Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear :)

A water pump, while a PITA is doable for me. A head gasket on the other hand
would go as well as SMiller's trailing arm repairs. (or my 318i engine rebuild)

I thought I had heard that water from the exhaust was normal, but I seem to
love to correlate casaulity like a madman.

I was reading up on the water pump R&R and think I have it down. Basically I
want to use a sealer (what type?) and make sure the surfaces are clean to make
sure it doesn't leak, and the rest is per the Bentleys. Any other heads up on
this? The timing belt is about a year old, as is the distributor.

Thanks,
Jim Laing
feeling much better now...

it is normal for water to come out of the exhaust when first starting a
car.. all kinds of stuff (including water) condenses out from the hot
exhaust gases in the cold muffler and can then drip out

once the muffler heats up, the moist hot air goes right through and
dissipates in the air, but until then, drip drip drip

(some of the stuff which condenses is pretty acidic and helps to rust out
mufflers from the inside out on short-driven cars that never get a chance to
heat up.. better mufflers help blow that moisture straight through, less
well designed mufflers let it pool inside)

from what I've seen, coolant leaks into the motor = white smoke out the
exhaust

failing water pumps can drizzle coolant out (external leak) and then when
they die completely you will find the temperature gauge rapidly rising

If you relieve tension on the timing belt, you MUST replace it.

You can remove the water pump without removing tension on the belt, it's
just a little awkward putting the new one in, as the belt tensioner spring
is mounted to the pump, and you have to compress it while placing the pump,
all the time, trying not to damage the pump gasket.

Brett,

Thanks, but the oil pressure switch is on the passenger side of the
engine on the bottom. The level sensor is on the driver side but on the
top of the oil pan.

The oil is starting high on the downtube from the intake manifold. I
can't see exactly where with the manifold in place but it is running
down the tube and then onto the 2 electrical connectors underneath.

It's a pretty heavy stream. Guess I'll pull the manifold when I get
home from DC on Wednesday.

Thanks

Caey

Can't say I've ever seen one of those leak beyond a fine mist.

Check your oil pressure switch, make sure it's not leaking through the
wiring connector.

Gruppe,

Will trying to fix my hot start problem(s) I noticed that there was a
water
leak on the side of the front of the block, right where the water pump
is.
The
PO had told me he replaced the water pump, but I can't be certain. My
only
concern is that once I had the car running, I noticed water coming out
of the
exhaust when first started. I get a feeling of dread here. Is that
symptomatic of
a failing water pump? Or something much more nefarious?

is the pan on an eta different than a normal i ? I coulda
sworn that the level sensor is on the passenger side of the
motor on Carlos' car, which I'd expect to be typical of
other i motors.

the level sensor is wickedly expensive too, something absurd
like $150+ IIRC.

Ben
shuold probably sell the level sensor from the track car
since there's no check control currently, tho I could
put it back in...

The most common point for it to lea out and be seen when this happens
is under the manifold. One who has not seen this before could think the
tube is leaking when it is really the harness/sender scenario. :-p

Yeah & my oil pan leaks oil thanks to you bums. ;-)

The oil pressure switch on my E30 325i was causing a *huge* oil leak.
Now I have an adapter in there as I installed an aftermarket gauge (oil
press).

BTW what do I need to get to install oil press/oil temp into an E36
325is? Way back when I remember JTD made some sort of distribution
block but I heard some negative comments about it, anyone else making
something better these days?

Carlos
'88 325is needs a clutch
'93 325is needs some gauges
x91 M3 also in the driveway right now, needs a softer suspension

BMP sells a distribution block. I haven't had any problems. I put pressure
there and temp in place of the drain plug. Probably not the best solution
but it works.

I didn't ask you where the oil pressure sender was, I asked you if it was
leaking.

I can't see the car, so I'm guessing.

I'm basing my guess on 15 years of experience.

Check the oil pressure sender for a leak.

Hi all,
I have now joined the ranks of the deer hunters, I basically ran over
one with my 97 M3/4 late Saturday night. Damage is suprisingly minor,
these cars are very sturdy. I am hoping someone can email me a diagram
for the various pans and air deflectors behind the bumper cover. All of
mine are gone as are the foglights and lower grill. I am debating about
fililng an insurance claim as it is a $ 500 deductible and I'm wondering
if I can just buy the pieces and put it together myself for less a than
that. Anyone have an ETK or similar that they can share an image or two

Deer strikes are generally considered part of comprehensive and not
collision coverage. Comprehensive usually has a much lower deductible.

This may vary by state/company tho so check your policy or anonymously ask
your agent =8^P
