Kristoff,

I just checked my first saved mail from this list and it was from May of
2000.

Guess that still makes me a newbiegrin.

I see Zundfolge(Jim) every once in awhile. He is doing well and working
on several projects.

I am doing the same, but have trimmed my stable a little cause I just
couldn't keep up with what I had.

One other thing I failed to mention is that I remember when I first signed

still boots up however the hard drive fails to be recognized. I know when
we converted to using the PC, the Amiga had emails on it from the PINE email

Thanks for the kind words Asad. :) I saw many bay windows Kombis there (as
they call them) with roo bars on them. Probably more kangaroos there than
there are deer over here. At anyrate, it was really weird seeing RHD VWs
all over and man did I ever want to take them home. What a novelty! I just
can't get used to shifting with the left hand and shoving the gear shift up
and away from me...it doesn't feel right. Take a look at my pix at
www.nqvw.com/australia and you'll see a 1968 auto-stick that I got to sit
in. I had a very hard time getting in and out of it because my muscle
memory works only for the driver's side. It was still neat to see the works
on the left side and the KPH speedo - all those things that are so rare back
home and here they were all over the place.

I always wanted to take a bug or a splitty bus and put BOTH LHD and RHD
workings in it. Then you would have the ultimate traveling vehicle.
Someone could be driving from either side. And in the event of a bus, you
could take a nap or get up and walk to the back while your relief driver
came and take over. You'd have dual pods, dual speedometers, etc. I think
it's quite doable with just a few minor modifications.

I think Erin has a good point,

We all now take the www for granted now. Casually browsing thru we dont
remember days only a few years ago when VW knowledge could only be tapped from
book/mags or local eccentric old timers who talked only after a lot of
pampering.

I remember my brother (Suleman aka Suley) joining the list.I think
this was in the early or mid nineties. I have no idea how he came to know of
this list. I do remember him asking questions and then relaying all the
showered wisdom via letters (good old snail mail) or on the phone. Back then he
was studying in a city far from our home town. Still have his old letters, one
of which describes in detail how to deal with a broken clutch pedal cable hook.
Helped me come out of the lurch I was in after the pedal went free in the
driveway.

Best regards to all,

United States, it seems all we hear about Pakistan and countries in this

It's nice to know that there are still many kind and normal people who are

Ah so I do see you are a RHD country! Your English is really good too.
How'd you learn to type it so well?

I guess for anyone, it's what they are used to growing up with. I find that
since I'm a right handed person, that I can find the little notches for the
gear shift pattern easier. Steering is such a general analog function that
my sloppy left hand is good enough to steer with. I found in Australia I
couldn't get in an out of the right hand side because the steering wheel was
in the way! And the toyota I was driving had first gear clear over away
from me. I like having the most commonly used gears closer to me so I'm not
having to reach over all the time. I never did break the habit of turning
on the windshield wipers every time I wanted to signal my turn. LOL!

Erin,

You are most welcome!

its interesting to note the novelty of RHD dubs for you guys. For us the
opposite is true, Pakistan being a RHD country. A LHD VW or any vehicle is
interesting here. I cannot imagine how I would be able to shift with my
right hand!

Last week I saw this 68 bug that had been driven over from Germany by
the original owner. It was still in original paint, though very faded and
needing touch ups on the fenders. It had a factory steel sunroof and front
Disc brakes something uncommon here. I examined it in detail and for the
first time saw the special fuel tank vent hose which was found on only the
early 68s. My daily driven 68 is supposed to have that vent but the pipe and
all hardware is missing. My other 68 has the later style tank with the vapor
vent on the RHS near the filler hose.

I was thinking of changing the tank to a later one.original one
requires me to open the trunk and pop the vent open manually to let the
displaced air escape on fill ups...even got a good one from the
junkyardbut now Im double minded. Its one of the things I point out to
puzzled friends who claim that ''all beetles look the same''. I show them
ten differences between the two 68 bugs!

A VDub with twin steerings n pedals...hmmm...why hasnt someone done it
still??

Asad.

Suleman is doing well,

He is still in California, driving Mercs instead of VDubs. Well at least
he has not gone off German metal. He is still a listee but nowadays just lurks
due to lack of time. Im hoping he'd read these posts and chip in.

