Michael, where is the file supposed to be?  You said you deleted it and all was
fine.  I don't find the file anywhere in WSTJx folders.

Could you explain .. "hopelessly broken" ... did you check to see if the
'worked B4' setting is checked under colors? Are you sure you didn't
wipe out your log files with the install?

More information is helpful so that the developers can figure if there

Hi All,

I need some help from the community to try and diagnose these issue. I

suspect it is an OpenSSL problem with old version of the OpenSSL DLLs

being used. It would be nice to package the OpenSSL libraries with

WSJT-X but fro legal reasons that is not possible so we are somewhat at

the mercy of what is installed on your systems.

Can those of you having LotW User Data file download errors on Windows,

that are easily repeatable, please do the following:

Open a Command prompt window (*not* Administrator mode),

type the following command at the prompt:

where libeay32.dll

and report back the results printed.

From the "Quick-Start Guide to WSJT-X 2.0", posted here
http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/Quick_Start_WSJT-X_2.0.pdf

At the bottom of page 2:

"We recommend that any serious use of DXpedition mode should use
WSJT-X v1.9.1 until December 10, 2018, and WSJT-X 2.0 thereafter."

This applies equally to both Fox and Hound.

Bingo...you got it Bill. That's why I only saw the error once.  First time I
started WSJT-X from the end of the installation and that's when I got the
error.  After that I was doing it from a JTSDK prompt so was getting
libeay32.dll from the path in there.
In Windows 10 cmd prompt no path is shown.C:\Users\mike>where libeay32.dll

I copied the most current libeay32.dll into the wsjtx bin directory but that
doesn't solve the problem.
Instead just needed ssleay32.dll in there and it works OK now.

[wsjt-devel] LoTW File Error

2018-10-17 Thread Neil Zampella

Hi All,

I too received the LoTW error.   The ARRL has just changed their sites
to use TLS 1.1, so this may also contribute to this issue.

Hi Mike,

thanks for the report. I am surprised that there are any redirects on
that URL so I suspect there is a defect lurking. Maybe server busy
return codes are being misinterpreted as redirect return codes. Let's
see if others get the same issue.

Was it on the automatic first download of the file or did it happen when
you have used the settings button to force a fresh download?

Maybe some proxy site can be established? ARRL LotW servers might not be

Hi Iztok,

nobody should need to fetch fresh versions of this file very often, the
currency of the data is certainly not critical especially as some users
only upload once and then never again and others may upload their whole
log for the first time next week; the data can only ever be an indication.

WSJT-X only gets the file automatically if it is not there, so after
initial downloads from WSJT-X v2.0.0 are done only when users bother to
go to settings and press the fetch button will a fresh download be
attempted.

I did consider triggering an automatic refresh when the file is, say, a
month old. We still have the option of doing that if users feel that the
data is out of date and we get tired of telling them to press the
"Fetch" button, hi hi.

Hi Mike,

you need both DLLs.

Most of those OpenSSL libs in other packages are packaged illegally, the
US prohibits export of strong cryptography without signing a special
agreement with them. Even then exporting to Iran, DRPK etc. is prohibited.

I will get the others to try installing a recent official OpenSSL
package and check that it fixes it for them. One further problem is that
although putting the DLLs in the WSJT-X bin directory will certainly
mean they get used, that will also interfere with the uninstaller which
will not be allowed to delete them and therefore cannot clean up the
install directories. OTOH putting the OpenSSL DLLs on PATH will
potentially break other applications - DLL Hell in its worst form.

Hi John -

It looks like I forgot to comment out a debug print to fort.81. On the Mac, you
can get around this by running from within the application bundle. For example,
my install directory is ~/Builds/wsjtx/install, so I would do this to run wsjtx:

cd ~/Builds/wsjtx/install/wsjtx.app/Contents/MacOS

Hi Georg,

we are aware of the issue with the macOS version of WSJT-X, it is due to
some diagnostic code left in inadvertently. It is possible to work
around the issue by starting the application from the command line
rather than the application bundle. Something like:

cd /Applications/WSJT-X/Contents/MacOS
./wsjtx

You may have to install the application away from the /Applications
directory as well, you can drag'n'drop it onto the desktop for example.

