2006-03-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Dennis,

Mainly writing this to see if I can get through to Millennia this way. All
my emails either to Legacy services or LUG have been bouncing for over a
month! And yes they were all in plain text. I wonder if this is a problem
from the UK as the other regulars have been missing as well.

As Johnathan said I contacted him directly and said pretty much the same as
yourself one can, however, keep the footers be glabally changing the dates
in the old folder to the new date and then doing the comparison.

[LegacyUG] Bouncing Emails

2006-03-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi All

Since I managed to get a message through to LUG I have had several emails
from UK users who have had the same problem. To answer their question as to
how I got an email through - I have had for a long time a hardly used
MSN.com account and I used that.

It definitely seems that .co.uk emails are bouncing. For information Brian
Kelly has contacted me and I have sent him the bouncing message and
hopefully we can now get somewhere.

Hi All,

I am continuing to receive emails from people unable to ssend emails to
Millennia. Perhaps, Sherry, you could publish on LUG the reasons which you
sent to me? I feel sure that people will feel happier knowing that the
problem is being addressed.

The latest is below:

Hi Ron

I am hoping you would be willing to get a message to Legacy that I have the
same problem of being unable to get a message accepted on the LUG list, or
to anyone at Support. Below is from the latest bounced email, and also one
from earlier.

It is driving me mad – I receive the list emails but can’t reply.

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I would like to place a counter on my Legacy created webpage.

I sifted through the Archives and found a message from 2001, stating this
isn't possible.

The chap did mention editing the webpages through Microsofts Frontpage.

Has anyone tried this?

It is also possible to add other pages or should I just build a webpage
and have the Legacy pages

hyper-linked in?

I did through a webpage together using Publisher, but then I had 2 x
index.html and of course it didn't work. :)

Kind regards,
Sherrie.

Ron,

Actually, we're not sure what's going on. Ken is working with the list
server host to try to figure out the problem.

There are a couple of ways that you can contact us:

Problem Report Form on our website at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Problems.asp - unfortunately, with this, we
can't keep a running account of previous correspondence if you reply using
this form to my reply to you.

Web-based email - set up an account with Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. We
haven't had any reports with those email addresses not getting through.

For some strange reason, we're having difficulty getting through to South
Africa. If you know of anyone from that country who is saying that we're
not responding, again, have them set up a web-based email account and our
replies should get through with no problem.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Dear Ron,

I am very grateful for your prompt helpful reply - This is a web based
e-mail account albeit in England. Yahoo do not give .com addys for people
in England.

I have listed below 2 main problems on printing and, would be grateful
if you have some knowlege of this or, as you most kindly offered, would you
please be kind enough to post.

  Sincerely

:::;;

First 1 tried to post since 23 Feb:

Firstly, I must say how grateful I am for the user's group informative
e-mails - lots of tips to take on board and, a BIG thank you to all of you
out there for taking the time to answer the questions!

This is my problem and, hope someone can give this idiot an answer:
  (a) When trying to print Pedigree Chart (39 people - 6 generations)
the names printed are on top of other information i.e. death place so it
becomes unreadable. I have tried different print set up otions but it
remains the same. I use A4 paper.

  (b) is there a way to print out a chart of all relatives?

;

  (2)
  LINEAGE CHART

(1) No matter what I do, I cannot get it to print in the
4 colours options - the 2 colour one works (all males/all
females) - what am I doing wrong?

(2) This chart will only show the siblings on the male
line - how can I make it show the siblings of the female
lines also - I'm not sexist but, would like to show the
extent of the family/s as, they are all blood lines.

PEDIGREE CHART

(1) If a name is, for example, Elizabeth Mary Ann Smith -
I get a print which shows some of this or, it continues
over the box line - I get both types on one print out
(which looks really weird) - Oftentimes, the RIN is also
missing on some of the box's. I have tried all sorts of
page set ups fonts ect but, all to now avail?

(2) Same problem as (1) in Linage Chart.

ANCESTOR CHART

(1) Same problem as (2) above

TIMELINE CHART

(1) On any given print out, some of the names are shown
inside a box and some on the outside at the right hand
side?? - Again, look very weird with no consistancy.

GENERAL

(1) How can I show half children or half siblings (because,
after all they are in the blood line) on these charts?

(2) On different charts reports, why are the buttons
greyed out? - I wanted to make a paper file insert (1 page
A4) for the front of each person folder, showing things to
do/ check/finished etc and on this page, I wanted a large
RIN No. + Name + an ancestor chart (this would make instant
recognition of the individual but, I can't ?Can I ?

I would be very grateful for any help you could afford me
and, thank you, in advance

  Many thanks

  Hi Ellie,

No problem in contacting me direct. You are doing nothing wrong at all. The
problem seems to be with Millennia's servers. You may have seen Sherry's
note to this effect in LUG today. However from your email it would seem
that
Yahoo.co.uk emails are not getting through. I managed it by using an
MSN.com

account which I hardly used. This is Sherry's email to me which she sent
when I managed to get through:

We've been having a lot of problems with certain email addresses from other
countries bouncing. Some users have taken to using the Problem Report Form
on our website for contacting us. Those messages have no problem getting
through. nor should there be a problem with a web-based email account such
as Yahoo!, Gmail or hotmail.

Ken's in contact with the ISP trying to solve the problem, hopefully soon
as

it's not only causing problems with our users contacting us but our
translation lists are at a standstill!
-

Since your Yahoo.co.uk email account is not getting through maybe if you
opened a web based .com account you would have more luck. If you have an
urgent problem do send it to me and if I can't answer myself I will put on
LUG for you.

BTW It is not only LUG that is affected it is *all

Subject: [LegacyUG] Linking census web pages to Legacy sources: how to
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2006 01:15:02 -0500

I would like to add a link on my sources linking back to the original web
page were I obtained the source.

