I wouldn't mind stepping into the management roll. I've managed before,
as a sole technical writer and a long time ago as a writer-manager, when
I was too inexperienced for the job. I also have management training and
experience in another field..

The problem with becoming a tech pubs manager is time.

-Time to learn and take education on managing, beyond what skills I
already have.
-Time to manage other writers.
-And, unfortunately, time to be a technical writer because all the
managers I see nowadays have to manage and are also responsible for
significant documentation, too.
-Time to still be a human being with pursuits, like family, outside the
office.

I fear too often the result is an untrained manager who is overburdened
and who defaults to being a part-time manager when the fires get big
enough but is a tech writer the rest of the time; I don't want that.
However, a company that recognized these four things and set about
working with me, that would be quite desirable.

Cheers.

I have been a technical writer for 11 years, and have a B.A. in
Technical & Professional Writing. I have absolutely no desire to be a
documentation manager. While I come close in my role as sole writer on a
project I am on, I do not desire to manage other writers. I'd rather be
doing the writing than managing those who are. I've seen too many
writers who took on the role of documentation manager end not getting to
do any of the first part of the title because they spend all of the time
doing the latter part!
