RE: [WISPA] Interested in your experience..
Our network is currently made up of Raylink FHSS Trango 900 Raylink/Brilan DSSS Alvarion 900 Trango Link-10 All in all we have had pretty good luck with all of the above once the bugs were worked out. The real workhorse of our network is Raylink FHSS but we are starting to move away from it due to the bandwidth limitations of FHSS. The raylink/brilan DSSS works fairly well but has some minor irritations with regards to signal strength readouts and I am concerned about future updates and upgrades from them. The alvarion 900 works well but is a pain to install. Trango 900 works well also but offers no indoor installation options and cpe costs are still high. We are going to be setting up a few new pops this year and I would like to try out some new equipment, hopefully something that would work out well enough to use for upgrading our existing network as time goes by. I have looked into MT and StarOS due to the ability to be able to keep the equipment upgraded with software updates and if needed completely replace the software in the future using the same hardware. I also like the thought of having one platform that I could use for 2.4, 5.x and 900 in the future. What I am worried about is going through the hassle of building out all the CPE's keeping the software up to date and the cost is not all that great. I also want something that is aesthetically pleasing, rootennas are not all that attractive. I am also looking for something to put up and forget about. Demarc stuff looks pretty nice and the price is not bad but I had heard of some reliability issues in the past, they may have all been taken care of by now though. I also had a hard time getting a hold of anyone there in the past when I was considering making a purchase. This may have changed also its been a while since I called. Canopy looks attractive do to the one brand all bands and the pricing is tolerable. I am not sure I like being stuck with Vert polarity, its noisy here and it kind of scares me going with proprietary equipment. The Trango 2.4, not really sure why I put this down because it really doesn't seem competitive cost wise. I am interested in what type of performance people are getting out of them though and how they are doing in noisy environments. The 900 is not all that great when it is noisy in my experience. I am interested in the waverider for one particular residential area that would be very nice to have a preconfigured radio for someone to pick up and do a self install indoors. Getting rid of a truck roll and having to have something on the outside of the home. Also looking for a backhaul to try besides the link-10 from trango. Would like to find something in the 5.8 band with similar throughputand latency of trango for the same or less $$. This is another reason I thought about MT, StarOs, Demarc stuff was for multiple radios on the same board so the AP and BH could be the same piece of hardware and software. Just looking for some comments in general about the different options and why you did/didn't pick one over the other. Mac, Last time I was running Trango (Immediatly following the hurricane) my clients were dropping like fly's. It was not until I scrambled to get the Canopy's in the air that I was able to keep all of my commercial clients. I hate the throughput of Canopy but at the same time I have clients up and running. My ideal gear would be Trango throughput spec's with GPS Sinc capability's like the Canopy. [WISPA] TrangoLink-10 Problem
I've got a TLink-10 MU that seems to have a problem. When the MU's opmode is set to ON, the TXPKT LED comes on immediately and does not go out. The link does not work, the RU will not connect. Anyone seen this? Firmware is latest on the Trango site at v1.11. Re: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history
Before I came to the WISP world, I had 13 years as a technician that had customer contact and often did technical support over the phone. I often was the guy across the counter when the customer was happy...and when he was not. I never cease to be amazed at stories of businesses with people on the phone who have bad attitudes, who blame the customer, etc, etc. I've learned the customer is always right, at least in his own mind. And you can tell him he's wrong, but you have to use some tact and courtesy when you do. And you absolutely MUST be right, if you do. After I left, a crisis in the business I worked for caused management to break some of those rules, and that caused a serious downward trend. I've found you can charge the guy twice as much as he thought he should pay, if you things right and fix the problem right, and you can make an honest explanation. I've also discovered that goes hand in hand with surprising him with NO bill when it's your fault and he thinks its his. I know, I'm a bit old fashioned, in that I think that relationships make or break you in the business world. Lots of people will say that people are fickle and will jump to save 10 bucks. Maybe WISP's share these traits. Some will jump to save 10 bucks. Others are loyal to a fault. If anyone, ANYWHERE who represents a vendor is on these lists and reads this... and your company culture represents the faults described below... I can't imagine how you expect to stay in business. I've used and still in the market to use Equinox antennas, even though some had terrible faults. Why? Because they have honestly tried to resolve issues with me. They've gone above and beyond to fix things. Do I see comments from Pacwireless about improving thier 29 db 5 ghz grids? Nope. But Equinox has kept me informed and in the loop. Honestly, that's a lot to say about a company.Nobody makes perfect stuff... But if they do thier honest best to make things right, it goes a long ways toward keeping customers happy. Re: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history