Hi Joe

In your list of changes below Auto Log is noted as available for contests.
In the Quick Start Guide this limitation is not noted, as far as I can
see.

Just completed a few 77 bit QSOs with rc3 where I have selected Auto Log
and the manual prompt still appears.

Personal preference would be to have Auto Log available generally, with
perhaps a brief notification that QSO had been logged.

the LotW file is a CSV file provided by the ARRL that contains the date

OK...does appear all paths should reset to zero.
So perhaps building a string of all the redirects and showing that on the the
error message for somebody to test that can show what it's doing might be
useful.  I can't seem to reproduce the error now.

Hi Mike,

I don't follow, the count is set to zero just before download() is invoked, how
is that not setting it to zero every time a download cycle is attempted? It's
right there in the code fragment you quoted.

Rebooted -- now seems to be working.  So much for not having to reboot
Linux.  If you are switching between RC2 and RC3 on Linux it seems that
you need to reboot.  There is probably a file (the log file perhaps)
still open.

Re: [wsjt-devel] LoTW color missing

2018-10-17 Thread Chuck Furman
I like the use of red for My Call in Message, but I find black a poor
choice against a red background. I would much prefer white as in this
example: My Call in Message.

It would be nice to have the ability to change the font color, even if it's
just a choice of black or white, and maybe a bold option as well.

I know the GUI is a low priority for developers, but this is a bit
annoying. My current workaround was to change the intensity of the red
background to make the black font a bit easier to see.

Tried a reboot and LoTW message continues. No problem, just click OK and
move on.

I installed RC3 in a subfolder of WSJTX so I could switch between 1.9.1,
RC1, RC2 in previous subfolders and now RC3 for comparison.

I did notice that a couple of the configurations I had created in RC2 were
not brought forward to RC3. No biggie to recreate.

[wsjt-devel] LoTW color missing

2018-10-17 Thread WB5JJJ
Without the LoTW downloaded file, all users are in black. Non LoTW users
are no longer reddish.

Michael, where is the file supposed to be? You said you deleted it and all
was fine. I don't find the file anywhere in WSTJx folders.

There is no empty box at the top of the panel. I pressed reset highlighting.
I am only seeing turquoise and light turquoise (along with the standard
green, yellow and red). I am not seeing new grids but I'm not sure if that
is because it's not working or if I'm just not decoding any new grids.

Hi Don and Jarmo,

looks like this is a defect, if you go to "Settings->Colors" do you see
an empty box at the top of the panel? If so please report back and also
try pressing the "Reset Highlighting" button below the empty panel, does
that fix the problem?

[wsjt-devel] WSJT-X v2.0.0 RC3 LotW Users Data File errors

2018-10-17 Thread Bill Somerville

Re: [wsjt-devel] Color Highlighting

2018-10-17 Thread Dave J Barnes
It works on some entries in my log but not others.  It flags some LOTW
users but ignores others, etc. Also the left panel flashes when updating.

Doesn't matter what band.

The log file was cleaned before I started using RC2.  There should not
be any bad entries in the log file.  I switched back to RC2 to verify
that highlighting my current log file works correctly.

This is on Ubuntu 18.04.

I'll switch back to RC3 to try to get some examples.

Hi Dave,

we need something more helpful that "appears hopelessly broken". Are
any decodes being highlighted as not worked before? Is it just DXCC,
or grids, or unique calls? Is it just the band specific versions that
are not working or the all bands versions? Are the highlighting
options you expect to see enabled in "Settings->Colors"?

If you have a specific example with data to back your assertion i.e.
the lines in your wsjtx_log.adi that are there/missing that make the
highlighting wrong, that would be most helpful.

Hi Don,

the LotW file is a CSV file provided by the ARRL that contains the date an
time of last successful upload of all LotW users, we use it to determine if
a callsign heard is a likely to upload their logs to LotW.

As far as I know you are the first to report an SSL handshake error, what

Hi Mike,

I don't follow, the count is set to zero just before download() is

Re: [wsjt-devel] LoTW color missing

2018-10-17 Thread WB5JJJ
Sorry guys, but I really liked the reddish color for NON LoTW users so they
do NOT stand out - easier to ignore. But I prefer the black text on all
background colors due to my aging eyes color perception. But I do like
being able to change the Rx text to WHITE on RED as its so much easier for
me to read.

