I was just watching the Henry Rollins video ('cuz I f***in' love Black

the editing is really good... clean and simple.

[videoblogging] Re: Verdi vs MPAA

2006-03-16 Thread Kitka
Good God, I sure hope so. It's about time we stand up for what we
believe in and tell corporate c*nts who don't even care about the
content they're protecting to shove it up their a$$.

Copyrights aside... I think it's more important to set up some online
free system to contact either an individual or a company in order to
facilitate the process of asking to use/sample content. Musicians,
film-makers and artists should all have freely avaliable contact
details (to themselves or an agent). If no contact details are
available on this copyright contact network, we should not be held
liable to be sued. [I _know_ this is a bold statement... but this
subject has driven me to bold beliefs].

I love your Star Trek video, Verdi... I wish I played that when I was
a kid, unfortunately my brother and sister were much older than me and
never wanted to play!

   Hey,
I'm back from SXSW. The Darknets panel was a good and touched on
 some of the
copyright issues. Personally, I think a system where something
 like The
Grey Album is illegal, doesn't work. Now the MPAA (they had a
representative on the panel) and the RIAA still look at this as
 theft. As
long as that's the case, things are not going to change. And they
 certainly
won't listen to me as an individual on the issue. But if people in
 aggregate
willfully disregard these laws where they're just plain stupid, I
 think,
they'll be forced to come up with some sort of solution. Just as
 background
   - I come at this as an artist who very much respects people's
 right to get
paid for their work and on the other hand I also believe that by
contributing to and participating in culture (popular and
 otherwise) you
give up total control over your work. A few years ago I made a
 short film
about my brother and I playing Star Trek as kids (here's the link
 all you
   fellow Star Trek nerds:
   http://www.michaelverdi.com/video/mjplaystartrek.mov). I wrote to
Paramount asking for the right to use the tricorder and
transporter sounds. What I got back from them was a letter
 explaining how I
could not use (with no option to license for a fee) those sounds
 along with
the words Spock, Enterprise or Phaser. I just think that's
 complete
bullshit. We didn't play Star Voyages as kids or run around with
 Quadcorders
or something. It was Star Trek. Those are my memories and this
 film is my
way of remembering. I don't really give a shit if you've
 trademarked that
stuff - it's part of the culture and they've benefited from that
 by both
ripping lots of others off in the ideas behind it and in the
 billions of
dollars they've made because of it.

[videoblogging] Re: Richard's Wife's Reactions to Birthday Vlog is up!

2006-03-15 Thread Kitka
I LOVED watching Maureen's face as she was watching the animated
portions... like Bullemhead. It was almost a sort of confused enjoyment.

I felt strange doing my segment for the mix... does Mrs. Show even
know who I am? Oh well, as long as she enjoys it, who cares...

Happy Birthday again, Maureen.

[videoblogging] Re: Premiere Confusion...HELP?

2006-03-15 Thread Kitka
If I were in your situation, I would Export Movie (project) to .avi,
then once I check to see that the .avi is working properly and it's
the way I want it... I would delete all the clips (your 50 minutes of
footage) and start a new project using the .avi file you just made.

I'm surprised you have that much footage! When I film Kitkast, I end
up with about 50 minutes of footage as well, but my show is 10 minutes
long! I sure hope you're not recording in between takes...

When you trim the footage down in Premiere and delete the unused

entire
piece of video footage, just displaying the parts that you have
decided to
 keep.

I don't think there's a way to delete the unused portion unless you
go ahead
and render what you have now into a new file. Then you can delete
the old
footage, and bring the new file back into Premiere. Just render it at
full-quality so you don't compress it twice.

Dumping
50 mins of footage onto my hard drive has exhausted the free space
I have

 Now,
I've gone and edited down that first 50 to the 3:30 that I really
want to
keep. A bunch of clips got cleared outright, and several others
have been

trimmed down to only a few seconds.

What I'd like to do is clear out everything I'm not using so that
I can
make room for more footage. The problem is...I can't seem to find
a way
to tell Premiere If I've cleared it from the clip listing, and if
I've
trimmed it and put the trimmed stuff on the timeline, delete it.
 It's
making it very hard for me to finish this up because the Premiere
capture

  minutes.