Im glad that you saw the pictures and read the text too with deep
interest. I think you have gathered that 'chotas' is a term for apprentices. In
Urdu, the local language 'chota' means small/little/young. Apprentices are
casually referred to as chotas and called by that title.

Yes VWs have universal appeal. I have lately noticed most if not all
young kids stare at my daily driven 68 with wide eyes, often smiling and
excitedly gathering the attention of their parents towards the car. I always
think of one thing. Its a pity that VWs are a rare sight for these kids. But at
the same time their enthusiasm inspires me to continue with the passion. A
smiling kid makes for an extra reward.

The Government here passed a rule designed to take offroad the ageing
commercial vehicles. Those are badly maintained and contribute to a lot of
problems, pollution, accidents, unsafe interiors etc. Unfortunately there was a
rumor that the privately owned older models (pre 70 0r 74 I think) would be
taken offroad too. Then came the banks with their car leasing schemes. Every
Tom, Dick and Harry drove out a brand new Toyota, Honda or Suzuki from the
showroom. High fuel prices didnt help either. A Beetle is considered heavy on
petrol here. Reason being the competition from tiny 800cc unsafe matchbox cars
so popular.

And now they say that the will start annual checkups for emissions and
all. Implementation remains difficult.

Still we hope for the best.

Good to note that you plan to be faithful to Li'l Red forever.

Asad.

Suleman! What is he doing now? Hope everything is fine with him. I went
back and looked at your pictures of the Australian bug rescue with the
chotas looking on. It just tells me that the VW is a vehicle with universal
appeal. It's a shame that governments with their red tape and greed want to
remove these old vehicles. Yeah they don't meet emissions however, they do
use less fuel and catalytic convertors could be designed to help with the
problems. I still don't see any other vehicle being produced that I'd want
to own with one exception - the Smart Car from Mercedes - I love the idea
of increased fuel mileage and a vehicle that is even smaller yet than the
bug. I'm still a VW man and really, as I get older, I fully expect to be
the only left in my county who is actively driving them. If I live to !
be 80, that would mean my Li'l Red would be 77 years old. I plan on keeping
him that long - he's a darn good little car. Erin

Erin!

Im delighted you like the pictures. Hope the other listees do too.

Its amazing how a quaint little car acts as an Ambassador of Peace!

I understand that with what the media projects its only normal for the
rest of the world to imagine the worst. Ive heard of people asking if we ride
on Camels instead of driving cars!

In fact the people and places in this region are what anyone would
consider quite normal. I wish we project ourselves better. Its the few bad
apples which make the whole basketload look offensive.

We have many issues like poverty, lack of awareness and above all a very
negative influence by the Mullahs (clergy) in general. These idiots are
responsible for painting a very negative picture of the West in the eyes of the
common gullible masses. They have their own nefarious desires and aim to win
support so that they are brought to power.

Then there are the politicians. Almost all if not all, corrupt to the
core. We have seen what democracy means for our country. It may be the best
thing for the educated and enlightened West but our masses are just gullible
simpletons in general. Everyone comes to power with the intention of making hay
while the sun shines. They are the ones who turn perfectly sane people into
'animals who shoot each other'!

I think every society has its highs and lows. As Bill has also pointed
out with an example. My one year stay in the UK taught me many things. The
British have good as well as bad points. They are polite, respectful and very
helpful in things like guiding you to some place etc. But then they will not
help a man in distress. I witnessed a middle aged man collapse at a bus stand
but no one came even near him. I helped him and everyone stared at me in
disbelief. Thats just an experience. But then maybe one event is not sufficient
to form an opinion.

There are a lot of people doing a lot of things just to make themselves
look important. I think the common man in America has been made to think that
the war on terror is something essential for them to exist. A lot of conspiracy
theories suggest a different story. I dont think the blood of innocent young
soldiers justifies the search for the apparition Osama Bin Laden seems to be.

Im glad the www helps us see that differences only add to the interesting
myriad and not as a means of division. At the end of the day we all are humans.
We have people here (including myself) who cried seeing the images of 9-11.
People jumping off a skyscrapper holding hands.what choice did they
have?.. To die another way?..what was their fault???

 Indeed food for thought.

 Wishing sanity would prevail.

Asad.

Hey there Brian. Thanks for replying. Life has been busy and wraught with
ups and downs for me but I'm still around. I remember the glory days of
 the
list and I'm surprised that as dead as it is, that it's still up!

