Simply put.. 

Write down your MUST HAVEs
Write down your would be nices
Write down what in your magical world if cost was not an option what you would 
like to have.

Then call, all of the WISPA members that offer billing systems, Azotel, Sonar, 
VISP, PowerCode, etc, and talk to them understand what you MUST have and then 
what you would like.  Then make your determination.  There is not nor has there 
ever been a perfect billing system.  But if you follow this approach, you will 
find one that fits within your cost model, within your budget, and has 
everything you must have and most of what would be nice.

What do we got out there for billing solutions?  My current one is not working 
out.  I've been using Freeside for a number of years now and I liked it but 
they don't have any support staff left and seem to be falling apart.  I've been 
constantly requesting an SSL renewal for 45 days and they just can't get it 
done.  It's beyond frustrating, time consuming and embarrassing try to explain 
to hundreds of customers why my payment site is not secure.  I can't take it 
anymore.  I need some recommendations on whats out there.  I want good support. 
 I need a solution with support.  What's everybody using?  What do you like and 
dislike about it?

Either its on or not..  they can change plans, but that’s about it.  I would 
not offer a off package, cause then you are not getting anything.  I understand 
the reason, but that is what DSL or cable would do, its either a package or its 
off.  And its only off it you are out of term.

A simplified overview of this configuration is a MikroTik CCR at the two PoPs 
(one on each end of a service area, running BGP), and MikroTik 1009 routers at 
each tower in the service area.

We're in the process of setting up our first RADIUS installation. For those of 
you who have set this up before, do you prefer to run a standalone FreeRadius 
server at each PoP, or would you run RADIUS on the CCR routers at each PoP? 
(Hopefully this isn't too ambiguous of a
question...) If load matters, the most data that could be coming into the CCRs 
is less than 1 Gbps - and more-likely to be closer to 300 Mbps than 1 Gbps.

That's at the top of my list right now. It does everything I want and it's dirt 
cheap. But I don't know if anybody has actually tried them, so until we start 
hearing reports, it's literally very promising. Probably worth trying, if I get 
a chance. At that price ($500 for 24 ports) you can't go wrong.

I'm not looking for copper, except maybe a couple ports for the local 
connection; I'm looking for lots of SFPs, something that could be useful for a 
rural FTTP build, dropped into a pedestal somewhere in the middle of noplace, 
to feed a cluster of nearby buildings. MikroTik isn't in that space yet; CRS 
seems to be lots of copper.

Thanks for the model number. I had looked on Planet's web site but there were 
no switches under "Braodband Communications"; that model was in the "LAN 
switch" section. The product name then says "Managed Metro Ethernet Switch" but 
it doesn't mention any MEF compliance, the application page says 
"core/department network" (though it uses SFPs, which is odd there), and its 
QoS features don't seem up to MEF standards (three-color marking, etc.). So it 
might work but I'm not sure if it really wants to be a carrier box.

What's the price? My recollection is that Planet was very very reasonable.

The other one that looks really interesting is the new IgniteNet Fusion Switch. 
The 20-SFP/4-SFP+ box is under $500, and seems to be aimed at Active carrier 
deployments. Of course it's kinda new so I don't know if anyone has it deployed 
yet. And I have no need for higher-layer features in a switch; I'd rather let a 
real router do that.

Link Technologies, Inc is a full service network engineering company 
specializing in Wireless and fiber internet operations. We service Cisco, 
MikroTik, Ubiquiti, Cambium, Telrad, Ruckus, and a host of platforms in order 
to design, engineer and meet the needs of the client's requirements. Most of 
our work is done remotely via phone and remote support, as well as occasional 
on-site trips. We offer a relaxed work environment outside of the city with 
fresh air and additional perks. Free lunch on Fridays, always casual; and a 
simple 9am to 5pm job schedule 5 days a week. Salary is dependent on skills and 
knowledge.
We are seeking individuals with network backgrounds, routing, firewalls, TCP/IP 
knowledge is required as well as experience with programming routers and 
firewall. Excellent verbal skills are required, as you will be required to talk 
with clients every day, assess what their needs are and what they wish you to 
program and then gain remote access to said routers and devices, and program as 
needed. Work based on ticketing system, prioritize tickets based on outages and 
client needs. Some days you will be in multiple 10gig Routers adding firewall 
protection, then helping a client out with DNS issues, then troubleshooting a 
BGP session. 99% of the time you will be conversing with clients and helping 
them with their network issues over the phone!

Yep, I do.   Maybe Miltary or other DoD contractors, but you may own the leased 
of the corp space, but still do not own the frequencies within.

corporate space.

If a Russian or Chinese spy snuck a MiFi into Lockheed Skunkworks and somehow 
passed their other forms of security, you'd be okay with them chugging away 
uploading whatever they found?

