Hello everybody,
I have just joined this list and wanted to say hello. I live in Odessa, Texas and I
am wondering if there are other VAC members in this area? I have been searching for
my fist Airstream for about a year now and thought I hadi found it this week.
One of my friends at work told me about an old Airstream that he bet I could pick up
for a song. He and I drove over to see it. There in tall grass was sitting a
neglected Airsteam. I was so excited because through the broken window I could see a
mostl
So my search continues.....and the 1962 Safari with broken windows and flat tires
continues to sit in grass....
Am I the only one who has experienced this???

Hi Tim,
No, you aren't the first or only one to encounter this phenomenon. =
Three years + ago, my son told me about a "little bitty" Airstream he =
spotted in a neighboring town. He had even talked to the owner, and told =
him that I was always looking for an oldie. Long story short, based on =
want ads supplied by his son, the owner decided the trailer was worth =
$6-8 K. This was a 1960 17' Pacer. It hadn't been on the road in at =
least a decade, but was mostly all there. When I asked for specifics on =
his pricing, he showed me the print-outs his son had sent him. =
Surprise!! they were all for highly polished, restored or "improved" =
Bambi's, mostly from the West Coast. The owner was very tenacious about =
his asking price, however, and we never struck a deal before he passed =
away last Summer.=20
There is a happy (for me) ending to this story. I contacted his son, =
who initially wanted the same price, UNTIL I sent him to R.J Dial's =
website with it's pricing guidelines. It is now mine and I have started =
to get it road worthy and a full resto is contemplated for the near =
future.
In a word, persistence!

I'm re-posting this, as I just remembered that posts with attachments don't
get on the daily Digest.

-----------
There seems to have been a lot of confusion this last week on shocks. I got
quite a few offline e-mails from people going "huh"?
I checked into the matter for clarification from a few reliable resources.
Through the '40's, '50's & '60's Airstream used conventional auto/truck
shocks on its vintage trailers, both leaf spring & Dura-Torque.
With the big body style change in 1969, Airstream changed to a horizontal
mounted (trailing arm) shock absorber configuration. I have also seen it on
some later '60's dual axles.
Here is picture of what it looks like. Digest viewers can see it at:
http://vintageairstream.com/ebay/shock.jpg
What makes the new shock special is:
"The shock used in the horizontal mount is a specialty shock built for
Airstream by Gabriel. The difference is a bladder is used to hold the oil on
the piston. The typical design of shocks would allow the oil to pool away
from the piston leading to premature failure." (thanks Charlie)
This shock is the one you need to get from Airstream dealers. While a
conventional shock can be made to fit, you can see it may eventually fail.
All this concurs with my experience, and I will add this info to the FAQ
section of the VAC website.
Later,
RJ

Don't despair Tim
I found my trailer (66 TradeWind) about 3 years before I eventually was =
able to buy it. The elderly owners said their son was going to take it. =
They were kind enough to let me show it to my wife anyway as an example =
of what I had in mind for our family camper.=20
Fortunately she "humoured" my infatuation and after another 1-1/2 years =
we found a 60 Overlander in Ohio. Fellow listee Scott Scheuermann was =
kind enough to perform an extremely thorough inspection for me, we =
bought it and last June made the 6000 mile round trip to retrieve it. =
The trailer pulled flawlessly and we vacationed our way home. I stopped =
at Jackson Ctr for a factory tour, visited Chicago, Wisconsin Dells, made =
a stop at the International Rally and took photos in South Dakota with =
Mt Rushmore in the background. Then at the KOA (near Rushmore) a violent =
hail storm ripped through the campground. Tents and awnings were =
shredded, windshields were smashed out of vehicles and our beloved =
Airstream's top and curbside looked like a golf ball. We tried not to =
let the incident ruin a great trip but we were dejected. I decided that =
I couldn't invest the effort and expense required to restore the trailer =
and still have hundreds of dents. I decided to keep and use the trailer =
until a suitable replacement could be found. We enjoyed the trailer last =
summer and had many great camping weekends in the Rockies with it. Still =
think of the great shape it was in for the 41 years prior to my =
ownership and the devastating results after a week in my hands.
Last September my wife wandered by the location of the original =
Airstream we looked at and inquired if the son was still taking it. =
Turns out he was transferred to Spain and would not be needing it after =
all. Soon after a deal was struck and we became proud owners of a 66 =
TradeWind. A friend bought my Overlander (for considerably less than I =
paid) and all was right with the world.
An ironic footnote occurred about a week after I sold the dented =
Overlander. I was called by a movie production company looking for an =
"old" Airstream. They only needed it for exterior shots for about 4 days =
and would pay about $700. They had a look at mine but found it too clean =
looking. I put them in touch with the new owner of my former trailer and =
it was just right. It is an office for a crop duster in the soon to be =
released (straight to video) Hitcher 2 starring C. Thomas Howell and =
Jake Busey.
I know this is a long saga Tim but it shows if you keep looking and are =
ready to pounce when the right one comes along you will find your =
Airstream. If I had it all to do over again I would not change a thing =
(other than staying 1 day too long at the KOA) I have only been an =
Airstream owner for a year and I already have lots of great stories for =
the fireside chats.

How very odd. The 3-digit numbers I understand - most are reserved for
International officers...but 5-digit ones? Lots of them out
there. Anybody know what's going on?

Come on, Jim, you know perfectly well that the BB is the
mouthpiece for International WBCCI; IMHO, it does a good job at that, and
additionally has the Pfred Sez column, advertisements, information about
rallies and caravans, and a classified section, along with all the chatty
WBCCI stuff and the ego strokes for the International officers. It's not
VAC stuff, but why should it be? That's what VAC and the VAC Advantage are
for.

Seemed reasonable until I realized that they are up to 32,XXX in
numbers. Maybe they don't want to skip around in the
"actively-being-assigned" range.
