Re: [Zope-Annce] Zope 2.8.9, Zope 2.9.7, Zope 2.10.3 released

2007-03-26 Thread Andreas Jung

I uploaded corrected versions of the Zope 2.9.7 and 2.10.3 tar-balls.
The tar-balls released yesterday contained a bug that caused
a startup failure when using zopectl start.

 don't do this again.

Don't do what? I was about to agree, as I don't think re-releasing
under the same version number was correct: the new releases should be
2.9.7.1, 2.10.3.1, or something similary (or bump to 2.9.8, 2.10.4).

this bug is so obvious to catch that I have some serious doubts about
your software testing process. are you releasing totally untested code?
can we trust your releases in the future, will you change sth in your
 process?

The testing that gets done is not done from released tarballs, but
from subversion checkouts. This was a bug in the process that created
the tarball from a checkout, and not in the underlying Zope software
itself. I *think* it also affected only those who build and install
Zope as root, although I can't tell for sure, since the tarballs have
been replaced. At any rate, I *never* build, install, or run Zope as
root, and hence would never have noticed the problem, even if I were
doing the releases myself.

Releasing software as a security fix that does not even start makes you
look like a moron, I am sorry to say.

Too harsh. Certainly nobody likes having released a brown bagger, but
mistakes do happen.

[Zope-dev] Retracting Zope 2.9.7, Zope 2.10.3 releases because of a zopectl start problem

2007-03-26 Thread Andreas Jung

I decided to retractthe latest 2.9.7 and Zope 2.10.3 releases
for now because of this problem:

http://mail.zope.org/pipermail/zope/2007-March/171086.html

I could confirm that zopectl start does not work properly.
zdaemon spawns the second process however this one seems to go
own immediately. Unfortunately I could not find the reason so far.
Any help will be appreciated.

At the risk of saying something obvious...

strace showed, that the spawned process exits with

raise ValueError('No REQUEST parameter in callable signature')

which is part of the postonly(callable) function in
lib/python/AccessControl/requestmethod.py.

Wasnt this part of the hotfix?

I guess that someone has already found this too, but I share it
nonetheless: 'ApplicationManager.manage_restart()' in
'lib/python/App/ApplicationManager.py' does not have any 'REQUEST'
parameter. The new 'postonly()' function therefore raise the above
mentionned error. Changing the method signature to:

manage_restart(self, URL1, REQUEST=None):

makes Zope start. 'REQUEST' is not used in this method, though.
However, it is also not used in 'manage_shutdown()' but appears in its
signature. I guess that adding it to 'manager_restart()' should not have
any side-effect.

@postonly uses the REQUEST parameter, that's why it demands the
parameter being present.

Tres Seaver added the decorators to the Control_Panel and must've
missed the REQUEST parameter on manage_restart, which only comes into
effect when running the zope process with zopectl start.

The penalty for this bug: two bottles of wine.
The workaround is to add REQUEST as optional parameter to manage_restart()?

Re: [Zope] smart development debugging

2007-03-26 Thread Roberto Scelzo
I have to thank you all for your valuable suggestions.

to aj:
If you have the freedom to choose your Zope version:

  - start with Zope 2.10 + CMF 2.1

  - put your templates etc. into the filesystem using portal_skins

  - use Zope 3 technology together with CMF: Zope 3 schema + formlib
for creating content-types, forms etc...

  - avoid Plone if you really don't need it. Don't start with Plone
*just because it looks nice* and if you really need only a small
subset
   of the Plone functionality...

 -aj

Yes, I do have the freedom to choose which Zope version to run on my
machines and I'm going to focus my attention on the setup you suggested.

to chris:
One 'kickstart' way to get started with something that will build out
a Zope environment in a repeatable way on UNIX (Linux/BSD/Mac/
probably Solaris) is available at http://www.plope.com/static/misc/
buildit_example-20070314-1.tgz. It requires buildit at http://
 www.agendaless.com/Members/chrism/software/buildit/ . We use this
to
allow individual developers to have dev instances on their own
systems.