For example, I could put a link on a census as a source linking back to the
ancestry.com page where I obtained the census page. This same method should
work for any link to web content.

I tried out one method: I copy the web address for the census page from my
web browser and paste it into the Comments section
of the source. Then to when I am later viewing the source in Legacy and
want

to see the original census, I copy and paste the address back into the
internet browser and I go right to the original census page.

My question is there a more elegant solution than all the copying and
pasting? For example, is there a way to embed or otherwise set up a section
of the source with something like click here to see original census
instead of having three lines of a gibberish web page address in the
sources?

And is there a way to tell Legacy that I want to engage the browser when I
click on the pasted links so that I do not have to manually engage the
browser?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Linking census web pages to Legacy sources: how to

2006-03-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Julian and Don,

I am aware of the use of the html convention which you describe and it works
fine when transferring an address to a web page. Incidentally « and » are
produced by using the alt key together with number pad 0171 and 0187.

I tried using this technique in the comments section of a source but (as I
expected) it did not give a link to my web site.

I use the following in Legacy (in Notes, Events, Sources):

Source site: «a HREF=http://www.isphording.info»Link to my site«/a»

Other person in this site: «a HREF=12666.html target=main»(Link to
this person)«/a»

The stuff just before a and at other places is critical, don't know
where it is on my keyboard, so I copy/paste it. like and
Play around with these links, generate a html report and you can view
the results and click on the links to see if it works. I find linking
via a click able text to another person in the same genealogy is handy
and illustrating.

The html guru's here may be able to give more detail.

Example of links to census images can be found here:

You are quite right Steve. All that is needed is to take the code for which
ever counter is selected and paste it where one wants the counter to appear.

The other part of the OP's query re linking pages can get a bit more

Hi Johnathan,

Would I be right in thinking that if you put it in the html footer the on

actually be counting the number of pages visited rather than the number of

If so surely it would be better just to put it on the Index Page (ie

You paste it in under custom html footer under links in web page

Hi everyone,

Sorry I've taken so long to reply. Snowed under with work family.

Steve Jonathan - thanks :)

Ron - that is my next question... how do I insert the html code manually
when

Legacy builds the pages?

In the 'links' page it has the option to have the link on every page or
not, if you wish.

I did try adding a counter html into the footer in the links section, but
it doesn't appeared

to have worked.

I also tried to modify a the index.html previously, but it lost all it's
Legacy graphics.

Kind regards,

Hi Paul,

I was not suggesting that discussing Legacy web pages is off topic - I do it
regularly (especially their bugs). What I was suggesting was that details of
html is off topic. BTW there is no problem in using Notepad to amend html.
It is the standard use for Notepad and I use it regularly. Personnally I
much prefer to write my own html rather than use software such as FrontPage
as it gives me much more control over the pages but I guess that's a matter
of taste.

If you are discussing the Legacy webpages is it off topic? I think one
suggestion would be for Millennia to add a counter to the index pages of
their web pages. It is something that I think most people would love to
use

and the coding is not too complex.

Any program that will handle a plain text file can be used to edit or
create a page of html. None will cause any problems -- any that occur are
the result of the editor's ability, not the program's. I build and edit all
my web pages using UltraEdit; I can also recommend the HTML editor by
CoffeeCup Software. Whatever your choice, don't ever use WYSIWYG; there are
many on-line guides for learning basic coding and you'll be far better
served spend a little time in study then falling victim to the seduction of
quick and easy automation.

As for Frontpage, the less said the better.

RE: [LegacyUG] 1/2 Children Adoption by 2nd Parent

Hi Paul,

I use the same technique as Mike. You will find that the child shows up
twice on the Family View both as a 1/2 child and a full child. I also use
this method when the biological father is not known and the child takes the
surname of the mother's husband by a later marriage.

Paul,

The way I handle this is to add the children from the first marriage to the
second marriage with link to an existing son/daughter and add the adopted
children to the second marriage. Then under children's settings of the
second marriage set the relationship to the father as adopted and the
relationship to mother as biological.

Hello,

I have a family where the wife married and had 3 children by the
first husband. (Louis Croteau)

He died and she remarried again. (Eugene Croteau - 5th cousins)

The second husband (Eugene) ADOPTED the 3 children and this couple
went on had more children together.

Although I can see (show 1/2 kids) all the children on the second
marriage, when I go to CHILDRENS SETTINGS, I can' view the 1/2
children to place the child's status as ADOPTED.

How can I show these three children are adopted by the second husband?

Thanks,
Paul Croteau

RE: [LegacyUG] re: Adding Census Information

2006-03-19 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Garry,

This seems to be a matter of personal choice. Some people ceate census
events for each census year and include all the details from the census page
under the event. My own choice is to include the census for each individual
on the page under Residence, Occupation, Age, Place of birth, Address etc
events and attach a copy of the census to each entry under Pictures. Using
the Source Clipboard this does not take long today and I find it easier to
follow the history of each person by doing it this way.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citations

2006-03-19 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Roxanne,

I am uncertain as to whether I fully understand the ramifications of what
you are asking. However, publication other people's text is pretty close to
copyright infringement although, obviously, to publish the location of the
source is not.

On the detail section of the sources there is a check box if you wish to
publish the details. If you don't wish to then do not check it. Also if you
include the full details in the Master Source there are tick boxes for pages
which you may not wish to include in reports..

I hope I can manage to get my point across. I have a

my information. But I don't necessarily want the
entire text of the source quoted on the individual's
entry. How do I get Legacy to name the source without
including the whole source? Mainly, I want to be able
to point others in the right direction as to where I
got my information so they can check it themselves if
they desire. I don't want to just hand out copies of
other people's text.

... is that the Preferred Child was indicated in some way on the list of
children in Family View.

Sometimes I find myself looking at a Family View where the Husband and Wife
are the parents several children, one of whom married one of my relatives,
but I can't for the life of me remember which one it was.

