[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Wikipedia Blocked in Pakistan

2023-02-04 Thread praveenp

Feeling heartbroken over the news of Wikipedia being banned in
Pakistan by Shehbaz Sharif led Pakistan Government. Knowledge should
be freely accessible to all, not limited by censorship.
Authoritarian governments disconnect Internet to disengage people from
Politics. It would be difficult to sympathize others without
acknowledging ourselves (https://internetshutdowns.in/).
Good time to get our maps corrected without vandalism. Can someone
tell how will it impact India? What are the next steps?
India and Pakistan aren't the only countries in the world, and there are
lot of editors from other countries also correcting vandalism. If you
are imposing certain point of view, that would be the vandalism.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Re: Condition of a Wikimedian, arrested by UP Police

2022-09-09 Thread praveenp
FINALLY!

The Supreme court granted Bail to Kappen. He was imprisoned since October
2020 under UAPA while reporting the Gang rape and murder or 19 year old
Dalit woman from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Everybody in India can be so proud
of this entire saga.
I hope Kappen (wanna be Kappens too) learned his lesson, and won't commit
any "Unlawful activities" like reporting gangrapes in holy states.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Condition of a Wikimedian, arrested by UP Police

2021-05-08 Thread praveenp
Dear Indian Wikimedians,

As many of you may have known, one of our fellow Wikimedian was arrested by
Uttar Pradesh Police in October 2020. His name is Siddique Kappan (His
wikimedia username is User:Sidheeq). He is from Kerala, and he was active
in Wikimedia projects (mainly in Malayalam Wikipedia) until his arrest.

Incidently he is a journalist and he was arrested from the home of Hathras
rape and murder victim while reporting the victim Dalit girl's family
members. UP Police has slapped Sedition, Terrorism as well as UAPA charges
against him.

Kappen is diabetic and now COVID positive. He was admitted to hospital only
after he collapsed in the jail cell. With his deteriorating health, it was
accused that Kappan was chained to hospital bed like an animal. Today's
news reports say that he is in critical condition. (You could always google
"Siddique Kappan")

As a tone deaf people I don't expect anything from this mail, I just wish
to share the information.

Stay Inside, Stay Complementary (non-critical), Stay safe, Stay healthy.

2014-10-16 Thread praveenp
Dear fellow Wikimedians and Chapter Members,

This is a bad situation. Anivar Aravind is not ready to answer any
questions or concern about him. Everytime somebody ask him some
explanations, he either attack user(s) who try to get some
clarifications claiming that they have some agendas or ducking back
and hiding for sometime.

Personally I even don't and and I am not interested know him outside
these mailing list. As you can see, always he select words to feel
like there is a long time 'real life rivalry' as an escape tactics. I
only want to know truth and reasons.

But various accusations against him and his attitude to community
seriously trouble me also. Generally he came to ml.wp village pump to
teach us pretending somekind of 'techno-upper-cast' that we were
wrong (eg: Unicode normalization decision and ULS deployment) but
fortunately there is always enough people with better knowledge.

I believe it is better to ban people like him from representing
Wikimedia India and Indian Wikimedians community at least untill there
is some answers.

I believe that a person who acting as a returning officer must be

Here you are acting as a returning officer. That bit is too hard for
me to understand.

I know that there are manyy allegations against you including recent
one from a female fellow feminism activist. Personally I didn't see
any explanation from you anywhere even-though there is a vast
discussion in facebook and other social medias about this issue. I
don't knnow that whether you sexually offended anybody anywhere. But I
believe that you cannot pop up somewhere else without explaining
yourself anywhere after such a big accusation. OR may be I am missing
explanation from your side.

I know nothiing about others though.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Mediawiki-i18n] beta testing mobile webfonts

2013-12-19 Thread praveenp

FYI:

 Original Message
Subject:[Mediawiki-i18n] beta testing mobile webfonts

Reply-To: MediaWiki internationalisation

Per conversations with Amir, Santhosh, Siebrand, and Jon, I would like
to beta test mobile webfonts on 1 wiki and then possibly add more wikis
later if the beta test does not cause any adverse effects. To this end,
I have identified seven candidate wikis that I would like your help to
narrow down further. These seven wikis meet the following criteria:

1. The language of the wiki would benefit from loading a webfont by default
2. The default font would be less than 50K in size
3. The wiki has at least 50 active users (i.e. a community)

LanguageCodeArticlesUsers Active UsersFont Size
Punjabi pa 8,069 6,818 61 12.6K
Gujaratigu 24,623 17,696 59 28K
Marathi mr 39,621 39,114 135 36.4K
Nepali ne 24,944 14,379 73 36.5K
Hindi hi 109,045 101,837 274 37.3K
Oriya or 4,535 5,937 76 47.8K
Kannada kn 14,384 17,455 177 48K

The main variables that I don't know are:
1. How bad is the experience on each of these wikis without webfonts?
2. Do we already have a working relationship with the communities on any
of these wikis?