Chadd, I've experienced the same issues with Trango tech support. I really really, really had to tell the guy on the phone that I knew what I was doing. Yes, a firmware fix was the answer. It was a bad experience but all in all I've had a very good experience with Trango products. I used them primarily as backhauls. Here's my $.02: I've got two M5800 systems that I purchased from Sunstream (for those of you who don't know...Sunstream products became Trango products). 4 years and going strong without the need to reboot for about 2 years (after the firmware fix of course). They (Sunstream) ran an advertisement in a magazine that I picked up that said they'd do 10mbps at 10 miles for under $2k. That (under $2k) was the draw for me at the time as we were only 6 months into the business at the time. This stuff has been great and they have traditionally been on the lower side cost-wise for a quality product. They do have problems. They fix them. They save us money. I hope to hear and experience good things about this new move. I intend to buy some and deploy them after the first or second rev of firmware fixes. I have faith in Trango as a product more than a company. It should work out...hopefully the product will live up to its promise. RE: [WISPA] TRANGO- changes history
I am probably far more cynical than most but I really hope that Trango has made a turn around as a company with the latest round of changes. I tend to remember the bad things more than the good. WARNING this is a list of the BAD things!! Good things are at the bottom... I remember purchasing link 10's as soon as they were released and spending time on the phone with at the time their rude tech support department trying to figure out why they were locking up randomly requiring a power cycle to get them back online. Only to find out from them that I was the only one in the world having this problem and it must be because I don't know how to install them. Low and behold a month or so later they release a firmware fix for the 30 or so Day lock up issue that didn't exist. I remember fighting with the 58xx form factor units filling up with water and destroying the ethernet ports on them. Again I spent a lot of time with the same rude tech support department trying to explain to them that it was a pressure/temp difference causing water to be pulled into the units. Again only to be accused of not knowing what I was doing and that I had to be installing the units upside down. What do you know after fighting with them about RMA repairs and such on the units they issue a statement about a month later to not tighten the strain relief all the way on the radio so they could breath and not pool water on the inside. I spent a Thanksgiving on a tower because of this. I remember buying and deploying a 900AP and having pissed off potential customers because I couldn't get any SU's to do their installs. Also getting to my 15th SU and trying to figure out why the web interface was hosed and I couldn't add any more subs to it. Again another firmware fix. I remember power supplies not having enough output to run the heaters on longer cable runs and having to buy new wall worts for some units. I remember fighting and scrounging trying to find a switch that would properly work with the ethernet ports on the units. I remember condensation building up on the inside of the random on 5.x units causing 30+ db of fade taking out links left and right. This is still an issue on units I have not replaces with external antennas I remember prices being jacked around. The various changes in distribution models and not knowing who I was going to get units from and how much was I going to have to pay for them. You know what even after all of this I still buy and deploy some Trango equipment, but it burns me every time I buy more stuff from them. These problems would have been much more tolerable if they would have been decent to work with and not so arrogant about insisting they werent having problems. THE GOOD stuff!!! I also remember setting up my first long BH 14 miles with a Link-10 and seeing 8ms latency and advertised throughput on the link. Hooking up a few dozen customers on T900 that I could never touch in the past with 2.4 or 5.x. I also get better throughput, distance and latency than with my Alvarion 900 customers, alvarion is a master and noise avoidance though when compared to T900. My link-10's just hum right along since the bugs were fixed. Besides the condensation issue on the INT units. I do think they are getting a bit better with regards to customer relations though and their tech support department was very personable and willing to help out last time I had to call them. So I hope this is a sign of things to come from them. I have been