The iTunes 12.7 version is very accessible when ripping audio CD's, not that I
do it too often these days.

RE: Review: Sony Creative Software Sound Forge Pro 11 - Studio Daily

2015-06-29 Thread Brian Hartgen
I agree that Amadeus Pro is ideal on the Mac side, I've used it and it works
very well.

On Windows, in terms of serious audio production without vision, there is
nothing that beats Sound Forge V8 if you can get it, V9 and above have serious
accessibility issues in my view and, despite me reporting these to Sony,
they've not been fixed.

On Windows, for multi-track work I use Sonar 8.5. Again, it's excellent and
allows you to be very precise in terms of achieving a good overall balance of
tracks. I like to be very precise with my editing, and Sonar does not quite
give me the flexibility that Sound Forge does, but we do use Sonar a lot.

If you’re just relying on Sound Forge to record with a simple keystroke then
you’re money is well and truly wastedsmile, Total Recorder for example
records at the touch of a keystroke, just type ctrl-r from within the
Application or set up a global hotkey to record from anywhere.

I’ve not played with Sound Forge Pro for a very long time, Audio Studio does me
so I’m wondering just how many of the “Visual” features in Sound Forge Pro 11 a

If you want to know what my favourite audio package is - for recording,

I'm not a programmer myself so can't comment but - last I heard - SAM

I did myself use SAM Broadcaster for quite a hwile - even at that time - it did

It is hoped that the product will be available with full accessibility

The other good news will be the price, instead of $499 that you pay

Hello Brian:

I mostly listen to my station http://radiogeneral.com from Internet Explorer
using the Flsh add-on, but there are many programs from which you may open a
radio stream, including Windows Media.

I have used MaPlEr for years, because it is truly accessible, but most of
all because you may load a playlist, for instance all the files in a folder,
then navigate in them extremely easy, going from file to file with
down-arrow and up-arrow and advancing and retrocedeing within a file with
just right or left arrow, or in larger increments using Control or Shift
simultaneously.

Finally, you can go to http://stesoft.com and try ShoutOff.

internet radio on a computer? In a search, I came across Mapler, which
seemed to be extremely accessible, at
http://www.mar-dy.com/MaPlEr/MaPlEr.php
However it seems this may no longer be in development, I am not sure.

What please would people recommend? Thank you very much.

Please try just loading the tracks into Studio itself, that's how I have been
testing, not that that should make a difference.
If it still doesn't work, I could later in the week create a little test script
to see if it works. Which jaws version are you using please and I assume you
followed the installation directions to modify the default scripts?

Yes I am. But still no joy.
I play one track, make sure the next track is unchecked, and it stops at the
end but no Jaws warning. Does not matter if I have the PC focused on Studio
  or not.
Does Jaws get the time for this announcement from the screen where it
displays the remaining time. If so it should work, as that time is displayed
  there and accessible via
  alt control T.
I just unloaded all other programs running such as Replay AV and File Dir,
and flashget (A downloader) to see if that made a difference. I played the
first track and it told me I was approching the end but it went off at 1 min
30 seconds before the end instead of the 15 seconds set. Then I tried it on
other tracks and it did not work at all.
This playlist I have been using is a .m3u I have created in Winamp and
loaded into Studio. I am now going to try creating a playlist from Studio to
see if that makes a difference.

Far be it for me to say but what a negative message. Rather than say and
don't work that well, Why not just write to me off list, and thoroughly
document what the problems are. That is the only way things get improved you
know. It is not a great incentive to produce free scripts just to get back
that kind of response. It could well be that they do not function with a
particular jaws version for all kinds of reasons, or some aspect of the
software has changed. In the scheme of things those scripts are quite old now.

My thoughts on the Mapler media player

2009-01-03 Thread Brian Hartgen
content for 90 seconds, a spoken message interrupts the playback
alerting you to the fact that you are running the program as a demo. The audio
then resumes playing until the next 90 second block.

The demonstration is unlocked using an unlock code as is the case with many
software packages which are downloadable from the web.

