No , but when I was down loading windows updates the other day a 
security dialogue popped up and said that something was detected I do 
not remember what it was but it went away a few seconds later and then 
started to down load three windows updates and every thing worked fine.


so I do not know if it got rid of what ever it was or not.

I am assuming that it did because every thing seems to work fine.

[JAWS-Users] a possible bug
Since todays’ update things are not reading properly for me when I arrow 
up, down or around for some strange reason.


I can’t explain it exactly how this thing is acting.

Does anybody have this issue with you’re respective systems.

I do not have windows defender so that can not be the problem, I have 
McAfee live safe but I have seemed to have fixed the problem for now


I am just wondering if I clear the windows update history if that would 
work the next time it happens so is there any one on the list that knows 
how to clear the windows update history?

I've had Windows update get stuck like that using Windows 10. Seems 
Windows Defender and Windows update don't always play nice together. So 
I went into
Windows defender, checked for and applied updates, then reran the 
Windows update again. So far, it  fixes the problem for me.

I am having a problem with windows defender all of a sudden in the 
action center it says that windows defender is protecting my computer 
but I do not have windows defender the only thing is that I have is an 
icon of windows defender in my control panel that when I use to enter it 
said that windows defender is turned off and now all of a sudden it just 
has the scan page listed when you enter the icon in control panel and 
when I went into windows update it had a definition ready to down load 
for it.


my windows fire wall is off

I am very puzzled by this

when I enter my McAfee live safe program which I have as my anti virus 
program it says that everything is turned on including the personal fire 
wall but it is no longer listed in action center how can I fix this so 
that it is McAfee live safe listed in action center and not windows

If you want to make Jaws work with Thunderbird using the up to date 
version and you do not have the up to date version of Jaws for example 
you have only Jaws 17 or an earlier version. Then to make it work you 
have to go into the view menu and arrow down to sort by and press enter 
then you have to arrow down the list and press enter on Threaded this 
will change the list view to a tree view and then Jaws 17 or earlier 
versions of jaws will work with the up to date versions of Thunderbird.

Jaws 18 works fine with Thunderbird but if you have only the early 
versions of jaws to make it read your messages in the in box or other 
boxes you have to switch the list view to a tree view to do this go into 
the view menu and arrow down to sort by and press enter then arrow down 
to threaded and press enter and then jaws will begin to read your 
messages in the in box and I must add that you have to do this for all 
the boxes for example the sent items and so on

learn Thunderbird.  The instructor isn't real familiar with Windows and 
said it
looked like Jaws can't work with this email program.  He said another

Hi,
The last time I use Mcafee it was not very accessible because about two or
three moths ago they change the user interface. So I figured since it was
not accessible with Jaws I would just use Windows Defender as it is
accessible.

Hi Maria,

I figured it out why jaws was saying I have one new message and when I 
went to my in box there was no messages it was because in my web mail 
program there was a message that seemed to be stuck in their so I 
managed to delete it and everything is working fine now in my 
Thunderbird program  now

I figured it out to run a manual scan first you have to click on 
security and then you click on virus scan secure and then a window will 
appear with your last scan and your next scan and you arrow or tab one 
more time and click on scan button and the scan page will appear  and 
then you just click on the scan type that you want.

Since the users interface has change it seems to me it is not accessible
with Jaws any more. When my subscription runs out in September I will be
using Windows Defender. By McAfee not being accessible any more this seals
their fate with me.

If you ever accidentally delete something, & want to retrieve it from the
Recycle Bin, you can get it this way as well:
open the Recycle Bin, & highlight the item you wish to Restore
2. With the item highlighted, open the context menu with the Applications
key or Shift + F10, arrow up / down to, Restore, & press enter. The item /
folder / file will now go back to wherever it was deleted from.

when I was finished I printed it out then when I went to close the 
program off I got a not responding dialogue does any one know what might

This is a multi page area
use control tab to get to the page you desire and then tab through the page
some of the pages are general, send, receipt, read, compose, signature etc.

Yes if you change the list view to a tree view this will work for 
earlier versions of jaws.


To do this just go to the view menu and arrow down to sort bye and press 
enter and then arrow down to threaded and press enter to check this will 
change the list view to a tree view and then earlier virsions of jaws 
will read the messages in your in box.

I believe that if you set your folder views in thunderbird to threaded 
the older versions of JAWS will read them. I have seen this mentioned on 
several

different email lists I am on.

screen should be .


on my key board the print screen is to the right of the F12 key which is 
at the very top of the key boardjust a few inches from the F12 key

Hi all,

earlier I wrote that I could not get jaws 15 to read my messages in the 
list view it would only say list view when on a message but with a 
suggestion from a list member it now reads my messages that come in.


In order to get jaws to read messages when in the list view go to the 
view menu and arrow down to sort bye and arrow down to threaded and 
press space bar this will change the list view to a tree view and jaws 
will begin to read your messages in the tree view instead of a  list view.


It worked on my computer and I am using jaws 15.0.1285

hi all using Thunderbird 52.0  every since 52.0 down loaded on my 
computer Jaws only says list view in the message area how can I


and also I have noticed that in the add-ons section I had four plug ins 
that are no longer their could this be the reason.fix this so jaws reads 
the headings of my messages like it use to with the previous versions of 
Thunderbird?