beating my head on the wall trying to figure out what equipment I want to use for a few new POP's this year and admit it would be nice if Trango pulled it together with a good line up of cost effective, feature rich and most of all bug free equipment early this year to add to my list of choices. I hate those routers, really. I find thier configuration mechanisms frustrating or annoying. Some are just downright almost unworkable. Since my CPE does full routing / NAT firewalling, etc... I still love it. That's an extra box I don't ahve to buy and whatnot. And yes, I understand you CAN use these. I love the reliability and s tability of my staros boxes. I think in the last 12 months I've had 1 or 2 WRAP based CPE need rebooted or restarted. Having the exact same thing at every site is nice :) It would take me a while to develop confidence in one of those consumer level routers. We have been installing Linksys / Dlink / Belkin routers at every install for almost 4 years. Customers get an "internal" wireless, we help protect them by having a firewall, and we then have a device we can monitor (with ping) to check their connection. No, I just read it. Let's all cool down a bit, stop puffing up our chests and get some real work done. Everyone seems to have their own equipment allegiances, which is fine, just don't impose your decisions on other people and ridicule them for the choices they have made. I know I have made my share of mistakes in this business and I'm sure I will make more. Right now my decision is to take it easy on Kurt cause I know he is a good kid even if he is a Buckeye! ;) Getting kicked off more than one list in a week would be pretty harsh, don't ya think? Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!
The Reflector is one negative trait regarding Trango. When the Internal short range, and external long range foxes were two different unit, it was disappointing that the Fox only had a reflector option compared to the 5830ext. However, my opinion on that has all changed now that its just one radio for short or long range, just a factor of sliding it into the reflector. There is a big cash flow advantage to having to jsut stock one radio instead of two. You pre-configure the radio, go onsite, try internal version first, if can't pull off the link, you add the reflector dish, no reconfiguarion needed, and off you go. This is a BIG time saver, compared to having to go onsite with two radios every install. Sure we can do site paths (distance) up front, but you can't predict noise floors. I think Travis was referring to the new 900 product and Atlas AP, which time tables have not been publically released. He's right, I should keep my mouth shut until Trango releases info first on their time table. Sorry, Trango. Its just hard to keep quiet about good news. Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!
Kurt, if you bothered to read, you'd realize your question is stupid. They are interesting, but I have to see the cost of the AP, etc, before I get real interested. I see the big dishes, but around here, that's a negative, because we get some strong winds now and then, and it's a pretty bad windcatcher. Not to mention, $100 is downright absurd, for what you get. My current 5 ghz clients are all 3.5 miles or more. If the ap isn't too costly, so that it can be used for small cells ( under 20 clients), I might be interested. Still, it's no substitute for what I'm putting up. Just cheaper client. The lack of routing at the customer end is a problem, as far as I'm concerned. Mark, don't you think you think you should be deploying in your 802.11a staros boxes? I would hate to see YOU invest in a proprietary solution. As far as your question these SM's are NOT connectorized and it appears as if the reflector is the only way to boost signal strength for now until another vendor makes a grid or something that you can attach the unit to. Tom, Do you really feel it's appropriate to be announcing on a list-serv about upcoming beta products? How many emails / phone calls do you think that generates for Trango on a product that isn't even shipping yet? Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!
Why (slamming head on desk) would you continue with Motorola when them dirty suckers are against you at every turn? They come out (Motorpoota) with a new CPE, lower priced but cut your through put (and throat) to almost nothing just to bait you into paying for an upgrade at a later date. Who in their right minds would buy a CPE that had its nuts cut out to a 512k connection? Get real - Trango is our buddy in that they have stepped up and brought us affordability, ability (triple play) and they arent lined up in D.C. trying to reclaim spectrum to put under license!! Not only that, but Motorpoota has lobbyist that are on payroll and in DC everyday! I think WISPA needs to have a plaque made up and sent right to the top man with the brass Kahonnies (Todd) at Trango exclaiming our approval, thanks and support :-) for enabling us to deliver what we deliver at a price that is affordable associated with a name as good as Trango. Polarities only get used individually, one or the other, software selectable on the fly. Trango radios are all Half Duplex on the RF. Ethernet ports (wired) are Full Duplex. Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!