I have changed the LoTW user text color to black for ease of reading
overall. So I will again have to check the flags on JTAlert for LoTW
information.

I downloaded the file and put it in it's proper place and the error no
longer happens on startup. Thanks for the tip.

The "Quick-Start Guide to WSJT-X 2.0" has been updated and extended.  If
you plan to use the beta-test release candidate RC3, be sure to read
this entire guide first:

A one-hour "FT8 mock contest" will be held next week: Thursday, October
25, 0200-0300 UTC (that's Wednesday evening, NA time).  Watch for a
separate announcement with more details.

We look forward to your feedback on WSJT-X 2.0-rc3.  Please help us by

Hi Mike,

thanks for the report. I am surprised that there are any redirects on
that URL so I suspect there is a defect lurking. Maybe server busy
return codes are being misinterpreted as redirect return codes. Let's
see if others get the same issue.

Was it on the automatic first download of the file or did it happen when

Hi George,

the sense of the LotW highlighting has been changed such that
highlighting is on for known LotW users. This is mainly to be consistent
with other applications that do similar highlighting. You now can also
turn the highlighting on and off as well as set the minimum number of
days since last upload that characterizes a call as a LotW user. See the
"Settings->Colors" panel for the controls. You also have
"Menu->View->Color highlighting scheme" as an on screen aide memoir.

The file is fetched into the log file directory, it's not there because
your download failed. if you want to kill off the download error you can
fetch the file manually from
https://lotw.arrl.org/lotw-user-activity.csv and put it into your WSJT-X
log file directory ("Menu->File->Open log directory").

Hi Mike,

there's no need to delete the CSV file, the "Fetch" button the the
"Settings->Colors" panel will attempt to download it regardless of
whether it is currently in place. The file was there in v2.0.0 RC2 but
in a different directory which was not a writeable location as it was

Hi Dave,

we need something more helpful that "appears hopelessly broken". Are any

grids, or unique calls? Is it just the band specific versions that are
not working or the all bands versions? Are the highlighting options you
expect to see enabled in "Settings->Colors"?

If you have a specific example with data to back your assertion i.e. the

highlighting wrong, that would be most helpful.

[wsjt-devel] LotW Users Data file

2018-10-17 Thread Iztok Saje

Hi Don (and others)!

ARRL started to publish lotw users database in August 2017.
File is lotw-user-activity.csv.

It used to be updated every Sunday, but they skipped last one,
so current is from October 7th, 2018.

Maybe some proxy site can be established? ARRL LotW servers might not be
happy by 10 WSJTX users downloading new file every two hours
before they learn their schedule?

Records look like this:
S52D,2018-10-07,08:56:03
giving time of last LotW upload.

Best 73, CU
Iztok, S52D

p.s. I use this file a lot to generate "whom to call" list for my grid chase
activity.

Hi Mike,

you need both DLLs.

Hi Ron,

firstly, not all users will suffer the issues you are describing, it
will depend on your system setup, particularly if you have old versions
of the OpenSSL libraries installed (note this is a bad thing since those
old libraries may well be vulnerable to the well documented Heartbleed
security flaw).

When you install WSJT-X v2.0.0 RC3, if you do suffer the non-fatal issue
then see my post here:

recommended solution which is straightforward and working fine for all
those that have tried it that I know of.

[wsjt-devel] A user Interface nit

2018-10-17 Thread Ted Gisske
I spent a good portion of my career designing user interfaces. I was often, and
accurately, described by colleagues as a “UI Nazi” for enforcing UI consistency
standards. With that background in mind, please permit me a suggestion:

I love the chroma-coding of the text windows. That allows a lot more
information to be communicated to the operator without a lot of extra text. The
ability to independently set the text foreground and background colors is great
for a cataract-riddled geezer like me! I have a hard time seeing black text on
a deep magenta background, so being able to set the text color to white is a
great aid.

The fly in the ointment is when the text color is captured by the LoTW flag. If
the station being displayed is on LOTW, the text is always set to the text
color designated for that case. If the LoTW text is set to something dark, then
only pastel background color-coding works well. Conversely if the LoTW text is
set to something light, then only dark background colors work well. The LoTW
text color effectively limits you to half of the possible color palette.

