Scott,

When I asked Steve D. at Ultimate Garage he said that even though he wasn't
aware of them (hence not on his parts list) he could order them if need be.
Steve's s dealer I trust.

I just purchased a 2001 740 IL Sport 55,000 miles.
The front end feels loose side to side with very little movement of the
steering wheel (like a bowling ball rolling in the gutter). I have had it
back to the dealer and they replaced a bushing in the steering. This
eliminated about 85% of the loose feeling. I have taken it back
twice since then for the loose feeling and a clunk in the right front, that
happens on occasion when slowly turning right in to a drive way with two or
more people in the car.
They tell me everything is up to spec. I have noticed that the loose
feeling decreases when
I activate the sport setting for the shocks.
Checked the shocks everything seems to be in order.
I do notice when I am applying the brakes and run over a rough spot in the
pavement or manhole cover the steering wheel shakes and if it is a pot hole
the movement
in the steering wheel is quite sharp and wants to come out of my hands. I
had a 98 with 110,000 and it didn't do this.
Does anyone have experience in eliminating this
problem? Your comments and recommendations would be welcome.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
Did these problems first appear after you bought the car?
The combination of knocks and front end looseness, mileage just out
of warranty, and the dealer's responses indicate you could have both a
car and a service nightmare the someone else dumped rather than dealing
with anymore. Was the car was in a crash?
Depending where you live, you may have the right to refund for
undisclosed problems within a given number of days after purchase, along
with other rights to full disclosure about the car's history. Also AAA
has diagnostic centers to diagnose a problem. If you post the
geographic area you live in, there's likely digest subscribers who can
direct you to reputable private shops, and maybe a lawyer or two that
will assist you in dealing with the dealer appropriately to reinforce
your resolve. Good odds that the dealer's "its in spec" determination
wasn't made using factory procedures. It might be worth getting out of
this unfolding nightmare as quickly as you can.
Good luck,
Barry

Barry,
Thanks for the advise.
I live in the southern part of New Jersey.
I purchased the car at De Simone BMW in Marlton NJ.
The car has the extended warranty to 100,000 miles.
I have a print out of the cars history when it was at the dealer for
service,
there is no indication of engine or suspenscion problems.
I appreciate the comments, hopefully some one will have had one of the
problems
and it was fixed. I just need to know how they fixed it.
Thanks,
Tom

I just purchased a 2001 740 IL Sport 55,000 miles.
I have a knocking sound coming from the car at idle. It is loud enough to be
heard over the radio.
The dealer said it is the varnous??? timing and that sound is normal. I
can't believe the car should sound like it has a rod knocking.
The dealer did change the oil and quote tested the system and the problem
went away for about 300 miles.
The knock has returned, however it doesn't do it all the time. Since it
doesn't do it all the time,
is there a way to adjust this varnous timing so it doesn't have the knocking
sound?
Is the dealer just trying to get out of fixing something under the CPO
warrenty.

When my 98 sounded like this they replaced the catalitic converters and the
noise went away.

Does anyone have experience in eliminating this problem that I can tell the
dealership?
Your comments and recommendations would be welcome.
Thanks,
Tom

I need to replace the backing plates for the parking brakes on my 325e.

I have the plates but it isn't obvious how to get them on since the hole is smaller
than the end of the axle.

I didn't see directions for that in the Bentley. Is there a site with that detail or
can someone give me directions on what has to be removed?

Hoping to do this Monday

TIA

My first question is "why?", but that is only because of what follows...

Yep...

It looks like (and from what I recall last time I was in there) that you are
going to have to remove the hub to install the backing plates. I know it
works like that on the front hubs. Look carefully at the assembly diagram on
the rear brakes in Bentley, and then go look at the procedure for replacing
the rear bearings. That might help.

It appears that it is fairly straight forward. Pull outter CV joint loose
from flange on hub, pull big nut off cener of hub, use puller to pull hub.
You might be able to do that without pulling the CV joint, but I don't know.

Do what you need and put it all back together.

Looks like a royal PITA. So why do you need to replace the backing plates?
Did the place for the shoe retaining pins pull through or is this something
else? I think they make special washers to "fix" this problem. If that will
work. I would do that and swap out the backing plates when the rear bearings
need work or if the other "fix" didn't work.

>Hoping to do this Monday

Good luck.

if you pull the hubs you will have to replace the wheel
bearings. this is a major pain if you don't have the
factory tool or one very similar. it's actually not
that trivial if you _do_ have the factory tool, but
it's not too difficult if you go slowly & have someone
who knows how the tool works help you with it.

if the wheel bearings are good and there's no easy
way to eliminate the problem with the parking brake
without new plates I'd do without the parking brake
until the bearings need to be replaced. or replace the
wheel bearings now and do new plates. I'm also
curious as to what makes the plates need to be
replaced.

Ben
no parking brake or backing plates on track car...

Scott-
I got mine at Eurasian (eap4parts.com). I didn't really price-compare but
theirs are generally pretty good.

Comment on the pads themselves: You have to be patient. I was pretty
disappointed in them for a while; finally after first autocross use they got
a lot more effective.

What do I need to remove, and how do I remove it? Bentley book makes no
mention of the Touring in the suspension section.

Planning to do the work Monday. I didn't think to get new bump stops.
Installing Bilstein HDs so I don't need them up front. What are the chances
that the rear ones can be reused? Maybe I need to save the rear end for
another day when I can have bump stops handy.
