Re: [LegacyUG] Kemp family history
Your best bet is to learn how to do genealogical research of your own, concentrating on your own family. Firstly, do you have you own family recorded on genealogy software either on your computer or in the cloud? I am a great believer in personal storage of my research on my own computer using the Legacy Family Software but there are subscription websites such as MyHeritage.com and Ancestry.com (which may have a local Australian branch Ancestry.co.au) which do allow subscribers to have their family tree data stored on the companies computers. Legacy Family Tree software has a free version that is very powerful and does not limit the number of records you can keep. The benefits of the paid version are the many additional features the paid version provides and it is well worth the modest cost. See LegacyFamilyTree.com to view the software features and download the free version as a trial to see if you like using the software before purchasing the paid version. The LDS church also has a world-wide presence and is the repository for billions of online genealogical records. Their website familysearch.org also has beginner training material for those just getting started in doing genealogical research. You need a user ID and account to access their website but these are free to anyone as is access to the church-held records. Legacy Family Tree (sponsor of this user group) also has a webinar website with many training resources, some of their webinars are free but most require a subscription/membership (less than USD 50 per year). It has even been sponsoring a series of Australian focused webinars that you may find useful. There are three variations for a "Descendant Report" A Descendant Chart Report, a Descendant Book Report and a Descendant Narrative Report. For the Descendant Book Report open the Report options and check the "other Spouses" on the include tab. Re: [LegacyUG] Canadian 1931 census
Have you seen the new Canadian Archives search page? https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Census/Index It lets you search all their census records at one go. This new page replaces all the old individual census year search pages and the results pages from the search are very different as well. The census page image is now embedded in the person's results instead of being a link. The download button allows download of the image or download of a pdf with all images. It also now has a copyright agreement you have to accept before downloading. I have had to seriously modify my workflow when adding these new results to my source citations for Canadian Censuses. I think Legacy will have to make a lot of changes to the census searches and templates to match this new way of doing things at Canada Archives. [LegacyUG] 1931 Canada Census
I was just on the Library and Archives Canada website for a search of the 1871 Canada Census for a relative. I discovered that the 1931 Canada Census is now available for searching by name. Here is the URL of the new Multi-census search tool. You can search for your Canadian relatives in any or all of the Canadian censuses list on the search page. The 1931 Census is now included in that list and I am doing a genealogy happy dance because I am looking at the census page for my father! Here is the description of the 1931 census from Library and Archives Canada: "The seventh national census was taken on June 1, 1931. Information was further condensed into four schedules: Schedule 1: Population Schedule 2: Agriculture Schedule 3: Institutions Schedule 4: Merchandising and service establishments Only Schedule 1 was preserved and it had 40 questions. In the 1931 Census three different forms of the population scheduled were used: Form 1A for the Maritimes and Québec and Ontario Form 1B for the Western provinces Form 1 - N.W.T. for the Northwest Territories In one instance a rather resourceful enumerator, used an accountant’s ledger book to record information. The 1931 Census was the first to ask if the family owned a radio. Since this Census was taken during the Depression, there are also several questions related to unemployment, including periods of unemployment and causes. The sub-district names or boundaries in 1931 are not the same as those for 1921, particularly for large cities." Yes, You will need to copy the Legacy folders from their current location to the new drive/documents before you open Legacy after redirecting Windows to the new drive. When legacy starts if it does not see the _appData folder in the Windows Documents folder for the user it will create a new one using the default copies from the Legacy Install files in the Windows Program Files folders. Re: [LegacyUG] which date?