While I understand your reasoning, I would disagree.   If you could do this, 
for the security of a WISP, we will shut down all Access Points via Deauth 
attack that my Access Points can see.  Also note, I am not talking for the FCC, 
but for what I believe is right, in this case, you can’t own a location or area 
of the wifi bands, therefore, you can’t cause harmful interference, and a 
deauth attack would be harmful, and interference.  

 

I  can agree that you can detect it and shut it off on a port on your network, 
but you should not be able to interfere with other operations, regardless if it 
is your property or not.  Maybe that’s not the intent from those actions, but 
it’s clear that if it’s not on your network then you can’t do much about it.
Now, if they are on your property, sure you can tell them to turn it off or 
leave, but that’s another issue. lol

There is no mention of a blanket refusal. In the FCC citation, the fact that 
they're charging for Internet access is brought up every time the deauthing 
activity is.

In reading that second one, they also keep bringing up that Marriott charged 
for Internet (and a lot at that).

Specifically, such employees had used this capability to prevent users from 
connecting to the Internet via their own personal Wi-Fi networks when these 
users did not pose a threat to the security of the Gaylord Opryland network or 
its guests.

Sounds like security is a viable defense.

Dennis, I think you are taking this to literal. I have the right to detect 
and prohibit any wireless access point that is “connected” to my network. I do 
not have the right to bar an access point that is within my area of control 
from operating as long as it is not using my network for connectivity.

 

The hotel was trying to prevent guest and other business from using access 
points that were NOT connected to their network and thus avoiding paying them a 
fee.

Yep, you do not control the airwaves in your business, therefor you cannot

As I was saying, there are differafcnes in what they mean by Rouge AP.  If you 
do a deauth attack, its illegal, no matter what.  What you can do is detect it, 
and find the port that its plugged into your network and physically remove it 
or turn off that port.  (since its yours) no other attack is permitted, inside 
your business or not.

Containment is not.  

 

On the containment side.  Is there a way to contain in only the following two 
situations

 

SSID is same as yours

AP is plugged into your network.

While I understand your reasoning, I would disagree.   If you could do this, 
for the security of a WISP, we will shut down all Access Points via Deauth 
attack that my Access Points can see.  Also note, I am not talking for the FCC, 
but for what I believe is right, in this case, you can’t own a location or area 
of the wifi bands, therefore, you can’t cause harmful interference, and a 
deauth attack would be harmful, and interference.  

 

I  can agree that you can detect it and shut it off on a port on your network, 
but you should not be able to interfere with other operations, regardless if it 
is your property or not.  Maybe that’s not the intent from those actions, but 
it’s clear that if it’s not on your network then you can’t do much about it.
Now, if they are on your property, sure you can tell them to turn it off or 
leave, but that’s another issue. lol

There is no mention of a blanket refusal. In the FCC citation, the fact that 
they're charging for Internet access is brought up every time the deauthing 
activity is.

In reading that second one, they also keep bringing up that Marriott charged 
for Internet (and a lot at that).

Specifically, such employees had used this capability to prevent users from 
connecting to the Internet via their own personal Wi-Fi networks when these 
users did not pose a threat to the security of the Gaylord Opryland network or 
its guests.

Sounds like security is a viable defense.

In our corporate environment we have a Cisco wireless environment (indoors) and 
we match that with Cisco Prime for things like heat maps, rogue AP detection, 
and tracking wireless devices that are associated among other features.

There are two things that you need to think of and I’m sure different vendors 
call it different things, so let me go in depth on this.

 

One method is to find a access point that has been plugged into the switching 
system of a network.  Think, a business that someone plugged in a Linksys to or 
something.  This is accomplished typically, by sending that access point data, 
and seeing what “swtichport” it comes in on, then turning off that switch port. 
 THIS IS ALLOWED.  Basically detecting that a rouge AP is on managed or 
switched infrastructure.   This would NOT affect any kind of personal hotspot, 
such as a LTE hotspot, as there is no port to turn off, and there for the 
access point would operate normally, but it would also not be considered a 
rouge access point.

 

The other kind, is the one most people think of, find a rouge AP that should 
not be out there, and send a deauth attack to prevent it from using up air time 
and prevent people from using it.  In this manner, the access point can’t 
operator due to directed harmful interference, the deauth attack.  This is NOT 
ALLOWED.  This would be like me brining in a LTE hotspot setting it on the 
office desk and surfing with my cell phone or laptop on it vs the corp network. 
 

 

Eric, maybe you can fill us in on what the two features are called on Ruckus so 
that we know what their names are so that we don’t get them confused.

Many commercial solutions, such as Ruckus Wireless (where I work) have Rouge AP 
Detection capability built into their APs or controllers. There is nothing 
nefarious or illegal surrounding this feature. Let me know if you'd like to

Drop in Mikrotik MAP, put it on a IP, and place it on the same circuit
with a IP without UPS.  When it goes off-line, your monitoring system
tells you MAP without UPS is off-line, you know you don't have utility
power, what we do if you don't hae sitemonitors etc..  Simple, cheap..