If you guys could help me narrow down this list to one or two choices,
it would be greatly appreciated!

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-news/internet/Wikipedia-will-go-secure-to-beat-NSA-surveillance/articleshow/21556479.cms

/Just days after reports revealed that National Security Agency (NSA)
in the US actively looked at what people read on Wikipedia, Wikimedia
Foundation announced on its website that it would implement HTTPS for
logged-in users.

The foundation, a non-profit organization, manages Wikipedia. The S in
HTTPS stands for secure.

Two days ago, Guardian newspaper revealed that with the help of a tool
called XKeyscore, NSA was monitoring web users who accessed Wikipedia,
the world's 7th most popular website.

Wikimedia said that to start with, it would offer HTTPS connection to
all logged-in users from August 21. It will then gradually roll-out
HTTPS for all users as well as implement additional security measures
to make it harder for governments to snoop on Wikipedia users.
However, it did not specify any deadlines for the additional security
measures.

Following the Guardian report, Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of
Wikipedia, had revealed on Twitter that the website was planning to
switch to HTTPS from HTTP but there were a few bugs that had delayed
the process.

Our current architecture cannot handle HTTPS by default, but we've
been incrementally making changes to make it possible. Since we appear
to be specifically targeted by XKeyscore, we'll be speeding up these
efforts, Wikimedia said on its website.

On Friday Wales announced the Wikimedia decision and tweeted, I
challenge the rest of the industry to join us. Encryption is a human
rights issue.

HTTPS is more secure compared to HTTP. Websites using HTTPS establish
a secure connection between their servers and the user's computer and
greatly minimize the privacy risk. The secure connection means that
third parties like government agencies or internet service providers
(ISPs) can not read the content of data that a website and its users
exchange.

However, the government agencies, hackers and internet service
providers can still collect this data and possibly read it if they can
break the encryption.

Initially, only banks and other organizations mindful of cyber
security risks used HTTPS. But gradually email service providers and
e-commerce websites started using it on their login pages. Currently,
popular websites like Google, Facebook and Twitter use HTTPS but the
majority of websites, including big ones like Yahoo! still rely on HTTP.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Universal Language Selector

2012-11-14 Thread praveenp

Apology: I am not from Indus Valley and not even a north Indian; I don't
know whether I am allowed to write here. ;-) Anyway I am posting
because this may affect so many languages, including those True Indian
Indus Vally languages. :-p

Dear Friends,

I have seen extensive development in ULS, and it is live in
translatewiki.net. It is a kind of joined form of Narayam and Webfonts,
and intended to provide easy access to any users including new users in
non-Latin wikies. It looks like sooner or later will reach our wikies.

I agree that Narayam and Webfonts need some UI love, but even with that
fact, they are easily understandable and usable. Atleast to me, ULS is
no ullas. It is complex and UI is too confusing. For eg, you may need to
enable keymap on each text area before typing in your language. I
switched myself to IBus, just for convenience.

I hope I am wrong, but I urge others to check ULS and report problems
find by you. Doing so, it is possible to make it atleast usable. :-)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Sanskrit, scripts and Wikisource

2012-03-07 Thread praveenp
Frankly, i had not understood what you said earlier :-(, thank you
for later one. As you may have known, I personaly not interested in
current type wide deployment of webfonts, not only because usability
of its current deployment is limited, but also it is almost obsolete
in its current purpose. Still I believe it can provide much help to
users in multi-script environment. For sanskrit, even en.wp article
says that many compatible scripts including malayalam, kannada, telugu
etc were used to write sanskrit. Providing all those scripts in
webfonts in wiki level may be idiotic in developer sense. If users are
able to select appropriate font (read script) for them, then IMO it
will be the real win of webfonts.

Anyway i'm happy to know you've such a vast knowledge about silpa

however needs more work and when the software has been tried and tested it
still needs to be implemented in MediaWiki.

