The breakdown of the family stands at the head of the poverty cycle.
Children of single parents are many times more likely to be brought up
in poverty than the offspring of functional families.

Failure to obtain education, training, or skills is a certain route
to a impoverished life. I have a daughter who is a pharmacist. The day
she graduated, Wal-Mart kicked her 26 K wage up over 50K. Two months
later, the very day she passed her Registry they made her a manager at a
six figure salary. This from Wal-Mart, which has been called "vicious
and predatory." OTOH I have a niece who dropped out of high school and
gave birth to a child out of wedlock. Guess which one will live a life
of poverty?

And no, I do not blame corporate America. If Wal-Mart paid their
door greeters six figures, they'd be bankrupt in less than a year!

All in all, I'd say the root cause of poverty in most cases is a
failure to accept responsibility for our actions.

Samurai ancestry as indicated from some of the emblems worn on the kimonos.
Bill's ancestry on the other hand only killed:

   * Yankees during the War of Northern Agression;
   * Brits during the American Revolution;
   * Indians during various Indian Wars;
   * Frenchmen during the Hundred Years War;
   * Blackamoors during Medieval Spain;
   * Assorted Muslims during the Crusades
   * Both Saxons and Normans during the Conquest of England;
   * Assorted Germanic Tribesmen who defied Charlmagne.
   * and other miscellaneous villains in conlicts too numerous to mention.
Other than that, we come from a long peaceful lineage. Yep, a
peace-loving bunch we are.

[ZION] Breaking the charter?

2003-10-15 Thread Grampa Bill in Savannah
Dear ones,
I received the following by email. It probably violates the charter
for me to forward it... but does anyone know the truth of this? I am
incensed!
===
 HOW ABOUT TOLERANCE FOR ALL?

Some Muslims wear sacred clothing. So do some Jews. The same for
Native Americans and some Hindus and others. Bits of cloth or string
that are physical reminders of God and his bond
with man. Sacred things, really, prayer shawls or beads, head
coverings or aprons, medicine bags. Things that are special to people,
 honorable and good things.
 Things that should be respected.

One would not, for example, rip the yarmulke from a Jewish man's head
and mockingly fling it like a Frisbee. Nor would you wear a yarmulke as
a spoof or joke. Certainly not as an attack on Judaism. Not as a
mockery of Jews and their faith.
Yet something like that happened this weekend. In front of thousands
of people in one of America's great cities. An act of religious
desecration, bigotry and discrimination. And the perpetrators boast of
it to the press. It was in Salt Lake City. And it was against Mormons.
And somehow that makes it acceptable.
Here's what happened. Over the weekend, Mormons gathered for what they
call "general conference." It is a twice-a-year meeting that draws tens
of thousands to Salt Lake City and is broadcast around the world to an
audience in the low millions. It is a worship service. It is sacred and
special to them. And each year it is protested.
So-called Christian evangelists stand on the sidewalk outside the
Mormon meetings and shout rude condemnations of the religion to the
thousands who pass in and out. It is an odd spectacle, unmatched in
American society. To think that crude protesters would stand outside a
mosque or synagogue, or a cathedral or church, and harass worshipers and
denounce a religion is just beyond the pale.
It is an act of indefensible religious bigotry. And yet it happens,
and is often applauded and boasted of.
This column started with a mention of sacred clothing. Well, Mormons
have sacred clothing, too. Like a variety of religious garments, it is
worn against the skin. It is a type of underclothing. They don't talk
about it. They don't show it to people. They keep it sacred. Like
virtually all-religious clothing, it is a specific reminder of promises
made to God. Like virtually all religious clothing, it is precious and
significant to the people who wear it.
Well, Sunday the evangelists had some. Maybe six guys, Baptist
ministers, mocking the Mormons as they came out of a meeting. Shouting
rude things to people coming out of church. And they had these sacred
garments. And one supposed minister of the gospel was wiping his
backside with them, laughingly treating them like toilet paper as
thousands who held them sacred walked by.
Can you see that being done to a prayer shawl in front of a Synagogue,
or a prayer rug in front of a mosque? Wouldn't all decent people
 publicly denounce that sacrilege?
He also draped them around his neck, and pretended over and over to
sneeze into them. And loudly blow his nose into them. While families and
 children walked past.
 Stop for a moment.

Lay aside what you do or don't think about Mormons. But was that right?

More to the point, was that Christian? Is that what Jesus would do? Is
that what any decent person of any faith would do? Absolutely not. It
is wrong, bigoted and un-American. No matter who it's against.
It was an affront. It smelled like the bigotry of the Klan and the
Third Reich. And yet the ministers boasted of it to reporters and posed
for pictures and no one in the Utah or American religious, media or
civil rights communities has condemned it.
And, oddly, two worshipers were taken away in handcuffs. One man,
dressed in his church clothes, walked past in the crowd, saw the insults
and desecrations, and grabbed the piece of clothing. To protect it. He
was charged with robbery and taken to jail. Half an hour later another
worshiper similarly grabbed a molested garment and attempted to take it
away. He was unsuccessful and waiting police stepped in to take him into
 custody.
And that's the world we live in. You are harangued for your beliefs and
arrested for defending them. And the bigotry of our society is
illustrated by how selectively we practice tolerance.