A possible way around this problem, as well as make the UI more consistent,
could be to indicate LoTW participation with some sort of discreet text, such
as a “+”, or something like that, in the call field, or elsewhere in the
callout line. That is how VE7CC User does it, and it works well. That way there
is the flexibility to set background and text colors independently of the text
color chosen for LoTW tagging.

Ted

[wsjt-devel] Color Highlighting

2018-10-17 Thread Dave J Barnes
RC3 on Ubuntu 18.04 AMD64, empty log file so everything would be
highlighted.

(1) Highlighting NEW DX and NEW DX ON BAND does not work. Nothing
highlighted.  Yes those types are enabled in the color settings.

(2) Can set foreground color on LOTW only.  Can not set foreground
colors elsewhere.  Text color stays black regardless of foreground color
in settings other than for LOTW.

(3) If you set an LOTW background you can not change it back to
transparent without resetting all of the other colors to default.

(4) If you set an LOTW background then the left panel flickers like it
is drawing the first color and then drawing the LOTW background color
over it.

(5) I want to set up: NEW DX -or- NEW DX ON BAND -or- NEW GRID -or- NEW
GRID ON BAND -and- LOTW.  Anything I set up gives trouble.  For example,
with the default settings, an LOTW station calling me would have a red
background with red text on the right panel.  You can not see who is
calling.  Similarly, a new GRID LOTW station calling CQ would have red
text on an orange background in the left panel.  Almost invisible.  How
is this new highlighting feature intended to be used?  Can you set a
default color scheme that works?

de Mike W9MDB

Hi Mike,

the too many redirects issue is that WSJT-X correctly detects that Qt
has no SSL/TLS support (no OpenSSL libraries that it can use - it needs
v1.0.x) and tries an http request. Sane web servers would serve the URL
as http but the ARRL have stopped serving http, I assume as part of
their updates to drop TLS v1.0. They redirect http requests to an https
equivalent URL which the code dutifully retries as http because it can't
talk SSL/TLS. That endless loop is terminated by a hard limit on
redirect attempts.

I should probably change the code to only try http if SSL/TLS is not
available and not on redirects but that will not get the file, just a
different error.

The other error about a failed SSL handshake is where an old OpenSSL
v1.0.x library is used that does not support TLS v1.1 or later, the ARRL
web server will reject attempts at SSL v* or TLS v1.0 connection handshakes.

Re: [wsjt-devel] RC3 sequence problem

I thought it was just me. Yes, if you get an RRR or RR73 a second time
AFTER you have sent 73, the auto seq reverts back to sending signal reports
again. This is extremely frustrating. You can't blame the other station.
Due to QSB or QRM, he/she may not have received your 73, so naturally they
will send another RRR.

Thanks all for the reports. As expected the problem is that some users have no
OpenSSL libraries installed and others have a variety of versions supplied with
various other packages.

There is no perfect solution to this, for example:

1) It would be great to package the right OpenSSL libraries with WSJT-X but US
state and local legislation about strong cryptography software prevents us from
doing that easily.

2) We could recommend that users install the OpenSSL libraries separately and
copy them into the WSJT-X bin directory but this will cause problems for the
WSJT-X uninstaller when later upgrading.

3) We could recommend that users install the OpenSSL libraries separately and
add their location to the PATH environment variable but other applications are
likely to undo that by doing the same with the version of OpenSSL they need.

4) We could recommend that users install the OpenSSL libraries separately and
let the installer copy them to the system directory, this is not usually
recommended as it may break other applications.

So I am going to go with the least bad of the above options which I think is
(4). Instructions below.

By the way, the reason OpenSSL is required is that the ARRL web server will not
respond to insecure requests (http) and only serves secure URLs (https). If an

Those experiencing LotW download errors can try the following:

Run the downloaded installer taking default options and accept the option to
install the libraries into the Windows system directory.

Please report back on if this solves the issues? You will probably need to

Hi Ron,

thanks for the issue report. It is a defect which we are aware of and for
which we are sorry, particularly as you lost a wanted QSO.

With non-standard calls WSJT-X should probably be replying to CQ calls with

firstly, not all users will suffer the issues you are describing, it will