Areas to Improve:
Please note that some of these observations or suggestions may be due to me not
fully understanding the program.
1. When viewing the content of the playlist, if your screen-reader allows you
to activate a mode where full MSAA information is delivered rather than columns
of data viewable on screen, you may like to invoke this mode. JAWS has such a
facility and System Access will do this anyway by default. While from within
the settings menu it is possible to change the width of the displayed columns,
for even track titles with a reasonable length they were often truncated and so
the screen-reader does not announce them fully.
2. The playlist view is presented with the item number first, then the album
name, artist, then track name. It would be useful if the order of this
information could be changed by the user or perhaps some aspects of it removed,
such as the album title if not desired.
3. Alongside each item in the playlist is an edit window which displays
information such as the current position within the playing track, the total
length of the track, etc. Much of this information is not very understandable
as it contains a series of figures representing the minutes and seconds as
opposed to displaying meaningful text, such as 2 minutes 30 seconds.
A. It is recommended that such information is converted into text which the
user can easily understand as illustrated above. when a screen-reader
announces numerical data continually, even at a slower rate the output can be
confusing.
B. While it is possible to move line by line through the Edit window, it is not
possible to move character by character or word by word to examine it more
closely.
4. It would be nice if the user could specify through the Settings menu a
default location for playlists which have been saved. Currently, if you select
a location to bring an audio file into the playlist, the next time you select a
playlist the program looks by default in the folder just selected for audio
files. There may not be playlists in that folder so it is necessary to browse
to a different folder.
5. If audio is being played, pressing down arrow allows you to view the next
track title in the playlist and the audio for that track immediately begins to
play. The problem with this is that you may wish to view the upcoming tracks
without actually playing them. This is particularly important if Shuffle Play
is selected. I would recommend that a separate list of the tracks should be
made available for viewing purposes only.
6. Pressing Enter on a given track allows you to view its properties or, if you
Tab through enough times, you can change the ID3 tags such as the track title,
artist name, album name, year, etc. It would be useful if these fields had
shortcut keys to move directly to the specific fields in the Dialog so that you
can easily and quickly amend specific parts of the file properties if
necessary. This is important if you have a large number of tracks you wish to
tag correctly and the advantage of this player of course is that you can play
the track if you are unsure what it is before tagging it. The shortcut key
implementation would help a lot.
7. The ability to convert audio cD content to an audio file format would be
very useful. Although programs like CDEX work well, it would be nice to have
that functionality in the program.
8. It would be good to have a means of moving to a specific segment within the
file, such as 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Winamp has an edit box you can invoke
into which a value in time can be entered and it would be advantageous if
Mapler had a similar function.
9. Unfortunately, the developers have fallen into the trap of not conveying all
on-screen text to the user when he or she Tabs through the settings dialog. I
find this often happens with programs. As an example, when a user tabs through
the Settings dialog, the screen-reader will announce Start of Crossfade, 5,
where 5 represents the number of seconds relative to the crossfade. However
the user does not know what this means. Visually, the on-screen text says
Start of Crossfade, 5 seconds before end of track. In fact there are a
number of labels in that dialog where the meaning is not clear. The caption
for each label should reflect the true meaning of the field.
10. The player should ideally have a graphic equaliser.

I think that is all for the time being, but if anyone has any questions about
the player I will try and answer them.

The web site for the player and podcast is at

Hi. A few days ago someone posted a message stating that to use Napster
  with
a screen reader, it was necessary to access using their web based
  interface.
Since I'm considering giving napster a try among other services, I have a
couple of questions. First, if I'm downloading from a web based interface
rather than using their software, is there still something that I need to
download as a subscriber in order to download files? Second, When
  accessing
on the web can one do everything that other users accomplish with
  downloaded
software?

These may sound like beginner questions but my only recent downloading
experience is with Emusic. Very easy to use and super reliable, but their
selection, though interesting, eclectic and with some excellent choices
also has a ton of gaps when it comes to many major artists. So I'm looking

around. No problem paying a bit. I just want it to work.