Techs can sleep through a txt message though. A little more difficult to

Be careful with UBNT cameras now. They are/have disabled RSTP completly. So 
what you have to do now is backhaul your feed to a Unifi Video server then get 
your RTSP stream from there. It changed the game in how we are going to be 
doing cameras now as we were taking RTSP streams selectively and directly from 
the camera when we wanted the info so we didn’t have to waste 5Mbps per stream 
at all times to our head ends. Plus they will only work with Unifi Video which 
is lame as well.

 crowded, but at least this new radio seems
 to be efficient in how it uses the spectrum.  Any of these U-NII radios
 essentially transmits based on demand.  If traffic is 10 Mbps and the link
 is capable of 500 Mbps, it won't be on the air very much of the time.  So
 it doesn't need the frequency all to itself.  We are doing a lot of urban
 links and share the frequencies with all sorts of stuff, including Cable
 WiFi (all over, even below 5250, ugh), but it doesn't kill performance, at
 least for the type of moderate load applications (mostly cameras) we're
 supporting on 5 GHz.

 We do most of the backhaul on higher frequencies but 5 GHz is sometimes
 used as a backup to take over during rain fade.  During the storm last week
 that brought a tornado just a few subway stops from downtown Boston, we
 even lost 11 GHz links for time.  The rainfall was off the charts for the
 second time in a month.  But 5 Ghz links hardly noticed it.

 Also to Mimosa's credit, it comes with a 44 cm 25 dB dish, whose
 narrowness helps with frequency reuse.  It will probably produce a lot less
 clutter than outdoor access points, or even some indoor access points that
 use more power than necessary.  (We put a NanoBridge 5G25 on a hilltop and
 were able to pick up WLANs inside office towers four miles away.) And they
 are petitioning the FCC to open up 10 GHz under Part 90 (light licensing,
 like 3650).

Two-Rays means to use multi-path reflections .. if the radio can handle
that then you can turn it on.   Things like 900mhz etc. will reflect
very well, flat open terrain you will see rings of coverage if your
receiving radio is too low, as the reflection are good and bad.  But on
most 802.11 products, we would leave that off.

 

As far as Dual-pol or dual-slant would not change the RF propagation,
i.e. estimated signal would not change based on horizontal or vertical,
however, you have a better chance using dual of receiving said signal .

Its possible it will penetrate better, but overall the signal should be
the same.  How's this, without obstructions, the signal in any polarity
should be the same, the possibility of getting that signal though trees
goes up if you have multiple pol as passing though obstructions can
change the polarity of the wave.

What he wants, is, here is my customer location, how HIGH do I need to go
to get an acceptable signal.  If you are going though trees or near a hill,
the Fresnel zones include constructive and nonconstructive zones.
 sometimes going up 5 feet may help and sometimes it would harm.  These are
only in the event that you have Fresnel zone encroachment.

 We have been outsourcing email/hosting..etc to GoDaddy for 26 months now and
 I can honestly say that it has been a real relief for us. Their spam
 solution has been good as well. We pay about .60 cents a month per sub, but
 they have really nice webmail.

And I thought the ~32 cents that google charges was high.  Depends how
many email accounts you have I guess.

yep, normally we just look at large connections and limit overall bandwidth, 
the best way is still to bill per bit once over..  All of that would require 
intergration into a billing system, or a billing system that does it already :)

The best/simplest way to do so is by simply charging for overages on a
data plan, i.e. give them xxx GB incluced, overages are xxx.  VISP,
powercode are just a few billing platforms that would do this.

   But there is one big catch that we are missing.
 
   All outbound connections are using the IP of the Mikrotik

   of the assigned IP address. So the Ubiquiti client equipment

   right IP but the connection is using network address
 translation

   the router. We need the assigned IP to be accessible through
 the
   Mikrotik router so it shows as the IP address of the Ubiquiti
   client
   connection and so we can login to the Ubiquiti client radio
 from
   our
   network. Now the Ubiquiti client radio is hidden behind the
   Mikrotik
   router. What needs to be changed on the router or the radius
 to
   fix
   this?

This really comes down to OSPF settings on the link.  Things like on RF
failure drop Ethernet would help as well as if they had a min-modulation
option (i.e. if I drop below this performance i.e. modulation), drop the

What OSPF settings do you use to facilitate such a quick fail over to
tik backups? Also, this wouldn't switch over until the link completely
died so do you do anything special to have OSPF handle this or do you
have to wait for it to die? I can just see the link getting bad enough
that it will send the smallest amount of data but not drop thus limiting
the capacity to even less than a backup link in place. 

