why does she need to have ownership of it ? here in Michigan
I had a car which I owned (bank owned, I was paying them for)
which my fiance (at the time) paid for the insurance because
she was driving it.

they apparently started doing fair market value things here for
title transfers recently as well.

In Ohio they check the selling prices. Selling a car
way below its value in order to save sales tax is
seriously frownded upon. Fiancee has no legal
meaning.

Yes, I have run into this in Ohio once but they didn't make an adjustment as
I was able to provide a signed sales agreement and other information on the
value but they are looking out for it.

When was this? 1990?

PS to Rob's post...My father-in-law has one of those old Tempos, blue. It
has something like 15,000 miles (he bought it will 5,000 miles two years
ago). It looks and runs like new...which isn't saying a whole lot.

Heh,hehe, heh In 1987 I bought a beat up K wagon to use to drive to
Midway Airport in Chicago and leave in their parking lot all week as I
commuted between Morris Illinois and Wilmington Delaware for 8 months or
so. IIRC I paid $500 for it.

I was almost done with the assignment when it burned a valve. I kept
driving it, cause it ran and a couple of months later it was time to get
rid of it as I was relocation to Delaware. The company I worked for
would pay for shipping up to 3 cars to your new location or give you
half the shipping cost if you got rid of the car and they didn't have to
ship it.

I gave the car to a local charity for a $500 tax deduction and the
company gave me ~$400 for getting rid of it. The only car I ever owned
that I made out on when I got rid of it.

This isn't speculation :-)

To transfer to a non-family member, she would have to pay state tax at
5% on the value of the car. Your lender would have to approve the
transfer because they have an interest in the car, which generally means
you would have to pay it off or she would have to assume the loan.

In Maryland, you can sell the car to her for $100 but she would still
have to pay tax on the fair market value.

If you care for her enough to let her have your BMW, maybe a trip to the
marriage license desk at the courthouse is in order. Otherwise, this
stuff is all the province of the MVA, a separate state agency.

Asking anyone's advice. I'm wondering if there is a place in Dallas TX that
I can have my rims dipped in chrome so they may shine. Also, does anyone
suggest this? If so, does the chrome last, or will it in time be chipped
off. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. However do you just
think that the rims should remain or look better as being just the regular
alloy wheels. Thanks so much in advance.

Celisa - I had chrome bottlecap rims on my previous E36. They did
chip off over time, especially around the hub. And, they had problems
holding air - the tires would often go flat mysteriously and
unexpectedly 8^). Now, this may all be a function of how well the
chroming was done originally, but I don't think I'd do it again
in any case.

Chrome plating is not trivial, plus it weakens the
wheel. The cost for proper plating is about the same
as the wheels themselves. Some people like the look,
to others it is pure bling.

I would suggest considering a nice powder coated color, forget the chrome,
it weakens the bond (hence air loss) and will chip off with time.

The municipality that owned the K cars probably forgot about them and let
them sit for 20 years. A while back San Francisco hired a firm to look for
waste in the city and in addition to little things like the fact that the
people who collect admission fees at city pools are paid double the amount
that they actually collect and that when a bus driver is sick his bus sits
running in the yard all day the firm found some new vehicles that were
sitting in storage for years that the city forgot about...

P.S. I think the new 6 is better looking than the K Car, but I can't think
of a BMW that looks worse. I'm worried about BMW since they keep making
uglier and uglier cars at the same time Mercedes and others are making
better looking sporty sedans...

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

While shuttleing cars around for a friends wedding on Friday, a friend of
mine noticed that my car tended to blow a bit of black smoke under heavy
acceleration. As he described it, it wasn't much, but he could tell when I
shifted gears.

I have been noticing that it smells fairly rich in the mornings on the way
to work and I have the occasional warm start issue, but nothing that
pressing the accelerator while cranking doesn't cure.

I know everyone runs around looking for vacuum leaks on these engines, but
what about the other extreme?

My first thought is the coolant temperature sensor, followed by worn
injectors (215,000 mi). Ideas?

Replace your fuel pressure regulator...
after checking the press, of course.