 - C

Thank you, I'll take a look at that too.

to Marco/Eric:
what you suggested is just what I was thinking about even if I still
have
to understand how to put together all your suggestions to provide a
comfortable
and painless development environment to my devs.
PAFlow looks really interesting to me since one of our projects
is directly related to the local PA.

Again, thank you all.

[Zope] bin/zopectl start not working for Zope 2.9.7

2007-03-26 Thread Maurits van Rees
Hi,

Maybe I just need a hit with a cluebat here. But I just downloaded
the new Zope 2.9.7 tar ball (thanks Andreas and others who worked on
that!). When I try bin/runzope or bin/zopectl fg or debug everything
looks fine. But bin/zopectl start does nothing.

Has anyone else seen this?

I did the usual dance of ./configure, make, (sudo) make install. The
configure options were:

./configure --with-python=/usr/bin/python --prefix=/opt/zope/zope2.9.7

Then I made a zope instance in ~/instances/t
/opt/zope/zope2.9.7/bin/mkzopeinstance.py

Then start the zope instance:

~/instances/t $ bin/zopectl start
. daemon process started, pid=15466

Then nothing seems to happen. No log file is being made:

~/instances/t $ tail -f /home/maurits/instances/t/log/event.log
tail: cannot open `/home/maurits/instances/t/log/event.log' for reading: No
such file or directory
tail: no files remaining

There is one process running:

$ pgrep -lf zope
15465 /usr/bin/python /opt/zope/zope2.9.7/lib/python/zdaemon/zdrun.py -S
/opt/zope/zope2.9.7/lib/python/Zope2/Startup/zopeschema.xml -b 10 -d -s
/home/maurits/instances/t/var/zopectlsock -x 0,2 -z /home/maurits/instances/t
/home/maurits/instances/t/bin/runzope

and after a while that stops.

bin/zopectl fg meanwhile starts up zope just fine.

An alternative is to run 'make inplace' and 'make instance' instead
of 'make install'.

Okay, so I removed the instance, unpacked a clean tar ball and did
configure, make, make inplace, make instance. Again, bin/zopectl
start does not work, and foreground works fine.

I also just downloaded 2.8.9. Let's first check if that might have
the same problem. Ah, it at least has another problem:

$ /opt/zope/zope2.8.9/bin/mkzopeinstance.py
...
[Errno 13] Permission denied: './README.txt'

and indeed:

$ ls -l /opt/zope/zope2.8.9/skel/README.txt
-rw--- 1 root root 481 2007-03-25 11:33 /opt/zope/zope2.8.9/skel/README.txt

Ah, and when fixing this with a chmod some more errors like that creep up.

So after installing 2.8.9 as root or with sudo, mkzopeinstance does
not work. This has happened to me with other Zope versions as well.
At least I remember reporting this earlier; and seeing it solved
fortunately. :) It would seem the root source has not been
found/fixed though. :(

Any chance of fixing this? Need any help Andrea?

So after installing 2.8.9 as root or with sudo, mkzopeinstance does
not work. This has happened to me with other Zope versions as well.
At least I remember reporting this earlier; and seeing it solved
fortunately. :) It would seem the root source has not been
 found/fixed though. :(

Ah, it looks fixed on the 2.9 branch, but not 2.8. In the sdist_tgz
target of the makefile the 2.9 branch has these two extra lines, which
I think need to be added to the 2.8 branch too:

   ${FIND} . -type f -exec chmod a+r {} \;
   ${FIND} . -type d -exec chmod a+rx {} \;

Meanwhile, this 2.8.9 has the same problem that I reported for 2.9.7:
bin/zopectl start does not work, though 'fg' does work.

Right - because the Zope 2.8 branch is going to die. I don't think that

[Zope] presenting content in Zope generated outside

2007-03-26 Thread Alan

Dears List-mates,

I have a program that process some data analysis and it's able to
generate html docs to be visualised in a web browser.

What I am trying to figure out is a way of wrapping this external html
docs inside Zope/Plone. Trying to explain it better: I would like to
present such data analysis results (and for that I can play with its
code in order to generate just the body block for example) as if it
were part of our plone website, i.e. using our website's layout with
its header and side columns etc.