Any help would be appreciated, since I couldn't see anything in
Premiere's

I don't know about a split tool, I would imagine you'll have to use
the razor. So, if you're unsure about the length of a particular

split and shorten. (Who knows, maybe the split tool is the razor I'm

*GAH* *CHOKE* *BLEGH*

Sorry, not a fan of Windows Movie Maker... It's okay for small clips
(as Adam's suggesting), but never use it to compress a full 10-minute
show!!! The first few Kitkast episodes were exported to .wmv via WMM
and the audio would completely unsynchronize from the video after the
first 4 minutes. Only use WMM for short clips and short videoblogs.

see much
of a difference. Capture it at 1.5mbps or so.

Normally, I would. I'm a computer engineer by trade, so this sort of

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this also means buying another
computer. I haven't tried IEEE 1394 external drives, but USB external
drives are too slow to be useful in this situation, and my only
workstation with any real horsepower is a laptop.

I purchased an external hard drive, but I only need it for old
episodes that I filmed on my regular digital camera. Now that I have
a DV Cam, I can just store the tapes... same with you, if you have a
DV Cam, don't worry about a hard drive... you can always burn your
AVIs to DVD anyways.

My plan, in the long run, is to buy a media center PC to hook up
to my
HDTV, soup up the drives on it, and use that as my video workstation in
 addition to other things.

[videoblogging] Re: SF Vloggercon Hotels?

2006-03-14 Thread Kitka
Okay, I just looked up the Vloggercon venue on Google Maps, searched
for hotels in the area and then read the reviews. Here are the three
closest hotels I found:

- Twin Peaks Hotel: 2160 Market St, (415) 863-2909
  Price range: $45-75/night
Pros: REALLY CLOSE, great review, inexpensive, F***ING AWESOME NAME!!!
Cons: No A/C, no online bookings (must call)

- Perramont Hotel: 2162 Market St, (415) 863-3222
  Price range: Unknown
Pros: Also very close to venue,
Cons: Not much information available online (must call)

- Beck's Motel/Motor Lodge: Market St, (415) 621-8212
  Price range: Unknown
Pros: Sometimes dubs as a gay bath house
Cons: Sometimes dubs as a gay bath house, not much information
available online (must call)

Is there anyone who would be able to call the above hotels (among
others in the area) to ask:
- Price range (standard, 1-2 adults per room)
- How many standard rooms are available at the hotel (since there may
be many of us scrambling to get space)
- Whether they would be willing to provide a special rate for
attendees of the Vloggercon

I would call but I'm at work.

I would also be interested in hearing from the Vloggercon organizers
to see if they're already working on having an official hotel where
we can get discounts for attending the Vloggercon. Someone also asked
the other day if other vloggers knew where they were staying... I'd
love to hear what everyone has in mind before I commit.

[videoblogging] Re: SF Vloggercon Hotels?

2006-03-14 Thread Kitka
Thanks Enric, but Devlon, Rudy/CodeRonin and I both want to stay at
hotels in the area so we don't have to rent cars. This is why we're
looking for something in the vacinity of the Vloggercon.

  - Twin Peaks Hotel: 2160 Market St, (415) 863-2909
Price range: $45-75/night
Pros: REALLY CLOSE, great review, inexpensive, F***ING AWESOME
NAME!!!

[videoblogging] Re: SF Vloggercon Hotels?

2006-03-14 Thread Kitka
I've been to (and worked at) quite a few non-vlogger conventions and I
know that usually convention coordinators make deals with a few local
hotels in order to get a group rate for people attending their
convention. It would be highly desireable if the people in charge of
Vloggercon would contact a few hotels in the area in order to make
this possible. That way, we don't have to debate this or get
suggestions right, left and center.

Is Node101 organizing this convention? I would like to see them add
hotel information and special offers to the Vloggercon site to
facilitate our travel plans.

