Same answer as Rich gave. The 740 was also a V8. With the 745 vs. M3
question I assume you meant the current models of both? Mike Hood-Douda's
answer related to the mid-eighties 745 which only came to the US as a gray
market car.

Just curious Celisa, who is telling you this stuff?

Celisa,

With the exception of the E23 745i (1984 or thereabouts),
which had the aforementioned 3.5L Inline-6 turbo, any BMW
74x (740 or 745) has a V8 motor. The E38 (last generation)
740i had a 4.4L V8, and the current 745i has a 4.5L V8 with
valvetronic.

There have been no V8 M3s--the E30 was a 4-cyl, the E36 and
E46 have 6-cyl. (I am ignoring the racing-only V8 M3 that
got kicked out of ALMS).

For easy reference to cars and their engines, check
www.koalamotorsport.com and look for "E-codes".

Short story, your friend is wrong and no M3 has shared an
engine with a 740i or 745i. The next M3 will most likely
be a V8, but it will be an entirely different motor based
on the current M5's V10.

The E23 745i appeared with two motors.

Primarily, an E23 745i used the M106 engine. This was a 3.5L big six, very
similar to the M30 engine, but with extra oil/coolant stuff, because it was
turbo charged. This was one of the very rare BMW factory turbo gasoline
engines. It had a KKK27 (iirc) turbo on it. People are making disgusting
amounts of power out of this engine now with very simple modifications. The
M30 in base form is also ideal for aftermarket turbocharging, as its got
good basic characteristics as an NA motor but an 8:1 compression ratio
meaning it can take lots of boost without much care. See
www.turbochargingdynamics.com for a couple of E28 owners that are doing
great things with the M30.

Now, the other E23 745i engine was the good ole M88(or was it S38?). The
M88/S38 was the 3.5L N/A motor used in the E28 M5 and E24 M6.

I believe the only 745i's using this motor were for the south african
market.

In any case, I suspect this is where the "745i with M3 motor" confusion
comes from. Some early BMW 745i's DID come with the M5 motor of the day,
but that was almost 20 years ago :) The original M3 motor was basically
2/3rds of the original M5 motor (that is, an S14 is more or less a 4
cylinder S38 :)

The 745i of today uses a valvetronic V8, while the M3 of today uses a
6-throttle inline 6. The motors have essentially nothing in common.

Somebody's pulling your leg or is uninformed.

There have been a couple of different 745i models. The long ago one had a
turbocharged "big six," which is unrelated in any way to the M3's 3.2 litre
six. This car was never officially imported to the US.

The current 745i uses a 4.4 litre V8 engine which is of course also
unrelated to the M3.

Let me ask this question. I know about the iPods, but however do you think
in the near future, which I'm sure it's possible and true that it will
replace the cd and mp3 players? Right now wouldn't you have to like plug up
a portable one if you would like to listen to it, or are any of the bimmers
at this point coming with them. I was wondering, because I have a Kenwood
mp3 in my bimmer and I can see the iPod coming next. Thanks in advance for a
response.

Hi All,

I finally found a buyer for my E36 M3. He lives in a state that requires a
front license plate (I do not); therefore, I need to install a front license
plate bracket.

Can anyone tell me what parts are required to install a front plate?

Anyone have the parts they want to sell or trade for a non-plate center bumper
strip?

Speedometer innacuracy:
I knew my E36 speedo was off by a bit, reading lower than actual
since the car was new. The average speed on the OBC also read low, 2mph
lower than the speedo.
The big shocker was after a drive down the 5 to LA, where I got to time
the 'secret' OBC codes with a stopwatch over 10 and 20 miles stretches
on cruise control.
114kph as displayed on the OBC internal code is actually 83mph. 128kph
displayed is 90mph actual, 140/141 kph is about 99 mph.
To further confuse the accuracy, the kph reading of the internal code
gives a lower speed than the 'avg speed' reading on the OBC if I reset
it while on cruise control and set the display to metric.
What this means is that the raw internal calibration that
feeds the speedo and OBC is way off too.
Further muddying the issue is that the odometer measures correctly.
Strange.