That external data (and html doc) is accessible via LocalFS among
others reasons because they are big and temporary.

I am aware of importing html via FTP or webdav or even considering to
code a python external method to generate the data analysis results
independently of my external program, but I guess these approach
involves using a lot of ZODB resources, besides processing time, that
frankly I would like to avoid. Accessing data via LocalFS or similar
and just turn them presentable inside a zope website seems to be the
natural way, but I am missing how to do it.

I thought about using frames, but it sounds even worse. BTW, is Zope
able to work with frames?

Another possibility I imagined was if I could fill my external html
files with '!-- @import ...' inside e.g. head block, but I really
don't know how far I can go with that idea, since my first tests
showed me that it can works for font style (*.css files) but then I
don't know what else to do, for example, to get the side menu and
calendar.

Anyway, any commentary here would be very appreciated. Sorry if I
couldn't express me better but I am prone to extend any point here if
you wish.

I thank very much in advance any help.

Cheers,
Alan

Yes. I have an application that has 5 different ZCatalogs. The same
problem occurs in 3 of them. It seems that a ZCatalog with less than ~500
records is ok, but the len problem increases with the number of records in
the ZCatalog:

actuallendiff

108 108 0
322 322 0
613 607 6
1842 1820 22
3628 3590 38

It looks like the __len__ method in Catalog.py is not returning the
correct value - it returns self._length() which is set by the following
method (also in Catalog.py):

def migrate__len__(self):
migration of old __len__ magic for Zope 2.8
if not hasattr(self, '_length'):
n = self.__dict__['__len__']()
del self.__dict__['__len__']
self._length = BTrees.Length.Length(n)

Is this migration code for pre-2.8 catalogs. This change was necessary
because the new ExtensionClass implementation did not longer work
with the scary implementation of the __len__ functionality of the Catalog
class.

If the result remains the same after reindexing the catalog there might
be

an issue with the increment/decrement calls of the _length counter
with catalogObject/uncatalogObject...however no idea why...

Clearing the catalog and then running 'Find Objects' returns the same
incorrect number every time (at least the error is consistent!). I have
also loaded records into the ZCatalogs via a python script/external method
and the record counts are exactly the same as with the 'Find Objects'.

I wrote a bunch of unittests and could not recreate the problem, so i
reinstalled zope and rebuilt the application infrastructure (ZCatalogs, etc)
and reloaded all the data from scratch and the problem went away!

Good idea of using the unittests to track down the problem, thanks Andreas.

Hi Alan,

I had a similar requirement a few years ago and wrote it up here:
http://plone.org/documentation/how-to/integrate-external-content/

Reading the comments it seems as if someone has made it into a product.
There is also a product called Windowz which uses iframes:
http://plone.org/products/windowz

And yes, zope will work with frames (they're just html).

@import is css not html. You need xslt to do that sort of thing with xhtml.

Hope that helps,

Laurence

I do not think that your problem is Five related -- and I am
almost convinced that it is not related to your wrappers.

This is not a Five problem.

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what causes your problem.

It seems to be authentication related.

I would verify REQUEST._auth (you told us, you were using
HTTP basic authentication; then REQUEST._auth should contain
the authorization info from the request) in your debugging session.

One potentially important hint from Martijn is to check
where the failing validate is called. If the call comes
from traversal, then authentication did not yet happen (as
Martijn has pointed out).

I suspect that he is doing something at traversal time that requires a
logged-in user. The publisher, however, won't look for a user until
after traversal:

1) Traverse the URL
2) Look up user in the returned context
3) Call whatever traversal returned

If his __bobo_traverse__ returned a callable that does the dirty work,
the problem should be resolved. Compare this to Five views, for
example. They are objects with a __call__ method. They are constructed
at traversal time (__init__ is called), and then called (__call__ is
executed).

Following up to myself, as I had wrongly assumed that this problem was
related to file permissions in the tarball (only an issue on the 2.8
branch, apparanetly).