Napster tutorial

2007-09-23 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

I have produced a brief tutorial on using the Napster program with a
screen-reader. This runs for just over 30 minutes, and contains an
introduction concerning the advantages of using Napster, a little about
installation, downloading individual tracks, viewing all tracks available by
a specific artist, viewing information about albums and downloading them,
viewing albums by various artists, and the Napster options. I also talk
about the best ways of customising your screen-reader for use with Napster.

You can visit my web site at

Re: sound taxi problem seems to be resolved

2007-09-16 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi scott

You need to purchase a sound taxi licence for each machine.

The first thing to say about creating a daisy book is, look ath the PRS
help. I am not being annoying by saying that. It really is extremely well
written and easy to understand help.

However very briefly, The first dialog asks you whether you want to open or
create a new project. You select new.
You then have to specify various parameters about the book in the next two
dialogs, such as the compression, the title, author, etc. Just tab through
them.
When you have your project set up, you select Tools, Import audio. Again,
you have a couple of dialogs where you can specify the phrase detection
parameters and the location of the file to import.
Next you are invited to start the import.

You can import as many files as you like. Once done, you can edit the book
if required, for example, you can divide the book so it has an audio title,
or perhaps headings if you are familiar with the book. If you are not
familiar with it, and you knew you wanted to keep it, you could always
create headings on the PtR2 or other section dividers while listening to it
for future use.

Once this is all done, you build the book by pressing Control+B. This is a
very quick process. Then just put it on a card or CD if you want.

There are lots of other things you could do but those are the very basic
steps.

problem with sound taxi

2007-09-15 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

I have a problem with sound taxi and I wonder if anyone has experienced
this.

When converting an Audible book, the conversion progresses relatively quick
as I would expect. However, when the progress indicator reaches 100 per
cent, it takes at least an hour to show that the file is converted, it could
be much more than that time. Sound taxi leaves at least an hour of blank
space at the end of the converted book as well and I suspect this is what it
is doing when the progress indicator reaches 100 per cent and stays visible.

If anyone has any suggestions I would like to hear about them please. I
wonder how often the software is updated, or how you can tell if you have
the latest release?

Thanks.

Re: Updated Napster Scripts for JFW?

2007-08-31 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi Kane

Thank you for your message. Yes I use Napster every week and don't have any
real problems with it, here are a few things to try.

First, you have an edit field into which you can type the artist or track
you are looking for.
Next to this is a combo box containing items such as artist or track. These
are both accessible.
Once this combo box is manipulated in the way you wish, Pressing Enter wil
usually reveal a list of tracks. You can arrow down to a track, activate
the context menu and select download.
Upon activating the context menu, sometimes you will see an item view
artist page which will be the first item on the menu. You can hit enter on
this item.
Once this is done, I start exploring with the jaws cursor. You can usually
find the title of an album somewhere, or in some instances the phrase other
members downloaded or something similar. Put the jaws cursor on any of
those elements and route PC to jaws. the virtual cursor is then available,
making it possible for you to select albums by pressing enter on the
hyperlink for the album. From there, you can select the download album
link.

I did have a problem a couple of weeks ago when I downloaded an album, and
then wanted to download part of it again. However, Napster will not let you
do this because its internal database thought the tracks were in my library,
which they were not. I called Napster, and they told me which files to
delete in order to rectify that problem. I could find my notes on this and
let you have them if you wanted. They were quite helpful at Napster and
they realise there store is not completely accessible, but I have found it
to be the most accessible music service with the widest range of tracks.

Given that I have used it for about two years or more, I have a lot of
experience in using it and if I can answer anything else please do not
hesitate to ask.

Subject: Updated Napster Scripts for JFW?

Near the end of 2003 I downloaded a short set of scripts for Napster
that were designed for Napster Client 2.0.7.2. These were offered, I
believe, on AccessiblePrograms.com, but are not any more.