So the answer is: please help us code this functionality :)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Images in wikipedia

2012-02-27 Thread praveenp
By user level customization it is possible. I think providing such a
feature by default, in wiki level, in projects like wikipedia is a bad
idea because each file page contains much more data than a pop up
layer can afford. Unlike facebook or google plus, only relevant and
properly licensed pictures, remain undeleted in wikimedia projects. So
all informations present in media pages, including license, category,
included pages, details about the file, etc are important for an
encyclopedic project. So current style file pages are not replacable
(atleast for now). Still user customization possible for those who not
interested in such details.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Announcing live search for the Wikimedia projects

2012-02-23 Thread praveenp
Like the work, probably except that tiny all rights reserved part. ;-)

i hope developers will add some features to go directly to required
site+lang+im without using select options (using query strings or
something like ?project=wplang=mlim=tr). Just thinking loud because
i have seen in similar cases that a user always wanted direct focus on
input field for searching.

 Hi all,

 Greetings from Wikimedia India !!!

We are proud to announce live search for the Wikimedia projects
 http://live.wikimedia.in.

The site was developed by Shrey Gokani under guidance of Wikimedia India
 Chapter.

We want to thank Shrey Gokani for volunteering to do this project and
 making this a reality.

We also want to thank Santhosh Thottingal and Junaid P V for the
 contributions for this project.

Special thanks to Naveen Francis for leading this initiative.

 How to use ?
 * Select your Wikimedia Project, say “Wikipedia”
 * Select language of the project to search, say “English”
 * Input your search string in the Search: Box
 * The site auto displays possible pages based on the string match.
 * The site is also integrated with Narayam to support Indic language
search. So select the corresponding input method ( if available) while
 searching on a Indic Project.

This is still a beta version and further improvements are needed.
As of now, it supports only English and Indic Language projects.

I feel no sympathy for Nichalp or any such users. Per this discussion,
he chose his path which is clearly against the aims of wikipedia.
Somebody stated here that Nichalp himself appeared in this thread, so
i assume, he has no intention to stop what he is doing. Why we should
sympathize to hin?

Btw paid edits are bad and anything paid editor devoted is only money

what he really wanted is tearing the mask, has taken almost similar
alleged modus operandi of Nichalp to publish his thought. :-). No
allegation intended in this entire last paragraph, i've not seen him

Nicholas was the ideal Role model for us back in 2007-8-9. He churned out
articles of good quality like no one.
It was indeed sad that he had to resort to what he did.
It proves that a man is remembered more for what evil deeds he does and not
 what good he does.
Few people would know that Nichalp was the original uploader of Indian maps
 on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons.

As for the IIPM related edits, yes, not just WifiOne, but another editor,
who replied to the Talk page of the 'Management Guru', seem to be doing
what it takes from keeping others from editing that article.
Said user believes that I, or User:Utcursh shouldn't edit the article AS:
i] I tweeted negatively about IIPM.
ii] Utcursh is from another Business School an thus has a CoI.
This resulted in MikeLynch taking a neutral stand on the talk page which
resulted in the said user voting against in Mike's RfA, [and again, blaming
 it ON me!]

I think we need a special talk about this IIPM matter on the English

 Great suggestion Fae.
As Srikanth correctly pointed it out, such an ID would be under the content
scope, which neither the chapter or the WMF India operations have any
 jurisdiction over.

I remember a couple of years ago, Wikinews tried this for their active
editors, offering to print them 'official reporter' IDs. It was an idea at
the time, and I'm not sure if they actually implemented it or not.

For photographers, this would be the commons community. This shouldn't be
too hard, I suggest someone mentioning the political situation and
suggesting this for commons photographers in the VP. The great thing is
since, it would be the community who would award it, there is little or no
direct liability to an official body. There should however be a contribution
record or an endorsement from someone to print these out.

One thing the chapter can do however, is offer a special
member/photographers ID to the existing members. This could be at a
surcharge so they don't undertake any expense- they can print out plastic
IDs with photos, and membership detail of the existing members. This ID
might be able to suffice for the purpose.

I don't think that the card should necessarily be printed at a centralised
location. In fact, I don't even think this is desirable (from security and
logistics viewpoints). It should be fairly simple to 'approve' a request for
accreditation (framework discussed already), then lead to a web-based
one-time card generator that the user can print and laminate herself. In
case of problems printing, the user should have a fallback option to report
the failure, in order to enable a second attempt for the card to be printed.

 Theo

is practically not possible to include all 250+ interwikies to
considerably short main page. In articles, taking up closly related or
our second language to top of the interwiki list will sure be an added
advantage for readers. Ultimatly wp is sharing informations to its
readers. For eg. For Malayalam, a list starting from English, Hindi,
Tamil, Kannada, Sanskrit, etc can be handy to many users than
providing a list starting 'not even heard' languages.

 Hi,

I am uploading the images to commons.