Although I don't follow the lines of non-blood-related people extensively,
I do often include the spouses of the siblings of an in-law, so just
looking to see which one is indicated as having married is no help. It
would be very useful to be able set my in-law as the Preferred Child and
then see this indicated in Family View as well as in Child View.

Or perhaps you can do this and I have just missed a trick somewhere?

Hi Sal,

Without a reasonable knowledge of html I doubt if what you are asking is
possible.

No doubt you you have looked at the options for different styles of web
pages available on the Create Web Pages and I would suggest that you create
each of these to see what they look like and whether any/all/which meet your
requirements.

These different formats can be linked in various ways but I really cannot
see how this can be done without some rather serious html coding. Html is
not very difficult to learn and starting points are given in my Web site
under the Links tab.

Good Luck,

about 2,500 files and it really doesn't take very long to do them. Updating
is a bit of a different matter and there are various ways of doing this but
all involve completely redoing all the html files.

BTW don't feel tempted to put the sources all together - keep them with the
individual.

Good luck

Ron

Hi all,

Inspired by Mary Young's new website mentioned earlier today, I have
uploaded three generations from my grandmother as a test. I already see how
much work I have to do just on these pages. It took two minutes to upload
29

names; I have over 6200 in my Legacy file! I haven't tried updating a page.

It's here if you want to look and comment:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wrhurst/tree/hswb11/index.htm

Look quick; I may take it down at any time.

Re: [LegacyUG] test website

2006-04-08 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Mary,

Not sure whether it was me or you who misunderstood!

wrt sources, using the pedigree web pages when I first started to set up my
site I put all the sources in a separate page. However when I came to do the
updates I noticed that the reference numbers changed depending on the number
of changes made. Thus to update it was necessary to replace *all* the pages
on the server. Because of the bugs in the Legacy coding which seriously
affects my layout ( can we have a fix for this please?) this would have been
a monumental task as I would have had to change the coding in *every* page -
a definite no no. However this problem is overcome by putting the sources on
each individual's page.

RE: [LegacyUG] Show both Adoptive and Biological Parents on Ancestor Report

2006-04-08 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Trent,

I am not sure how this would appear in printed reports but it works OK in
web pages. There is nothing to stop a person having multiple parents so you
can show the child as the son of the biological parents and also the adopted
son of his subsequent parents. The child has the same RIN in both instances
and will show up attached to both sets of parents - in fact for web pages it
creates two web pages instead of just one and links them as appropriate.

Have you tried this?

Thanks for you help, Elizabeth. Why is it that the solution always calls
for buying more software...g... (i.e., I now need to file my taxes in two
states (I married an out of state gal and she still lives in that state)
and

just discovered I need to purchase an additional state from the software
company).

I'm trying to show a fascinating story I just discovered in my family. My
aunt's husband's (uncle in-law) brother adopted a son. Many years later,
due to needing to get a passport and losing some of his original adoption
decrees, he went searching for his biological parents to get his actual
birth record. In his search, he discovered that he is actually the
biological son of my paternal grandmother's brother.

I'm trying to figure out an interesting way of showing this link on a
report

or chart. May have to try Treedraw.

Trent,
You can try the shareware version of TreeDraw or buy $40 download-only
Legacy TreeDraw to see if it meets your requirements. Extensive editing may
be required to get the desired results. Small charts of non-bio parents
could be saved as images and added to traditional charts.

A couple of $30 genealogy programs have automatic all-names box charts but
they are not as easy to read as traditional ancestor charts starting with
ONE person and the selected parents for each child. It is misleading to
show non-bio parents as if they are bio parents in genealogy charts and
reports. One program allows multiples of custom details to be printed on
wall charts so a Memo can explain Mary's son who has a different
surname

in a descendant wall chart for his stepfather's family.

Select the reports and charts you want for OUTPUT and then plan data entry
to suit. Editing of the wording may be required for non-bio relationships
in

an ancestor report. Living people are usually recorded in blended families
and individuals orphaned before 1900 are usually with their bio parents in
my files. I've found several of the six children from an 1848 guardianship
document in the 1851 census but a couple of them may have lived in a
household with a different surname.

I don't like reading ancestor reports with long notes. Grandmother's life
goes from 1890-1980 then the next note is about a great-grandparent who
lived 1850-1900 in a completely different part of the world.

Several direct ancestors in my files were raised in blended households. A
minister was a very kind father to a widow with six children so one branch
of notes starts with his wife to include all her children. One of their own
son became a doctor and politician mentioned frequently in Canadian history
books. -- Elizabeth

RE: [LegacyUG] Children before marriage

Hi Rob,

What I do in this situation is to invent a partner unknown and under
Marriage Information check the box This couple never married.

One thing to watch though is the order of the two marriages. To set them
correctly I invent a date for the unknown marriage, earlier than the true
marriage, and then sort the marriages. Having done that I delete the date of
the unknown marriage. I also delete the spouse name (unknown) to leave a

Hi,

I am ahving a liitle problem to get output the way I want it to be. It
concerns a wife that has (and lost...) some children before marriage.
Yes, I am ashamed to admit :-)) What I have done so far is to enter
the children with the knonw mother and a unknown father.

Output generated now gives something (I am not sure about the English
as I am using a translated version, but you will understand).

===
Sue born etc.

Sue married.

Children from this relation.
===

I was able to change the line 'Sue married'. In something like 'Sue
had children'. But direct after that line I do not know how to remove
the line that refers to relation (or marriage).

What I really want is:

==
Sue, born.

Sue had children (before marriage).

1. Pete
2. Marc.

Sue married George..etc.

From this marriage:
1. Bill
===

I am using Legacy 5 DeLuxe.