Since the iTunes Music Store is largely inaccessible to me as a blind
PC user, especially when it comes to downloading or buying full
albums, I've thought recently about Napster and have gotten a trial
subscription to start with. But I've noticed the Napster client
software is up to Ver. 3.8.1.4 now, and JAWS doesn't seem to respond
to it well without scripts. Brian, I singled you out on this message
because you've written on the Blind iPod list that you use this
service and are happy with it.

But I find that I must use the JAWS cursor to do most of the
navigating; and selecting exactly what I want and getting to all the
background info and all available albums is tricky, with the Virtual
PC Cursor sometimes working and sometimes not.

Anyone have tips? I haven't seen this issue discussed on the JFW list
 since 2004.

Brian,

I certainly don't want to discourage you from writing scripts for this tool
bar for those that want it, but my personal feeling is that the ideal
solution would be for Applien to make it more accessible to begin with. It
would then be just as accessible for all users and not just those running
JFW. Not sure how easy this is with tool bars, but it would be great if
user definable global hot keys could be added for most if not all of the
major functions. This would make it truly accessible.

I do think it is a fairly useful toolbar and expect it will get better as
time goes on, especially if they are able to add Skype recording which isn't
particularly important for me but I know it is definitely something many
folks want.

Hi

Well I now have the Freecorder toolbar working fine. There would not be any

problem scripting this for jaws, as all the toolbar buttons can be built
into a vertical list, or shortcut keys built into them, or both, whatever
people want really, and that's the question. Do people want access to this
program? Is it going to be useful if I do this, baring in mind that it does

not record skype calls. To be frank, I have held back on writing a few
scripts for version 2 of the product because there are other products which
record Skype calls and which are accessible, and where the developers have
obviously gone a long way to build accessibility into the product and I
think that ought to be supported.

As I say, if people think this is of value and they would like scripts,
please let me know. But again, Maybe the developers ought to be persuaded
to build accessibility into the product. It is new after all! This is the
kind of thing Main Menu ought to be following up, and perhaps they would
have done in the live segment this week if problems had not arisen because I

know they were going to talk about recording with Skype etc.

It's on right now and closes on Tuesday afternoon UK time, one would

YouSendIt Replay plug-in scripts published

2007-08-06 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

As the subject line suggests, the scripts for the YouSendIt plug-in for the
A V Replay program have been freely published. Shortly I will create some
kind of page for them on my site, but the direct URL to download the
installer is
www.hartgen.org/YouSendItreplay.exe

The installer is programmed to detect JAWS versions of 7.0 through to 9.0 at
the moment to cater for 9.0 when it is released later this year. As was
pointed out on this list, version 6.20 does not work well with Replay A V
and since these scripts are designed to meet a specific purpose I have not
been concerned about that.

The functionality offered by the scripts is quite automatic as follows:

1. When confronted with the licence agreement screen, ALT+A equals accept
licence agreement, ALT+D equals decline licence agreement, ALT+V equals view
licence agreement. I did not put hotkey help in here because the tutor
message voice prompts you with this guidance automatically.

2. When focused upon the sign in or any other YouSendIt screen, the
virtual cursor is automatically activated and you are advised of this. From
this point just use the application as if it was a web page.

3. Insert Q gives you the scripts version number.

That's all, but at least for jaws users this plug-in is now accessible.

 Hello Bryan

You absolutely can not go wrong with Replay A/V from

 http://www.replayav.com

The wonderful thing about it is that it can record a program, and it
captures the stream without taking over your sound card. So it
records in the background, and you can continue to surf the net or
use your screenreader, without having to worry that your screenreader
will interrupt the recording. The other wonderful thing about Replay
A/V is a tool it has called the URL finder. If you want to record
something, but don't know the address, all you need to do is to
start the URL finder, play the audio you want to record for a minute
or so, and if things go right, the URL finder will get the address,
and you can then schedule it as a new show and record it right then
if it's an archive, or if it's a live show at a scheduled time,
Replay A/V will record it for you. The program requires no scripts
or set files for its use, however if you use Window-eyes, you may
experience a bit of difficulty with the guide you can use to find and
 schedule shows.
It will record mp3, real audio and Windows media streams, and the
included replay converter will allow you to convert any recording to
any other format you choose. So if your stream is a windows Media
one and you want to save it as an mp3, Replay A/V will capture the
stream for you, and then afterwords, convert it to mp3 so you can
listen to it whenever it's convenient for you. To me this is a much
better sollution because no extra sound card drivers can get in the
way, and that's the case, it's much easier and less intrusive. I hope
 this helps.

