So yesterday afternoon I got underneath my 1995 540ia (with the 3.15
replaced rear diff from an 89 750i), and the diff is all wet, appears
to be seeping from seals on both sides. I've left two messages with
the shop that put it in (with no call-back yet), asking them just
what synthetic fluid they put in -- it's clear, seems very light,
smells slightly of clutch material. Is it possible that this 15 year
old LSD should have regular old dino-based juice, and that the
synthetic has softened seals and worked its way through? The diff was
dry when I got it.

I'm going to double check with someone who can give me good advice
(maybe call Brett Lyle) and maybe get a couples quarts of the 1988
750-specified hypoid SAE 90/GL-5 LSD rear gear oil, or best
equivalent, drain what's in there and put it in. That may also
eliminate the moan in slow tight turns without having to add a bottle
of GM anti-noise fluid.

Feedback? Suggestions?

I'm always amazed that people will try this, risking turning their DME into
a $1300 paperweight, rather than spend $49 (or less?) on the Peake Research
reset tool.

Not directed at you, personally, Jay. I guess that's just one of the (many)

I guess we are all different. I don't get spending $50 for something that
does what a wire does. If you are paranoid about touching the wrong wire,
add a resistor to your wire.

I've never heard of the 850 BMW, that's 100,00 dollars, ever heard of such?
Someone told me this man had one. I thought there is nothing like that. If
so, do let me know. Thanks in advance.

850 was priced from about $70K up. 850CSi was $112K or so when new.

Today, even the best example is worth far less than $50K.

Celisa,

Just do a web search, you will find more than you wanted to know about
the 850.

Sum it up, they are old, early 90's etc and can be had for as little as
$8k up to mid $40s for a pristine, rare 850CSi which was basically a M8
but not badged as such.

Subject: E36 Front seatback no longer flips forward
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

On my E36 Cab, the lever on the upper portion of the seat back, which, when
lifted, will ordinarily cause the seatback to flip forward, feels as if it's
no longer connected to anything, and lifting it produces no result.
Lifting the lever on one side causes the lever on the other side to life,
but there's no longer
any resistance.

My Bentley manual is useless on this point.

I recall Brett had addressed this a while back, but I'll be damned if I can
find it in the archives.

So, before I (try to) take it apart:

1. How is the solid back panel of the seatback removed? As I recall, it
snaps off, but it appears the 'tip' levers (which protrude from it) would
have to be removed first ( but I can't see any way to do that);
2. Any idea what might have broken? Is there a part I should buy before
having a go at it?

Thanks.

The levers just pull off. Pull hard, don't smack yourself :-)

To get the back off, you need to remove the two Torx screws at the bottom
(T15 or T20, I forget which size). Then the seat back just lifts off.

I seem to recall there being a bowden cable that sometimes will
break/separate from the lever. I'm sure there's others on the list that
have experience doing this repair; I don't (see below :-)).

Hope that helps,

Gruppe,

While replacing hoses that had become brittle, I discovered that the
small hose from the throttle body to the
evaporative purge valve vacuum switch had a splice in it. Is the
splicing part required for any reason or can I
just use a single continous length of vacuum hose?

Thanks,
Avi.

A splice?

Or a check valve?