[videoblogging] Re: Top Ten Vlogging Mistakes

2006-03-13 Thread Kitka
Thanks Paul, I agree with you too. In the media world, there IS such
a thing as a cease and desist. I was talking with someone from the
CBC the other day (more about this subject at a later date) and he
told me about how someone was compiling a Top 100 songs list for a
major network he said that they got a cease and desist order from
Leonard Cohen (or some boring musician like that) and they couldn't
use him in the FLATTERING Top 100 show they were making.

Similarly, videobloggers aren't going to instantly get sued for using
copywritten music/content... they will get a cease and desist order
and if they do not comply, they will then be fined or get a court order.

That said, stop worrying so much about it. As long as we all know the
consequences, we can remove certain files from the Internet if they
are problematic. I mean, it's not like you can just call up U2 and
ask if you can use their music!

Personally, I wouldn't use copyrighted material if I were making money
off of it, but if it's all in good fun, I think it's fair to use it.
(I don't see many people complaining about the use of the Brokeback
Mountain song with all the homages like Brokeback to the Future, etc.!)

[videoblogging] Re: ABC News Story

2006-03-10 Thread Kitka

Jon Stewart refers to The Daily Show as faux news too, though he
has some of the best reporting around most of the time.

Well, all news to a certain point is faux (French for false), but John
Stewart is first and foremost a comedian (this is explained on that
fateful episode of CNN's Crossfire). I remember learning this lesson
a long time ago in elementary school when I was told that most news
stories are cut up and pasted together to portray a certain
narrative... heck, a similar but more gruesome idea is even addressed
in George Orwell's Nineteen-Eighty-Four. This is why liberal and
conservative media differ so greatly.

That said, however, I don't see how the validity of Rocketboom differs
from mainstream news. Perhaps it's because RB allows for speculative
news (or buzz), while mainstream news anchors are too scared of
destroying their reputations (remember the Dan Rather debacle?).

If anything, I would say that SNL's Weekend Update is fake/faux news.
The formula of their news stories start by telling the true news and
then leading into a fake story by saying stuff like and in other
news I've done this once on my own show, but that's the only
time I believe I've said something fake.

I may be wrong, but I don't remember one occassion where RB blatently
gave us false information for comedic purposes.

[videoblogging] Re: ABC News Story

2006-03-10 Thread Kitka
You talked about SNL and The Daily Show manipulating the news to
make it humorous. If a reporter is manipulating the news
(under-reporting the popularity of video blogs) for some reason, how
does that make it any different from SNL or The Daily Show? (The only
way it would be different is if the reporter was too clueless to
actually do the research and find out the truth behind the story)
 --
 Bev

Thank for clarifying your last point a bit better, Bev.

The point I was getting to earlier is why does this news anchor claim
that Rocketboom is fake news while _his_ ABC webcast is real news.
The point that you have just made agrees with my prior statement that
all news is fabricated, whether it is comedy or 'reality'. The reason
for this is that reporters take what they want out of a story and
broadcast a fraction of the full picture.

The difference between shows like SNL and this ABC webcast is that SNL
invents stories for comedic purposes, while this ABC reporter is
leaving out vital information explaining why there weren't very many
videoblog downloads last year. I mean, he _could_ have added a
sentence saying something like However, with the growing popularity
of the video iPod and the growing online accessibility of vlogs from
places like iTunes, videoblog downloads in 2006 are _sure_ to overtake
any numbers from previous years.

Instead... he just made it look like videoblogs were unpopular and
that it's best to just sit back and watch television. My best
explanation for WHY he reported the story in this fashion is that
although ABC has an online webcast, they fear that television
as-we-know-it will become extinct. When I was talking with a CBC
reporter the other day, he said that he is terribly fearful that the
mainstream media will fall behind and die... this is a fear shared by
many in the mainstream.

2006-03-10 Thread Kitka
--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I used to think this. But I'm getting away from it now. I like long
videos if they are compelling. Drivetime is a good one that is long,
as is The Pan. Nathan Miller has been posting 10 minute episodes
lately and it's still not long enough for my wife, who is not a
techie or a big vlog watcher. Also I wish This or That would stop
cutting up theirs into 5 minute chunks and post entire shows. But
maybe it's a bandwidth issue for them. And I've been toying with the
idea of switching to a longer format too.

