---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 20 May 2004 18:40:09 +0000 From: "Gregory Bradbury" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Relay needed Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I've added Bosch PDC (Park Distance Control) to a friend's Chrysler and now I'm going to do the same on my E30 touring. The system is essentially the same as the factory one for E36, E39, E46, etc. except for one thing. The aftermarket system is energized when you put the car in reserve, but if you do the forward, backwards, forwards thing -- you won't have instant beep-beep until the system restarts and energizes itself (that's what we've seen so far). The idea is to find a Hella or Bosch relay that, once it gets a 'start' signal (power signal from the reverse light wire), that it would close the relay to allow power (from a constant on source) to flow to the device (PDC) for a specific time (30-60 seconds would do). It's a bit like a diesel car's pre-ignition timer relay (except these also take a sensor temp feedback input so as not to melt glow plugs). Could anyone recommend a number or two? In exchange I'll shortly do a write-up on the GREAT Bosch retrofit PDC kits, with specific kits for E36, E46 & E39 cars -- as well as my ventures to make this work seemlessly on my E30. The dealer sent me a post card with the words FACTORY UPDATE in huge letters . My WAG is since this concerns the integrity of the front suspension that it's as close as BMW wants to get to the dreaded "recall". The casting they used seems quite substantial. If the spring perch were to go away there would be nothing supporting the front end except the shock with the spring floating around it. The software reads codes and other information (rpm, load, etc.) without a problem, and I was able to reset without issue. One thing it does not have is anything to translate the BMW specific codes into english. Basic and cheap. I just got a tool from Autoenginuity ( http://autoenginuity.com/ ) I got the version that supports both palm pilot (I had a spare) and PC, does all the protocols including the new CAN (needed for '04 and up bmw). It has worked great - I've used it on my '99 Z3, an '01 Ford/Mazda pickup, a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer all with no problems. The guys at the company were very helpful and quick to answer questions, they shipped the item very quickly, and it does everything they say it will. They usually have auctions on ebay so you can save a few bucks that way.. the items come without all the typical packaging and that's the only difference. Theirs also comes with 'dyno' software.. plug in how much the car weighs and do some acceleration tests - it will plot out hp/torque curves using the time/speed of the car (from obd2) and the info you enter (atmospheric conditions, weight, cd).. cool toy. It was developed and built by an electrical engineer that is a gearhead like us, and it seems like a pretty good product. Apparently it was recently reviewed by one of the guys on the DIY channel, and got pretty good reviews. I haven't heard anything bad about it, and it seems like a really good quality tool. It is a bit expensive, and there are add-ons that cost even more for specific vehicles (GM is one of them :(, but all in all it seems to be a pretty comprehensive and well-designed package. The main problem is when you engage the system it doesn't stay at a certain speed it starts speeding up to who knows what speed. Kinda scary but at least it's trying to work now. Here is the problem in a nutshell. Push the lever and hold on for dear life. Yep thats it in a nutshell. What part should I replace next? Eeenie meanie... All you need is something with which to drive the inner race onto the spindle without touching the outer race. A socket or piece of pipe of the correct diameter will do. Once it is on far enough to expose some threads on the spindle, you can put on the washer and nut and use a wrench to finish installing the bearing. When I did my RF wheel bearing a couple of years ago, I was really worried about not having the right tools. But the old bearing came off with very little effort, and the new one practically put itself on. Then again, I have a California car which has not been exposed to snow, salt, or other nasty stuff that can make these jobs more difficult. They were available with limited slip. Look for an "S" tag or marking to indicate limited slip. You'll have to use the output flanges and possibly the cover from your old diff, but otherwise it uses the same case and will fit. I could not find any 3.46 diffs that I know will fit your E30. There are some 3.45s out there that fit. That ratio was either standard or optional in: E30 Euro 323i E28 U.S. 635CSi / L6 That ratio was also used in various E12 5 series, E23 7 series and earlier E24 6 series cars, but I don't know whether or not they used the same diff case as the E30. Of course, if you wanted to get really wild and crazy, there is always the 3.73 ratio from the E30 325i/is.