=
Grampa Bill comments:
I think part of our problem in coming to a consensus is that we are
tending toward dividing all jobs into white collar or blue collar
without acknowledging that there are broad gradations within each. For
several years I refused to accept a twenty percent pay raise and be put
into a salaried slot. Fact is, I was making better than thirty percent
above base in my "blue collar" when my OT was calculated in. The "white
collar" position would have amounted to a pay cut.
The military comes to mind. They make a broad distinction between
the "blue collar" enlisted men and the "white collar" officers. Yet a
twenty year Command Sergeant Major certainly makes more money and
probably has more prestige than a shave-tail Second Lieutenant fresh out
of OCS.
I believe we err when we paint the picture with too broad a brush.
Both the white collar and the blue collar positions contain men who are
put upon and treated unfairly, and both have men who are not worth a
fourth what they are actually compensated.

It is my understanding that at one point in the early days of the

Disputes between the Bishops and the WPs regarding authority and

As a former Bishop of the Savannah First Ward, I tend to agree.
While I was given the keys to receive revelation on behalf of the ward,
I was not given revelation on behalf of Brother Smith's family. Brother
Smith himself solely had that right. Incidently, as I understand the
order of the Church, neither the Stake President, the Area President,
The Brethren, nor the Prophet hold such keys. They are given only to
Brother Smith. Of course, Sister Smith had the right to revelation in
living her own life.
About all a bishop can do is look to see if the members are

...according to them, some families within Israel have been singled

What is the opinion of the group?
=
Grampa Bill comments:
Reading the first several answers to the Good Major's query, there
seems to be near unanimity that the doctrine being taught is false. I'm
not quite sure. True enough, the question is posed in such a manner as
to elicit near visceral outrage, but lets look at some other aspects.

First, let's get rid of that "rule and reign over the rest of us"
line. Christ taught that to rule is to serve and set the example in
washing His Apostles' feet. Seems this ruling and reigning business
ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Next, it is obvious there are certain families both within and
outside the Chirch that rise to and remain in positions of prominence.
The Smith family comes to mind immediately. Prophets, Patriarchs,
Apostles, Seventies and numerous General Officers of the Church have
arisen from this family over a number generations. It is not limited to
the Smiths. Check the Pratts and the Youngs, the Tanners, et al. In
fact, this phenomenon is so prevalent that if the doctine of Royal Blood
is not true, the Church would seem to be a hot bed of nepotism.

One of the great blessings one seeks is to raise up a righteous
posterity. If blessings follow righteousness, one would expect to see
prominence in certain families.

I have read that Colonel George Reade, a prominent pre-Revolutionary
War patriot, fathered a number of U.S. Presidents and a brace of General
Authorities and Officers of the Church. He is also one of my ancestors
and whatever prominence his descendants enjoy certainly skipped my
branch and generation.

I think the main thing is that certain folks, by their pre-existant
and/or mortal righteousness merit having some of the "great and noble"
spirits to be born into their posterity.

I don't know that I have expressed this well, but I 'spect ther is
something to this doctrine regardless of how distastefully it might have
been expressed.

the Fifty was to take the lead of the Church after JS's martyrdom.
Almost childish ramblings and jockeying for position. Last meeting in
late 1800s after which it dissolved. I don't believe a word of it.
Co50 was undeniably real. JS spent much time and effort establishing

even as the Church is to prepare the world spiritually for Christ's

quiet discreet manner and so the group mocked itself and publicly
dissolved while continuing its work unseen by the world. I suspecct that
a great deal of the world's wealth and resources are controlled today by
the Co50 awaiting the time to publicly turn it over to the Lord and His
prophet.
If the Co50 was what it appeared to be, s group of buffoons who
sqabbled and fought until it fell apart, then JS spent a lot of time and
energy on what became a total failure. Can't believe that. Was real/is real.
Back to Danites or Avenging Angels. I believe they did/do what
had/has to be done. That does NOT mean midnight visits to everybody
whose testimony was/is weak or who was reluctant to allow his daughter

"license to kill?" Probably, but used EXTREMELY infrequently, and only
when the necessity approached/s that of Nephi wasting Laban.
Today, I 'spect there is some shifting back and forth between Church
Security and the Danites with Church Security providing a training
ground and a ripe field for recruitment of Danite operatives.
All of the above is probably merely the fevered ravings of a

The temple work for the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of

appeared to Wilford Woodruff when he was president of the St. George
Temple. President George Washington was ordained a high priest at that
time. You will also be interested to know that, according to Wilford

It is my understang that others of the founding fathers were

Your addition to my analogy is germane. I suppose the crux of the matter is
whether, on average, the "typical" African is better off or worse off as a result of
western interference. My guess is that he is better off. Certainly the crumbs did not
fall evenly. And there might be a few who are actually worse off, but on average, I
believe the colonial powers improved the lot of most Africans even if that was not
their intention.

Grampa responds,
The analogy, I suppose, would be that of a rich uncle, who when he visits, leaves
money and other goodies, but who is prone to belching and tooting and even interfering
with the discipline of the kids.
The question is whether we are better off with his visits or not. This depends on
where we are on the socio-economic spectrum. If we are young, naive, and flat broke,
his visits are to our benefit, regardless of how annoying they might be. As we age and
become more sophisticated, his visits are less of a blessing and more of an annoyance.
I believe that pre-colonial Africa needed all the help that could be given. And the
point that not all Africans have received of the Colonial powers' largess seems
irrelevant. Most are at least somewhat better off.