The default category is TamilWiki Media Contest

Want to add more categories for the images.

 Adding, the categories using HotCat
 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Gadget-HotCat

 is so boring and tough.

Is there any possibilities for adding categories for multiple images
 in a single go?

Mayur may be correct. But I don't understand what he is doing in Hindi
wiki. :)

Some examples:

* I saw he himself changed his account rights many times
(http://hi.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Logtype=rightsuser=Mayurpage=year=month=-1tagfilter=hide_review_log=1).
* Using 'abuse filter' excessively, such that blocking or warning a new
user who did his/her first edit
(http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:AbuseLog?title=Special:AbuseLogwpSearchUser=wpSearchFilter=0wpSearchTitle).
(even mayurbot invoking abuse filter!)
* Sometimes he even imported commons file to Hindi local
(http://hi.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Logpage=Image:Cave%2C+from+inside.jpg)
!

I don't know why, but I feel that he is requesting almost every (just
exaggerating :)) extension available for mediawiki to Hindi Wikipedia
and using Wikipedia as his test wiki. If someone can clarify what he is
doing there, probably that will be a great help for admins from other
wikies :)

niceties. The basic questions raised about EC are the following:

Actioning off membership is a satiric or exaggerated reply to the mail
which has an entirely non-related subject (bank account) from original
thread.

 1) Why was the election held without informing others of the agenda
(the EC answered that it was a required step to formalise the
 organisation per registration rules, )

 2) Why was the delay in communication about the 22 Jan meeting (the EC
answered that as a formal org now, they cannot issue communiques
without first having the paperwork in place)

More than that, why no mentioning about Jan 22 meeting and about new
names in the thread which discussing chapter's transparency (Jan last
week). I believe chapter do not need to wait until finishing paperwork
for sharing information with community.

 3) Why were the leadership designations changed among the EC members.
(This hasnt been answered as far as i know)

 4) Why was Praveen's mail moderated ( clearly answered; because it got
caught in the spam filters due to an embedded HTML)

I am pretty much satisfied with 1, 2 and 4. But 3 hasnt been answered
and people are now accusing you of being a sekret cabal. I am a new
member to the list and as someone uninvolved, my humble suggestions to
 clear the air are:

 1) Answer no 3 and any other questions people have been asking
 2) Bluntly define the chapter's role - not the MoA/constitution etc
(people are under the impression that the chapter can get involved in
 deletion discussions in commons)

I think Bala misread that mail. Somebody asked me to share any Idea
which chapter can run, I said many images originated from India deleted
in commons because there is no proper source or license for many images.
And if we've proper agreement with any museum or art gallery (most of
them are under central or state govts) like Tropenmuseum project, that
will be useful. Once chapter initiate such process, I am sure interested
people will join and take hold.

 3) Get some non EC moderators to the mailing list immediately to avoid
any appearance of conflict of interest.

Thank you for the email. You can review the Wikimedia mailing lists
administration page for information about the role of list admins and
mods. Here is a link which you can review:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Administration

Do you only block obvious spam or other messages, and if so on
what basis?

The spam filter on default catches spam and other bulky messages
(including ones that have image(s) embedded in them.) I think
Delphine's email contains a nice explanation.

List mods can moderate trolls and other problem users
who willfully cause or contribute to disruption on the mailing list.

I am naturally curious since a message from Praveen that you only just
released seems to have been sent in 3 days ago.

Furthermore, I think we'd benefit from understanding how people may
apply to become administrators on this list.

I understand the source of curiosity and would like to clarify that
Praveen's email was caught in the filter because it had an image
embedded in it.

In light of Anirudh's recent appointment to administrator of this
list,
is there an open process by which other members might apply?
(Foundation-l seems to have three administrators, though I would
imagine
that there is nothing stopping WikimediaIndia-l from having more than
three).

There is no formal process for appointment of list administrators.
The usual practice on Wikimedia lists is for the founder of a mailing
list to appoint admins and mods whom s/he can trust with keeping the
lists running as smoothly as possible.

At this point of time, we don't feel the need for having more list
administrators, however list subscribers who are interested in keeping
a check on the spam filter as moderators can write an email to either
list admins.

Please note that I don't ask with persecutory intent, but merely to
clear gaps in my own understanding, which might be a problem that
other
people on this list face as well. Since WikimediaIndia-l is such an
important place for all kinds of conversations that cut across the
movement in India, it's in all our interests to know exactly how it is
managed.