I tried restarting my computer after it finished down loading but no 
success.

this version just down loaded this morning and every thing works fine 
except when I go to read my mail all it is saying is list view and does 
not read my mail that I have in the in box what I mean is when I go to 
select a message all it says is list view

I just did it to one of the web pages I will have to let you know the 
next time I go on it?


I have no idea what causes these ads to appear.

but it is really annoying when you have to go through all that garbage 
before you can read what you want.

Hi Anna,  maybe I can be a little more help.
First open a page where you are seeing one of these ads.
Then move to the ad.  They are often in a frame.
Open flexible web and choose "create a new customization" and press 
enter or tab to the next button and press enter
Then choose "hide an element" and press enter or tab to the next button 
and press enter.  This will bring up a list of elements you can hide.

This is where it gets interesting and I find you often have to experiment.
You then choose the element you want to hide and press enter or tab to 
the next button and press enter.
There will now be choices which very depending on the elements you are 
wanting to hide and it can take some experimenting to get it to do what 
you want.
The last part is whether you want to apply to a specific page or across 
all pages.

You then have to give it a name and your done.
I realize the instructions get a little fuzzy but I am not an expert on 
this and it does take some playing with it.

I hope this might get you started.

Well I don't have specifics on setting up flexible web but I do know 
that jaws is not correctly announcing the number of radial buttons.  At 
that point
there is only the one.  I believe that when modifying a setting you have 
already created more of the buttons become available.
I have been able to get it to work but it is still foggy to me on 
exactly how to go through making the changes I want.

Does anyone know of any SF podcasts addressing the subject?

I just want to know when I go into action center it says that windows 
fire wall and McAfee Fire wall are both turned on but when I click on

Hi Tom,

I do not know if you understood my first  I posted to the list because 
it was a bit gibberish in my explanation so I am going to post it again 
for you.


to get to your mail in your in box:

when you first open the program you should land in your in box so just 
shift tab and you should hear jaws say list view or you can just press 
the tab key and it will take you to the in box tab so press it again and 
it will take you to the in box tree view so press it again and it will 
take you to the list view and all you have to do is down arrow through 
your messages.


If you land on your email address when you first open the program:

for example if I landed on my email address which is :

an...@etown.net and it says closed all I would have to do is right arrow 
to open and then down arrow to my in box and then use my tab key to get 
to the list view to read my messages

Yes, we received that update for all our computers, but no other important
updates.  We did receive a couple of optional updates for 1 of our
computers, but like I said, no other important updates.

Hi Gerald my adobe flash player is usually updated by windows update can 
I still update my flash player from the web site you have listed below 
without messing things up


what I mean is if I use the web site to update my flash player will

As for when Windows 8.1 will go into history: January 2023.

thanks I will remember this for the next time

I did it a different way all together how it worked I do not know but it 
worked I did it this way:


first I unselected everything and then pressed the application key and 
when the dialogue came I entered control panel in the edit field where 
it says type the location of the item and then entered on okay and on 
the next dialogue where it says type the name of the short cut you want 
I typed control panel and then entered on finish


and it worked

Press enter on open file location. Once you are there you will have

here is how I did it:

restore.  I don't run Windows 8.1, so I can't be precise on the langueage.

could someone on the list please tell me what pin to start is for?

I was trying to make a short cut for control panel on my desk top so I 
typed control panel in the search box on the start screen and then 
pressed the application key and it has pin to start and pin to task bar 
which of the two will put control panel on the desk top?


I am using windows 8.1

any help will be greatly appreciated

month because I only got 2 windows updates and they were for adobe flash 
player and the malicious removal tool


there were no monthly roll ups or quality monthly roll ups for the month 
of January.


I am using windows 8.1  64 bit machine

and I just wanted to make sure before I contact micro soft for help

frame workfor the month of January?


I need to know because when I checked my windows updates this morning it

did you try my suggestion?

by going to the account page at

and changing the appropriate  setting on your account page, that will 
allow you to receive your own messages

This another test to see if I can receive my own email postings. I have
been able to receive the jaws-users postings to the list but not my own
postings.  A freedomscientific tech remotely got on my computer and checked
out jaws 17 and jaws 18 and did find a problem but I don't know if it will
help the problem that I mentioned but I am giving it a try to see if I can
receive my postings.  Sorry about putting all of the test messages on the
list but I know no other way.

Hi,
Three reasons:
1. Reducing fragmentation: because people chose to install updates they
wanted, it became a bit hard for Microsoft to track down issues and come up
with workarounds as quickly as possible, hence cumulative update model was
implemented in an attempt to reduce this.
2. Ease of deployment: the idea behind this move is to get people up to
speed in getting their computers updated to latest patch level in one move.
3. Windows 10's influence: Window 10 embodies the above reasons when it
comes to CU's (at times, cumulative updates caused issues).

If you're talking about MS Critical Updates, nothing more than ensuring 
either they're turned on or that you manually check periodically.

A few days ago I sent a post to the list about windows update taking too 
long to check for updates it was as if it was getting stuck.


I just wanted to let you all know that I fixed it by going into action 
center and entering on the trouble shooter link and on the list of items 
that appear enter on windows updates and then enter on the trouble 
shooter and it will find and fix the problem automatically.


oh yes I am using windows 8.1
