Could folks share some insights about what kind of growth - height and
weight - that a person might expect in a ram after about 1 1/2 years
old?
Thanks,

I read a comment in one report that the most frequent causes if
mortality in Barbados lambs ***in the feedlot*** are coccidiosis and
parasites.
I imagine in Barbados as in America, if they are going to the feedlot
model to raise lambs, they are subjecting them not only to a highly

Oh, I just get wierd about things sometimes Cecil! :o) If I could
really walk my talk, I'd have the authority to say such things, but
I'm just a beginner with high ideals. It does matter to me though,
tremendously, for a lot of reasons. The sheep are an integral part of
it, but not the

The poor little goldbrickers are having to endure a **gasp!** shower at

If you confine them to a smaller area of daisies, and move them once

almost anything. Now if only I could get them to get rid of all the

so grateful to the Flemings, who have given me all the benefit of
their years of breeding these sheep, all in a neat little flock of
youngsters! And to Ron for getting them here in such great shape.
A pretty exciting day here at Blacklocust Farm! :o)

Does anyone have a program for tracking health records/birth records,
etc. for their sheep? I would be interested in any consumer reports
as I am interested in buying something. Even with very few sheep, I'm
finding it a bit awkward to jot notes on the calendar.
Thanks!

Question: As a general rule, will the teeth of a 2 month old lamb line
up with the dental pad, or will they go through some growth spurts
before the bite is fully established?
Thanks!

My bottle lamb had what sounds like the same thing. The vet said it
was milk
scours. He had me take the lamb off replacer and give her nothing but
electrolytes for 1 day. The next day start mixing the electrolytes

replacer, with the replacer watered down more.

Carol,
I don't know if you can adapt this to your situation, but I have built a
number of gate latches using cattle panels as gates, and the idea
might somehow work.
To close a cattle panel gate solidly against a post, I screw a couple of
large eyes into the post, then push the cattle panel
This is the philosophy of a famous horse trainer, but horses are herd

In every animal society there is a pecking order. The top dawg gets the

Hi Karen,
Barb Lee in W. Oregon here. Everyone's got different reasons for
lambing at different times, and that's the nice thing about the
polyestrous blackbellies! :o) I'm working my program toward a good

Karen,
I am not feeding hay at this time, because there's still enough grass in
my pasture not to stress it by overgrazing with my small number of
sheep. When I weaned, my two remaining adult ewes needed to put on some
condition (one raised twins, the other triplets, unassisted), so after
Dayna, you should be able to obtain beet pulp, either as pellets or
crumbles, at just about any feed store - they are an important horse
feed, particularly for endurance horses. My horses eat a mash of soaked
beet pulp and various supplements every day and are quite fond of it.

Have been passing out some samples of this remarkable harvest of
blackbelly lamb - Bob gave some to a retired Greek restauranteur from

Ya never know Brad, it may just be worth the drive! :o)

start commanding respectable prices for them! There is no way to go but
up with these critters. But there's strength in numbers and we need to
combine our strengths at a local level to start moving ahead into a wide

Julie,
Kelp is used as a natural mineral supplement for all classes of
livestock, and people too! It comes in a 50 lb sack usually, in a
granular form.
Kale is a plant similar to cabbage, and is planted as a succulent winter
feed. (It is also people food.) The animals are turned out on it

I know there is some concern as to whether tilting tables are
appropriate for blackbellies, so I will wait until we've had a chance to
use it before I provide pictures.
I can see nothing harmful or hurtful about it, and I think it can be
used to immobilize the sheep vertically for shots and
between 10 months and 15 months, but there CAN be a
big difference in winter butchered vs. early summer butchered lamb.
But I don't know how much of a market there is for hogget.
Opinions?
