Some time back one of the car buying sites (I just can't recall or find it
now) used to have a page showing various car types with tables showing
common failure or trouble items. The data was broken up by subsystems and
you could drill down and get the specific problem.
Anyone know which site this was in or if it's still supported?

I have a couple of questions about folding rear seats on the E36 sedan.
1. Are the armrest and folding seats mutually exclusive?
2. Does the armrest include a ski pass-through?
3. If a car does not have folding seats, can the seatback be easily removed
(like on an E30), revealing a big pass-through hole (not like an E30, IIRC)?
It would be for rare occasions. If sheetmetal would be in the way, what
consequences would arise if that sheetmetal suddenly became a big hole?

I have most definitely been alerted to a laser equiped LEO
by my V1 in several places in Los Angeles. Lit up my V1
like a christmas tree, and sure 'nuf saw a motorcycle officer
with a laser unit sitting behind a bush in one instance and
a regular cruiser parked on a side street in another instance.
But I've defintely noticed I get a lot more hits when behind
certain SUV-like vehicles when they hit their brakes lately.
Argh.

Mike,
I had the same thing happen to my oldest (of 4) V1. It was 8 years old.
Choice was $45 and they would fix it or _if it was in working condition_
they would upgrade it (upgrade means send you a brand new unit with all
accessory cords etc) for $239.
Since it powered up fine, just didn't beep at known radar sources I decided
to let them tell me if it wasn't acceptable for upgrade and sent it to them
with CC authorization. Couple weeks later my upgraded (brand new) V1 showed
up. Mike Valentine is great.

Once in San Francisco I was driving by a local police
station, and I was hit by a laser. There were a few
cops and a couple non-uniformed people standing in
front of the station taking speeds of cars driving by.
It looks like SF is doing a demo on a laser system...
Is this a sign of future use of laser in SF????

I didn't know about the Z3/M Coupe subframe problems, but I do know about
the rear subframe failures in the E36 and E46 cars. My E46 broke after
about 3 years on the driver's side. It was fixed under warranty and the
area was reinforced. Apparently it's a common problem, and so far no
correlation with track use or aftermarket suspensions. I wonder why it's
a common problem on two fairly different suspensions.

OK, I've got to consult the expert wrenchers now. Let me get this right first, left
turn squealers is the right hand wheel bearing, right? They both squeal right now
though the right more than on the right turners(which would be the left). I'm going to
have to replace both, I think.
Checking with the "dealers" their bearings come with the hub at $133 a side. Bavauto
sells a bearing kit for $109, bearing, nut and seals, no hub. How does the forum do
theirs? I figured a full hub would be an easier install since I'm assuming I wouldn't
have to mess with high temp grease (which I have done before), for basically $24 more.
This is the first time I'm going to attempt this on a BMW (I've done it in other
makes). Need advice from BTDT a what gotcha's to look out for; a respite from the
insurance debate.

I share the love you feel for "RADARtest" - what a bunch of bozos. When
you read their "Review" of the V1 they can't even get the dimensions and
weight correct (and they never do re-test with the latest V1 which is
smaller) - plus they say they had trouble hearing the V1. In a convertible
with the top and windows down, stereo blaring, doing 80+ I can hear the
V1 go off - and I don't hear too goo any more :-)
Anyway, I recently picked up an Escort 8500 for "cheap" to use on the
motorcycles. I have 2 V1s already and I didn't want to spend another
$400 + expensive audio box for a V1 - and I got a really nice deal.
Anyway, the 8500 works well and has a nice range - pretty much on par
with the V1 (using a K band RADAR sign). It does false a little less
(when used in auto mode VS the V1s in little l mode), but more than I
thought given the reviews. The "remote display" included is not - it is
just a light and a mute button - it does not disable or replace the
RADAR detector's display (like a V1 with remote display). The 8500 display
in "expert mode" will show multiple targets and the relative strengths but
it is very hard to read. I never have had the 8500 false on laser as I
have the V1s. The local Arby's got some new lights and sometimes when
I turn next to them that too will set off the laser detector. With no
rear RADAR antenna the 8500 does not "see" as well behind you either.
The bottom line is that without the arrows and the bogey counter and
no true remote display the 8500 is not nearly as usable (to me) as the
V1s are. For what I paid ($239 delivered) it DOES work well in that
it has great range, falses a little less, and has a built in audio jack.

Chris, Scott, Group,
I have checked the Tire Rack website and while very cool is still just a
cartoon. Real pictures at different angles IMHO is the only way to
really check out the look of different wheels (other than checking it
out in person), especially since this car will probably not keep a stock
suspension for much longer.

far more than rigid enough to break loose bleeder valves :-P
the good thing about a bleeder is that you can completely
mangle it getting it loose/off & just replace it with a new
one. replacing hard lines is a lot more complicated if they're
long and/or complicated in shape.

yep. of course as soon as you start bleeding your own
brakes you end up putting stainless lines on & then you
have to deal with the hard line connection on the car side,
thus the mind shifts to flare wrenches & the (un)fun of
working with substandard ones or without when you try
to break the flex line loose & mangle the hard line on the car
side...
Ben
new hard lines on the rear end of the E30, by choice

Yes, the OP was talking about bleeding and yes, my reply was
actually geared toward having the proper tools when making the
leap to the next step of putting in new (stainless) lines. I
should have made that point a tab clearer.

Yes, this happened to me, too, on the I-15 South, near Baker, CA. I was
wondering about it, and was going to write to Valentine to ask about it.
It did find other police though, and about 10 miles back, it had
registered another speed sign (in the ominously-named "Photo Enforcement
Test Zone"), which was using K-band.

Ever had any wiper motor repairs done on this car?
What you are describing is the detaching of an actuator lever from the
recirc flap on the blower box under the hood at the base of the windshield.
You must detach these two levers from the flaps in order to remove the
top of the heater blower assembly. This is generally done to replace the
blower resistors or to remove the wiper motor assembly.
They can simply be reattached, so long as nothing is broken.
If you ever come up to Baltimore . . .
