I was wondering why a car sold in Switzerland would have a "Full Time"
badge in English...

The ETK allows entering 1985 as a build year for a Euro 325ix, so it's
possible they made some that early.

The ETK doesn't show these emblems. The left side badge looks vaguely
familiar to me, but not from BMW. Subaru maybe?

My impression has been that BMW doesn't go in for selling a bushel of
badges with a car to hold them together like some other manufacturers.
You have to know what you have or what you're getting based on knowing,
not reading the novel that is the side of a car. Stolen from a Subie,
those eBay bimmer badges are bunk.

Friend of mine bought a dropped and tinted VW GTi that some whiz kid had
slapped a Chevy Corsica "Eurosport" badge on. Huh? Get real, man.
Everyone knows the german-built GTis had "Amerisport" badges... right?

prefers de-badged to over-badged. so, who's the badger?

Stan replies: thanks!, duh -- why didn't I do that, and interesting --
probably should not put it on my 325iX with all the Subarus around, in that
order.

I've been told the rattling is indicative of a vanos unit out of
"alignment" rather than broken...
Anyone else hear the same?
I have a local independent R&R'ing the original units moving the toothed
"bucket" forward a notch and ficxing the noise.
This is all hearsay as mine makes the rattley noise, albeit very faint
and I havn't had the "kludge" done to mine yet. The local independent
also claims that many of the '95's came out of "synch" or "alignment"
and do not actually require the "kludge" but rather it is a customer
"feel good" fix as the noise is not indicative of something actually
being broken"
This is why I have an "extra" vanos unit is my garage. I was expecting
to have to replace mine when I heard the noise...

Well a complete cam R&R, which includes taking out the VANOS unit, is
5.5 hours at BMW dealer flat rate. So I'd guess 3 hours or less.

Plus of course the cost of the replacement VANOS itself. They do wear
out, making a characteristic noise usually described as rattling marbles
in a can.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I talked to Bentley Publishers - they will refund my
cash or give me a new SM after I send mine in. No
problem except for one thing - they have none in stock
and are back-ordered for an indeterminate amount of
time. That means my options are - keep a defective and
incomplete SM that is completely useless for what I
need it for right now OR go without one for several
weeks. In both cases, I'm not getting what I paid for
and neither helps me. They suggested posting my
problem on their forum and hoping that an editor sees
it and might help somehow, but I am a person of little
faith.

I need 5 pages - pages 130-17 through 130-21.

Could one of you please contact me directly, scan the
pages and email them to me?

Thanks,
Pete

I'm sure most of you remember my brake pedal woes forever. I magically
restored my brake pedal over hundreds of miles. Here's the story:

Replaced MC/ rebuilt calipers new pads.

However, when I put the new pads in, I neglected an important part, as it
didn't fit inside my wheels, the front rattle springs. What this does is
allow the caliper to twist a bunch in the brakcet. The clips' job is to
hold the caliper tight against the bracket to prevent this. Without the
clips, pressing the pedal causes the caliper to twist to where it is
supposed to sit and releasing allows it to swing back to it's resting (not
normal) position. Of course, the next time you mash the pedal, the pads
have been spread open by this twisting, & you have to make this up with
pedal travel. Eventually, the pads wear to accomodate this, & you get a
decent pedal (this actually happened over a pair of track events--yes, I did
2 track events where I had to quickly pump the pedal to get to the top of
the stroke).

So I decided to replace the clips & test this theory. What? The pedal
travels to the floor!!!!! Well see the thing above about the pads wearing
to accomodate the caliper play above? Yep, you have to re-wear the pads.
So I did that by driving the car around on factory wheels (which in my case
also means on Kumho racer rubber). & the pedal eventually got decent again,
but not great. Then after an autocross, I had the pedal sinking to the
floor again, WTF? So I look, & the clips have fallen out of the front
calipers. Hmmmm, I guess years of service wear them out a bit.

So, off to the dealer to get some new ones--$27 for front & back. Actually
manage to find a set of old ones too. Put them in first & check how much
play they allow in the caliper. I don't really have to pull much to see a
small amount of play. New clips--nothing even when pryed on with the BFS
(ibg effing screwdriver). Wow. SO drive it a bit & now the pedal is very
good, like you'd expect from what was once BMW's premier sports car.

Moron.....I'd still like less play in the pedal though, but it kills me to
spend on upgrades that actually don't stop the car any faster.

Anyone in the SF Bay Area know of a good upholstery shop in the area. Would
prefer one with BMW experience and one where you might have direct
experience (esp. multiple projects).
