Hello All,

In my continuing search for the "right" trailer, I have located what I believe is a
'61 Overlander. Only problem I can see with it is the Jealousy windows (correct me if
this is wrong) next to the door are jambed open and one of the streetside rear window
Thank You in advance,

Jason

Jeff. We have the 6362 grease seals, part number 10055. Your Caravel takes
"horizontal shocks." Auto parts store don't have them.

Hi Jason. Most of that hardware is no longer available. Double strength glass
was used in the older trailers. Most glass shops have it.
The single axle trailers of that vintage that had a jalousie window forward
of the door, had a structural problem. Because of the weakness of the window,
fatigue cracking of the shell at the top of that window took place, along
with fatigue cracking the main bow. The cost to properly fix that problem
runs better than $2000.00. Andy

I need to get an original or if need be new spare tire holder for a
Wee-Wind.
Are they pretty standard across Airstreams of that vintage?

Thanks,

Gerald:

None of the 1949 or earlier (nor perhaps slightly later)
Airstream trailers had factory made spare tire carriers.
Apparently spare tires were kept in the trunk of the tow
vehicle. When storage compartments with exterior doors were
added in 1950/51 or thereabouts, the spare tire was often
stored in that compartment.

But your Wee Wind has no such compartment, so you will
have to fabricate something. Before you do, measure
carefully to make sure there is enough room for a spare tire
& carrier to fit (presumably) behind your propane bottles
without moving them too far forward so they hit the tow
vehicle on sharp turns. The pipe frame ahead of the body
was typically only 2 feet long, just enough room for only
one or two side-by-side propane bottles, so there may not be
sufficient space for mount a spare tire there even if you
wihsed to do that. Or carry the spare tire in your tow
vehicle trunk.

Gerald. As I am finding out, some do and some don't have vertical shocks. Ah,
so much for being consistently, inconsistent. Thanks for the update. Andy

The flat glass on a 61 Airstream is most likely regular run of the mill
glass, it is in my '60. If you are not mechanically challenged you can
replace it yourself.

Is the flat glass on an A/S special or can a regular glass shop replace it?
I haven't contacted the owner yet, so I'm trying to assess the situation
before I inquire about it.

Andy, this is the first time I have heard of this problem. Can you
elaborate? My 60 Overlander is a single axle trailer. It has been used
EXTENSIVELY by my family these last 42 years, so I know its history. To the
best of my knowledge there is no problem, but it would be good to know what
to look for.

Gerald,

I would highly discourage you from placing the spare on the rear of the
trailer. A trailer that small may become unbalanced by adding extra weight
at the very rear of the trailer.

Scott. The fatigue cracking happened mostly on the 22 foot coaches. However,
if yours has the problem, you will see cracks in the sheetmetal, at the tops
of each jalousie window. Andy