I look back and can't believe that it's been 12 years since the New Beetle
came out. I remember the Concept 1 as it was named was the 'in'
collectible. It's neat to see too that you got ahold of a new beetle and
put that kind of mileage on it. I kind of like the idea of getting a good
used diesel one and doing the bio-diesel conversion. Seems to me like it
would be a lot of fun to travel all over and do it for cents on the dollar
while everyone else is lamenting fuel prices. :)

Concerning the jets for the 34-pict-3. I know for a fact that jets wear
over time. I don't know if this is something that can be adjusted out with
the mixture screws or not but I thought when I get Li'l Red into the shop
I'm so desperately trying to finish up, I want to rebuild the carb and do
 it
right. I'm sure that will take care of some of my runability issues.

Glad to hear that you're going to be getting the 73 out and about after 8
years. I'm still driving and using Li'l Red and it shows somewhat. The
engine is still the same one I had in when I was more active on the list
 and
the engine has only been out twice during that time. I'm even on the same
clutch disc and when I inspected it back in May of 2004, it still looked
great. The engine is a little tired too and it struggles to maintain 65
sometimes but I think a tune-up will help that. I'm also going to install
 a
good used intake manifold as my heat riser is completely plugged and I get
carb icing on cooler days. I figure while I'm doing that, I'll put on a
fresh set of dual port heads and get these old ones rebuilt and keep them
for a spare. I remember someone saying the service life on these heads was
about 30,000 miles and I'm sure I'm waay over that. I'm going to try
and get this all done before Enid gets here (my Bribane girl) and what I
don't get done, she'll help me with because right now, the bug is all I
 got
running. I haven't run my bus in a long time. I parked it primarily
because the Weber carbs I had on it had a barrel that wouldn't tune up
properly and made #3 run lean which it runs hot anyway. I've since gotten
dual kads with chokes and need to get them on so I'll be pulling the
 engine
and redoing a ton of stuff on it one of these days. First things first. :)
But yeah, while the bus was running, I had it up to 82mph downhill and
 with
the wind at my back. Normally I'd cruise 65 but hit 70 quite a bit. I'm a
ripe old 36 now and I'm finding that the stock package is sounding better
all the time. I actually have a set of stock rims and tires and I still
have the original 67 trans and redux boxes so if I wanted to put it
 together
as a stocker, I'd be able to maintain my 65mph all day long. :) The engine
package I'd really love to run would be a large displacement Type 1 with a
single carburetor and enlarged dual port center section. I know I'd loose
some power but I'd gain that low-end torque. I'd like a choke too. I
remember trying to start my bus on a 50 degree day - it wouldn't happen
 and
winters were a joke. Dual webers are NOT the carb to use on a midwest
vehicle that is driven in the winter and cooler days. I love the sound of
those webers but they're coming off and I'll never run them again as long
 as
 I live here.

I'd be interested in the Disc Brake conversion for my '73 SB. I hope you
keep the list informed of your progress.

I sure will Brian.'m trying to think where I got them. I have the box
here but I never opened it. I think I got everything from John Connolly at
aircooled.net - yep indeed I did. I'm putting front discs on and since
 John
said rear discs on a beetle are a joke on a stock setup, I'm putting the
super stopper pads and WCs on the back.

I noticed after 9/11, things went downhill pretty quick. Internet was new
and the newfound forums and communication medium was all the rage. It was
new and exciting, there were still quite a few VWs out there and people
willing to get online and read up all about them. There weren't any
webforums to speak of and you still had to be technically savvy to get
signed up on the list. (you

Yeah Dennis I remember that when Jeremy did the church choir thing! He went
through here and performed at a church in Aurora, NE. He stayed here at our
house for a day and back then, we were looking for a place to hold a
nationwide VW gathering. Well it never panned out but I still remember the
topics as being BIE98 with hopes of holding it here in Beatrice in the
center of the USA. That same weekend Jeremy and his friend were here, we
had a big snow and I was trying to show him and his friend Indian Lake Rec
area down by Wymore, NE. As we drove along this 2 lane road, there were
abandoned cars all over it and it hit me that these cars were snowed in the
week before. We went through a snowdrift that had been plowed through and
the walls were taller than my 71 Westy! That same trip I had an oil bottle
melt and dump oil into my heating system and we fogged out the back of the
bus. Ah memories! LOL!

