Henry:

you don't mention what year your car is, which is indeed relevant. The
knock sensor didn't appear on the M50 (at least for the US market, and I
suspect that also applies to Canada) until the '93 model year, with the
introduction of the M50tu, which added VaNoS along with the knock
sensor. If 325 is earlier than 93, no knock sensor.

Group,

I'm told that BMW was exchanging stock rims from e39 M5's that were chipping
and/or had evidence of what looked like a black-paint overspray. My M5 is
out of warranty...Not by much...But I am the second owner and the 1st owner
never did anything about it.

Does anyone have any information on this campaign/recall/swap out that would
be helpful in my negotiating with my dealer to get the rims swapped?

Any information would be helpful.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew:

1) How much a turn of the tie-rod increases the toe-in on the front of an
E36 ('98 M3)
2) By how much will the addition of another degree of negative camber (in
the front end) affect the toe

I plan to shim the lower mounts on my front struts ('98 E36 M3) to increase
the camber from -1.1 to -2.1 degrees this weekend. I bought a SmartCamber
gauge and also a toe-guage. After adding the additional degree, I plan to
re-adjust the tie-rods equally to get about 1/16" total toe-in (which is
what I presently have).

Thanks!

Don't know the answer to your questions specifically, but if you swap the strut hats
left to right (free) and get camber correction crash bolts from the dealer ($5) you
can get your neg camber that way. I was able to get up to about 4 degrees negative
with this simple low cost approach.

Regarding crash bolts... The ones I'm familier with are a bolt with a
slightly smaller diameter, so that the strut/spindle interface can be
moved around a bit before tightening. They've all been for cars that had
two through bolts in the direction of the length of the car, one at the
top and one at the bottom, holding the strut to the spindle.

On the '93 325is, the bottom of the strut is bolted to the spindle with
two bolts aimed toward the outside of the car. What I'd been planning to
do for camber until I got CC plates was to just put a spacers between the
strut and the spindle.

I can't remember how the top of the spindle is held to the strut. Is that
a "regular" lengthwise through hole that a crash bolt can work in?

Thanks!

Mark

I wonder has anyone been to Moritz BMW lately for an oil change. I have had
one of the most expensive oil changes you could ever imagine. Right now, the
techs are being paid $100.00 an hour. Now I haven't joined BMWCCA, but I
will soon. I did belong to it, but let it expire, I still have the sticker
on my car, and I sure used it when told I had to pay a total of $174.00 for
oil change and windshield wipers. I said do you guys give discounts to
BMWCCA, the guy said yes, 10%, and that bought it down to $154.00. I was
then told, I would soon need brakes, and would I like for them to do it
then. I said no, I'll wait on the light to come on to alert me. I called
Autoscope, I think is the name, and I'm going there, so I don't have to pay
$400.00 dollars for front brakes and pads. If I sound cheap, and if someone
wants to call me that, than I am, but I'm tired of being a sucker for the
ones that like to drain you.

I PAID for extra oil changes on my 330i, I could not stand the thought of
leaving the oil and filter in there until the service monitor said it was
time for a free change. I think the local BMW dealer charged me around $75
for the service, and I got a free loaner car and a complementary car wash
and vacuum. I will likely do the same on the M5, but it will cost even
more. They don't reset the service monitor, so I still get my free service
when it is time.

I think once the free maintenance has run out on my current car, I will
likely take it elsewhere for this kind of thing - and only back to the
dealer for warranty items.

Both of my bosses own BMWs and continued to take them to the dealer for
everything once the warranty ran out on their cars. MAN, they were
spending thousands for stuff. I tried to tell them to go to an independent
shop I and I would come pick them up.

The BMW service department seems first rate at my local dealer and they
"treat me like a king" and give me a nice 3 series loaner car. I guess
they can afford to be so nice since they charge so much for out of
warranty service.

P.S. Am I the only one that likes the smell of that BMW windshield wiper
fluid :-) ?