As someone who posts 10-13 minute episodes/week, I can see the
positive angle of having shorter posts. Although it's nice to have a
show format, some people don't like downloading such large files... I
know a lot of technophobes who freak out when they notice something
downloading to their computer without their permission. As a result,
I think it's easier to reach a wider audience if you have a shorter
vlog.

I also think that the demand for longer video blog posts will go up
as more people start to watch them on their TV's--and that's
starting to happen as more people plug Mac Minis and Windows Media
 Centers into their tubes.

I agree... I'm sure the demand will go up as more people start to
watch them on their TVs, but a few problems we will face is hosting,
size/speed of download and content (with amateur video, it's more
entertaining to deliver a certain amount of content in a smaller
period of time than to drag it out... only Sergio Leone truly knew how
to drag out the moment without boring people to death!).

It would really suck if videoblogs became so lengthy that they started
being more like podcasts... two guys talking about stuff and drinking
beers in front of a camera. I think part of the attraction of
videoblogs is that they _are_ usually quite brief and to the point
(not unlike Samurai doctrine). Perhaps once advertizing makes more of
its way into videoblogging there will be more of a demand (and a
realistically funded way) to create longer shows.

The hardest part of making my show so long is not the amount of work
that is involved... it's that I have to work a full time job to
support the 'hobby'. If funding was provided, making a longer show
would be easy.

[videoblogging] Hosting Ideas?

2006-03-02 Thread Ms. Kitka
Hey all,

I currently have a LibSyn account and it seems like they've changed
some policies without telling me so I'm not too happy with their
service at the moment. I'm considering moving to another host, but
have a few criteria:

- Need between 90MB-150MB of storage per week... at most 675MB/month
(I currently use about 100MB storage per week, but it would be nice to
have room to grow);
- Able to host mutiple file types (QT, Windows Media, etc.);
- Unlimited bandwidth;
- Fast download/upload (wide pipe);
- Reliable stats;
- Please don't bother suggesting Blip, YouTube, Archive.org/OurMedia, etc.

Let me know if you have any professional suggestions.

Thank you,
Kitka

[videoblogging] Re: OT-Torino Olympic Closing Ceremony

2006-02-28 Thread Ms. Kitka
I didn't see the closing ceremonies but I was blown away by the
opening ceremonies (partly because some of it reminded me of my
favorite sci-fi film, Logan's Run). Although I was very impressed, I
can help but be reminded of the sheer number of people out there in

[videoblogging] Re: When video services scale up your videos dimensions

2006-02-27 Thread Ms. Kitka
I think the videos should be shown at whatever size they were made...
things are going to change in the near future and these sites will
have problems if they choose to control the size of video.

Rumours are circulating that the NEW video iPod will be 16:9, so I
have no doubt that more people will be making videoblogs in
widescreen. I've been thinking of this for a while, but I've decided
that I need to invest in a background first! Rocketboom has just
started broadcasting in widescreen with their new HD cam, so as more
and more people do this (I'm sure RB's not the first), aggregators
will just have to adjust.

Resistance is futile... you will comply.

[videoblogging] Adult vlogging revenues (was Re: echoes of FEM)

2006-02-24 Thread Ms. Kitka
You're half right, Stephanie, I do dress in lingerie and read the news
but it's usually not AVN... it's mostly mainstream sources like
Reuters, BBC and the New York Times. These are all stories covered by
the mainstream, I just happen to be sarcastic about it and wear about
as much clothing as someone playing beach volleyball (perhaps even
more!). I agree that my content is explicit (I've used the F-word a
couple of times), but the delivery of it is not adult.

I have no interest in venturing into the realm of subscriptions or
removing my clothing and becoming a porn star/erotic model. I
wouldn't mind doing a Women of Vlogging spread in Maxim, but I have
no desire to become the next Jenna Jameson. I also recently removed
all banner advertizing from my site (Google AdSense, Amazon
Associates), I don't want any annoying banner ads to ruin the
experience of coming to my site to watch the show.