What "Event" are you using? If you say the Clipping is an Obituary then that event definition is automatically marked to be excluded from the potential problems and the event date will not be reported. My practice is to only use Newspaper articles as sources for the events they report. The date of the clipping then is the date published for the source not the date of the event. In the case of a death notice I normally just use the clipping as a death source. When I use the obituary event the date of the clipping is then the date of the obituary. The Obituary sentence definition is [HisHer] obituary was published in the [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace]. So the Desc should be the name of the newspaper and the clipping date becomes the date published. Place would be the location of the newspaper (some obituaries are published in papers far away from the place of death). The examples of that I have seen are obituaries published in a paper where the person is being interred or where one of the survivors lives. Re: [LegacyUG] Importing a .paf file into a new LFT file
Gene, What you are seeing is probably because PAF did not support the use of Sources. Because of that people would insert their source details into the notes preceding them with a special character (I think it was an Exclamation Point) Since notes may or may not contain source info and there could be multiple source entries in a note Legacy cannot extract and create sources from those note entries. I do not think there is any way except to bite-the-bullet and manually create a source from those PAF note entries. You can create a search list from those using each census event and work through it until you have created sources for each one. Slow but sure will win the race. I have been working since June in my file and have successfully worked through to add 1911 and 1901 Census events from the Canadian Archives. I finished the 1911 census and started the 1901 census on 17 Aug there were 706 starting people in the 1901 list and yesterday I had the count down to 390. Re: [LegacyUG] 3rd Q - third quarter
I presume you are using the British GRO records office BMD Index quarters and Legacy has a date format for those. Use the LAST month of the Quarter Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec followed by Q ie. Mar Q then the year. This is all explained in the Help file. Open help and search for dates, you will see an entry for Quarter dates. Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Page Numbers to already-created PDF Reports
Have you tried creating your group of reports using the Publication Centre? That will create a single document with all the pages correct and (for those things you want to insert you can reserve pages (and amend page numbers for following chapters) using the space holder option in the Pub Centre. Not sure how you pulled all your parts into one PDF but by first creating your Legacy report in the Pub Centre you could then use the page numbers assigned for the place holders to start your insert document page numbering to fit your Legacy report, then when they are merged the pages in the Legacy report and those in your additions can fit together into one continuous sequence. Brian Kelly On 03-Jul.-22 8:05 p.m., Cindy Custer wrote: I generated multiple PDF files in Legacy for different reports (Descendants by Generation, Family Groups, and Descendants Migration Charts etc.) I treated each Legacy report as a separate Chapter of my overall Genealogy Book. Then I created additional chapters like Emigration Triggers, The First Immigrant Analysis and Argument, etc. using Word and saved them as PDF files. I then pulled all these files and PDF reports together into one single PDF File that I titled (MyName) Genealogy Book. The Descendants by Generation chapter has report-unique page numbers that allow the Name Index at the back of that report to work. Likewise, the Family Groups report pages are renumbered for each unique family Group. Some have just 1 page, larger families have 3-5 pages, each family starting with page 1. ** *My question is this:* Is there any way to assign and _consecutively number the pages in the entire Genealogy Book PDF file_? In that way the Descendants by Generation Report pages would each have 2 page numbers – their report-unique page number _inside_ the lines surrounding the data on each report page *and* the overall Genealogy Book sequential page number at the bottom of the page. -- LegacyUserGroup mailing list LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com To manage your subscription and unsubscribe http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com Archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/
Re: [LegacyUG] Name Question
I come firmly down on the side of those who leave unknown names blank for all given names. For a surname I will use the surname of the child for a father with an unknown name. If I only have a given name for a wife I will leave the surname blank. If I have no details on a wife I will just not enter anything, Legacy will assign RIN 0 to the unknown wife as a space holder until I enter some information at which time she will get a real non-zero RIN. That means you have the couple married to each other twice. You say there is different information for the two marriages so you will want to reconcile that. Re: [LegacyUG] 527 Error "At least one 'skipping file' event was triggered ..."