In a way, I'm glad for those who sort of moved on and now have families
and such. As for myself, I suffered massive PTSD/Depression issues since
9/11 and have had to reinvent myself numerous times.
Through it all, I *NEVER* lost my zest for the air-cooled VWs and still,
just as it was then, I only like to drive air-cooled VWs. Jeremy still is
gung-ho for them too. Back then in the late 90s, the net was new and a lot
of people jumped on the bandwagon. I'm sure some people enjoyed having an
ego and being admired, others were wannabees, and still others probably
wrote it off as a passing fancy. I'm still NQ and still drive air-cooleds
and maybe before long, I'll have a wife who is ACVW the whole way too. :)

Nice to see some of you are still around and on the list. I'll be pulling
my engine in Li'l Red in a couple months and redoing the front suspension so
if I get enough people interested, I'd gladly post pictures.

Erin, I'm glad to hear you're still here. I'm a relative newbie, having
only been here about 6 or 7 years, but have always enjoyed, and remember
well, the stories of LIL RED! :) You, and the other long-timers, have been
an inspiration for me, and I have learned so much from the list's existence.
I currently have running an '81 Westy, and absolutely love it. Air Cooled
all the way! I'm working on, intermittently, a '75 Beetle that has been
changed over to dual Kads. It's SO CLOSE to being finished, but too many
Honey-Do's get in the way. :) With Court's help, (Hint, hint... Court) :)
, it'll be on the road this year. OKAY, I've said it, so I'll have to make
it come true.

I've been interested in VW's since very young, having a wonderful Tequila
filled ride home by my aunt, remembering every nauseated/painful corner in
her Beetle (not sure what year, but still had the auxiliary tank switch),
and helping my sister fire up her 70Something Westy after having spent a
week in Prince George during an Arctic front, with -40 degree temps. We had
to use a propane campstove, electric heating pad, and a long extension cord
to get it going. :) Talk about being inventive.

Four kids and a wife don't fit well in a Westy, so I waited until it is just
the two of us, with an occasional grandchild or Mother-in-law, to get my
'81, and have made some pretty major trips in it. One, with the MIL to
Saskatchewan, and then back through MT, ID, and WA, and last year down the
coast to Northern CA, and back up the interior.

My air cooled '81 has climbed the most incredible mountains, albeit slowly,
and has only let me down through a fried rectifier, and a dieing Pertronix
(both owner diagnosed, and repaired the same day - the rectifier with help
from a small alternator shop in Pt. Townsend). Other than that, it has been
superb, and I look forward to many other adventures in my air-cooled COW
(Condominum-on-Wheels) ( with thanks to Joe Crocket for that acronym).

Keep L'il Red going. Hope to meet you someday, NQ.

melt and dump oil into my heating system and we fogged out the back of the

Back then in the late 90s, the net was new and a
 lot
of people jumped on the bandwagon.

I'll be pulling
my engine in Li'l Red in a couple months and redoing the front suspension
 so
if I get enough people interested, I'd gladly post pictures.

Thanks for writing - nice to hear from some of the old die-hards! :)

Hey there Brian. Thanks for replying. Life has been busy and wraught with
ups and downs for me but I'm still around. I remember the glory days of the

I'm so desperately trying to finish up, I want to rebuild the carb and do it
right. I'm sure that will take care of some of my runability issues.

Glad to hear that you're going to be getting the 73 out and about after 8
years. I'm still driving and using Li'l Red and it shows somewhat. The
engine is still the same one I had in when I was more active on the list and
the engine has only been out twice during that time. I'm even on the same
clutch disc and when I inspected it back in May of 2004, it still looked
great. The engine is a little tired too and it struggles to maintain 65
sometimes but I think a tune-up will help that. I'm also going to install a
good used intake manifold as my heat riser is completely plugged and I get
carb icing on cooler days. I figure while I'm doing that, I'll put on a
fresh set of dual port heads and get these old ones rebuilt and keep them
for a spare. I remember someone saying the service life on these heads was
about 30,000 miles and I'm sure I'm waay over that. I'm going to try
and get this all done before Enid gets here (my Bribane girl) and what I
don't get done, she'll help me with because right now, the bug is all I got
running. I haven't run my bus in a long time. I parked it primarily
because the Weber carbs I had on it had a barrel that wouldn't tune up
properly and made #3 run lean which it runs hot anyway. I've since gotten
dual kads with chokes and need to get them on so I'll be pulling the engine
and redoing a ton of stuff on it one of these days. First things first. :)
But yeah, while the bus was running, I had it up to 82mph downhill and with
the wind at my back. Normally I'd cruise 65 but hit 70 quite a bit. I'm a
ripe old 36 now and I'm finding that the stock package is sounding better
all the time. I actually have a set of stock rims and tires and I still
have the original 67 trans and redux boxes so if I wanted to put it together
as a stocker, I'd be able to maintain my 65mph all day long. :) The engine
package I'd really love to run would be a large displacement Type 1 with a
single carburetor and enlarged dual port center section. I know I'd loose
some power but I'd gain that low-end torque. I'd like a choke too. I
remember trying to start my bus on a 50 degree day - it wouldn't happen and
winters were a joke. Dual webers are NOT the carb to use on a midwest
vehicle that is driven in the winter and cooler days. I love the sound of
those webers but they're coming off and I'll never run them again as long as
I live here.

