'hey it works...' instead of saying 'hm...that really doesn't work, how can we do it different'?