The most common cause of that "error" is that one of the files being added to the backup is in use so the backup is not able to include that file, windows will not allow the backup process to access the file so it had to be skipped, hence the wording of the message. I am not aware of any way to determine what file was skipped. Perhaps you may want to submit a suggestion that the Backup include the file name for any files that were skipped. Some precautions you can take to avoid the message are: 1. Make sure that all the auxiliary Legacy programs such as FamilySearch and Charting are closed so they are not accessing files associated with your Family File before doing a backup. 2. If you have opened a source referenced by your file (Perhaps a PDF or Word document) to consult while working in Legacy make sure that you Close the PDF reader of Word before making your backup. 3. Stop the Hints processor by double clicking on the 1 for the first quick bookmark. Brian Kelly On 23-Sep.-21 2:30 p.m., Kim Spenceley wrote: Suggestions for this problem. Re: [LegacyUG] US State Names
Chris, Entering locations in a Legacy file does NOT affect the Geo database (GeoDB). That is a separate database that is not connected to the Legacy file. You can use the GeoDB to populate the Master Locations list in a Legacy database but that is a one way copy from the GeoDB to the Legacy file and entries in the Master List/Location do not copy to the GeoDB. You are also wrong in thinking that opening View > Master Lists > Location will include the contents of the GeoDB. The editing of the Master List of Locations only affects entries in the Legacy Database. There are tools to merge Locations in the Master list to make the list standard so you can merge an entry of Newark, CT, USA with the "correct" Newark, New Haven, Connecticut, United States entry so all uses of Newark, CT, USA are changed to Newark, New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Brian Kelly On 21-Sep.-21 2:15 p.m., Chris Hill wrote: If you have been entering incorrect locations then it will have effects. Firstly, the information will added to the inbuilt location database and may then be used for other location entries that match. Remember that Legacy will always show the nearest, ie matching at the start, entries as you make new additions. If you have downloaded the Legacy Geo Database you will be making additions to the entries there. What you need to do is to open View / Master Lists / Location. This will show you a list of all the of locations in the system - both the Geo Database and your own. Given that your entries are variations on the Geo Database list, you then have the ability to merge the incorrect ones with the valid ones. Just select a group which are wrong, click on Combine, select the valid one and click on Combine With. If are no valid versions, then you just need to edit your entries, and combining where needed. From Options you can delete incorrect entries, so long as they are not in use. Options / Print / Location Report will give you a list of all or those in use, showing who is using them - this can take a long time to run. Also note that legacy has different ways of viewing the location, basically from inside to out or from outside to in - LA, California, US or US, California, LA. Re: [LegacyUG] Saving Problems
For the future, this is not the forum for this type of question. Outlook accounts have nothing to do with Legacy Family Tree. Is there a forgot password, forgot user name or other link on the page where you are trying to log in to your outlook account? If so try that. If not is there a "contact us" link, that might get you a way to contact outlook support. There must be something in either your computer settings or your security software settings interfering with that process. If you are really working from the copy of your database on the C drive, that is the latest version. Backups are for emergencies. Cathy Bob Austen <mailto:rgaus...@telus.net <mailto:rgaus...@telus.net>> Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:22 It is normal to save your working file on your computer’s internal hard drive. It looks like you have saving your file to ‘Documents/Legacy Family Tree/Data’. Is this file on your C:/ drive? Is the C:/ drive big enough to handle your file with lots of room to spare? If you are using your thumb drive for your working file is that the file that Legacy is opening/using? If you are opening your file from your thumb drive it is likely that the file is being saved there too so, of course, the file on C: drive would not be updated. Legacy automatically saves the data as it is being entered (posted) (actually, when you leave the edit screen). And it saves it to the file that you have designated which, I assume, is C:/ Documents/Legacy Family Tree/Data/filename.fdb You can check that by looking to the very top of your open family tree file. When you add/change any information in your tree it is saved each time as you leave the edit screen. I do not understand when you say that ‘these changes are not uniformly saving to the C: drive’. It comes back to which file are you opening and working from – the one on your thumb drive or the one on C: drive. I don’t think it is good practice to try to work from your backup devices, that is, your thumb drive and/or your WD storage drive – use those for backup. I back up my file to a thumb drive, a separate internal drive, the cloud and an external WD storage drive but my work is always done on my main drive in my computer. This way my latest file is always on my computer and my backup copies are on the other devices. Again, trying to work from your backup copy on a thumb drive would be confusing and may be risky. To backup I simply copy the file to my thumb drive and my second internal drive. None of the files are compressed. There is no need to compress the files, however that happens if you have Legacy backup your file when you exit. Legacy does that to keep your working copy and your backup copies separate. Error 70 and Error 75 have different meanings on different devices. Here it could be that your thumb drive is full. With only 456 names your file is going to be quite small. Re: [LegacyUG] Help to print Family Group Record generation by generation