Can anyone help,

You don't need to invent a date. Just click the spouse icon and use the

Ronald,

thanks for your tips, but I already practice this. If you check 'never
married' the output will still be 'Sue has relation with.'as far
as I know.which in a certain biological way must have been true I
guess :-)) But I will try your tip again. I simply want no
reference/sentence for this relation/one-night-stand(?) in the output
and only a heading 'Children:'

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for that - I have now got it to work as you say, although I'm not
absolutely certain I did it exactly the same way. On the Marriage
Information Screen for the unknown father I deleted all references to
marriage and spouses etc and all came out OK.

One point though. In the report it says Martha had a child. In fact Martha
had three before she got married! The report continues Her children were.
I guess if I looked hard enough I would find a way round this though.

Will have to see how this comes out on web pages now!

RE: [LegacyUG] Exporting media with gedcom? (for TNG)

2006-04-12 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Ed,

I cannot see how one can possibly do this. You mention relative paths but
relative to what? Surely the path on the recipients computer will be
dependent entirely on where the picture folder is stored on their computer.

It only works with web pages because the file structure on a server is
exactly the same as that on the source computer and a browser knows where to
start looking for the files.

RE: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources and Getting Them to Print Properly

2006-04-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Tam,

Don't know what the book says - I haven't read it! However the output which
you are getting is correct for the way you have entered your sources, in
fact, coincidentally, it is the method I use (I hadn't read the tips
either). BTW Legacy version 6 gives the same output.

To my mind what we are recording here is the source of the information,
which is a newspaper, and *not* the event, the obit, so the first field
should be the name of the source. If the book says otherwise then I don't
agree with it.

Just my opinion

Subject: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources and Getting Them to Print Properly
Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2006 12:39:11 -0500

Hi --

First let me say that this group is great. I've been doing things the
hard way and I've decided that now is the time, while I still have less
than 3,000 peeps in my database, to start from scratch with a new database
utilizing all the tricks I've learned here. I just figure it will be
faster and easier than trying to find what should be changed, and who
knows -- I might find something I missed in the past.

Rather than learning how to do it right the first time, I originally used
a lot of hokey pokey to get my source citations to print according to
the guidelines in Elizabeth Shown Mills book Evidence!, including
creating a master source for every item which, as you can imagine, has
become so unwieldy as to be practically useless.

So, I've been reading through the Tips on source citation and my
question relates specifically to citing obits
(http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/SourceObituary.asp), but it really could
relate to any source citation in Legacy.

I followed the steps given, and it does seem easier, more practical, and a
better utilization of the resources provided by the program. But the
output does not conform to the Evidence! recommendations (which is why I
invented my own flawed process to begin with).

The book states the citation should read (italics omitted, of course):

Jane Smith obituary, The Small Town Times, Podunk, Anystate, 1 January
2000, page 1, column 1.

The output I get following the Tips instructions is:

The Small Town Times (Podunk, Anystate), Jane Smith obituary, 1 January
2000, page 1 column 1.

There are similar problems with the other Tips given for source
citations.

So I'm wondering if (1) the output set forth in Evidence! is only
suggested, and as long as all the info is there, the actual format is
irrelevant? and (2) am I missing something in trying to get this to print
according to the book? I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

I know, I talk too much. But I'd really like to get this right *this*
time, while my squeaky clean database has only two beautifully documented
people in it. :-)

TIA -- you guys rock --

RE: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources and Getting Them to Print Properly

2006-04-15 Thread ronald ferguson
Maybe, but that does not make everything that Mills says accurate. At best
it is a compromise. Personally I think that a source is type of publication
in which the obituary is published. There is often no such thing as one
obituary, there can be any number depending on how well the person was known
- and all different.

Similarly I would not accept a notice of birth as a source but the type of
publication in which the announcement was made.

If my view is non standard then so be it. I am not going to change.

It's the recommended standard for articles for the National Genealogy
Society Quarterly; see their Guidelines for Writers at
http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/pubsqguide.cfm.

Also, it is highly recommended by the Board For Certification of
Genealogists - see
http://www.bcgcertification.org/skillbuilders/skbld959.html.

It isn't the ONLY format out there - but it is the best of the lot, and
most

folks seem to prefer it. Ms. Mills would be the first to say that getting
your source documented is more important than the specifics of how you do
it...but the approach she has taken has been widely adopted.

[LegacyUG] AKAs and Privacy

2006-04-17 Thread ronald ferguson
I use AKAs to record women's married names. I have a case where the wife has
died and her husband is still alive and the compiler of the tree from where
the information was extracted has requested privacy for all living persons.

I have noticed, however, that the AKA for the late wife is published with
her married name. I understand why this has happened but would it not be
possible for a privacy box to be included in AKAs?

I would prefer the coding for the pedigree web pages to be sorted out first
as I can always cut the AKA out - but would prefer not to.

[LegacyUG] Internet Explorer Version 7

2006-04-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Some time ago it was reported that there were unresolved problems in

As I would like to upgrade from IE 6 I would be grateful if someone could

Hi.
Noticed a question or two about IE 7 and Legacy on the user group.

I am currently using the Beta Version of IE7 with Legacy and have been for
the past couple of months with no problems. I did have a few problems to
begin with, mainly with the Legacy Home Page not coming up properly in
Legacy itself, due to the fact that the Legacy Home Page depends on some
aspects of IE for it to function properly, but this seemed to have been
fixed and the two happily coexist with each other.

For those of you who use IE as your browser and haven't tried IE7, it is
well worth a try.

I do not use Miss as it can be misleading, says very specifically that the
individual had no previous marriages. I would suggest the term Ms. for
females and Mr. for the male - do not spell out as the title Mister can
also be construed as a given name. Of course Mrs.. can be used if marriage
situation can be determined and Miss. if has been proven there were no
previous marriages.