Re: scheduled recording from the internet

2007-08-05 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi Chris and all

I have obtained this program, and it seems to be very easy to use. I used
the URL finder to get the stream I wanted, and was easily able to schedule a
recording without a problem.

I have not quite worked out the logic in respect of the media guide as yet.
When I selected the station I wanted, the programmes did not start from
today and I could not find for example the omnibus edition of the archers in
there, but never mind.

One great thing is that all the shortcuts are listed in the user guide, so I
have put a file containing them on my pac mate so I can learn them easily.

Again, thanks to the people including Chris and Jonathan who recommended
this. I do have a TV card to capture my TV stations and some UK radio
stations to record which works perfectly, but it's nice to have something
for internet streams.

extracting dVD content

2007-08-05 Thread Brian Hartgen

Has anyone had any luck extracting the content from DVD's using this program

I know I could obtain another program for doing this, the name of which I
think is dVD audio extractor or something like that, but it means paying for

anyone knows any information.

The A V program as it stands is great though.

YouSendIt plug-in for Replay A V

2007-08-05 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

A PC Audio list member wrote to me and ask whether I could script around the
plug-in
for the YouSendIt utility. This allows you to record programmes and
immediately have them Emailed to someone else.

I have now done this. When the sign in screen gains focus, the virtual
cursor gets activated so you can create a YouSendIt account or sign into
your own. Within the programme properties dialog, when you are asked for
the email addresses to send the recordings to and to add an optional message
the virtual cursor again is automatically activated.

There is an issue relating to the licence agreement, where the buttons are
not accessible. This can be easily scripted for, but now I have accepted it
I cannot see the screen so will probably need to install onto a second
computer to do that.

The rest of the Replay programme looks extremely accessible with no
scripting required, but if anyone thinks of anything else before I share
this file please let me know.

I'm going to give a gift certificate for some downloadable music to a

EMusic because of the reasonable price and unprotected
mp3's. However, they seem to cater more toward the 25-54
demographic. I suspect that out of their 2 million tracks our grad
should find a few she wants, but I'm curious if any folks who are
more in tune would advise me to look into a different service. With
EMusic, songs cost about 33 cents each, which I like a lot.

percentage count in Sound Taxi

2007-06-10 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi

A member of this list wanted the jaws scripts for Sound Taxi to be able to
verify the percentage status of converted files on the press of a keystroke.
This is now included within the scripts if you go and get them again. This
can be verified with F8 at any time.

In addition, there is an automatic percentage count feature. This can be
enabled or disabled with F9. The setting is remembered across windows
sessions. If enabled, periodically you will hear a percentage count as the
file is being converted and you are advised when the conversion is complete.
If you switch to another application, and return to Sound Taxi, the
percentage count is resumed.

Jaws scripts for Sound Taxi

2007-06-09 Thread brian hartgen
Hi

I have created some basic scripts for the Sound Taxi program recently being
discussed on this list.  The scripts can be freely downloaded from
www.hartgen.org/portable.html
and select the miscellaneous topics link.]
I can only guarantee them working with Jaws V8 at the moment.

They contain the following features.

The scripts contain what I call a virtual menu bar.  You can press the ALT
key to deploy or dismiss the virtual menu bar.  When selected, press right
and left arrow to move through the options on the menu bar.  Jaws will
announce the focused option together with a shortcut key pertaining to it.
Pressing Enter on any item on the virtual menu bar, or ALT+Tabbing away from
the application, will always dismiss it.

Note that some options have more than one function, such as play or stop
original file.  Jaws is aware when a file is playing and pressing the same
keystroke, or activating it from the virtual menu bar, will stop the
playback of the original or converted file.

