Believe it or not, I got exactly what I want, except that Roadrunner
and AOL have me blacklisted for no good reason. Try to find a static
IP DSL with good uptime on a micro-budget in the swamps of north NJ
(even worse, I'm EXACTLY 3k feet from the CO)... 8-)>
I'm very happy - I actually PREFER doing it all myself. I've got 3
domains running, web and mail. I run leafnode against usenet.com for
my wife and I. If I feel like fooling around with some new program I
don't have to worry about pissing off my ISP. No moaning about how
much bandwidth I use (or don't). My spam blocking setup beats anything
I've seen generaly available (from an ISP) amavisd, SA with all kinds
of custom rules, 2 different virus checkers. I get maybe a spam a
day. Excellent uptime on a reasonable budget. If only I could get AOL
and RR to stop blacklisting me for no particular reason, I'd be happy.
I'm mostly happy anyway, but there are a few folks I'd like to be able
to email. <shrug>

If you're not confused, you're not trying hard enough.