When I started Kitkast I just wanted to make a video extension of my
sex blog which dealt with censorship, religious intolerance and the
government. If/when I allow video advertising on my show I would
prefer that the ads were non-pornographic. People don't keep watching
the show for porn, they watch it for the comedy and tittilation... and
I have made a concious choice never to show nudity (although, in
episode 1.15 I showed nude paintings in an art gallery... nothing you
wouldn't see on PBS!).

Don't get me wrong, I do have plans in the works... but when I first
started Kitkast I had no intention of making any money. The only
reason I would like to make any money now is so that I don't have to
work 35 hours a week at my regular office job and 25 hours a week on
Kitkast. As you've seen in Four Eyed Monsters, the stress can really
hit hard on our personal relationships.

I appreciate your input, but please understand that I have no desire
to become heavily associated with porn. I would, however, love to
become heavily associated with sci-fi... ;)

[videoblogging] Creative Commons Video Inserts?

2006-02-23 Thread Ms. Kitka
I've been impressed at the way some people put Creative Licenses on
their videos and was wondering if there is a place to find good
quality open source versions of them. Michael Verdi had a nice one at
the end of his father's vlog that I was drooling over and I'm sure
most people make them themselves.

I spent a couple of hours fiddling with my outro the other night to
make a nice new Creative Commons video clip that includes the symbols
of Attribution, No Money and Share Alike... is there a place to find
and use these already made or do we just have to do it all ourselves?

It would be nice if Creative Commons could make some kind of standard
for us to use if we want to...

emWhat's in a name? A videoblog by any other name would still have

- Kitka Shakespeare, 2006 A.C.E.

To me videoblogging has more to do with the video being available via
RSS... this is what truly sets it apart from regular video on the web.
The blog is simply something that facilitates its distribution/broadcast.

When it comes down to it, most of my viewers have never seen my web

Kitka
http://www.kitkast.com/

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

This is an interesting question. And it kinda goes to my own working
definitions that I've expressed here before. I don't happen to
believe that videoblogs are defined by content as much as
methodology. A videoblog to me is simply video on a blog. That is
video posted in a blog format, which is a regularly updated website
where content is posted in cronological dated posts. It may or may
not have an RSS feed, comments, a blog roll etc. But it always has
chronological dated posts on a web page. Thus the name Web Log. The
whole personal vs show thing to me is kind of a weird way of looking
at it. The first blogs I read were political blogs and they most
certainly weren't personal journals. I understand that the personal
journals, that a lot of people understand blogs to be, are a genre
of the form, but I wouldn't ever say that a defining characteristic
of a blog is that it's personal. So to my thinking if a video blog
is simply video on a blog then it's not necessarily personal. To me
saying a blog or a videoblog is by definition personal is like
saying TV is all sitcoms or all films are documentaries. A blog is a
media form, and that form has genres, personal, political, artistic
etc. The beauty being (which is kind of the beauty of the Internet
as a whole) is that it's simple for any individual to do without
much help or particular technical expertise, and that makes personal
 forms or genres possible.

The other thing that I've been thinking about recently is if there
is or isn't a difference between a videoblog or a video podcast. And
this is what I've been thinking: if we accept the premise that a
videoblog is simply video on a blog and we say that a video podcast
is the same as a videoblog then conversely a podcast is the same as
a blog. Well, we know that that's not true. What we know (or at
least the way I see it) a podcast is simply multimedia distributed
via a rss feed. So accepting this definition then a video blog can
also be a video podcast, or not if it is video posted in blog form
sans an RSS feed. Also a person can post video to the internet
outside of the blog form but still deliver it on an RSS feed. This
would be a video podcast that isn't also video blog.

So if you accept these definitions (and I'm not saying that you have
to) then what the people from Four Eyed Monsters are doing is not
video bogging, but video podcasting—since they are primarily
publishing video via an RSS feed sans the blog form. They do have
blogs, but on Myspace, and that's not where their video feeds are
 posted.

So those are my thoughts. It's not something that I feel is set in
stone, but that's just where my head is at with it at the moment.

