I recommend 5-7.5K miles on synthetic. Lots of short trips, 5K, extended
driving like you're doing, 7.5K.

That's good to know.
My new regiment is oil every 9K or close to what the lights tell me and oil
filter every 4500 miles.

'Jack had his oil changed, //Mobil1 5w30, every 5 k miles since
new. this corresponds to the third or fourth green light indicator
coming on. When pulling the plug I pull it with the engine running and
hot, to get the glugs of heavy glop that otherwise settle right away
when the engine is shut off. When draining the oil, I jack up the rear
left side of the car to tilt the pan, and let the residual slimier
particles drip til it stops dripping, usually about a day. What comes
out is clearly used oil, but nothing scary looking. At 60k when I had
the head off (downshifted to third at about 100), the engine looked
pretty darn clean inside. The sound and feel of fresh oil in the engine
was only noticeable if I thought about it.
Based on past threads on oil change intervals, I gave him a longer
interval, went over 7500miles to see what it would look like. What came
out was clearly on the yuck side of things. The new oil sound and feel
was easier to discern, too. So back to a 5k limit for oil changes.
If we're gonna spend X tens of thousands of dollars on our
machines, run them 'til the steering wheel grips wear out, then replace
the steering wheel and not the rest of the car, is it worth saving less
than the cost of a set of tires over the life of the car just to not
have to change the oil as often? A set of tires costs a lot less than
the cost to R&R an E36 head. If you don't keep your bimmer as long,
then is there a prospective buyer who wouldn't consider it a plus if the
seller had changed the oil more frequently?

Don't you mean when the green lights go "out"?

A bit of overkill above.

Judging oil by what it visually looks is nearly meaningless. You might as well
taste it while you
are at it.

The only way oil can be judged is by technical analysis. Nearly all synthetics
have proven that
extended drain intervals are possible (7,500 miles is usually a cake walk,
10,000 not the least
bit unusual).

(searching through some old bookmarks...). Here is a decent link with some
interesting thoughts
on oil life:

Mark,

With a good full synthetic GroupIV oil such as Mobil1 you can easily go to
7,500 miles or once a year whichever occurs first.
Highway or longer drives help to achieve oil temps that drive off water and
prevent hydrolysis of the oil.

:-) 100+ miles per day means I hit 7500 miles about every two months.

A longer interval, assuming it isn't causing damage, would be much
preferred.

I'm running Syntec right now, but will be switching back to Mobil1 (Syntec
was a try and curing a very low rpm oil light flicker... Didn't work :-/)

Tom I think I can do better than that. I go by feel.

"Hmm haven't changed the oil in the E30 in a while, wonder how long
it's been? Feels like maybe 3 months, ok time to change the oil."

Carlos. :-)
'88 325is feels like it's due for an oil change
'93 325is will change the oil prior to storage

There was a link to an autocross video of
a mini and one of a... morgan...? as well,
a month or so ago. A conversation about
separate front brake circuits followed.

I was trying to describe them to a friend
and words failed me. Of course, I have lost
the links.

Can anyone direct me to those two videos?

Thanks!

Kevin asked:
<Why are you running 15W?>
The owners manual states that conventional 15W-50 is approved down to
0F, so I figure that Mobil 1 cover the same temperature range at the
very least. In addition, my M42 spends a lot of time morth of 4000 rpm.
OTOH, I do run Mobil 1 0W-40 in my wife's E39. I had run Rotella T
Synthetic 5W-40 previously but I liked the fact that the M1 was ACEA
A3/B3/B4-02, and BMW LL-01 rated.

After two accidents involving police cars of Berlin, Germany, at first the
drivers were blamed and appointed to a security training. But taking into
consideration the driver's nearly identical reports, which claimed that the
cars on-board drive dynamic control systems had failed, BMW took on and
inspected the case. The result was: Yes, after an emergency brake exceeding
a certain preset pressure on the pedal, all stability systems are disabled
and can only be re-enabled by switching off the ignition for five seconds...

Hello All,
I recall in the past some discussion on this list about "alternative" rental
agencies in Europe. I've searched the archive to no avail. My family will be
making a trip to Brittany this summer and I'd like to rent something
interesting, if the cost is not too exorbitant. Something cool that isn't
available here, esp. tourings, would be nice. Can anyone help?
TIA,
Scott Staewen