You can batch print many Family Group Reports as a single document but you will have to select the people individually if you want to print them for one generation at a time and only for males. If you set up a focus group with the descendants of a line starting with the end of line ancestor(s) you will get both male and female descendants and you will not have control of the order in which the FGR reports will print. Sorry, I was wrong in assuming you could control the order in a batch. I just tried my suggestion and selected two individuals by name in a focus group but they did not print in the order selected. I now suggest you set up your report using the publication centre where you can add multiple FGR reports in a specific order. Brian Kelly On 17-Jul.-21 10:51 a.m., Cynthia N. Valerie, When you use Windows search you are seeing many things which are not GEDCOM files. Windows is showing anywhere that ged is included in a file that is why there are text documents, spreadsheets and all the other file types in your 9 pages of results. The .zipped files may be a compressed copy of a GEDCOM file or may be a compressed file which has any type of file which contains ged. The only true GEDCOM files are those with the .ged file extension and they will show when you use File > Import > GEDCOM in Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] Assistance & Guidance
My condolences on your loss. To address your questions about preserving his work in Legacy. The easiest way to do this would be to create a backup of his data and media files and write those to a CD/DVD or save them on a memory stick. You could include those with his hard copy paper files. The beauty of Legacy is that anyone who wishes can download a free copy of the software and use it. The free version has no restrictions on size of file nor on how long it can be used. What the paid version adds are bells and whistles that make the software more useful like the ability to create PDF copies of reports, additional views of the families like descendant view. The legacyfamilytree.com website has a comparison between the free and paid deluxe version here: https://legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp Speak to the Historical Society, they may have the ability to open Legacy files if they have a library/reading room with computers which already have Legacy installed. If so they can restore your father's files on their computers for access by patrons. Yes because you simply look at the copies in the Dropbox folder on your hard drive. Re: [LegacyUG] How to Backup to Drop Box please
To have things transfer between Dropbox and your computer(s) you place the files in a special Dropbox folder on your computer's hard drive, it is created by the Dropbox software. The Dropbox software on your computer will also allow you to open the files at the Dropbox site so you can manage them. To have your backups go to Dropbox just tell Legacy to save your backups to that Dropbox folder. For pictures I would suggest you create sub-folders in your Dropbox folder so you can organize the pictures in some way. I think Dropbox may already have a document sub-folder for your general files. Place the originals (or copies) in that folder. Brian Kelly On 07-May-21 10:20 a.m., Joy L wrote: Hello, I have forgotten how to use DropBox. Can someone tell me how to save my Backups to DropBox. Valarie, Not sure what you mean by "just an ordinary ancestry test" but modern DNA tests are Autosomnal? and the results are too complex to record in Legacy (as I understand it from reading posts on the Facebook Legacy User group the results are files containing 1000's of values). The originator of this thread was looking for where to enter one of the older mt DNA test results which have a limited number of entries and can be recorded in Legacy's DNA records. What version of legacy 9 are you using. You should be on build 9.0.0.384. I have a vague recollection that there was a problem with the Family view display for burials. Access the people you want excluded and mark them as either private or invisible. Private may allow you to suppress their information but include only the name (experiment). Re: [LegacyUG] Birth parents vs Adoptive parents
Add the two biological parents if they are not already in your database, mark them as no evidence of a marriage (the new wording for this couple did not marry). If they are in your database just select them or create a marriage between them if they are not married to each other. Attach the youngster to the couple as a second set of parents, using link to existing son. You will be warned he already has a set of parents. Go to the adoptive parents and right click on any child then select Children settings. Select the adopted son and set his rel to mother and father as adopted. I do not have your problem so I am just guessing here. You could try clicking the options button on the Chronology Screen then selecting Report to create a Chronology Report for the individual. Re: [LegacyUG] Family file in use