I guess it's possible... if I had a budget to work with I would
purchase an HD camera too. I look forward to seeing tomorrow's show
just to see whether this large size will be a daily occurance or just

Alternatively: Perhaps after seeing their show on CSI, they decided to
make their site look more like the CSI-Rocketboom site... larger

[videoblogging] Re: Consumers Crave Web-Based TV

2006-02-16 Thread Ms. Kitka
This is the exact same subject I was going to approach after Bill
posted the survey showing that people prefer watching video on their
television screens. The whole thing makes sense because you get to
sit on a comfy couch and the video takes up the whole screen... who
WOULDN'T want to watch all their favorite shows like that...

As someone raised on Star Trek, though, I understand that we must find
a way (besides TiVo, which is not available up here in Canada) to make
it easier to place our favorite web-based content on our big screen TVs.

[I wrote a whole bunch of other stuff here, but I ended up just
babbling.] The truth is, we basically have all the technology we need
right now... we just need:

a) someone to explain exactly how to set everything up or someone to
put out a product that will open internet content to our television
screens;
b) to make sure our videoblogs are good quality so that they look and
sound alright when they're blown up to fit our TV screens.

I'm needed on the bridge,
Kitka out.

Points North: Consumers Crave Web-Based TV by Gavin O'Malley,
Wednesday, Feb

content available on consumers' TV screens as well as their PCs.
That's the
conclusion of new Points North Group research to be released today,
which
found that while 25 percent of Internet users are interested in watching
downloaded TV shows and movies on their PCs, 38 percent expressed
interest
in watching that same video on their TVs.

Getting Web-based content to the TV should be the industry's
primary goal
and will unlock by far the biggest revenue opportunities, Stewart
Wolpin,
senior consulting analyst for Points North Group, said in a statement.

Interest in watching content on TV is even stronger among 18-

interested in
watching on PCs--concluded the study, conducted in association with

So, if this many people are making videoblogs about those who choose
to be A-holes on this message board, why aren't we doing something
more? Shouldn't the administrator set some boundaries and kick off
those who choose to attack others? I sure think so.

The reason these people are making videos outlining the frustration of

they brought it up in a post here.

I propose change... Vive la revolution, and all that.

them as an experiment. They are apparently testing everything with
Rocketboom (technologically) and once it is up and running, TiVo may
add more videoblogs. Andrew spoke about this in his interview with
Business Week (the podcast).

There is an increasing demand for Mobile content, but my show is too
large for people to download to their cell. My boyfriend and I are in
the process of mobile-ifying our web sites to make them accessible to
mobile phones, though. My new site design will launch this weekend.

I think the problem with PSP is the limited storage space. We have
considered making Kitkast available for PSP, but I think it also has a
16:9 screen and we don't have a PSP to test it out on, so the idea is
on the back burner.

iTunes is definitely a link to have if you want a broad audience...
more than 90% of my subscribers watch the show from iTunes. I was a
little surprised the other day, though, when RB added an iTunes link
under their embedded video... I wonder if other sites like FireAnt and
MeFeedia will be shaking their fists at the link.

My two cents,
Kitka

 Obviously, Rocketboom is off running.

I noticed Rocketboom has several links for various distribution
 mediums for their content:

 quicktime | win | torrent | phone | psp | tivo | itunes

The phone, psp, itunes are of interest to me, because they are
portable devices w/video capability. I am interested in these new
mediums as part of the Content/Distribution model. For the iPod/
iTunes is especially exciting, with 42 million out there (
counting). It has an *established* distribution network of iTunes
Music Store (w/revenue-stream). It has a LOT of visibility, is
popular with young generation (hip/fashionable/cool device). Guess
Jeans is making iPod compatible jeans, automobile mfrs are making
their radios iPod compatible (Mercedes, Toyota, Chrysler, Ford).
 What about:

 - cellphone (lot of activity, for streaming video: TV Internet)
 - PSP (has WiFi capability, for Web access)

Are these emerging giants as part of the Video on Demand
revolution, where you can see video-content on a portable device?
Call it Agile/Mobile/Hostile (a term from Football, that describes a
 linebacker).