Hi Jenny,

For me, this is a matter of personal choice. To be honest I do not see the
point in aiming to standardise everything. Some things need to be eg the way
data is stored if one is likely to use Gedcoms or transfer to other
databases but I enjoy the variety of ways in which different people arrange
and present their data. Sometimes I see a method I like and adopted it and
at other times I might not think it worth the effort. But let us enjoy
variety and avoid one size fits all reports and websites.

RE: [LegacyUG] Obituary Image

Hi Mary,

I attach them for ease of access when I am research an individual. By
attaching them to sources etc. I can just click on them to see the original
and hence no need to search my files either computerised or otherwise.

I have no interest in publishing them (indeed it would probably be a breach

Can someone tell me, what is the purpose of attaching images to an

For instance, I have an obituary image attached to Obituary Event. But
the picture doesn't appear on Reports, one wouldn't even know the

How can I make it easy to view the image, rather than transcribing the

Re: [LegacyUG] Researchers' Addresses

2006-04-23 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Diane,

In a nutshell, I don't organise them. I have spearte folders for pictures
and folders for documents; when I think I have enough in a folder I just
create another one (usually about once a year). As exh of the pictures, or
documents, is linked to a source or event etc. in Legacy when I want to look
at it I just click the picture and look at at it. In the very rare event
that I actually want to view the document outside Legacy I just get the file
name from the picture page and go to the folder to view it.

Works fine for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] AKAs and brackets with error 5 reports

2006-04-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Tracy,

I can't help with your error problem as the entry with brackets around in
AKAs in my files works OK. However may I ask what an incorrect name is? I
have several variants of names which I have found in censuses, IGI records,
BMD's etc, more often than not from the 19c when many people were illiterate
and over the years one can see how the spelling has changed. As far as I can
see they are equally as valid as the entries in the records were made by eg
clerks who spelt them the way they thought was correct and their guess is at
least as good as mine. Following this logic through I include all variations
in AKAs.

I faced this same situation, but I found that even though the child
appears twice, the Family Group Sheets should print correctly. I'm

I am gathering a lot of information from other family members via email. I
am curious how others are saving and citing emails as source? (Interesting
that email was not on the default Master Source Type List.)

What do you put as the Master List Name, Author and Title? Do you have any
unique way of cataloging these emails?

I just purchased Acrobat and am saving all source emails as .pdf files. I
think this will preserve the original view of the email as much as
possible.

I am also contemplating whether it is also worth copying the body of the
email text into the Text of Source window. I am leaning towards yes, as
no one knows whether acrobat will be available 300 years from now. (Yes, or
whether Legacy will be either... I know... hard copy print and multiple
digital formats (.txt, .pdf and Legacy...g))

Thanks for any comments.

Hi Srephen,

It is not clear from your message whther you are referring to the genral
Google index or your site index by Google. If the former their indexing is
being done but perhaps more slowly than in the past. Some 3 months ago I
included a Google site search on my web pages and it still han't been
indexed 6 weeks after putting it on my site and only had the pages which it
had already indexed for its general pages available. I switched to FreeFind
where one asks them to do a site search which they do there and then.

Hi Jon,

Just to avoid confusion and, perhaps help someone else, as one is allowed 6
weeks to register a birth a May birth could have been registered in July
thus putting it in the 3rd Q (ie Sept). In particular this needs watching
for November/December births which can be registered in the 1st (Mar) Q of
the following year.

Jim,
The Q date format was introduced to record a situation found in the United
Kingdom. Registrations are reported to the General Register Office on a
calendar quarterly basis and recorded in indices. Thus, a birth
registered in May

of 1900 would be recorded in Legacy as June Q 1900. (The month used in
the date is the third month of each quarter.) The pitfall for researchers
is
that an event recorded in, for example, the second quarter might actually
have

occured in the first quarter!

[LegacyUG] Web Pictures

2006-05-03 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi All,

In my Legacy picture folder I store photographs in both jpg and gif format,
the latter being used for oval pictures which have been given a transparent
background as jpg does not support transparancy. When Legacy creates
Pedigree web pages it converts the format of the gif files to jpg. This I
don't want.

It is very esy to replace the pictures with the gif originals but can
someone please explain to me how Legacy manages to do this and also, more
importantly why it should want to.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error message

2006-05-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Pat,

I am not clear as to whether you have actually looked for your Family File
or just that the screen comes up blank. Assuming the latter, I cannot
imagine that your Family Files have been deleted so they must be on your
computer somewhere but Legacy may be looking in the wrong place. If you have
used the defaults then they would be stored in C:\Legacy\Data so I would go
to My Computer and look there. If they are then double click on the one you
want and Legacy should open it. It will then remember where they are.

If you did not use the defaults then go to the folder where you stored them
and repeat. If they are not there then I suggest using Windows Explorer to
search for the file and once found again double click on it.

If they cannot be found then I would try searching for the backups using
Windows and again double click to open in Legacy or go to
LegacyFileRestore Family File.

Thanks, Ron--

Well, I think you're right about the DeLuxe already being active--this time
when I opened the file (and I did restart my computer), it did say DeLuxe
edition in the lower right corner--I hadn't noticed that before.

Well, as far as opening the Family File, I did that originally and again
this time. And it displays the name of the family file at the top of the
window -- there just aren't any names in it!

Also the directions said that in the process of reinstalling or whatever
Legacy, I would be asked to enter a password, namely family, but that
never happened.

However when I followed the directions at that website, I now

1) seem to have Legacy but not Legacy Deluxe.
2) The directions say to go to HelpUnlock Legacy Deluxe. But when I go

Unlock . . . Deluxe option listed.
3) Also when I open my family file, it is blank. there are NO people in

So NOW what do I do?

The Family File is open--and the name of the file is at the top of the
Window.

When I went to C;\Legacy\Data, the file was there but it was only ca1300 KB
-- smaller than the sample file!

As I've said, I can find the file -- there just isn't anybody in it!

