A while back I mentioned a "clunk" I was getting from my right outer
CV joint, which wasn't there before I started my three month Rear
Wheel Bearing Replacement From Hell project. I had picked up a used
"good" half-shaft from Double 02 Salvage, and this weekend was clear,
so it seemed like a good time to make the swap.

Saturday I removed the axle nut retainer (it is a sacrificial part)
and the Big Axle Nut. But before pulling out the old half-shaft, I
decided to clean up the replacement. Taking my time, I got all the
grease out of the ABS teeth and got the splines and axle nut threads
all shiny. And as a last test (but it should have been my first
test), I tried putting the Big Axle Nut onto the threads at the end of
the shaft.

Ruh roh Raggy. The nut does not go on more than two threads deep.
WTF? (What the heck?) Upon closer examination, the threads do not
stay parallel all the way around the shaft. Rather, they're wavy on
one side. This leads me to believe that the half-shaft was subjected
to some serious tweaking that caused the threads to deform on one
side. Clearly, this half-shaft was not going in my car.

By late this morning (Sunday) I had located a replacement half-shaft.
Kyle Sanchez (hi Kyle) has been parting out an E30, and also
collecting various parts over the last couple of years. A quick trip
to his house and I had a useable part. And yes, I tested the Nut on
the threads before I bought it.

So presently I'm taking a break from laying on concrete, but the next
step is to torque everything down. Time to get out the bathroom scale
and breaker bar extension pipe again!

I replaced the brake light switch yesterday and as soon as I got done,
I tested the new switch but it still has the same "brake light failure"
message. What are the chances that the brand new switch I installed is
bad too or should I start looking somewhere else? All suggestions
welcome.

TIA

"Brake light circuit failure" means the switch, or wiring.

Is that what you have?

You may actually have a bad brake light, or at least one with marginal performance.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I put an M50 in my E30 over a year ago. While participating in a
track day in September, I noticed that the car had started to idle at
1500rpms, if I tapped the gas, it would hunt for a bit. It would
drop down to 750 rpm a several times then settle back in at 1500rpms.
Otherwise the car ran great.

On the way home, when stopping for gas, upon pushing in the clutch,
the car again hunted a bit. But this time it revved 3 or 4 times then
settled in at the normal 750 rpm idle.

Since then, every time I push in the clutch it does this short hunting
routine then settles in at 750.

The only time it ever hunted before this was when I unhooked the battery.

Any thoughts? I don't know if this could be related, this car may have
a failing fuel pressure regulator. It starts immediatly when cold, or
hot, but if it has cooled for anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours it
can take up to 10 seconds of cranking before it starts. (I suppose it
could also have a leaky injector) I need to get the fuel pressure
regulator checked ...

Thanks,

Kurt

Hi all,
The patient is 86 325 I jacked up the rear end of
the car, put the
car on the jack-stands, and started turning a wheel by
hand. I can
hear humming like noise coming from middle of the car
around the area
where cat. conv. is (now I am not 100% sure of this as
I originally
thought that noise is coming from the diff area). Can
it be possible
that this noise is coming from driveshaft's center
bearing? (At this
point I did not remove heatshields to investigate
further). Or can it
be slide coupling? Noise is more prominent right when
(again I think)
I change direction of the wheel spin. Also as a
troubleshooting note:
while driving around 'freeway speeds' if I shift to
neutral I can
hear high pitch hum (rpm affected), however when I
shift back in the
gear I can not hear it (maybe sound pitch changes or
it is muffled by
other noises).
Thanks a lot,
Igor

tho it sounds like you have a different issue, I get
a glug-glug noise in my STi when it's been sitting a
while. near as I can tell it's coolant sloshing around
somewhere underhood. goes away when the car is
warmed up. I just put it down to the car having
minimal sound insulation on the firewall & add it
to the list of little quirks that make it fun. however
if your problem just stared happening it sounds like
it's something else.

not much help....

Alex,

If I dredge up the rusty memory the engine run-in occurs at the engine
assembly plant not the final chassis assembly point.