This can happen if Legacy does not close down correctly. A filename.ldb file is left in the folder where your file is stored. It can also happen if you have Legacy Charting or Legacy Family Search running when you try to open Legacy because those modules also open your family file. Shut down any open Legacy, LegacyFamilySearch or LegacyCharting programs. Use Windows file Explorer to access the folder where your Family file(s). Look for and delete any .ldb files you find. Re: [LegacyUG] Source Clipboard - Using as a submenu
Larry, It is not possible to select a single tab from the clipboard when the clipboard contains multiple tabs. The whole point of the multi-tab clipboard was to allow a use to load a set of sources which they can apply simultaneously. To achieve what you want to do (have multiple sources and able to choose a single one for use) you can use the Save Clipboard feature. You can save up to ten clipboards. You would first set your clipboard to hold only one source at a time. Load the Ancestry Record to the clipboard then save that clipboard in one of the 10 slots. Set up the FamilySearch source on the clipboard and save it in a second slot. Now when you want to use one of those sources, open your clipboard. Load the source you want to use then apply it to the records. Brian Kelly On 29-Oct.-20 10:00 a.m., Larry Lachance wrote: When using the “Source Clipboard” – I find (and according to the help section) that when I use it to add a source, ALL of the sources in the clipboard (ie; tab 1, tab2, tab3) are added to the field I want to provide the source for. What I would like (and not sure if the clipboard will work in this manner) is to use the clipboard to choose the source from just a single tab depending on my need. For example, I sometimes use Ancestry to find a record and then I will find the same record at FamilySearch. BUT – I only want to cite one record or the other, not both. So what I’m trying to find is a way to choose tab1 or tab 2 as my source. I know I can add both at the same time and then delete the one I don’t want but that defeats my purpose. Another example – I use Quebec parish records often. Sometimes I am switch my source from one parish to the adjacent parish because some families have baptisms, marriages and deaths between the two adjacent parishes. While the master source is the same, ie; Quebec Parish Records, the detail is different, ie; Notre Dame de Quebec vs. Notre Dame de l’Assomption. Tab 1 would be the Quebec and Tab 2 would be the l’Assomption. I would like to be able to select accordingly. Is it possible to use the source clipboard to choose which tab I want to use for a particular citation without adding all of the sources in the clipboard at the same time? Confused? Hopefully this question makes sense. Re: [LegacyUG] need help with text size, please
I do not think there is a way to change the font size in the Legacy Family Search (LFS) window. I looked for a font size setting in the Options without success and when I tried to change the size of the LFS window the text on the screen stayed the same size no matter how small or how large I made the window. If you have Windows 10 it has a "Magnifier" included in its features for those with vision problems. The item can be found in the "Ease of Access" section in Windows settings. When activated the Magnifier creates an area of your screen which magnifies everything behind it, much like looking through a magnifying glass. The limit is not on the number of people in your file but the overall file size. The maximum file size allowed by the database is 2 gigabytes (you will have problems when the size approaches the limit) If you have a lot of long notes in Events, Stories, etc. the space for a single person grows quite large (each note can be up to 1,000,000 bytes). A bare-bones entry with only 'vital events like Birth, Baptism, Death and Burial and no notes or events takes only a couple hundred bytes. Re: [LegacyUG] Date problem
Gwen, The way Legacy interprets numeric dates like 4 10 1942 is based on your Windows settings for dates. You seem to have our Windows dates set to mm, dd, so 4 10 1942 is interpreted as Apr 10 1942. If you want 4 10 1942 to be read as 4 Oct you need to change your windows date setting to dd, mm, . PS 14 10 1942 would be correctly interpreted because the 14 cannot be a month so Legacy knows it is a day and then reads the 10 as a month. Re: [LegacyUG] Blank Pages on PDF Ancestry Reports
Actually those settings make the report more like the books a publisher will produce. The Odd pages are on the right when reading a bound book and publishers start major sections like the TOC, new Chapters, Indexes, Source listings etc on an Odd page so they will start on a right side page as you read. If you wanted to send the report to a commercial printer you will want to reset those options. For normal printing on single sided pages they do waste paper. For one he died in WW II and is buried in a military cemetery in Holland but his parents also included him on their headstone in Quebec as a memorial. Both sites have FindaGrave memorial numbers. I suppose by FindaGrave rules only the Holland Cemetery is a legitimate memorial because it marks the location of his burial. The other case is an aunt of my wife. She was cremated and, because of family squabbles, part of her ashes were buried with her husband in East Springfield, MA, USA while a second packet was transported to Nova Scotia and buried with her parents. In this case both FindaGrave memorial numbers mark her resting places. Brian Kelly On 21-Sep.-20 1:02 a.m., Richard Van Wasshnova wrote: Roberta, My cousin, #4, has one in a military cemetery also. Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Legacy to a Flash Drive