Hi Pat,

I am not clear as to whether you have actually looked for your Family File
or just that the screen comes up blank. Assuming the latter, I cannot
imagine that your Family Files have been deleted so they must be on your
computer somewhere but Legacy may be looking in the wrong place. If you
have used the defaults then they would be stored in C:\Legacy\Data so I
would go to My Computer and look there. If they are then double click on
the one you want and Legacy should open it. It will then remember where
they are.

If you did not use the defaults then go to the folder where you stored
them and repeat. If they are not there then I suggest using Windows
Explorer to search for the file and once found again double click on it.

If they cannot be found then I would try searching for the backups using
Windows and again double click to open in Legacy or go to
LegacyFileRestore Family File.

Thanks, Ron--

Well, I think you're right about the DeLuxe already being active--this
time when I opened the file (and I did restart my computer), it did say
DeLuxe edition in the lower right corner--I hadn't noticed that before.

Re: [LegacyUG] Constructing Family Trees

2006-05-20 Thread ronald ferguson

I agree with your thinking, Dennis. Whilst it seems to me that it is
essential for Legacy to include standard report and chart types it is surely
not possible for all the variations on a particular to be included in one
program and these should be stand alone and I include DNA in this.

What is important, however, is that the basic reports work properly and are
bug free. This is not the case at present as we see from this forum. My own
biggest problem is with web page creation. The two main bugs in the html
have been pointed out several times but nothing has been done to correct
them. I note also that you have pointed out some bugs in reports over the
years and I think some of these still need to be corrected.

Surely priority should be given to getting the basics to work properly first
before trying to expand the scope of the program.

I believe add-on programs are the way to go for features like certain
reports that not everyone needs. Book reports for example. Or an add-on
that produces web-pages. These kinds of tasks kind of stand on their own
... i.e. they don't update the db or interact with Legacy's primary

not.

Re: [LegacyUG] Q dates

2006-05-21 Thread ronald ferguson
Afraid you have it wrong Pat. The British records office uses 4 quarters
Jan-Mar; Apr-Jun; Jul-Sep; and Oct-Dec. The last month of each quarter is
used to identify the quarter thus the Q dates are Mar; Jun; Sep and Dec each
followed by the year. It should also be noted that these are the dates the
event was registered and *not* the date of the event and given that 6 weeks
is allowed to register the event it is quite possible that an event can be
registered in the quarter after the event happened.

Usually one can be reasonably certain that marriages and deaths actually did
take place within the same quarter as the registration but this is not the
case with births.

All quite staightforward really!!! (In a British sort of way)

Hi all,
With the new release, I am thinking about taking the plunge and
upgrading from Version 5 Deluxe. I wonder how many of you who hated
the cartoony look have gotten used to the icons and the way the
software handles?

I plan to produce a family report at the end of the summer, and am
looking forward to enhanced book reporting.

I know I could download Standard Version of Legacy 6, but I really
hate to have to manually pick a new location. I prefer streamlined
downloading and overriding of older versions. Am I being too cautious?
Should I bite the bullet and try manually installing version 6
elsewhere on my laptop? (There are instructions in the archives, I
know.)

I don't wish to start a pros and cons thread - I just wanted to know
if Version 6 grows on you or not!

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center Bug in Build 99

Hi Dennis,

I can more or less confirm your report. I was unable to test the Descendants
Narrative REport as I could not get to 112 pages so I tried the Lines of
Multiple Descent. Without including the Location Index I had no problems,
however when the Location Index was included it stopped and then raced at
page 122. I did not get the run time error but the program initially hung,
the page went blank apart from a task bar in the middle of the screen and
clicking this caused a crash. It did not effect the desktop.

As you say, the inclusion of the Location Index does seem to overpower the
program. Maybe this only happens for reports over a certain size?

Hi Dennis,

I ran it from the report icon (not the publishing center) and am using the

seems to confirm that there may be a point above which the number (or memory

Ron Dennis,
What version of Windows are you using with Legacy 6 Deluxe? There may be
variations in Legacy reports with earlier versions of Windows. Limited
computer equipment was the reason some customers stayed with Legacy 5 along
with the smaller program download size for dialup Internet service.

System requirements from Legacy 6 Help file 128 megabytes of RAM memory.
(256 mb or more recommended) There is a big difference between minimum
requirements for using basic name collecting features of genealogy software
and practical requirements for typical family books over 100 pages with
pictures.

Researchers who cite a source for every variation of date/location in
Legacy

6 may run into the limitations of a single Word file when all endnotes are
included for all generations of descendants. Online discussions often
mention book reports over 10,000 names and sometimes the source text is
longer than the body of a descendant report with notes.

[LegacyUG] Pedigree Web Pages

2006-05-26 Thread ronald ferguson

In my web site I have people with two sets of parents, adoptive and natural.
Prior to the issue of version 6.0.0.99 in the Family Links box both sets of
parents numbered 1 and 2 were displayed with their names. No longer are they
being displayed, only the numbers, although in the parent boxes above the
child's name they are. This applies to both pages produced for the child. Is
it possible for this to be corrected please.

I note also that in the html , correctly, the # sign has now been placed in
front of the body colour. May I ask that when changes such as this are made
a note is included in the Update Details so that those of us who compare
folders to identify file changes will know to expect every file to have been
modified and then we may decide how to handle it.

BTW is it possible that the incorrect nesting of tables can be sorted
please?

RE: [LegacyUG] Web page problem

2006-05-27 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Charles,

Can you please be a bit more specific so that it is possible to reproduce
your result - which type of web page are you using? Which sub folder are you
referring to - in the pedigree pages for eg the line is included in the main
folder and not in a sub folder. Is it a Legacy designed line that is missing
or an hr line generated in the html.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy access problem - Run-time error 380

2006-05-31 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Kathy,

It seems to me that as you suspect the problem is that your database is
corrupted as a consequence of the download problem. Run Time Error 380 is a
Microsoft error number which often crops up when a program is loading and
the OS cannot find what it is looking for.