I rmember I asked about chapter's future plans in one of the other

May I know, whether asking idea is the basic idea? :) (I dont think it

For eg, in commons many images originated from India are deleted or
waiting to get deleted, just because no source available saying it is in
PD. Chapter can initiate a project to find PD images from India. Any
member can find many such issues, if they are wiki-rooted.

I didn't said I am an 'idea'(l) man. I tried to say, lack of openness of

Sorry, I think a concrete foundation is necessary to create a body.

Fair criticism Praveen and you aren't the first one to ask either.
Wikimedia, to me, is larger than the just projects and embodies
philosophies and ideals that I find very dear. Much of my work
revolves around these ideals and you can read some of it here:
 http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/24780

I have no desire to lead but one to bootstrap a body that is
supportive of the community - of all of you. I am immaterial in the
larger scheme of the things and the Chapter should and must be a
 reflection of the community.

 Thank you.
Fair, But I think not enough :(

According to

100 000 articles have been automatically dismissed as irrelevant.

When we focus on number of articles, some end up creating useless

Ravi
This may be nothing related to original thread. Sorry. Malayalam
wikipedia has its strength and its weakness.

Depth is just an indicator of collaborative character of editors. For a
massive multiauthor collaboration site, some measurement mechanism is
better than none. But I don't think large number of edits are bad. If
anyone thinks that articel by single edit is better than multi edited
article, I must say thats not wiki style :( .

But there is an another issue, number of bot edits. Many ml users,
mainly students, like to play with bots. Malayalam Wikipedia has never
discouraged anyone for testing their bots (if their edits are okay),
because user satisfaction is also a Wikipedia goal. We know that
eventually they will create a great bot :). Sometimes running a bot is
not very simple. I had a spell checker bot and I had to overview all of
its edits, because of Malayalam's ligatures and grammatical rules [or
may be because bad logic ;-)]. Even after running couple of months, it
threw exceptions. So I'll say bot edits also are a kind of manual
inputs. Now there are many global bots, most of them contributing
interwiki. Bot conflict and bot-edit-war occurs occasionally which we
usually avoided by protecting the page or by noticing the owner (Recent
eg: See history of ??:???
http://ml.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%B4%B5%E0%B5%BC%E0%B4%97%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%97%E0%B4%82:%E0%B4%AB%E0%B4%B2%E0%B4%95%E0%B4%99%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%99%E0%B5%BEaction=history).

Malayalam Wikipedia is a small wiki, just over 16000 pages on main
namespace, so it is easy to exaggerate bot contribution. But actually it
is not, whenever a bot identified as doing unwanted edit it gets blocked.

There are many wiki-projects which always engage users to do something
on wiki. So whenever a user find an error, even it is the minute one,
he/she corrects it. Nobody waits for large content to edit. Many portal
(?) pages are there, which helps users to find their favourite topic.

In ml.wp - many pages in category namespace (there is an active
categorization wiki-project, which keeps articles finely categorized),
large number of templates and many help pages and project pages with
good content (I'm sure that many of these help pages and project pages
are really useful to new users to jump start wikipedia) are available. I
think we are using talk pages aslo very well.

It is clear from depth formula, that all these factors can be
incremental to depth. So if anybody believes that Malayalam Wikipedia
is irrelevant, I welcome them to there to check its irrelevancy and
contribute their home wikii until it become irrelevant like Malayalam
Wikipedia. :)

Thanks, but still unfortunately I cannot blame one Kiruba for self
promotion using Wikimedia foundation just because none of the WMIN
signatories' activities are clear to others (or atleast to me, may be my
wrong). You may know that there is a website for Wikimedia India chapter
(http://wikimedia.in/), so if possible, copy those pages to there (most
of the Indian wikimedians are not active in meta). Please add brief
notes about purpose, current activities (I saw some researchers,
consultants, etc) and future blueprints also in the website.

Rendering of Malayalam script is very bad. Same might be the case with most

the other Indian scripts. (Devanagari might have reasonable support) So this
site is of not much use to Malayalam as of now, even though we are regularly
 updating it.

Atleast for some phones its not. I've a Nokia 2700 classic phone, and
its Malayalam Rendering is good. With complex text rendered Opera mini,
reading Malayalam websites are also not a problem. I remember once
Jyothis confirmed that IOS 4 rendering for Malayalam is also good.

I bought my Nokia 2700 phone from Kerala. I think its OS is patched for
south Indian languages' better display (It has built in support for
Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English). Only problem with
that phone I found is - it has no unicode 5.1 support.

It is possible to type in Malayalam from that phone, but from my
perspective it is not easy to type Malayalam from that mobile even with
its good Malayalam prediction database.