Once you have become familiar with the shortcut keys I have included, you
need never use the menu bar if you do not want to.

The other issue fixed was in relation to check boxes not speaking their
state.

If anyone can think of anything else, please let me know.

If I may suggest two features:
 1) A key combo to read the progress of the conversion. Right now one need

 2) A similar script to display the files cued for conversion.

That's all I can think of right now.

Subject: Important for those interested in registering Power Gramo!

 hi folks

I finally did it! Registering PowerGramo, the program to record skype
 calls
 took me quite a while.
To say this was an arduous task is an understatement. The program itself
works very well after it's registered, but registering it is quite a
chore. The thing is that this company prefers to send you your
registration code via skype chat. I don't know about window-eyes users,
 but
with JAWS 7, the only way to read skype chat messages is to use your JAWS
 cursor.
  Oh by, what fun.
Ok, so the dude finally comes online and he sends me a message and he's
 all
like, paste in the code for your product and i'll send you back another
code you can paste in. So I do that and he sends me back one of the
longest registration codes I've ever seen, probably more than 50
 characters
 long.
Ok, so now the question is, how to get this thing from the skype chat
window to the proper dialogue box? What I ended up doing was just writing
it down in note pad and then i copied and pasted it into the dialogue box
 for Power Gramo.
It took me a couple tries, but I finally did it!

So, if you're going to register the program, you might like to get sighted
help to make it easier, or barring that, you could do what i did and write
the numbers and digits into note pad and save it.
As for the program itself, it's awesome. The free version will only
 record
one side of a skype conversation, while the pro version will record both
sides and even split it into separate audio tracks. You will be on the
left side, and your skype buddy will be on the right.
The sound quality can be adjusted in the tools menu, under options. The
slider has 3 settings, 0 percent which is low quality, 50% which is medium
and 100% which is high quality, bet you couldn't guess!!
Window-eyes may read this slider bar differently, but that's how JAWS 7
 reads it.
The program records calls and saves them in its own proprietary file
format, but you can easily export your calls in the file menu, export
 record.
You can choose either Ogg Vorbis, or .wav. Mp3 will be coming in the next
 pro release they say.
To do this, just focus on the call you want to export and then go to the
file menu and do it like I said above. You might even like to create a
folder on your hard drive called calls or something to make it easier.
Remember, the calls aren't automatically saved in .ogg or .wav, you have
 to
export them yourself. So the program itself is extremely accessible, they
just need to work on the registration process!
It's a pain to have to deal with, and I plan on writing to them and
suggesting an alternative method for registration. I suppose I should
 give
the website out for this, i imagine people will wonder what it is? it's
called Power Gramo, and it can be gotten from
 http://www.powergramo.com
The standard version is free and the pro is $19.95.

Re: activating noise reduction

2006-01-02 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi Jerry
I have looked at all the potential internet security possibilities, and no
other sites are affected and all seems OK.

I assume they are closed today, Monday, but are back on Tuesday so will try
to call them then to resolve this. Interestingly, it says on the site that
build 2.0C of noise reduction was uploaded in December 2005 because people
had problems with the older build in respect of activating it. So they must
be aware there are some issues.
Let's hope I can get it resolved.

Thanks.

activating noise reduction

2006-01-01 Thread Brian Hartgen
Hi
I am trying to activate Sony's noise reduction 2.0 on a new computer running
Windows XP Pro, and am getting an error and I wondered if anyone else had
come across this or can give me any other ideas about activating this
product. Sony are naturally closed over this holiday period. Perhaps
someone could also let me know what is the best way of getting hold of tech
support, is it by phone or by e-mail? Thanks.

OK, so to the problem.
I start noise reduction and immediately get the following error:
Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line: 5
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code: 0
URL: file://C:\Documents and Settings\brian hartgen\Local
Settings\Temp\udat\upsell.htm

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes No
If anyone could please help, I would be grateful as I really need to get
this up and running to do some audio work. These things always happen when
you have to get something done don't they?