On a brighter note, your data files should still be OK and reinstalling the
program will rectify the problem.

RE: [LegacyUG] Maiden-Adopted-Married Surname

2006-06-01 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Mike,

It is necessary to have all the names under the AKA's but there is a bar
there for swopping a selected name for the main name. If I remember
correctly this substitution carries through to reports.

In the Family View clicking the parents tab enables one to identify parental
relationship to the children. Just ensure that the printing of the
relationship is enabled for reports.

Hello Legacy User Group!

Just wanted to throw out a how to question to the group to see if anyone
can suggest a best practice method for the following issue:

My mother was born with the last name of Soncrant, which is how I entered
her information into Legacy 6. When her mother divorced and remarried, her
new husband adopted my mother and her last name became Armbruster. When my
mom and dad married, her last name changed again to Hosmer.

When printing a Descendant report, it shows my dad marrying Pam Soncrant,
but I'd like it show him marrying Pam Armbruster. Besides for entering
Armbruster in the alternate name section, is there any way of having her
Armbruster name appear in the report while showing reference to the fact
that it was her adopted name?

Any tips on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike Hosmer

RE: [LegacyUG] creating a website to include details from a Source

2006-06-01 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Gloria,

Sources attached to events are printed in the web pages (see my web site -
details below) but you must ensure that under OptionsCustomiseSources the
the tick boxes for master source and detail of sources are checked. I would
also check the show ibid for repeated sources.

A word of advice though, on the Pedigree web pages I would ensure that the
sources are printed on the same page as the event. The reason for this is
that otherwise when new people/references are added the old ones no longer
apply thus to update one would have to redo the whole of the site. Maybe OK
for small sites but not for large!

Hi,
I'm a very new user (one month) of Legacy and am trying to build a website.
I exported my file several ways (ancestor and pedigree), which was good
because it enabled me to see all my need-to-be-fixed notes and sources.
But

one thing I would like to do and can't: I have lots of Events info with
sources and details, but when my would-be website is created, all the
particular Source details are absent. I was under the assumption they
would

be included with the Event. I even moved several Notes: General items to
Events with Source details to be more accurate. Am I making this
understandable to someone - sound familiar?

Another thing I did was put info into Events, Unspecified, and that doesn't
even get a source number.

Thanks for any help,
Gloria

RE: [LegacyUG] Adoptive vs. Biological

2006-06-01 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Bruce,

It would seem that you have you do not have your half-cousin linked to her
natural father so you need to link her to the marriage (or rather
non-marriage) of her natural father and natural mother. If you do not want
her adopted father to appear linked to her at all you can remove the link to
her natural mother and adoptive father. It is perfectly possible to have a
child linked to two or more sets of parents.

You can see how this appears on web pages by visiting
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/fergys/genealogy/56.html

I understand that if the person is left linked to both marriages then two
sets of ancestors will be published in written reports, although I have not
tried this myself.

RE: [LegacyUG] renumbering MRIN's and RIN's

2006-06-02 Thread ronald ferguson
May I inject a word of caution into changing RINs. If one uses Pedigree Web
Pages then changing the RINs will make updating the pages impossible as they
are based on the RINs and all of the pages will have to be uploaded onto the
site instead of only those which have been changed. No problem for
relatively small sites but very, very, time consuming for large ones

If I use Geoff's filing
system, I will have so many numbered files empty, because I
have no physical evidence of these long ago ancestors.

I just recently renumbered the MRINs to use the MRIN filing system, however
I still had over 800 families so what I have done is number a file folder
1-25 then another for 26-50 and so on. Not a unique number for each family
but I don't have room for more than 800 file folders and I can live with
the

slight inconvenience of looking through one file folder. One thing I am
going to do though is have a unique file folder for all my direct
ancestors.

Hello,

I am a new user of Legacy. I have used The Master Genealogist for about 5
years (maybe more, time does march on). On the recommendation of a small
publishing house, I took a look at Legacy, downloaded, and imported my full
gedcom for experimentation.

It does look to me like it has some great features, and I might be quite
happy with it.

My database will require a great deal of clean-up, however. I thought
perhaps someone would be kind enough to point me to some websites that
would give me some pointers. I have ordered the CD's. I am proficient at
the Adobe Creative Suite and other softwares, so I am assuming I won't have
TOO bad a time, but would like to expedite the process in any way possible.

All new user tips appreciated! I find it awkward to manipulate the
chronology page - I can't seem to edit everything I want to.

Mind you, I have just downloaded and am experimenting. I WILL read
everything I can get my hands on. My experience on the TMG list tells me
that sometimes present users can tell you where to focus your initial
efforts to the best advantage.

Thanks for your patience with this posting.

Best,

Without thinking, I just added a bunch of stuff about ONE cousin, his wife
and her family in to my DESKTOP Legacy file.

But my most uptodate file is on my LAPTOP.

So-o-o i want to transfer this new info about the one cousin plus his wife
and her family -- or rather add it in to the Legacy file I have on my
LAPTOP.

So I'd like to create a file from the DESKTOP that just contains those
individuals -- the Help instructions tell me to make a search list of the
descendants -- well I do not understand how to do that.

When I click on Search, there is no option that says Create (or Make)
Search list--so can somebody be kind enough to tell me how to do that??

MANY thanks!!!

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with sourcing

2006-06-06 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Steve,

It seems to me that which way to source is an on going question and is very
much a matter of personal chaoice and where the main output from the
research is to be used. If, for example, I was to have an individual master
source for all people who corresponded with me via letters emails etc. then
I would have a large number of master sources. As my main output will be a
website this I do not want.

Instead I have a master sources called letters, emails etc. and in the
detail go the names etc of the correspondants, the repository is, of course,
always me. This saves a lot of web space. As a previous correspondent has
said, the main aim is to enable a reader to find the source - whatever
system is used if it does that it is doing its job.