Lena This has to be set in Windows on each machine using Windows so it probably outside the scoop of the LUG however since it is needed to assign the same drive letter to a Flash Drive you want to use on two different machines I am going to answer. In File Explorer Right click on MyComputer or "This PC" depending on which version of Windows you are using. A menu will open with the option to Manage. Select that option Windows Computer Management console will open Select Disk Management from the Storage section Part of the display will show all your installed drives including the Flash Drive Right Click on the Flash Drive entry and select Change Drive Letter and Path Use Change to change the drive letter. Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Legacy to a Flash Drive
Jennie, This thread was originally about installing and running Legacy from a Flash Drive presumably because the original poster wanted to have a version of Legacy which he could use on any machine. That is not possible because Legacy has to be installed on any computer where you try to use it. Some of the files Legacy installs are in the Windows System folders which would be missing on any computer which does not have Legacy installed. The need to have the Flash drive use the same drive letter on two machines applies any time the Legacy Data includes media files. If you have any media stored on the flash drive you do need to have the flash drive use the same letter on each computer where you intend to use it with Legacy. Legacy uses the full path, including the drive letter for all references to a media file. If your USB drive is drive E: on the computer which is used mainly for Legacy but is Drive F: on a second computer then Legacy will not find the media when you are using it because it will be looking for files on Drive E. instead of F: Brian Kelly Rockland, ON, Canada On 14-Sep.-20 7:06 p.m., Jennie Matheson wrote: Hi Lena, It does not need to use the same letter between computers - each install of Legacy will look for the drive letter that you specify on that particular computer e.g my laptop might use Drive E but my desktop might use Drive F. You just have to make sure that if you have multiple USB ports on the computer that you use the same port each time, Jennie On Tue, Sep 15, 2020 at 6:52 AM Lena <mailto:l...@birch.net>> wrote: so how do you keep the same drive letter to put it on a new computer.. Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Legacy to a Flash Drive
You cannot install Legacy on any portable drive then take the drive to another computer. Legacy installs a number of files in the computer Windows System folder so it will only run if it has been installed on that machine. You may however keep your family data and media files on a flash drive if you wish. I keep my master files and associated media on a Flash drive but I also keep regular backups on my computer hard drive in case that flash drive becomes unusable (they do have a limited life especially when used frequently for Input and Output something which Legacy does because it is continually saving data and reading data to fill out the screens you use). I also make a backup copy of my working Flash Drive frequently. If you plan to use that flash drive on another computer you will need to make sure it uses the same drive letter on both machines. Legacy uses a full path when referencing media so the media references include the drive letter where they are stored. changing the drive letter of the flash drive will cause Legacy to lose track of the media. Re: [LegacyUG] New to L9, multimedia backup
Thew cloud backup only includes your family file. Multi-media is not included. That is why the cloud backup should be considered as an emergency backup and be supported by other backups on and off your computer. To store media backups in the cloud you will need another cloud storage option like OneDrive, Dropbox or other storage services. Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to open Legacy
Valerie, By Default your family file is in the folder Documents/Legacy Family Tree/Data You can change that using: Options > Customize > 6. Locations 6.1 sets the folder for your family files 6.2 sets the location of media and 6.3 sets the folder where Legacy will store temporary data. Notes the 6.1 and 6.3 are global settings and will apply to every file you create. 6.2 can be set to a different location for each family file. This lets those who work with many files (professional genealogists for example) set up a media folder for each client or project. If you want to tidy up your media set the default location for your media in section 6.2 then you can use the Tools > Gather Media to gather all your media into that folder. This will make copies of your media files so the originals will not be disturbed. Look for any files with the .ldb extension. This is a file used by MS Access to say a file is locked. sometimes if Legacy is not closed properly (like a computer shutdown) these .ldb files may be left behind. Normally they are deleted when the Family file is closed and Legacy shuts down normally. Delete all those .ldb files then try to restart Legacy.