Not picking on Dennis, but I have yet to understand this so called
'ignorance' of all the data that proves synthetics last much longer than
even the BMW service monitor states for oil changes. I just don't get
it. Has anyone out there EVER had a proven oil failure or damage to a
motor from going 10-15k miles on a oil change? I have done extensive
oil testing on heavy equipment and my own cars. 15k on a synthetic is
nothing with proper filtering. People who change oil at 3000 miles
should bear the burden of the extra costs of dealing with that much
contaminated oil. Do yourself and your neighbors of this world a favor,
test the oil in your car and change it when it needs changing, not 10k
miles before hand.

That's insane!
I thought I was cheap too, but making the oil change a DIY for $45 is worth it.
Invest in a set of Rhino Ramps, 17mm socket and a large adjustable crescent wrench. I
get Mobil 1 for cheap at Walmart --buy it in bulk. Now I don't have to deal with the
Dealer, or the inherent skirt factor that goes along with it!

Good Luck!

Celisa,

I would say that place is a bonafide rip-off shop. You can tell them I said
so. $100 for an oil change. That's preposterous. I felt creepy inside
when a buddy was charged $50 locally for an oil change. Now, I can see $50
being reasonable. Techs have to be paid, there's about $5 in parts & $15
worth of oil. But even so, I'd think a local shop who wants your business
would be pretty reasonable. I do them myself, but know where I could get it
done for around $30 here at a local indy--not only that, it's the indy shop
I respect the most. The wipers are only $20 on top of that. The wipers are
something you can do yourself, as there are no tools required. You will
save yourself a lot of trouble by learning little things like replacing
wipers & light bulbs.

About the brakes, I bet they're suckering you. I recently got the same
thing about by 01 Saab. Guy called me up & told me the brakes were less
than 5%, which I knew was crap as I had just rotated the tires. These guys
should know better as I'm kinda a wrench-head. Anyway, he quoted me $490
for front brakes. I told him I'd do them myself & he gave me the whole
sleazy, "well, I don't know if I can let the car leave the shop like this
because of safety." I told him I was coming right over to have a look & all
of a sudden, he backed down. When I picked up the car, the other writer
gave me the same crap. I marched out onto the shop floor where the car was
sitting & indicated that the pads were a finger thick (about 1/2). If they
were really at 5% that would mean that the wheels would have to be about 3
feet wide to accomodate them......

If they're hitting you for $400, they're either marking the parts price
WAAAAAY up or charging you for 2.5 hours of labor. A local brake store is
offering $99 religns here. I wouldn't go there, but that gives you an idea
of the disparity in price. I bet your brakes have a suitable amount left in
them. BTW, replacing brake pads & rotors is really a pretty simple task, so
don't let them fool you into thinking they're doing major work.

Find a good local shop through local club members. When you have your oil
changed, ask them if there's anything else (be unspecific) that needs to be
done. A good local shop will keep the removed parts to show you if you want
& even explain what it does & how it fails, & so on. I bet money if I paid
Brett or Kirk to do work on a car & then asked to see what came out, they
would happily show me & explain to me what happened. I have a buddy who
recently paid a buttload to get a flex disk replaced on a 45k Z3 1.8, auto
(i.e. this part shouldn't have failed). When he called me I told him to get
the part as the car wasn't really showing any symptoms of failure & it's
almost new. Of course, he got the whole.....oh the trashman just came
thing. That was among the $1900 worth of work he had done on a pretty new
car, which is out of warranty time-wise. I recommended another place.....

I was always taught growing up that your first instinct is usually correct.
I would say through reading your e-mail that your first instinct is that the
local dealer is ripping you off. I'll leave the deductive reasoning up to
you......

Subject: What are the chances of a bad "new" alternator
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Okay went a few days, only a few miles, with my auto-express reman. bosch
140 Amp alternator installed. There were a few minor squeals just after
start-up and take off, but fine otherwise. Volt meter readings were right
on 14, everything seemed kosher.

Here is the mystery - yesterday I put a brand new BMW drive belt on and now
the alternator sings like a stuck pig. The pulley turns but the noise is
terrible. I started it this morning again and no noise, but I'm very
afraid of driving it given the noise last night.

The noise was definitely coming from the alternator - unmistakable, though
I will check the tensioner pulley tonight.

HELP - any suggestions? I've already got auto-express shipping another
one, but could this be anything else I'm missing.