*I* introduced the bug here, by failiing to add a REQUEST parameter to
one method. I *did* test starting the server, but only using 'zopectl
fg', and not 'zopectl start', as well as running all the unit and
functional tests for each branch before checking in.

As a process fix: we should be adding functional tests which exercise
the 'start', 'restart', 'fg', etc. verbs of 'zopectl'.

Mea culpa. I owe the wine or equivalent comestibles to Andreas and Martijn.

Calling people morons makes you look like one, I'm afraid.

The bug had only indirectly to do with the recent security fix. The
startup problem only occurred when running Zope in managed mode,
something most developers never do because you normally want to see
the Zope log output when developing, so you catch problems early. So
the problem was limited to a special-cased method declaration that
only gets run in a deployment setting.

This was one of those rare cases of bad luck, as the developer in
question was not aware of the fact that this one special-cased method
was not covered by a unit or functional test.

almost convinced that it is not related to your wrappers.

They are constructed
at traversal time (__init__ is called), and then called (__call__ is
executed).

Don't do what? I was about to agree, as I don't think re-releasing
under the same version number was correct: the new releases should be
2.9.7.1, 2.10.3.1, or something similary (or bump to 2.9.8, 2.10.4).

Creating a new release takes me about 45 minutes for each release..time I
don't have this week before my vacation. So my decision should be acceptable

for the Zope world - perhaps not for the packagers...anyway things happen...

this bug is so obvious to catch that I have some serious doubts about
your software testing process. are you releasing totally untested code?
can we trust your releases in the future, will you change sth in your

I usually test the tar-balls but only using zopectl fg which did not show
any errors for the three releases.

Great, thank you! I tested the new tar balls and they work fine now.

Any chance of doing this for 2.8.9 as well, as this has the same bug?

The 2.8.9 release does not contain this error since Python decorators
aren't available in Python 2.3 (the official blessed Python version).

The problem *does* exist as decorators are just a nice way of spelling:

 methodName = decoratorName(methodName)

That's how the postonly decorator is applied in 2.8 and in the Hotfix,
and the REQUEST parameter is still required. I fixed this in the 2.8
branch as well last night.

You're right. I did not notice that the decorator emulation moved

Otherwise, I would not object against an *additional* SQLAlchemy based

That's *exactly* what I am talking about - an *additional* generic DA

I'm all for an SQLAlchemy DA (does SQLAlchemy support anything other than
PostgreSQL?) and this would help people move from Zope 2 to Zope 3 but it
*cannot* replace the other DA's because of the imperfect nature of SQL and
the even less perfect nature of RDBMs. :-/

Furthermore, there are many occasions where you want the kind of direct
access to a relation you get with the existing DA's.

[Zope-DB] ZMySQLDA thinks that MySQL has gone away

2007-03-26 Thread Pedro León López

Hello,

I got this error when querying MySQL 5.0.26. I use Zope 2.9.4 and ZMysqlDA
2.0.9b3 (with MySQLdb 1.2.1_p2). MySQL do not gone away.
This error only happens after exactly 8 hours of database inactivity. I
found some information about this error.
It seems is caused because MySQL close the connection after 8 hours, this
time is stored at 'wait_timeout' system variable in the MySQL server.
I'm doing an application for school where isn't there activity at night.
Then db.py don't know this because it feels that connection is alive. Maybe
the solution is check the connection before db.query.
Something similar in Zope3-Dev:

It will be possible fix this? If not, how can I do the transactions with
MySQL? Maybe with sqlobject o sqlalchemy?

Given that mysql (or any other database) may well be restarted as part of
log rotation and cron maintenance, you may well want to not depend on
continuously open connections.

Very easy to create a simple DTML routine which accesses MySQL; then set up
a cron job to run that DTML routine every few hours.

Well you know that Zope does not skip with any DA (except the one
for Gadyfly). So I am not in the position to replace anything in the Zope
core that does not exist :-) Especially I am not in the position to
replace any third-party products. So my whole posting has absolutely
nothing to with the Zope core. I am just trying to collect feedback - good

I hope this was clear enough - even for Dieter.
