Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] women and technology

Having read this, I think you girls should start a RFC on English Wikipedia
highlighting this issue, and may be many would agree to have a point added
to WP:Deletion Policy (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_policy) or at least at
Wikipedia:NPP#Be nice to the newbies (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NPP#Be_nice_to_the_newbies) and
even Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers

Also you may raise this issue at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gender_gap.
It's a possibility others may have been raised this issue already, and you
can join the discussion.

Many new comers work at WP:NPP and there is no way to recognize female
editors on Wiki unless they mentioned it on their userpages. And they don't
visit userpages.

A solution could be to add a new gadget like markAdmins, which works like
this
http://en.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q6636985curid=6466221action=history

I don't know if it is possible technically.
But if we could add a similar gadget and if they like to reveal their
gender, then it'd be easy.

Just my thought, many would find it extra burden. But you may go ahead and
give it a try.

anyone, and more so for girls.” Instead of spending the time creating a

Makes me wonder if it is to be deemed as the case of male editors pulling
the pages down. Or is it the case of experienced editors being less
tolerant and not encouraging to most new editors irrespective of their
gender. I believe it more often than not the second.

To share another incident to illustrate the point. There was another
 Women's

This was being shown on a projector for the rest of the lady participants
to watch and learn. And lo and behold we had an editor for nowhere slap a

could Afd-ed it and have questioned the merits of noteability.

We all know the treatment of new editors... they have a rough time

we have very few women editors. But we ought to be careful to not project
this as a case of male editors being non supportive of women, (which may

Perhaps the above reference in the article was the interpretation of the
news reporter or perhaps even a misquote (which happens often in the media
 too).

For the record the Women's workshop that I referred to was co-organised
by many supportive men keen to bridge the gender gap in wikipedia - Om,
Soumyan, Pavanaja and yours truly. Of course the event was led by a very
capable and enthusiastic lady wikipedian Pavithra!

We surely need the experienced editors to be a whole lot more sensitive
and to be careful not to

Just a thought.

The point I was making in my post was that this was perhaps not gender
specific. It seems to happen to many new editors. Let us please not
generalize this and make this gender bias. This issue is a case of lack of
sensitivity to new editors.

Many new comers work at WP:NPP and there is no way to recognize female

Also why should one need to recognize the gender of a user? Extending
courtesies or extending a helpful hand to new editor surely has nothing to
do with the gender of an editor. It should apply to all new editors.

From my interactions in a few workshops related to bridge gender gaps, most
women dont want any special treatment, they just want a fair take at things
like anyone else.

Hi Arun,
Re: The para in italics in your mail. I agree with you that the dynamics
probably had to do with experienced editors vs. newbies, but if the former
were perceived as 'males' that tells me something about who the experienced
editors are!

To put a positive spin on it, maybe there are lots of newbies out there who
happen to be women - so they need to be encouraged along with the other
newcomers.

Glad to hear about the women's workshop which had so many of you
'supportive men'. May your tribe increase.

I will pass around the information about the new user tag. That's a very
useful point.

Hi Ansuman,
The gender gap link provides useful information about the kinds of projects
people are working on. Thanks for pointing it out.

Not sure about the need to identify female editors. Increasing relevant and
gender-sensitive content whether in the Indian languages or in English
could be a task for all of us.

And yes, be nice to all newbies!

Also you may raise this issue at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gender_gap.
It's a possibility others may have been raised this issue already, and you

Many new comers work at WP:NPP and there is no way to recognize female

A solution could be to add a new gadget like markAdmins, which works like
 this

I don't know if it is possible technically.
But if we could add a similar gadget and if they like to reveal their
 gender, then it'd be easy.

Just my thought, many would find it extra burden. But you may go ahead and
 give it a try.

Hi, I am sorry. I din't mean to make it a gender bias. I totally understand
your point and I think you are right.

I just thought, that way it could help. Still I think as per Gender Gap
Campaign, if we discuss and make it a point on the guidelines that as we
are trying to have more female wikipedians, be nice to new editors.

I understand the review process should not be based on the gender. And I am
not saying identifying female editors is the solution, but if they wish to
reveal (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Female_Wikipedians), the
community should think of something, which could help.

I am not deciding anything for them. I am trying to open new ways which
could help.

I don't understand how pages getting deleted quickly has anything to do
with the gender of the editor. Yes, it's more likely that articles related
to Kate Middleton's ward-robe are likely to get deleted faster than
articles on esoteric distros of Linux (an example Jimmy gave earlier) but I
don't see how the above assertions make any sense. It displays
misunderstanding of the problem related to gender-gap (no, it's not
Wikimedia-specific) and shows our projects in a bad light.

The article suggests that male Wikipedia editors put down newbie female

I understand the review process should not be based on the gender. And I

Also you may raise this issue at

Many new comers work at WP:NPP and there is no way to recognize female
editors on Wiki unless they mentioned it on their userpages. And they don't
 visit userpages.

A solution could be to add a new gadget like markAdmins, which works
 like this

I don't know if it is possible technically.
But if we could add a similar gadget and if they like to reveal their

Just my thought, many would find it extra burden. But you may go ahead

Konkani belongs to somewhat a unique class of Wikimedia languages where
many scripts may be used for the same content. Not exclusive, this list
includes at least English, Devanagari, Kannada and Malayalam.

The ideal goal in the case of a Konkani Wikimedia project is to have an
input system in any script from the above set as the user prefers and then
also to render the output in any script from the above set. The content
itself may be stored in some particular script or code space.

If I remember correctly, there have been several discussions in possible
techniques and tools to enable such a feature. Amir (Amir Elisha Aharoni ·
אָמִיר אֱלִישָׁע אַהֲרוֹנִי), Shiju Alex or Santhosh Thottingal may be able
to enlighten us more about this.

This may also be the case for Sanskrit, as Sanskrit used to be scribed in
different scripts (other than just in devanagari) in different regions.
Perhaps, we should even have a Harward-Kyoto transliterated version for
Sanskrit.

On an even more ambitious scale, I dream about each Indic language being
available for input and output in every other Indic scripts. (Imagine
someone in Kerala trying to read and practice a Bengali poem without having
to know the Bengali script itself, and vice versa.)

Of course, this depends upon the amount of synergy we put in. In terms of
computing technology, this should not be a problem at all. But someone will
have to conceive and design a basic framework and engine (like an
MVChttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MVC_modelmodel) that can be used
with a common back end repository for contents in
all languages. There shall be 100% accurate and lossless reversible
script-to-script translation maps working on real time (at the instances of
inputting and rendering).

Some possible obstacles, as it occurs to me:

1. Increased server/browser load due to the additional processing

2. Incompatibilities and non-uniqueness between scripts. (For eg: Some
languages have letters / phonemes that are not available in some other
languages, [eg. ഴ (a sound/letter in Malayalam)( ಳ / ழ/ ళ)
3. Availability of enough multi-lingual experts to verify the quality of
such translations

4. Implementation of long-term standards and version control.