I would also like to see more details. If it is anything like a multi-point version of their existing Atlas then it could be an interesting product. Having a connectorized 5.8Ghz multi-point AP at the Trango price point is certainly needed in the market. I only hope they drop the shitty RP-SMA connector in favor of something more robust like N. -Matt G.Villarini wrote: Saw that, cool. Need more details like the form factor? Antenna included ? Re: [WISPA] TRANGO!!
Trango Introduces New $149 WISP Subscriber Unit — Lowest priced fixed wireless modem available — SAN DIEGO, CA — January 18, 2006 - Trango Broadband Wireless, the leader in fixed broadband wireless equipment, introduced a major addition to its product line which will enable Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) to, for the first time, compete head-to-head against cable and DSL providers with the high performance Atlas Fox M5580M-FSU wireless modem, priced at just $149 and capable of internet transmission speeds from 10 to 30 Mbps. “We truly believe that the introduction of the Atlas Fox wireless modem is the sea change event that will transform the wireless internet service market into a consumer mass-market service capable of out-competing cable and DSL delivery methods,” said Zdravko Divjak, CEO and President of Trango Broadband Wireless. “This product is eliminating the final obstacle toward nationwide deployments of fixed broadband wireless networks capable of serving millions of users coast to coast.” “There’s nothing lite about the Atlas Fox M5580M-FSU,” said Todd Easterling, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for Trango Broadband Wireless. “This product offers the industry’s highest performance and at a dramatic price breakthrough. Our engineers have outdone themselves on this one, and many of the wireless internet service providers who have Beta-tested the Atlas Fox are raving about the price to performance ratio. To provide real 10 Mbps to their subscribers, at only $149 for the CPE (consumer premise equipment), enables WISPs to offer high-speed internet access to an entirely new market. More than ever, the return on investment and break-even points for WISPs deploying Trango are measurably superior to our competitors,” added Mr. Easterling. “Over the past few months we have clearly seen the cost and design benefits associated with controlling the entire product development and sales process—from engineering specification, to radios rolling off the production line of our own state-of-the-art factory in San Diego, to the direct sales model for the U.S. market. And most importantly, we’re passing on many of these benefits to our customers.” Trango’s Atlas Fox M5580M-FSU wireless modem, which can reach internet subscribers over twelve miles away from an Access Point (AP), currently provides upload and download speeds up to 10Mbps, and is upgradeable to speeds over 30Mbps. This provides a platform for next generation internet services known as the “triple play” (voice, video and data). In contrast, cable and telephone/DSL companies generally offer service between 1 Mbps and 6 Mbps bandwidth for downloads, and between 128 Kbps and 768 Kbps for uploads. Trango is taking orders for the Atlas Fox now. Shipments begin February 7 th, 2006. Classic SM's associated with Advantage APs can get 14 mbps throughput but only on burst, it won't be sustained. [WISPA] Fw: [TVWHITESPACE] NEI petition Docket 05-345
Hi All, I suggest that WISPA support this proposal. Naturally only those who are members will count when it comes time to decide to support this or not, but I think ideas and comments from everyone would be welcome and a good idea. In a nut shell, you all know we've already been working hard to get the TV white spaces (unused spectrum between TV channels) opened up as unlicensed. The Nuclear power industry has already been using those bands in some places for in plant communications devices. Now they want to lock everyone else out for the next 5 years. This proposal calls that a bad idea. laters, Marlon (509) 982-2181 Equipment sales (408) 907-6910 (Vonage)Consulting services 42846865 (icq)And I run my own wisp! 64.146.146.12 (net meeting) www.odessaoffice.com/wireless www.odessaoffice.com/marlon/cam - Original Message - From: "Harold Feld" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 4:34 PM Subject: Re: [TVWHITESPACE] NEI petition Docket 05-345 I have attached the comments filed on behalf of NAF, CUWN, and Free Press. RE: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna
Not so sure it's that simple. I have 2 separate setups that I'm seeing this problem with so I doubt it's 4 feed horns or radios gone bad at the same time. We're in the UK and unfortunately the RadioWaves support isn't quite as good here as it obviously is over there but I'll give em a go. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bob Moldashel Sent: 18 January 2006 13:07 To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna Paul, You may have a bad feed horn or you may have a bad radio. I would consider both before jumping off a bridge here.. Tell Radiowaves about your issue and see if you can send the feedhorns back for testing. They come right out and may be a quick test to see whats up. -B- Paul Hendry wrote: >Bob, I hear what you're saying and have been through the figures a few times >and even tried turning the power of the radio cards down to 1dB output >(still unable to run both links simultaneously) but this doesn't explain why >others are able to use the same radio cards with similar antennas with >little to no problems. > >Charles, unfortunately Canopy isn't a financially viable solution at >present. Charles Wu wrote: Just a thought here Is more or less regulation on facilities based providers a good or bad thing for WISPs (who are also facilities based providers) Keep in mind, supporting regulation for SBC / Comcast / whoever sets the precedent for regulation of our internal networks Lets think of one possible scenario It's 2016 and now WISPs have taken over (killed off SBC / Comcast) -- guys like Scriv and Harnish and DeReggi have hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of customers each, and WISPA is some national force that has huge influence on capital hill...now...what happens of a regulatory act gets passed forcing WISPs to wholesale their networks to SBC / Comcast below their cost just a thought -Charles That's an easy one. I divide my company into 25 divisions. When it comes time to do a provision for them I miss the first 7 appointments. On the 8th appointment we show up but tell them we don't have the right equipment and need to come back. Then in 6 weeks when we come back we do the install only to "find out" that someone didn't do any provisioning on the back end. We tell them we need to tell the networking dept to look at it. Networking refers it to a field tech who tells customer service to schedule an appoint but that doesn't happen because there is a language barrier between my field service agent and my outsourced customer service vendor on the other side of the world. They call back and we regenerate the request. Then we just put that request in a pile with the other "When we get around to it" requests. When they call back again we play dumb and tell them we need to send someone out to their customer's location to "check it out". Obviously we miss that appointment and as many more as we can before someone gets totally pissed and complains to the authorities or they stop calling. If they complain we finally do the install within the final alloted time by the regulatory agency and turn the customer on. Of course once they are on they will experience "network induced" "outages" as well as intermittant e-mail services (that's what happens when you turn port blocking on and off). On days where the e-mail port is turned on, we will throttle the bandwidth back to 40k . And when there are outages, we will take 6-10 days to fix them! Just like Verizon and the others! I'd LOVE to be just like them! :-D -B- -- Bob Moldashel Lakeland Communications, Inc. Re: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna
Paul, You may have a bad feed horn or you may have a bad radio. I would consider both before jumping off a bridge here.. Tell Radiowaves about your issue and see if you can send the feedhorns back for testing. They come right out and may be a quick test to see whats up. -B- Paul Hendry wrote: Bob, I hear what you're saying and have been through the figures a few times and even tried turning the power of the radio cards down to 1dB output (still unable to run both links simultaneously) but this doesn't explain why others are able to use the same radio cards with similar antennas with little to no problems. RE: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna
Really?? What models? We only use 5.8GHz and when we looked at Canopy in the past they where expensive and had limited throughput. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of G.Villarini Sent: 18 January 2006 10:53 To: 'WISPA General List' Subject: RE: [WISPA] Multiple Radios on Single antenna Canopy isnt economic viable?