Rocketboom have given us some amazing tips for videoblogging, yet
people are greedy and want to know private information? I'm not about
to tell anyone what MY paycheck is at my day job, so why should RB
have to explain themselves on every little detail?

I think that it's good that RB keep an air of mystery about their
earnings and source of income. After all, salaries are often a cause
for jealousy in the workplace... and we already have enough jealous
and hurtful people ready to pounce here on this message board.

Welcome to the public eye is not a justifiable reason for the
attacks, this is supposed to be a videoblogging group, not an RB hate
group.

Can't we all just... get along?

[videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom Changes?

2006-02-07 Thread Ms. Kitka
I'm assuming that Andrew set a reserve beyond any expectation (one
ludicrously high such that it cannot be met) to give him discretion over
accepting a bidder. Note the terms: he reserves the right to refuse any
bidder. Yet, had a bidder won, he would have entered into an
agreement --
via ebay -- whereupon he would have to deliver the ads. This gives him
 discretion.

 (speculation)

Well, $15,000 isn't a lot of money for a high profile show like
Rocketboom. As Andrew has previously mentioned, RB has already been
talking about CPMs from $50-150. If this is so, why would RB submit
to such a low paycheck when they're already having offers of much more?

I've done the math before:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/33287

If you take the minimum $50 CPM, that makes $50,000/week. Doesn't it
make $15,000 look like charity?

[videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom Changes?

2006-02-07 Thread Ms. Kitka
I'd be interested to see what the CPMs are like for ads playing on MSN
Video before news segments. There must be a market out there that
already has a set CPM rate, but the cost is probably similar to
advertising on television because sites like MSN are gargantuan!
Still, that does not negate the value of RB since CPMs work
proportionately to your audience size.

Besides, how do you put a value on ad space in videoblogs? Audio
podcast time isn't as valuable because you can make an audio show that
goes on for one hour... but video space is more valuable because of
how quickly the size of the show escalates. It's hard to compress a
show to a reasonable size and keep it looking good.

A 30-second ad at the end of a 3 minute show like RB is a considerable
size... so why not demand high CPMs? What Andrew is doing now is
setting the market for the future of videoblogging. Let's watch, see
what happens and offer our assistance when needed... this is what the
community should be.

Kitka

Andrew thinks the show is worth $50 - $150, that doesn't make it so

price is much lower than $50. Andrew believes that RB-type of video
is a whole new market that hasn't had a price set for it yet (please
 correct me if I'm wrong).

That's the purpose of an auction, it creates the price. The price is
what the market decides it wants to pay for it. Of course, Andrew
doesn't have to accept whatever this price turns out to be.

The wording on the article is confusing:
 ===
Two online auctions are underway to set the price of podcast
advertising. They are being conducted by Podtrac, an advertising sales
network, and the producers of Rocketboom, a three-minute daily
 videoblog of news and comment.
 ===

But what I gather it means is there are TWO online auctions:

   1) Podtrac, an advertising sales network
  and
   2) The producers of Rocketboom, a three-minute daily videoblog of
 news and comment

Not that Podtrac is producting Rocketboom, but that the producers of
Rocketboom have an online auction (which has been discussed a bit.)

[videoblogging] Re: yes another video ipod question

2006-02-03 Thread Ms. Kitka
Definitely vlog in .mov, I HATE when people restrict their content to
.m4v. I blame Steve Jobs for the evil .m4v files of the world...

charltonheston Damn him, damn him to HELL!!! /charltonheston

The only good thing about .m4v is that they tend to look better if you
want to save them as .avi and incorporate them into your project.
That's the only exception to my distaste for .m4v

Yes .MOV will play on iPods as long as they are encoded to the
correct specs (mp4 or h.264 with aac audio). Mp4 work fine but I see
no benefit to posting them rather than .mov. It caused me more
problems. There aren't that many more players that can play mp4s and
I've never been able to get them to play as they download like
a .MOV does. Yes you file must be h.264 or .mp4 to work on an ipod
(movs can be encoded with these). Also the M4V extension is just
another extension for MP4. You can change the extension to .MP4 and
 it will work just fine.

my videos to there ipods without having to convert it.