I remember chuck talking about something in the forums about dropping
ethernet past a certain signal threshold or when RF link drops.

while all this was happening and no lost packets.

 

There is also link path so you can see distance and actual signal of the
link right now with just basically mist.

 

You can almost graph the rainfall rate by the throughput on the MT
backup link J

Currently UBNT's site don't accept the KMLs that we generate.   We are
working with them to directly import it into their system, but they are
saying they won't get to it till the end of the year.. :(  We are
working with them, simply put, most of our maps have more polygons than
they are used to therefore their size limit prevents most of our maps
from being imported..  :)   But we are working on it with them.  Our
system is 99% done...

[WISPA] Cell Company Tower Contacts

I am looking for contacts and/or places to submit towers with colo space to
cell companies   i.e. if you have a location for a tower or a tower already
and you would like to see if you can lease space on it to cell companies,

[WISPA] SM ICMP Redirect Issue

[LTI - Dennis Burgess]

I have a client with a bunch of SMs that end up getting an ICMP redirect
error.  They enter a ICMP redirect to their routing table for their
monitoring servers, and the only way to clear that out is to reboot them,
any workarounds for this?

we can't remove it form the command line of the SM/AP :( rebooting it is
the only way to clear them :(  I have been turning routers to not issue the
ICMP redirect, just stinks that it happens and then 400 SMs can't be
monitored :(   Only ever had this issue with Canopy AP/SMs!

 Tell the routers not to issue ICMP redirects.  The routers can
 forward the packet to the best gateway.  The SM's route tables don't
 get confused when the best gateway changes.

 Depending on the SM, you may be able to write scripts to batch
 delete all but the default gateway and connected subnet routes.

MPLS does run over a IP backbone, but can use VPLS tunnels to create what
you are doing at layer 2.  Not to mention you would get all of
the benefit of Traffic Engineering, and internal routing giving you the
best of both worlds.  Why its sometimes called Layer 2.5, as it creates
tunnels inside your routed network, giving you fail over and multiple
paths.  With TE you can also reserve bandwidth etc. :)

 MPLS is a different protocol which, in the marketplace, largely
 competes with CE.  I know RouterOS supports MPLS.  But CE is different.

 Disregarding that CE is much more multi-protocol in support than
 MultiProtocol Label Switching, whose multi protocols are, in general,
 IP and IP, CE semantics include explicit CIR and EIR support, along
 with CBS and EBS (burst size) specification, on a per-virtual-circuit
 basis.  MPLS does not have CIR semantics; it just assigns relative
 priorities, and is thus fiddly when offered traffic varies.

 At large volumes (once you get past RouterOS into carrier-class
 products), CE is generally cheaper per bit than MPLS, at least if you
 don't buy Cisco, which pretty much owns MPLS (it's their creation).

 Hamburgers are not chicken, even if both are often served for lunch.

 With some implementations of MPLS (TE required) and a whole lot of
 fiddling, you can build an MPLS network that does pretty much what Carrier
 Ethernet does, given enough skilled labor to keep it running.  But Carrier
 Ethernet is a big new market, selling like crazy, and there are thus a lot
 of CE networks out there.  (Cable companies and ILECs are both competing
 for it.)


 Also, when you leave the ISP world and deal with the big-money IT
 custoemrs, they have their own MPLS networks, and need something to run
 them over.  CE makes a good substrate for MPLS.  Carrier MPLS does not
 carry customer MPLS as naturally.  In fact I think it would be fairly hard
 to configure that.  I know of some real users facing that, where a local
 fiber network went in using MPLS as its basic service, thinking that a
 government with its own MPLS would be able to use it, when they're
 different MPLS domains.  CE would be so much cleaner.  Unlike RINA, where
 there's never a conflict about recursing a layer, TCP/IP protocols tend to
 be written with brittle interfaces to others that are expected to be above
 and below them.

You can run MPLS tags inside a VPLS circuit.  You would simply build a VPLS
circuit on top of your MPLS network, the MPLS network is really the
transport, the VPLS is your private layer2 network (or if you got VRF or
BGP VPLS, you can run in layer3). Thus giving you the ability to run
another MPLS network over your existing MPLS network.  I am not disagreeing
that CE could be cleaner, but I am not versed in all operations of CE, so
its like comparing apples/oranges.The example that you used though was
VLANs though.


 So while you can argue the merits of MPLS vs. CE for a brand-new metro
 network, if you are looking for CPE to go onto an existing network, you
 don't put an MPLS box on a CE network, or vice-versa!  I'm looking at a
 (different) real CE network going up now where there's an open question of
 what CPE to use.  I see a market opening for a Routerboard-priced SFP box.
 But it doesn't matter if it costs $39, runs at 10 Gbps, washes windows and
 makes tea, if it doesn't mate with the network and its services.