I'm putting front discs on and since John
said rear discs on a beetle are a joke on a stock setup, I'm putting the
super stopper pads and WCs on the back.

(you still do!) The web forums just don't do it for
me - it's slow, clunky, and is made too easy for the masses to get on. A
listserv kind of weeds out the insincere people and so that is why I always
like the format - you could be that someone who went to the trouble to get
on here really wanted to join in and learn all they could. I don't hate the

It seems like only yesterday that I can remember the new VW Beetle was to
be released by Volkswagen and the Concept 1 cars were to be seen in the
magazines and in Matchbox form. I remember back in 1996 when it was 2 years

off yet. Now here we are in 2008 and the new beetle is 10 years old. I
can't hardly believe it. I remember posting on the list and saying I wonder

how long until someone wrecks one so I can get ahold of it and fix it up.
LOL! There is a lady here in town who flew to L.A. to pick up hers and
drive it back here. 10 years later, she still has it and is driving it all
around. That's just a little less than what I've owned and driven Li'l Red
for. And the little bugger is still running pretty good. Gotta get new
brakes put on and rebuild the carb. Finally going to make the conversion
over to disc brakes so we'll see how that goes.

Does anyone know where I can get replacement jets for the 34-PICT-3? After
34 years, I think it's high time I replace mine.

Yeah! I had a black 2002 diesel beetle for a commuter car when I was working
from San Diego to north LA regularly and was getting 50mpg even running it
constantly at 80+ mph. I wish I would have kept it and converted it to bio
diesel and then brought in a 250 gallon storage tank and made the rounds to
McDonalds to load up on free fuel.

I wish someone would figure out a way to make an ACVW engine into a bio
diesel engine!

NQ,

I remember buying a T-Shirt at a VW dealership in the mid-90's
that has the New Beetle car on it. They hadn't even officially named
it the New Beetle yet; the shirt said Concept car. I still have the shirt
(though it probably doesn't fit as well). I bought a '99 NB in 2001 with
25,000 miles on it. It is now approaching 100,000 miles and has not
given me any trouble. The only repair needed so far was the mass
air-flow senser (check engine light came on).

I can't help you with your quest for jetting on the 34-Pict -3.
I was always able to tune my 34-Pict-3 sucessfully on my
stock engine (stock distributor). I've not had to shop for new jets
though I've heard of people getting jets from a motorcycle shop. .

I plan on getting my '73 SB on the road this summer after it sitting in
the garage for the last 8 years. I've since bought a '65 Convertible
and a '67 Ghia (for my wife). I stopped driving the '73 SB when the original
engine got too tired. I'm replacing the engine and will be using a
Weber Progressive carburetor. I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on
using the Weber Progressive, but want to try it anyway.

I've been on the list for 10+ years and have enjoyed your stories of
Lil' Red. I also remember you having a '60's bus, do you still have it?
How did the 1776 engine and dual carbs work?

I'd be interested in the Disc Brake conversion for my '73 SB. I hope you
keep the list informed of your progress.

Piece of trivia stuck in my head.

Motorcycle shop. Jets for a Mikuni (?) carb. If they don't have the size
you need buy small and drill to spec (with a proper set of jet drill bits).

If you're good enough with a torch to avoid destroying your current jets
you should be able to fill the old jets with high temp brazing solder and
redrill them like new too.