Now I now on the apple site it says this:

  * By following the steps in this tutorial, QuickTime 7 Pro will
automatically create an .m4v file containing H.264 video and AAC
audio. iPod can play the following video formats:
  * H.264 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per
 second,
Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio
  * MPEG-4 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per
 second,
  Simple Profile
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio

So if you have .mov can it be downloaded to an Ipod?

Or do the users have to convert the .mov into mp4 to use it iPod?

If your file format is not H.264 or MPEG-4 then it won't work on
 the
  ipod?

I guess you can save .mov file in different file formats other than
H.264 or MPEG-4. Is this true?

What are the draw backs of using a .mp4 file on your vlog?

  Thanks for your time.

Oh. I'm thinking about getting a mac so i will be using iMovie to

Word. Everyone keeps telling me that I should buy a Mac... as if
working on a superpowerful Dell PC is a bad thing. Apparently, Robert
Rodriguez works on a PC, so that makes me feel a little less like an
outcast.

The reason I hate .m4v files so much is for the sole reason that the
default settings opens it in iTunes. For the last time, Mr. Jobs, I
DON'T WANT TO USE iTUNES TO WATCH VIDEO CONTENT!!!

about what's been up with me lately in relation to videoblogging.

My downward slide started with my most recent videoblogging
presentation at the apple store. The girl before me teaches
   iTunes,
and last time they gave me a pretty good lead-in... she had about
twenty people standing around listening to her, and instead of a
lead-in, when she was done she said thanks for coming and
   basically
walked away. Everyone left. After that, I suppose I wasn't
interesting enough to attract more than one or two random people

were walking through the store. Afterwards she apologized to me--
   she
said she didn't realize I was up next--but it didn't matter. For
   some
stupid reason, I let that day crush me almost to the point of
   tears.

They had said they wanted to videoblogging thing to be a once-a-
   month
gig--great, no problem. Then I got an email saying that February
   was
pushed away from me because of some special presentation on my
Saturday. Then I got an email a couple weeks ago saying the
   manager
wanted to make my class half iLife--fine, I can learn that, or
   someone
else can teach it. Then I got another email this week saying they
want me to run my presentation pretty much just on the Mac
   platform.
My fault, I guess, for thinking I belonged in an Apple store. I
haven't replied to their email, and don't think I will either.

Videoblogging has been a love-hate thing with me. I love to
do it,
but I hate the fact that it's hard to find people in my area
that I
can hang out with, that I can discuss videoblogging with. They're
just not here. Sure--I have my new friend Greta--and she's having
   fun
with it, making maybe a post a week--but the passions not there,
know what I mean? Plus--she's on a Mac. It's like Spain Spanish
   and
Mexican Spanish. We share a similar interest, but not a similar
   platform.

Then I decided to sell my Sony M1 camera on ebay. I upgrade my
   camera
about once a year--but this was the first time I ever decided to
   take
the leap into the miniDV realm. My cam sold for about $100 less
   than
I hoped--which is pretty much my fault, I guess--and I bought a
   Canon
ZR600, which at first glance was a great improvement... until
my PC
crashed, and crashed, and crashed. From reformatting my hard
drive
and rebuilding windows, to swapping out firewire cards and hard
drives, we'd tried just about everything... then last night, my
three-day-old camcorder's screen turned black

When it comes to meeting other vloggers, I think I've met a total of
one, Brett from Etherworks. What I want to do, though, is everytime I
go on vacation to a major city, try and set up some kind of metup
(preferably karaoke with the vloggers or something about as fun... I
put on a hell of an air guitar show). I'll probably go to New York,
LA and perhaps Edinburgh this year, so I'll post a notice probably a
month before just to see if anyone else is interested. I also hope to
attend conferences this year (something I totally missed out on last
year since I was/am a newbie).

Don't worry, Susan, you'll meet us all someday. Have you tried to
build a community in your area? Why not put an ad out saying you'll
help anyone out who is interested in starting to vlog?

Yours,
Kitka
