Bill, Depends. Some of the extreme Protestant traditions such as Calvinism, the Pilgrims etc. are or at least were horribly repressive.
My ancestors came out of such a strict rigid tradition and it impacted my family down to my father's generation by adversely programming their morality, and placing a great weight on their ability to enjoy life. In this tradition one MUST SUFFER to be a good Christian. Having fun in life means you are a "bad person". Even after the Christian faith was gone, this morality still infected my father and his family. I count myself lucky to have escaped it!