Thanks.

sound forge 8 and audio CD's

2005-09-06 Thread brian hartgen
Hi
I am about to work with someone who has sound forge 8. In addition to sound
editing, One thing she may want to do is to convert audio tracks from CD
into wav files. I have sound forge 6, and although you can rip tracks
easily enough and very quickly with that, it doesn't go out onto the
internet and get the CDDB information. Does sound forge 8 provide me with
that ability? What does sound forge 8 give me in the way of interacting with
audio CD's please, either in respect of extracting audio CD tracks or
creating audio CD's.

Thank you.

Re: Please, can anybody help a friend?

2005-08-20 Thread brian hartgen

Hi
Well there's good news and bad.
The good news is that this software is quite accessible if you are prepared
to use the jaws cursor. I did recently have one of the creative players
(the Zen Micro) for a short period of time. The hardware wasn't as
accessible as I would like which is why I started using the iPod and the
iRiver, however the transfer software was usable if the jaws cursor was to
be used.
The bad news is that I have forgotten most things about the layout. But if
the software was to be downloaded from a web site, I could perhaps take
another look at this and advise when time permits.

I have had a telephone request from Robert Gourlay, in Scotland. I
certainly am not in a position to answer his query, but I thought I would
pass it on to this list, to see if anyone can.

He is using JAWS 6 Professional, running on XP Professional, and it will
not allow him to use software related to an MP3 player, which is Creative
Labs, and the MP3 player itself is called the Creative Zenn Touch.

He is not on this list, but he has given me permission to publicise his
telephone number, even though this list is public. He can be contacted
on

(number omitted for brevity, contact peter instead)

If you send an email to me, I am quite happy to read it over the phone.

Cheers.

Re: Anapod Explorer and the iPod shuffle

2005-06-26 Thread Brian Hartgen
The first release of the scripts will just focus upon getting music across
from ITunes to the Shuffle and manipulating the software and hardware. Since
I wrote, I have also made it possible to easily view the contents of a CD in
ITunes and import songs into your ITunes library, even selecting
non-contiguous songs is easy to do.
I'll give anything a try, so let's get this release out, then I'll take a
look at the music store.

Hi Brian

Thank you so much for doing this! I am most definitely interested in

At 09:32 PM 6/24/2005, you wrote:

Hi
Here is a message I recently posted to the blind audible list. I wasn't
going to post it here, but given Chris's message, here goes.

I was very much inspired by Anna Dresner's book which I purchased from
national braille press recently, entitled The IPod Experience, to begin
creating some jaws scripts for ITunes.
These scripts will be free of charge, basically because I have created
them since I personally want access to ITunes and the Shuffle to transfer
books from
audible. They should be ready for anyone who would like them some time
within the next two weeks, and if people would like them as and when,
please send

me a message.
At the moment, the following features are included. Please remember I am
at an early stage with this.
1. I have included the ability to track focus in the various lists, for
example what I call the main category list displaying such items as
library, radio,
music store, etc. The good thing is that my scripts do not depend upon
highlight colour assignments to track the focus. This should also apply
to the
list of songs in the opposite list which shows which songs are on the
IPod Shuffle, although this has not been tested yet as I am awaiting my
new IPod

from Audible.
2. The concept behind these scripts is that everything should be
accessible from the keyboard. Therefore, we have a keystroke which moves
you directly
into the library area. Once there, you can use navigational keystrokes
to move forward and back through the available songs in your library.
Jaws will
announce the song in the library as you move to it, and will advise you
when you get to the top or bottom of the list.
3. If you find a song you wish to manipulate in the library with the
library navigation keys, simply select it with a keystroke, then for
example hit delete

or whatever you want to do. For example, enter will play the song.
4. The other thing I have done is to make it possible to drag and drop
into ITunes from windows explorer, and this seems to work well with
audible books.
You find the file you want, copy it to the clipboard with control+C, then
alt+tab over to ITunes, and hit control+V to paste it in there.
That's about it for the moment, but if anyone has any further
suggestions, feel free to let me know.