RE: [LegacyUG] How should I source a copy of a marriage certificate

2006-06-09 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Bruce,

My method is very much the same as Wendy's except that I have the source as
G.R.O. and include the type of certificate in the details ie. bmd. Thus I
only have one source for all certifcates. For births, I place the GRO
reference in the Research notes, for marriages in the marriage notes and
deaths in the death notes. Wendy's method reads better but for births and
marriages I prefer the ease of access when they are in notes.

wife is their step-mother or that they are her step-children. I was using

delete one of each duplicate child? If so, which one should I delete? This

1/2 William Mercer (1946-) (/Mercer/)

RE: [LegacyUG] RECORDING SOURCES

2006-06-11 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Gary,

I am not too clear as to what you are getting ar here. Using the Source
Clipboard sources are readily applied to all people one wishes to. However,
I do not have separate Master Sources for bmds, just one for GRO (in the UK
the government office for the publication of them). I put the type of
certificate in the detail.

I do amend some of the detail though eg. if I obtain the father's name from
an offspring's marriage certificate then I would amend the detail to read
son's/daugh's (name) mc. I cannot really see how this process could be
simplified.

It then appears those most experienced enter details of the Document
(death certificate in the above example) in the Source Detail
(certificate number, names, dates, pages, text, file ID, etc).

All very well understood and logical.

However, my issue with the above methodology when using Legacy is the
difficulty in assigning Detail to more than one family member. Most
certificates for instance refer to multiple family members. Birth
Certificates for example refer to mother, father, and child. It would
stand to reason a Legacy module such as that used for pictures, the
Picture Center, would best serve this process when the detail of various
Sources applies to multiple individuals. A few simple clicks could
assign a birth certificate to every individual mentioned on the
certificate. The same would apply to newspaper articles (particularly
obituaries), and other Sources when more than one individual is referred
to in the Source Detail.

I am interested to hear what others have to say about this. I believe I
may be missing something very key to my sourcing process.
Thanks
Gary

Re: [LegacyUG] RECORDING SOURCES

2006-06-11 Thread ronald ferguson
Not only can you save pemanently a copy of the the Master Source + Detail
but 10 of them! Eg Ignoring the argument as to who the real source for
censuses is, I most commonly use Ancestry.co.uk to search the censuses and
quote them as my Master Source. In the Source Clip Board I have saved Anc41,
Anc51 etc to Anc 01 (1841 to 1901 being the 10 yearly UK censuses). The
master source is thus Ancestry.co.uk + their company details and the author
being HMG (Her Majesty's Government). The details are the census year and
country and one can add the piece number etc if one wants for each
individual to the detail (although I don't bother) and I attach a asved copy
of the census to the picture. Use Save and Load.

BTW. I have rarely found a use for the 5 Source Tabs at the top of the
Clipboard - but there we go!

Marie, I have admittedly not yet used the Source Clipboard. However,
using my understanding of clipboards in general, every new save to a
clipboard overwrites the previous entry. Thus, unless Source data was
pasted to every applicable individual in the same sitting you would have
to reenter the clipboard data each time. Presuming this is correct, it
is the reason I like the way the Picture Center is set up. It permits
assigning pictures to individuals at any time without having to restroke
all the data again.

Re: [LegacyUG] Naming source files

2006-06-11 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Susan,

There are no problems using hyphens instead of underscores in file names for
the web (although I prefer the latter). The only potential issue that I am
aware of regarding upper and lower case letters is that some systems treat
them as the same and others do not. Eg on my system Windows XP folders/files
called Ron and ron are treat as the same but my web server treats them as
different.

In all cases the main main point is to decide on a system, be consistent and
*always* adhere to it.

is probably more about internet files. Like David suggested, I
wouldn't use underscores, but maybe you could use dashes instead.

To minimise Master Sources I would do something like creating an event
called Military (there may already be one in the list - can't remember) in
which one can put most of the details eg date of service, rank, regiment

broad contents and put pretty well everything else in details and detail

Should this information be entered as events, notes, combination of
the two, or some other method? I did search the archives for some

All your your suggestions except the first which uses spaces are perfectly
valid. This is absolutely nothing to do with either Legacy or Microsoft but
variable standards (?) used throughout the industry. As I said previously
the problem only really arises if one starts to create websites. As long as
one avoids spaces, adopts a system that is easy to use and remember and is
always used then there should not be a problem.

There is another alternative. Use Capital letters.

Hi Legacy Users,

We have several changes planned and it's very important that you read this
message.

We are in the process of moving to a new server and there are going to be
some changes. When the change takes place we are going to be switching
from the use of @MillenniaCorp.com email addresses to @LegacyFamilyTree.com
addresses for everyone at Millennia. For example
[EMAIL PROTECTED] will be [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In addition to all of our email addresses changing we are also moving this
list to the new server and it will be changed to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as it has been.

There are a few items that you will each need to do:

1. Each of you should add LegacyFamilyTree.com to your spam filters in
order to continue receiving messages from this list or from any of us here
at Millennia.

2. Once we move to the new server you will have to be very careful when
replying to old messages that were sent from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and make sure you send any replies to the
new email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] or your message
will bounce back to you as undeliverable since the list will no longer be
on the MillenniaCorp.com server.

3. Anyone changing their subscription or unsubscribing from this list will
have to do so again once we move to the new server as everyone from this
list has just been moved to the new list and an unsubscribe here will not
be performed on the other server until it goes live.

4. DIGEST USERS - There are about 200 of you who are digest subscribers
and on our new server we will not be offering digest mode. On the bottom
of each message that is sent to the UserGroup there is a link to
unsubscribe if having each message sent separately is to mush for you.
Wait to do the unsubscribe when you start seeing separate messages which is
how you will know the new server is being used.

We appreciate all of your patience as we work through these changes.

Thanks