Brian Hartgen

napster to go with IRiver H320

Hi
Is anyone please using the IRiver H320 with Napster to Go? Apparently this

running, it does not offer me the ability to create a new partnership. I do

Hi
Using the other USB port did not seem to produce any better results, so I'll

I was just looking on the internet, and see a reference to the napster to go
functions only working with USB 1.1 with this player connectivity. Is that
correct?

brian you probably have to use the middle usb port as it supports the
media
to go functions of the player. the end port acts as a regular hard drive
on

the pc and the middle port supports the digital rights management feature.
see if that helps. you may also have to reconfigure the u s b ports in the
menus. in there you will find an option for desktop or terminal support.
don't know what that is so I left it alone.

Hi Jerry
Thanks very much for this, however I have taken the IPod back to the store
this afternoon. I am now on the lookout for another MP3 player, and am
thinking of going for a Muvo from Creative, since apparently the interface
integrates with windows explorer. I can also get a 5 GB version of this
product.

Subject: good news for winamp and ipod's

just got this story in a newsletter.
IPod users are raving about a plug-in that makes the Winamp digital

jukebox

a better way to manage the iPod than Apple's iTunes.

The plug-in, called
ml_iPod,
allows iPod users to bypass iTunes and manage music collections in
Winamp
instead. The iPod is supposed to work with iTunes only. A new version of

the

software was released Monday.

Justin Frankel, creator of Winamp and the open-source peer-to-peer

software

Gnutella, initially developed ml_iPod, but programming was taken over by
Will
Fisher, a computer science student in the U.K.

Fisher and other developers programmed a slew of features, including the
ability to synch multiple iPods with Winamp, create smart playlists
and --
the

most useful option -- the ability to copy songs from an iPod onto a hard
drive.

A lot of the feedback I get is people thanking me for freeing them from
iTunes, said Fisher. It shows the dissatisfaction people have with
iTunes.

Apple Computer did not respond to several requests for comment.

To prevent iPod users from easily copying vast libraries of songs from
computer to computer, Apple forbids tracks from being moved off the
iPod --

songs
can only be put onto the iPod. In addition, each iPod is associated with
a

single copy of iTunes. The association can be changed, but only if all

songs

on the iPod are erased.

Someone who keeps music on her computer at work could fill up her iPod

with
tracks, take it home and copy the songs onto a home computer using
ml_iPod

plugin
and Winamp.

I firmly believe you should have the right to transfer your music with

any

application you like and if this requires software which circumvents DRM
(digital
rights management), then I don't believe this is ethically wrong, Fisher
said. I trust our users to use this freedom responsibly and to not steal
music.

For songs purchased at the iTunes Music Store, which are copy protected
by

Apple's FairPlay DRM scheme, ml_iPod users must download an application

from

the
Hymn project,
which unlocks the copy protection. Then the ml_iPod plug-in must be
configured to run the hymn.exe file when it encounters protected files,
Fisher explained.

The ml_iPod plug-in has been downloaded half a million times. By

comparison,

EphPod,
a free utility that offers similar functionality, has been downloaded

43,000

times from
Download.com.

The plug-in works with all varieties of the iPod, but some users have
trouble getting the software to work with the iPod Shuffle. Fisher said
there are
plans to make the plug-in available for other digital music players.

ITunes for Windows is an approximately 21-MB download. By contrast,
Winamp

is 4.7 MB and the plug-in only takes up 130 KB of space.

ITunes takes up a lot of resources on the computer. Winamp is a lot
faster, Fisher said. Indeed, a lot of our users are still using Windows
98, which
iTunes doesn't work on.

Feedback about the plug-in is generally enthusiastic.

Everything is a breeze and the interface is even easier to use than
iTunes, wrote Doug Sheffer on a Winamp message board.

Using it with third-gen iPod and Windows ME, wrote Brian Cape in the
Winamp forum. Absolutely superb, no problems at all. Congratulations and
thanks
-- I thought I was going to have to upgrade my PC to XP in order to use

the

iPod.

End of story

now maybe we can go to ipods new.
